＜正＞ This study investigates whether endogenous male sex hormones affect the participation of thromboxane （TXA2） in the acetylcholine （Ach）-induced response in rat aorta. For this purpose, aorta from control and orchidectomized male Sprague Dawley rats were used to analyze: （1） vascular response to Ach;（2） vascular response to the TXA2 mimetic U-46619 and, （3） the basal and Ach stimulated production of TXB2, the stable TXA2 metabolite. The Ach-induced relaxation was unaltered by the TXA2 synthesis inhibitor, furegrelate, in arteries from control rats while was increased in aortas from orchidectomized rats. In intact vessels, the concentration dependent contraction induced by U-46619 was similar in arteries from both rat groups. The basal and Ach-stimulated TXB2 release was increased in arteries from orchidectomized animals. These results show that TXA2 production is increased in aortas from orchidectomized rats compared to their controls, and that this prostanoid is functionally involved in the vasodilator response to Ach only in arteries from orchidectomized rats.

Sulodexide and Alzheimer’s Disease: A Preliminary Prospective Study

The purpose of this prospective study is to determine the relative incidence of Alzheimer’s disease in patients treated for at least three years, with sulodexide (n = 46, 76.48 ± 7.02 years old) or acenocoumarol (n = 47, 78.21 ± 6.66 years old) in order to prevent primary and secondary venous thromboembolism and atherothrombotic disease. In the sulodexide group, there was an apparent prevention of cognitive and behavioural impairment (relative incidence: 2.02) compared with acenocoumarol group (relative incidence: 4.86). The favourable results in sulodexide group may be related to their pharmacodynamic actions of inhibition of PAI-1, which may interfere with the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease, and to the role of glutathione and PAI-1 in the β-amyloid system in the brain.

Verbal Communication in HIV-1 Patients： A New Perspective on the Study of Cognitive Disorders

The aims were：（1） to study verbal communication skills presenting with verbal communication deficits by applying the MEC in HIV-1 patients, and （2） to analyze the proportion of patients Protocol. The authors evaluated 20 patients over 18 years of age HIV-1 positive; native speakers of Spanish; without alterations in language acquisition, reading, writing or history of neurological or psychiatric disease; patients undergoing antiretroviral treatment （not efavirenz） with viral load 〉 50 copies/mL, and patients not undergoing treatment. Their verbal communication abilities were evaluated with Protocol MEC. The results demonstrate that some of the skills evaluated are more vulnerable in HIV-1 patients. The tasks that showed the most frequent and systematic deficits among patients were discourse-level tasks and those that evaluate lexical semantic processing. The authors compared patients＇ performances with the ＂cut-off＇. The scores were turned into score Z. A hierarchic cluster analysis was carried out to identify subgroups with different profiles according to the areas that were affected. The detection of communication deficit profiles in HIV-1 patients would be the starting point for the identification of disorders and the admission of the patients to health care system. This research constitutes an initial approach towards the identification of clinical profiles among HIV-1 patients.

The majority of women will experience some or most of the menopause symptoms in their life. Thais time in women’s life is associated with a reduction in estrogen levels which leads to physiological changes that affect different organ systems. In the urogenital tract, these changes usually cause vulvar and vaginal atrophy, affecting a vaginal health of women and decreasing their quality of life. Also, there is a reduction in vaginal moisture and loss of tissue elasticity. Besides, other organ systems are involved and they can also negatively impact normal vaginal physiology. These evolutional changes frequently lead to bothersome symptoms that can negatively impact a woman’s vaginal health and the quality of life. The role of pelvic floor physiotherapy is to improve the tone and strength of the muscle fibres in order to achieve the increase of motor units, improve muscle elasticity and to increase the muscle mass which will help to alleviate menopause symptoms.

Natural antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are small cationic molecules that display antimicrobial activity against a wide range of bacteria, fungi and viruses. AMPs are multifunctional molecules that have an essential activity in infection and inflammation: they play an important role in the innate immune response, not only as antimicrobial agents, but also as immunomodulating molecules and as an important link between the innate and adaptive immune response. In this article, we will discuss the antimicrobial activity, together with the novel properties of some of these molecules as immune modulators on the innate and adaptive immune response.

Model for the Vaccination against the Poliomyelitis

The poliomyelitis is an acute infection produced by the polio virus that affects the human central nervous system. It is transmitted by fecal-oral and respiratory *** are two types of vaccine, OPV （live attenuated virus） and IPV （inactivated polio virus）. Currently, there is a plan of vaccination until the age of 5 with OPV. The children vaccinated expel a virus （derived from the vaccine） to the environment, and some of the people that have oral contact with them, get vaccinated by the herd behavior. Nevertheless, taking into account the lately observed facts about the reversion to virulence of the oral polio vaccine during its circulation in the environment, a change in the current vaccination schedule is being contemplated, where the oral polio vaccine can be replaced by the inactivated vaccine. Nowadays, In Colombia the inactivated oral polio vaccine is recommended for children presenting immune deficiency who are vaccinated with IPV. These children do not expel poliovirus to the environment. This work presents a mathematical model that describes the dynamics of the infection in a population where the two types of vaccination are carried out. The population is divided into two groups of age and Michaelis-Menten interactions. Different strategies of vaccination are simulated and analyzed.

Primary Care Practitioners’ Views on the Use of Proton Pump Inhibitors Associated with Alginate-Antacids for Better Gastroesophageal reflux Disease Symptom Control: results of a National Survey in Spain

Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GErD) is a prevalent disease in Western countries. Despite effective treatment modalities, in some patients total symptom control is not achieved in clinical practice. A cross-sectional study was designed to assess primary care practitioners’ views on the effectiveness of proton pump inhibitors (PPI) as monotherapy in the control of the most common symptoms of GErD (heartburn and regurgitation), as well as to determine the level of implementation of the “combined therapy” (PPI + alginate-antacids). Methods: A questionnaire on different aspects of the management of GErD was completed by 1491 primary care physicians. The questionnaire was composed of 11 close-ended questions with one-choice answer, with a total of 52 items, covering the main data from patients presenting with GErD. results: Treatment with PPI alone was mostly considered insufficient for the control of GErD symptoms. The combined treatment of PPI + alginate-antacids was used for 37% and 21% of physicians for treating heart-burn and regurgitation, respectively. A better control of symptoms, an increase in the onset of action and to reduce nocturnal acid breakthrough were the most frequently argued reasons for the use of PPI + alginate-antacids. A high percentage of participants believed that treatment with PPI alone was insufficient for the control of symptoms and 39.8% of physicians reported the persistence of heartburn, 38.6% the persistence of regurgitation and 43.2% the persistence of epigastric discomfort in more than 25% of their patients treated with PPI as monotherapy. The most common schedule for the use of the antacid medication was on demand. Conclusions: Spanish primary care physicians consider that a high proportion of GErD patients continue to suffer from symptoms during PPI treatment alone.
