Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) is a chronic relapsing disease in gastrointestinal tract. Conventional medications lack the efficacy to offer complete remission in IBD therapy,and usually associate with serious side effects. Recent studies indicated that nanoparticle-based nanotherapeutics may offer precise and safe alternative to conventional medications via enhanced targeting,sustained drug release,and decreased adverse effects. Here,we reviewed orally cell-specific nanotherapeutics developed in recent years. In addition,the various obstacles for oral drug delivery are also reviewed in this manuscript. Orally administrated cell-specific nanotherapeutics is expected to become a novel therapeutic approach for IBD treatment.

Laparoscopic Liver Resection: A Tool to Improve Outcomes in Obese Patients Requiring Liver Resection

Introduction: Obesity is associated with an increased risk of fatty liver disease, predisposing to liver fibrosis and cirrhosis, as well as increased occurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma. Obesity is intuitively considered a risk factor for increased post-hepatectomy morbidity and mortality. Nevertheless, peer-reviewed literature reveals significant heterogeneity between different cohorts contributing to varying conclusions. Outcomes in this cohort for Laparoscopic Liver Resection (LLR), especially in non-academic settings remain under-evaluated. The current study evaluated outcomes of LLR in obese patients, in a community health system. Methods: A retrospective analysis of all patients undergoing LLR at the flagship hospital in the community health system, between 2013 and 2020, was performed. Classified into two groups based on Body Mass Index (BMI): obese (BMI > 30 kg/m2) vs non-obese (BMI Results: 90 patients underwent LLR during the 7-year period;obese = 38 and non-obese = 52. No statistically significant differences were noted between obese and non-obese cohorts, in baseline characteristics including age (53.1 ± 15.1 vs 56.8 ± 11.6 years), female gender (60.5% vs 53.8%), and ASA grade (3.13 ± 0.53 vs 3.02 ± 0.54) (all p > 0.05). Univariate analysis showed no statistically significant differences between obese and non-obese groups, comparing estimated blood loss [300 (100 - 500) vs. 200 (100 - 462.5) cc], operative time [177 (125 - 215) vs. 150.9 (111 - 207) minutes], bile leak (2.6% vs. 4.1%), post-operative bleeding (2.6% vs. 4.1%), infection (0% vs. 4.1%), cardiorespiratory complication (10.5% vs 12.2%), conversion rate (5.3% vs 5.8%), length of stay [4 (3 - 5) vs. 4 (2 - 5) days], 90-day reoperation (0% vs. 2%) and 90-day readmission (2.6% vs. 4.1%) (p > 0.05). In this work, the most detrimental missense mutations of Madl protein that cause various types of cancer were identified computationally and the substrate binding efficiencies of those missense mutations were analyzed. Out of 13 missense mutations, I Mutant 2.0, SIFT and PolyPhen programs identified 3 variants that were less stable, deleterious and damaging respectively. Subsequently, modeling of these 3 variants was performed to understand the change in their conformations with respect to the native Madl by computing their root mean squared deviation （RMSD）. Furthermore, the native protein and the 3 mutants were docked with the binding partner Mad2 to explain the substrate binding efficiencies of those detrimental missense mutations. The docking studies identified that all the 3 mutants caused lower binding affinity for Mad2 than the native protein. Finally, normal mode analysis determined that the loss of binding affinity of these 3 mutants was caused by altered flexibility in the amino acids that bind to Mad2 compared with the native protein. Thus, the present study showed that majority of the substrate binding amino acids in those 3 mutants displayed loss of flexibility, which could be the theoretical explanation of decreased binding affinity between the mutant Madl and Mad2.

In this framework we present a new method for measurement of the UWB impulse train based on the parallel sampling of the cascaded identical RC filters. We show that the amplitudes and time locations of p sequential impulses can be reconstructed from simultaneous measurement of the outputs from 2p cascaded identical RC filters. The parallel sampling scheme has a wide range of applications including the detection of the ultra wideband (UWB) impulses. Due to identical analog RC filters and buffer amplifiers, the parallel sampling scheme is flexible to implement in VLSI applications.

