Objective： To investigate the effectiveness of curcumin, a natural polyphenolic compound with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, on the frequency of symptoms of anxiety and depression in obese individuals. Methods： In this double blind, cross-over trial, 30 obese subjects were randomized to receive either curcumin （1 g/day） or placebo for a period of 30 days. Following a wash-out interval of 2 weeks, each subject was crossed over to the alternative regimen for a further 30 days. Severity of anxiety and depression was assessed at baseline and at weeks 4, 6 and 10 of the trial using the Beck Anxiety Inventory （BAI） and Beck Depression Inventory （BDI） scales, respectively. Results： Mean BAI score was found to be significantly reduced following curcumin therapy （P=0.03）. However, curcumin supplementation did not exert any significant impact on BDI scores （P=0.7）. Conclusion： Curcumin has a potential anti-anxiety effect in individuals with obesity.

AIM: To investigate the serum level of the brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in age -related macular degeneration (AMD) and healthy control subjects. The disruption in the tight balance of neuroinflammatory and neuroprotective processes in an immune -privileged site like retina is proposed to contribute to the pathogenesis of AMD. One of the main neuroprotective mediators in the central nervous system Is BDNF with its serum level notably affected in several neurodegenerative disorders. METHODS: Thirty-six patients'with AMD and 36 age-matched controls were enrolled in this study. The serum level of BDNF was measured using the enzyme -linked immunosorbent assay method. Results were analyzed to compare case and control values. Comparisons were also made between the BDNF level of wet- vsdry-AMD, and male vs female patients and controls. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Student's t-test were employed to analyze the data. RESULTS: The mean BDNF levels in AMD group were significantly higher than the control group. Furthermore, our analysis revealed greater BDNF values in all AMD subgroups compared to controls (P=0.004, 0.005, 0.001 and 0.02 for male wet-AMD, male dry-AMD, female wetAMD and female dry-AMD vscontrols, respectively). The BDNF level however did not vary between wet- and dryAMD patients (P=0.74). While within-group comparisons in males and females of AMD and control groups did not show any difference in BDNF (P=0.16, 0.64 and 0.85 for wet -AMD, dry -AMD and control groups, respectively), between -group data showed a higher mean BDNF in both male and female AMD subjects than their peer controls. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that the serum BDNF level is different in patients with AMD as compared to subjects without AMD. Future attempts should be done to unravel beneficial or deleterious effect of this neurotrophin in the pathogenesis of AMD.

考虑到在非原位铸造法制备复合材料时不使用TiO2纳米颗粒作为AA2024合金的增强相,采用搅拌铸造法制备AA2024−x%TiO2(np)(x=0,0.5%,1%,体积分数)纳米复合材料。利用光学显微镜和扫描电子显微镜研究样品的结构性能,并采用硬度和拉伸试验研究其力学性能。结果表明,添加1%TiO2(体积分数)纳米颗粒后,样品的晶粒尺寸和枝晶臂间距分别减小约66%和31%;硬度、抗拉强度、屈服强度和伸长率分别提高约25%、28%、4%和163%。在拉伸试样的断口表面观察到团聚在基体中的纳米颗粒。纳米复合材料结构中纳米颗粒的团聚是其强度在强化机制下减弱的因素。

Marine structures, such as Groynes, Sea walls and Detached Breakwaters, are constructed in coast of area to improve coast stability against bed erosions due to changing wave and current pattern. Marine mechanisms and interaction with the hydraulic structures need to be intensively studied. Groynes are one of the most prominent structures that are used in shore protection and littoral sediment. The main hydraulic function of the groyne is to control the long shore current and littoral sediment transport. This structure can be submerged and provide the necessary beach protection without negative aesthetic impact. However, for submerged structures adopted for beach protection, the shoreline response to these structures is not well understood. The objective of this study is to predict sediment transport in the vicinity of submerged groyne and comparison with non-submerged groyne focusing on a part of the coast at Dahane Sar Sefidrood, Guilan Province, Iran, where serious coast erosion has been occurred. The simulations were designed using a one-line model which can be used as a first approximation of shoreline prediction in the vicinity of groyne. The results of the proposed model are compared with experimental data to determine the shape of the coast. The results of predicted beach deformation show that when submerged groyne construct in the beach, sediment accumulation will be slightly less than the non-submerged groyne; because transfer coefficient for the submerged groyne is more than non-submerged groyne. This result will cause more sediment passing on submerged groyne. Finally, the result of the present study show that using submerged groyne is an efficient way to control the sediment and beach erosion without causing severe environmental effect on the coast.

