Living photovoltaics are microbial electrochemical devices that use whole cell–electrode interactions to convert solar energy to *** bottleneck in these technologies is the limited electron transfer between the microbe and the electrode *** study focuses on enhancing this transfer by engineering a polydopamine(PDA)coating on the outer membrane of the photosynthetic microbe Synechocystis *** coating provides a conductive nanoparticle shell to increase electrode adhesion and improve microbial charge extraction.A combination of scanning electron microscopy(SEM),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),UV–Vis absorption,and Raman spectroscopy measurements were used to characterize the nanoparticle shell under various synthesis *** cell viability and activity were further assessed through oxygen evolution,growth curve,and confocal fluorescence microscopy *** results show sustained cell growth and detectable PDA surface coverage under slightly alkaline conditions(pH 7.5)and at low initial dopamine(DA)concentrations(1 mM).The exoelectrogenicity of the cells prepared under these conditions was also characterized through cyclic voltammetry(CV)and chronoamperometry(CA).The measurements show a three-fold enhancement in the photocurrent at an applied bias of 0.3 V(***/AgCl[3 M KCl])compared to non-coated *** study thus lays the framework for engineering the next generation of living photovoltaics with improved performances using biosynthetic electrodes.

Therapeutic strategies for pediatric non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: A challenge for health care providers

Non-alcoholic steato-hepatitis (NASH) is related to insulin resistance and, thus, frequently occurs as part of the metabolic changes that accompany obesity, diabetes and hyperlipidemia. In childhood, the overwhelming boost of obesity and its co-morbidities have lead to the extraordinarily increased prevalence of NASH. Establishing effective therapeutic strategies to treat the disease represents the challenge for hepatologists and gastroenterologists in the next decade. Therapeutic approaches have aimed at treating associated conditions (obesity, insulin resistance, hyperlipemia, etc ) or reducing liver oxidative damage (vitamin E).

Natural sediment at a dam and its inorganic materials as adsorbents of praseodymium(Pr(Ⅲ))

The sediment deposited behind a dam(DS) and its inorganic materials(IM-DS) were characterized and used for the removal of praseodymium(Pr) from aqueous solutions. Quartz, albite, and kaolinite were found in the sediment by X-ray diffraction. Kinetic data fit well to a pseudo second-order model, the equilibrium time for DS and IM-DS was 2 h and 3 min, respectively, and the adsorption capacity was higher for Pr/DS(qe= 4.91 mg/g) than for Pr/IM-DS(qe= 3.01 mg/g) in these conditions. Pr/DS and Pr/IM-DS data isotherms were in agreement with the Langmuir-Freundlich model and the maximum adsorption capacities were 4.95 and 4.01 mg/g, respectively. Both processes are exothermic(enthalpy change, ΔH0=-22.8 and-21.8 k J/mol for DS and IM-DS, respectively), the increase of the randomness is small, and the feasibility and spontaneity are low. Praseodymium was desorbed by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium(EDTA-Na2), sodium chloride, nitric, citric, and humic acids solutions, and one hundred percent of praseodymium was desorbed by the EDTA-Na2solution. The Pr2(EDTA)3(praseodymium ethylenediaminetetraacetate) complex was completely desorbed from both materials(DS and IM-DS). Distribution coefficients(KD) depend upon praseodymium concentration,temperature, p H, and the kind of adsorbent. Chemical reactions of praseodymium with kaolinite and iron minerals could explain the adsorption.

Analysis of Transcriptome Changes Induced by Ptr ToxA in Wheat Provides Insights into the Mechanisms of Plant Susceptibility

To obtain greater insight into the molecular events underlying plant disease susceptibility, we studied transcriptome changes induced by a host-selective toxin of Pyrenophora tritici-repentis, Ptr ToxA （ToxA）, on its host plant, wheat. Transcriptional profiling of ToxA-treated leaves of a ToxA-sensitive wheat cultivar was performed using the GeneChip Wheat Genome Array. An improved and up-to-date annotation of the wheat microarray was generated and a new tool for array data analysis （BRAT） was developed, and both are available for public use via a web-based interface. Our data indicate that massive transcriptional reprogramming occurs due to ToxA treatment, including cellular responses typically associated with defense. In addition, this study supports previous results indicating that ToxA-induced cell death is triggered by impairment of the photosynthetic machinery and accumulation of reactive oxygen species. Based on results of this study, we propose that ToxA acts as both an elicitor and a virulence factor.

Evaluating Common Strategies for the Efficiency of Feature Selection in the Context of Microarray Analysis

The recent explosion of high-throughput technology has been accompanied by a corresponding rapid increase in the number of new statistical methods for developing prognostic and predictive signatures. Three commonly used feature selection techniques for time-to-event data: single gene testing (SGT), Elastic net and the Maximizing R Square Algorithm (MARSA) are evaluated on simulated datasets that vary in the sample size, the number of features and the correlation between features. The results of each method are summarized by reporting the sensitivity and the Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (AUC). The performance of each of these algorithms depends heavily on the sample size while the number of features entered in the analysis has a much more modest impact. The coefficients estimated utilizing SGT are biased towards the null when the genes are uncorrelated and away from the null when the genes are correlated. The Elastic Net algorithms perform better than MARSA and almost as well as the SGT when the features are correlated and about the same as MARSA when the features are uncorrelated.

Understanding Dependent Competing Risks： A Simulation Study to Illustrate the Relationship Between Cause-Specific Hazard and Marginal Hazard

In the analysis of competing risk data, the observed effect of a covariate can be obtained via a Fine and Gray sub-distribution hazard ratio. Sometimes, it is also desirable to obtain the virtual effect of a covariate as if the competing risks were non-existent. Under the latent failure time scenario, when the event of interest and the competing risk event are independent, the cause-specific hazard ratio obtained from the Cox model where the competing events are censored represents the ratio of the marginal hazards and can be interpreted as the virtual effect of the covariate. However, when the two events are not independent, the cause-specific hazard ratio is not the ratio of the marginal hazards as the ratio depends not only on the marginal hazards but also on the correlation between the competing risk and the event of interest. Using simulation, we investigated the degree to which the cause-specific hazard ratio changes relative to the marginal hazard with this correlation. It was found that the discrepancy between the cause-specific hazard ratio and the theoretical marginal hazard ratio increased as the proportion of competing risk events and the correlation between the events increased （〉0.2）. Depending on the direction of the correlation, the cause-specific hazard ratio can over- or under-estimate the marginal hazard ratio. Using real-life datasets, we show how these results can be used to make inferences on the virtual effects.