This study reports on the adsorption efficiency of a natural iron oxide from Mballam-Cameroon in comparison with synthesized goethite to simulta-neously remove cobalt and nickel ions from aqueous solutions. Chemical analysis on the natural iron oxide sample revealed iron as the main element and hematite (58.52%) goethite (19.42%), kaolinite (12.69%) and quartz (7.79%) as the component phases in the iron oxide sample. The iron oxide was found to be microporous (BET surface area 43.27 m2/g) with fairly spherical polydisperse particles. Results show maximum absorption for Co(II) and Ni(II) ions for both adsorbents occurred at an equilibrium contact time of 80 mins, dose rate of 0.1 g/L, and pH = 7. Goethite was slightly more efficient at removing target metal ions with maximal adsorbed quantities at 117.8 mg/g of Co(II) and 100.6 mg/g of Ni(II), and 103.9 mg/g of Co(II) and 85.2 mg/g of Ni(II) ions for natural iron oxide. Equilibrium modelling presented the Freundlich isotherm as the best fit model for both adsorbents and metal ions, indicating heterogeneity of the surface binding sites during adsorption. The pseudo-second order kinetic model was the best-fit model, indicating chemical adsorption between the adsorbent surface and metal ions, hence a good correlation between equilibrium and kinetics. The findings indicate that the efficacy of the natural iron oxide from Mballam is almost equivalent to that of synthetic goethite, validating its applicability for the simultaneous removal of cobalt and nickel ions from aqueous solution.

This work describes a novel adaptive matrix/vector gradient (AMVG) algorithm for design of IIR filters and ARMA signal models. The AMVG algorithm can track to IIR filters and ARMA systems having poles also outside the unit circle. The time reversed filtering procedure was used to treat the unstable conditions. The SVD-based null space solution was used for the initialization of the AMVG algorithm. We demonstrate the feasibility of the method by designing a digital phase shifter, which adapts to complex frequency carriers in the presence of noise. We implement the half-sample delay filter and describe the envelope detector based on the Hilbert transform filter.

Petrography and Geochemical Characterization of Dolerites from Figuil (Northern Cameroon) and Léré(Southwestern Chad)

This work presents the petrographic and geochemical data of the dolerite dykes crosscutting the Pan-African basement of Figuil (North-Cameroon) and Léré (South-West Chad) in order to approach their petrogenesis and their emplacement context. Two groups of dolerites have been highlighted by petrographic and geochemical studies. These groups were discriminated by their TiO2, Fe2O3, REE, Ba, Nb, Zr, La and Hf contents which are relatively higher in group I;group II, on the other hand, has higher MgO, Mg#, Sc, Ni and Cr contents. The mineralogical assemblage of these dolerites is made up by plagioclases, pyroxenes, olivine, oxides, amphibole, biotite and sometimes pyrite, calcite, apatite, epidote and chlorite. The behaviour of the major and trace elements suggest that studied dolerites have an evolution dominated by fractional crystallization. Most dolerite samples show higher REE concentrations and (La/Yb)N > 8.7, (Tb/Yb)N > 1.9 and Dy/Yb > 2 ratios characterizing a garnet-bearing mantle. The difference in incompatible elements between the two groups is explained by the degree of partial melting of the same source which becomes more important over time. Low (Ce/Yb)N values (3.3 - 11.58) also suggest relatively low partial melting degree of the source. Fractional crystallization process was possibly combined with minor crustal contamination as shown by enrichment of Th/Yb from group II to Group I that might be due to turbulent magma emplacement. The chemical compositions of these dolerites are similar to that of continental tholeiites with slightly moderate negative Nb-Ta anomalies which are attributed to crustal contamination of magmas. As other dolerites of Cameroon, continental tholeiitic signature of the studied dolerites is evidenced in geotectonic discrimination diagrams with Group II dolerite compositions falling within the field of tholeiitic ba

Coastal zones are attractive areas for human habitation. Even though these areas are often associated with high disaster risk. This study is with objective to assess the legal and policy frameworks aimed at mitigating the disasters and risks associated with coast line degradation in Kribi. A desk review of the different policy documents related to coast line management and disaster risks mitigation were analyzed. Stakeholders involved in this coastline management were also consulted. The results of the study revealed that two types of actors are involved in coastline management namely: state actors and non-state actors. There are different legal instruments aimed at managing coastline in Cameroon that range from International to National laws with Cameroon ratifying some of these conventions such as: the Ramsar convention;the Convention on the Protection of Wetlands of International Importance;the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). In conclusion, Cameroon has a political will, legal and institutional framework for coastal zone management. However, initiatives designed to promote integrated coastal zone management are facing challenges in its implementation. The reasons are due to the complexity of the institutional and legal framework for the implementation of these initiatives. It is therefore necessary to develop an integrated management strategy that takes into account the role of each institution and that clearly defines an effective mechanism for intervention and coordination between actors.