A dynamic experimental set-up was utilized to measure ibuprofen solubility in supercritical CO2 at the pressure range of 8-13 MPa and the temperatures of 308, 313 and 318 K. Mole fraction values varied from0.015×10-3to 3.261×10-3and correlated by using seven different semi empirical equations of state(Bartle,Modified Bartle, Mendez-Teja, Modified Mendez-Teja, Kumar-Johnson, Sung-shim and Gordillo) as well as seven cubic equations of state(van der Waals, Redlich-Kwong, Soave-Redlich-Kwong, Peng-Robinson, Stryjek-Vera,Patel-Teja-Valderana and Pazuki). Single and twin-parametric van der Walls mixing rules(vdW1, vdW2) were applied in order to estimate the supercritical solution properties. The physicochemical properties were also obtained using Joback, Lydersen and Ambrose methods. Absolute average relatives deviation(AARD) were calculated and compared for all the correlating systems. Results showed that among the cubic equations of state(EOSs) the Pazuki equation(AARD=19.85% using vdW1 and AARD=8.79% using vdW2) and SRK equation(AARD=19.20%using vdW1 and AARD=10.03% using vdW2) predicted the ibuprofen solubility in supercritical CO2with the least error in comparison to the others. Among the semi-empirical EOSs the most desirable deviation(AARD<10%) was obtained by using Modified Bartle and Modified Mendez-Teja equations in all the studied temperatures.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of milk or molasses kefir as a probiotic on growth performance, carcass traits, serum biochemistry and humoral immune responses in broiler chickens. A total of 192 one-d-old as hatched broiler chicks(Ross 308) were randomly allotted to 4 treatments, each with 4 replicate pens of 12 chicks. The following treatments were applied: 1) a basal diet(C) and normal drinking water, 2) 2% milk kefir in drinking water, 3) 2% molasses kefir in drinking water, and 4) the diet C supplemented with commercial probiotic. At d 42, eight birds per treatment were killed for determination of carcass traits. Broilers at 28 days of age were bled for measuring antibody titers against Newcastle disease virus(NDV) and avian influenza virus(AIV), at 30 days of age for antibody titers against sheep red blood cell(SRBC), and at 42 days of age for biochemical analysis. Supplementing 2%milk kefir increased body weight of broilers at 28 and 42 days of age(P 0.05) influenced. Broilers supplemented with molasses kefir, had a significantly lower concentration of serum total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol and elevated high density lipoprotein cholesterol at 42 days of age(P < 0.05). BACKGROUND： Urtica dioica extract has been shown to play a protective role in the neurodegeneration associated with diabetes mellitus. OBJECTIVE： To verify the neuroprotective efficacy of nettle extract on pyramidal cell density in the CA3 hippocampal subfield following administration of Urtica dioica extract to young diabetic rats. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： A randomized, controlled, neurobiological study was performed at the Department of Histology and Embryology at the Gorgan University of Medical Sciences in Iran from 2006 to 2007. MATERIALS： Urtica dioica leaves were collected from a cultivated plant in the suburb of Gorgan （northem Iran） and taxonomically identified by the Department of Pharmacognosy, Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences. METHODS： A total of 20 male, albino, Wistar rats, aged 6-7 postnatal weeks, were randomly assigned to four groups： normal control, diabetic model, preventive, and treatment, with five rats in each group. Diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin （80 mg/kg） in the diabetic and treatment groups. Rats from the preventive group received a hydroalcoholic extract of Urtica dioica （100 mg/kg per day） during the first 5 days, and then streptozotocin （80 mg/kg） was administered on day 6. One week following the streptozotocin injection, rats in the treatment group were intraperitoneally administered hydroalcoholic extract of Urtica dioica （100 mg/kg per day） for 4 weeks. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： Following administration of Urtica dioica extract, the dorsal hippocampal formation of the right cerebral hemispheres was stained with cresyl violet. Area densities of CA3 pyramidal cells were measured. RESULTS： The diabetic, preventive, and treatment groups exhibited reduced cell densities compared with the control group （P 〈 0.05）. Moreover, densities of CA3 pyramidal cells in the treatment group were significantly reduced compared with the diabetic model group （P 〈 0.05）. CONCLUSION： The Urtica dioica extract exhi
