Unlike European species,the potential of Nearctic syrphids as biological control agents is still poorly ***,the American hoverfly,Eupeodes americanus(Wiedemann),has recently demonstrated promising traits as a biocontrol agent,notably against the foxglove aphid,Aulacorthum solani Kaltenbach,on *** present study aims to extend our knowledge of the American hoverfly by evaluating its potential as a biocontrol agent in a banker plant system against the melon aphid,Aphis gossypi Glover,in a greenhouse cucumber *** preimaginal development and voracity of *** were compared when preying upon the focal prey/pest(***)or the banker prey(bird cherry-oat aphid,Rhopalosiphum padi L.)by daily observations of larvae from egg to *** development time,survival rate,and occurrence of deformation were similar on both prey *** weight of third instar and pupae,however,was higher for larvae that fed on the banker *** ad libitum voracity of the syrphid larvae was generally very high and did not significantly differ between prey species,except for the third-instar larvae which consumed more focal *** suggest that a banker plant system involving the bird cherry-oat aphid may be a promising tactic for utilizing *** for melon aphid biocontrol.

Interactions between surface gravity wave and submerged horizontal flexible structures are studied under the assumption of small amplitude water wave theory and structural response. The generalized dispersion relation associated with surface gravity wave interaction with submerged horizontal flexible plate is analyzed to understand the characteristics of the two propagating modes due to the presence of the free surface and submerged horizontal plate. The phase and group velocities are studied in order to analyze the effect of submerged flexible plate on gravity wave motion. The expansion formulae based on Green’s function technique and eigenfunction expansion method using Fourier transform with appropriate orthogonal mode-coupling relation associated with surface gravity wavemaker problems are derived and compared in both the cases of water of finite and infinite depths. The usefulness of the expansion formulae is demonstrated by deriving the solution for surface gravity wave interaction with submerged articulated flexible plate in water of finite depth. Several numerical results on reflection and transmission coefficients related to submerged flexible plate are presented in order to understand the effect of submerged flexible structure on surface wave motion in different cases.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)is the leading cause of diffuse liver *** accurate estimate of the fat in the liver is important in the diagnostic work-up of patients with NAFLD because the degree of liver steatosis is linked to the metabolic syndrome and the cardiovascular ***(US)B-mode imaging allows to subjectively estimate the fatty infiltration in the liver;however,it has a low performance for the detection of mild *** US is based on the analysis of the radiofrequency echoes detected by an US system,and it allows to calculate a backscatter coefficient or an attenuation coefficient or the sound *** estimation of the backscatter coefficient is rather cumbersome and requires the use of a phantom for addressing all sources of *** attenuation parameter(CAP)available on the FibroScan system(Echosens,France)measures the attenuation of the US *** is accurate in grading fatty infiltration-even though there is an overlap between consecutive grade of liver steatosis-and the values are not influenced by liver *** US manufacturers are developing or have already developed software for quantifying the attenuation of the US *** results show that proprietary technologies implemented in US systems seem more accurate than CAP for grading liver *** available method for quantifying liver steatosis is based on the computation of the sound speed and the initial results appear promising.

The joint design criteria of significant wave heights and wind speeds are quite important for the structural reliability of fixed offshore ***,the design method that regards different ocean environmental variables as independent is *** the present study,we introduce a bivariate sample consisting of the maximum wave heights and concomitant wind speeds of the threshold by using the peak-over-threshold and declustering *** selecting the appropriate bivariate copulas and univariate distributions and blocking the sample into years,the bivariate compound distribution of annual extreme wave heights and concomitant wind speeds is *** joint design criteria,namely,the joint probability density method and the conditional probability method,are applied to obtain the joint return values of significant wave heights and wind *** show that(28.5±0.5)m s^(-1)is the frequently obtained wind speed based on the Atlantic dataset,and these joint design values are more appropriate than those calculated by univariate analysis in the fatigue design.

Cancer theranostics is a recent concept that aims to combine in the same device diagnostic and therapeutic features. Magnetic nanoparticles(m NPs) are commonly used as a critical part of these systems due to their ability to respond to an external magnetic field. Consequently, m NPs can generate heat when an alternating magnetic field is applied and enhance image contrast in magnetic resonance. However, direct administration of m NPs intravenously or directly in the tumor can lead to undesired side effects because of m NP elimination by macrophages or leakage to healthy tissues. Therefore, m NPs can be retained in a polymeric nanofibrous mesh, thus preventing misplacing or loss of m NPs. Furthermore, these magnetic nanofibers can be directly implanted in the tumor site, thus ensuring high m NPs loading and higher magnetic response. In addition, polymeric nanofibers produced by electrospinning are frequently used to maintain a sustained drug release in the tumor site. Therefore,a magnetic polymeric nanofiber produced by electrospinning is an ideal nanosystem for cancer theranostics application. This review summarizes the most recent developments of magnetic nanofibers produced by electrospinning for cancer theranostics applications.

Since neodymium magnet possesses an extremely strong magnetic field, resulting from the combination of neodymium, iron and boron, it has become the most used in designing autonomous sumo robots. When it is mounted under the structure of this robot, the magnet produces a large amount of normal force resulting from the interaction between its field lines and the steel frame of the arena, reducing the risk of slipping its wheels. Thus, the heavier a robot, the greater the difficulty for the opponent to remove it from the arena. This article explains the properties of Nd-Fe-Br magnets and analyzes the influence of these characteristics in the relation induction/weight. Additionally, to a comparative analysis, this research analyzes the positioning, geometry and polarization of the magnets under study, based on numerical results obtained using Inventor and K ＆ J Magnets Calculator software, given that these factors influence in their energetic product generation. Furthermore, more than just working with what we believe is a subject of great interest for sumo robot＇s teams, this study encourages their competitiveness, an essential factor for the competition.

Spudcan Penetration Simulation Using the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian Method with Thermo-Mechanical Coupled Analysis

A novel modeling technique based on the coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian(CEL) method is provided to solve the geotechnical problems with large deformations. The technique is intended to solve the update problem of soil mechanical properties during spudcan penetration in normally consolidated clay soil. In the CEL model, the normal method of assigning an increasing shear strength profile with depth(NA) is defective due to its Eulerian framework. In this paper, a new technique is proposed to update soil material properties by introducing thermo-mechanical coupled analysis(TMCA) to the CEL models. During establishment of the CEL models, the optimal penetration velocity and minimum mesh size are determined through parametric studies. Reasonability and accuracy are then verified through comparison of the preliminary results with the soil flow configuration and penetration resistance(Fv) of a centrifuge test, and the results of the proposed method are compared with those of the remeshing and interpolation technique with small strain(RITSS) method. To achieve a CEL model with satisfactory accuracy, the NA and TMCA methods implemented in the CEL models and the RITSS method are first adopted in weightless soil. Comparison of the findings with those obtained in previous studies shows that the TMCA method can update material properties and predict Fv. The TMCA method is then applied to soils with self-weight and different shear strength profiles. Results show that the proposed method is capable of accurately modeling the large deformation problem of spudcan penetration in non-homogeneous clay.
