Role of Fungal Biomass in N-Hexane Biofiltration

The biofiltration of n-hexane is studied to optimize determinants factors of hydrophobic VOC filtration efficiency. Four trickle-bed air biofilters (TBABs) were employed;two of which were supplied with nutrients buffered at a neutral pH, while another two at an acidic pH of 4 to induce and enhance fungal growth. The loading rate of n-hexane was kept constant in all TBABs at 13 g/m3/h. At each pH levels studied, the biomass of the TBABs was pre-acclimated using different ratios of n-hexane and methanol. The fungal biomass responsible for the degradation of n-hexane was then examined and quantified. Dichloran Rose Bengal Chloramphenicol agar was used for fungi quantification, and optical microscopy for classification. Effluent biomass was validated by measuring volatile suspended solids. Fungal counts resulting from n-hexane biodegradation were related to nitrate and carbon consumption. It was found that n-hexane elimination capacity closely followed biomass growth, and reached a steady-state at an optimum biomass density of roughly 3000 cfu/ml. major shifts in fungal species were observed in all TBABs. Dominant fungal species grew slowly to become the most numerous, and were found to provide maximum elimination capacity, although TBABs pre-acclimated to higher methanol concentrations took less time to reach this steady-state. It was concluded, therefore, that steady and monitored growth of TBAB biomass is an essential factor in maximizing fungi’s ability to metabolize VOCs and that a new ecological biofiltration model may be the most effective at VOC purification.

Influence of Ethanol on Probiotic and Culture Bacteria <i>Lactobacillus bulgaricus</i>and <i>Streptococcus thermophilus</i>within a Therapeutic Product

Probiotic bacteria in plain yogurt namely of Lactobacillus ssp. have been reported to treat thrush, diarrhea, athlete’s foot, jock itch and vaginal yeast infections. Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgarius (LB-12) and Streptococcus thermophilus (ST-m5) are lactic acid bacteria widely used in the manufacture of yogurt. Alcohol is used in manufacture of some medications such as cough syrups and some products such as eggnog and rum-raisin ice cream. The objectives were to study the effect of food grade ethanol on the growth of yogurt culture bacteria and the physico-chemical characteristics of therapeutic yogurt. The treatments were 0% (control), 2.5%, 5%, and 7.5% v/v ethanol in plain yogurt. The ethanol was incorporated by stirring it into one day old plain yogurt. Product characteristics were studied weekly for a month of refrigerated (4?C) storage. Data were analyzed using Proc mixed model of Statistical Analysis System. The ethanol amount × storage period interaction effect was significant for Lactobacillus bulgaricus counts while the ethanol amount × storage period effect was not significant for Streptococcus thermophilus counts, viscosity, pH and titratable acidity (TA). Therapeutic yogurts with ethanol, at these concentrations, can successfully be manufactured without adversely influencing counts of its probiotic bacteria over product shelf life.

In recent years,polymer nanocomposites have attracted extensive attention in materials science because they often exhibit a field of different properties from those of their counterpart polymer micro-composites whose matrices contain the same inorganic *** novel polyurethane nanocomposite to reduce toxic gases was designed to improve the possibility to resolve several industrial and environmental problems after combustion as intoxication by *** to this,stoichiometry of rigid polyurethane foam was based on nonmetallic nanoparticles for fireproof *** the other hand,we realized synthesis and characterization for the novel polymer,Fourier Transform Infrared(FT-IR)spectroscopy and X-ray scattering were applied to collect information on the nanometer-scale physical structure of the polyurethane ***,scanning electron microscopy(SEm)was used to understand the internal nanostructure before and after combustion,as well as the gas chromatography coupled system with thermal desorption analysis(GC/mSD),to identify the chemical compositions and compounds resulted by the combustion gases generated of the polyurethane nanocomposites foams that can produce *** addition,the mechanical and flammability properties of rigid polyurethane were evaluated according to international standard test methods of burning of polymer for example using test ASTm *** to this,polymer nanocomposites for flammability,not only improves the fireproof properties,but can also improve others properties as can be mechanical and thermal stability providing it the potential to bring true applications to materials to take advantage of the synergies in the polymer *** on this evidence,nanopolyurethane could be a new and functional polymer for construction,automotive,or textile industries.

Impact of Ferritin Load on Gonadal Reserve among Regular Transfused β-Thalassemia

Background: Iron overload in association with persistent anemia is responsible for endocrine dysfunction in β-thalassemia patients, blood transfusion combined with iron-chelation can modify life quality in these children, but they tend to suffer from delayed maturity and endocrine dysfunction. Aim: This study aims to correlate degree of hypogonadism to ferritin load in regular transfused β-thalassemia patients. methods: It was carried out on 30 β-thalassemia major (Tm) patients aged 12 to 18 years, puberty was assessed clinically, blood picture on Cell-Dyne 2700, ferritin level and pattern of FSH, LH, testosterone and estradiol before and after gonadotropin (GnRH) analogue stimulation test, they were determined on ARCHITECT ABBOTT system. Results: Twenty patients had not yet achieved puberty, FSH level was 1.45 ± 1.88 mIU/ml before (GnRH) analogue and 3.78 ± 4.19 mIU/ml after 4 hours of injection. LH level was 1.91 ± 4.79 mIU/ml before (GnRH) test, while after 4 hours it was 6.52 ± 7.50 mIU/ml, 88.24% of males had low serum testosterone level, 84.6% of girls had low serum estradiol level, FSH, LH, estradiol, testosterone before and after GNRH analogue were statistically insignificant, mean ferritin level was 3344.32 ± 1142.142 ng/ml, with insignificant correlation to hormonal pattern before and after GnRH therapy. Conclusion: Iron overload and hypogonadism are the presenting data in this study, insignificant correlation between ferritin level and hormonal reserve pattern, there may be another etiology in pathophysiology of low gonadal reserve such as severe anemia, chronic disease and may be genetic predisposition underlying susceptibility to iron toxicity, which need further investigations.

BACKGROUND Antiviral treatment of patients with chronic hepatitis B(CHB)in the grey zone of treatment comands risk management in order to optimize the health *** this sense,the identification of HBV mutants related with an increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)could be useful to identify subpopulations with potential indication of antiviral *** To analyze the prevalence/persistence of hepatitis B virus(HBV)preS and basal core promoter(BCP)/precore/core variants associated to HCC development in CHB patients in the grey *** Work was designed as a longitudinal retrospective study,including 106 plasma samples from 31 patients with CHB in the grey zone of treatment:Hepatitis B e antigen negative,HBV-DNA levels between 12-20000 IU/mL,normal or discordant transaminase levels during follow up and mild/moderate necroinflammatory activity in liver biopsy or Fibroscan(up to 9.5 kPa).Serum HBVDNA was tested using the Abbott Real Time HBV Assay and the BCP/precore/core and the hepatitis B surface antigen(HBsAg)coding regions were analyzed in positive samples by PCR/bulk-sequencing to identify the HCCrelated HBV *** High-risk HCC related mutants were detected in 24(77%)patients:19(61%)in the BCP/precore/core,and 7(23%)in the HBsAg coding region(2 preS1 and 5 preS2 deletions).The prevalence of preS deletions was genotype-dependent:3/5(60%)patients with preS2 deletions and 1/2 with preS1 deletions were infected with the HBV-E *** HBV-E was the most prevalent in sub-Saharan patients,a correlation between preS deletions and ethnicity was also found:6/8(75%)sub-Saharan vs 1/19(5%)Caucasian patients had preS deletions(P=0.00016).Remarkably,this correlation was maintained in those patients infected with HBV-A,a minor genotype in sub-Saharan patients:2/2 patients infected with HBV-A from West Africa vs 0/6 of Caucasian origin had preS *** HCC related variants were the major strains and persisted over time(up to 48 mo).Pa

The purpose of this study was to prepare and characterize of holmium-beta-cyclodextrin complex (Ho-β-CD) in order to increase the solubility and stability of Holmium. To achieve this goal, Ho-β-CD complex was prepared by evaporation method of holmium and beta cyclodextrin solutions in a proportion (1:1) and (1:3), respectively. Infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy, X-Ray Diffraction were performed to identify the complex. morphology of the Ho, β-CD, and Ho-β-CD were studied using Scanning Electron microscopy (SEm).

Appraisal of Five Clinical Guidelines for the management of Hypertension in Andean Countries and Europe

There is global concern on the methodological limitations, transferability and effectiveness of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for chronic non-communicable diseases, particularly for hypertension. Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru have regularly produced CPGs;however no formal assessment has been done on their contents, transferability and effectiveness. The past decade saw significant migration from Andean countries to Europe. Knowing how European CPGs compare with those produced in Andean countries is necessary to recommend future changes targeted to the migrant population. A systematic search of CPGs was done on indexed databases and non-indexed publications. Recognized and approved CPGs were identified by technical officers in the ministries of Health of the respective countries. The guidelines of the European Society of hypertension and four selected CPGs from the Andean countries were assessed by two independent evaluators using the “Agree II instrument for assessing clinical practice guidelines, AGREE II Consortium, may 2009”. Comparison of the CPGs is based on the six domain scores provided by the Agree II instrument. The overall score of CPGs ranged from 1.85 to 2.94 of 6 maximum possible. The European CPG scored highest in 3 of 6 domains compared, most notably in rigor of development. Average domain scores for clarity of presentation (0.84) and scope and purpose (0.64) were highest scores for applicability (0.30). Stakeholder involvement (0.28) and rigor of development (0.17) were the lowest. The CPGs assessed appear to fail meeting the standards of quality and pertinence. They show a progressive worsening from domains declaring good intentions of being clear, to those which measure their hard aspects and implications.

Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)is a disease produced by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)and it is currently causing a catastrophic pandemic affecting humans *** disease has been lethal for approximately 3.12 million people around the world since January ***,among the most affected countries,mexico ranks third in deaths after the United States of America and *** the high number of deceased people might also be explained by social aspects and lifestyle customs in mexico,there is a relationship between this high proportion of deaths and comorbidities such as high blood pressure(HBP),type 2 diabetes,obesity,and metabolic *** official epidemiological figures reported by the mexican government have indicated that 18.4%of the population suffers from HBP,close to 10.3%of adults suffer from type 2 diabetes,and approximately 36.1%of the population suffers from *** in the gut microbiota(Gm)have been associated with these diseases and with COVID-19 severity,presumably due to inflammatory *** data about the association between Gm dysbiosis and metabolic diseases could suggest that the high levels of susceptibility to SARSCoV-2 infection and COVID-19 morbidity in the mexican population are primarily due to the prevalence of type 2 diabetes,obesity,and metabolic syndrome.
