Brain-derived neurotrophic factor in patients with advanced age-related macular degeneration

AIM: To investigate the serum level of the brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in age -related macular degeneration (AMD) and healthy control subjects. The disruption in the tight balance of neuroinflammatory and neuroprotective processes in an immune -privileged site like retina is proposed to contribute to the pathogenesis of AMD. One of the main neuroprotective mediators in the central nervous system Is BDNF with its serum level notably affected in several neurodegenerative disorders. METHODS: Thirty-six patients'with AMD and 36 age-matched controls were enrolled in this study. The serum level of BDNF was measured using the enzyme -linked immunosorbent assay method. Results were analyzed to compare case and control values. Comparisons were also made between the BDNF level of wet- vsdry-AMD, and male vs female patients and controls. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Student's t-test were employed to analyze the data. RESULTS: The mean BDNF levels in AMD group were significantly higher than the control group. Furthermore, our analysis revealed greater BDNF values in all AMD subgroups compared to controls (P=0.004, 0.005, 0.001 and 0.02 for male wet-AMD, male dry-AMD, female wetAMD and female dry-AMD vscontrols, respectively). The BDNF level however did not vary between wet- and dryAMD patients (P=0.74). While within-group comparisons in males and females of AMD and control groups did not show any difference in BDNF (P=0.16, 0.64 and 0.85 for wet -AMD, dry -AMD and control groups, respectively), between -group data showed a higher mean BDNF in both male and female AMD subjects than their peer controls. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that the serum BDNF level is different in patients with AMD as compared to subjects without AMD. Future attempts should be done to unravel beneficial or deleterious effect of this neurotrophin in the pathogenesis of AMD.

Synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of oilfield-produced water by electrospun photocatalytic fibers of Polystyrene/Nanorod-Graphitic carbon nitride

Graphitic carbon nitride with nanorod structure(Nr-GCN)was synthesized using melamine as a precursor without any other reagents by hydrothermal pretreatment ***,FTIR,SEM,N_(2)adsorption-desorption from BET,UV-Vis DRS spectroscopy,and photoluminescence were used to characterize the prepared ***,the photoelectrochemical behavior of nanoparticles was studied by photocurrent transient response and cyclic voltammetry ***(PS)fibrous mat was fabricated by electrospinning technique and used as a support for the stabilization of the *** performance of the synthesized nanoparticles and photocatalytic fibers(PS/Nr-GCN)was evaluated in oilfield-produced water treatment under visible light *** this process,oil contaminants were adsorbed by hydrophobic polystyrene fibers and simultaneously degraded by *** removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand(COD)has been obtained 96.6%and 98.4%by Nr-GCN and PS/Nr-GCN,respectively,at the optimum conditions of pH4,photocatalyst dosage 0.5 g/L,COD initial concentration 550 mg/L,and illumination time 150 *** gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy analysis results showed 99.3%removal of total petroleum hydrocarbons using photocatalytic fibers of PS/*** results demonstrated that the GCN has outstanding features like controllable morphology,visible-light-driven,and showing high potential in oily wastewater ***,the synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalytic degradation is an effective technique in oilfield-produced water treatment.

Feasibility of achieving net-zero energy performance in high-rise buildings using solar energy

As part of a broad strategy to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and limit global warming,many countries are requiring all new buildings to have net-zero energy *** requires that on-site energy use not exceed on-site generation of renewable energy(taken here to be solar energy),or equivalently,that the building Energy Use Intensity(EUI,kWh/m^(2)a)not exceed the supply of on-site solar energy(electricity and heat)per m^(2)of floor area per *** this basis,we find that achieving net-zero energy performance in an archetype 40-story square building in 16 different cities of North America requires EUI of 17–24 kWh/m^(2)a using PV panels,and 19–28 kWh/m^(2)a using PVT *** building orientation to a non-square floor shape can improve maximum permitted EUI by up to 50%in PV and 60%in PVT ***,the best-performing residential and commercial buildings have EUIs of 50–75 kWh/m^(2)*** if building heights are limited to 5–10 floors does the available solar energy,and thus the permitted EUI,reach 50–75 kWh/m^(2)***,we recommend that policymakers not require high-rise buildings to be net-zero energy,unless they are prepared to limit building heights to 5–10 floors.

Hyperspectral(HS)image classification plays a crucial role in numerous areas including remote sensing(RS),agriculture,and the monitoring of the *** band selection in HS images is crucial for improving the efficiency and accuracy of image *** process involves selecting the most informative spectral bands,which leads to a reduction in data *** on these key bands also enhances the accuracy of classification algorithms,as redundant or irrelevant bands,which can introduce noise and lower model performance,are *** this paper,we propose an approach for HS image classification using deep Q learning(DQL)and a novel multi-objective binary grey wolf optimizer(MOBGWO).We investigate the MOBGWO for optimal band selection to further enhance the accuracy of HS image *** the suggested MOBGWO,a new sigmoid function is introduced as a transfer function to modify the wolves’*** primary objective of this classification is to reduce the number of bands while maximizing classification *** evaluate the effectiveness of our approach,we conducted experiments on publicly available HS image datasets,including Pavia University,Washington Mall,and Indian Pines *** compared the performance of our proposed method with several state-of-the-art deep learning(DL)and machine learning(ML)algorithms,including long short-term memory(LSTM),deep neural network(DNN),recurrent neural network(RNN),support vector machine(SVM),and random forest(RF).Our experimental results demonstrate that the Hybrid MOBGWO-DQL significantly improves classification accuracy compared to traditional optimization and DL ***-DQL shows greater accuracy in classifying most categories in both datasets *** the Indian Pine dataset,the MOBGWO-DQL architecture achieved a kappa coefficient(KC)of 97.68%and an overall accuracy(OA)of 94.32%.This was accompanied by the lowest root mean square error(RMSE)of 0.94,indicating very precise

Molecular investigation of exoU and exoY virulence genes in Pseudomonas aeruginosa collected from hospitalized patients in North of Iran:A descriptive-analytical study

Objective:To investigate the frequency of exoU and exoY genes in patients with Pseudomonas aeruginosa ***:In this study,100 clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were collected from patients hospitalized in educational-therapeutic hospitals and were identified using standard microbiological ***,the antibiotic resistance pattern of the isolates was determined by the disk agar diffusion *** bacterial DNAs were extracted by the alkaline lysis ***,the presence of exoU and exoY genes was evaluated by the PCR ***:In this study,47%,72%,29%,39%,40%,and 44%of the isolates were non-susceptible to piperacillin,aztreonam,ceftazidime,imipenem,tobramycin,and ciprofloxacin,*** addition,95%and 93%of the clinical isolates carried the exoU and exoY *** and fecal isolates had both virulence genes,while only one wound isolate had neither ***,all urinary isolates contained the exoY gene and only one isolate lacked the exoU ***,88 isolates simultaneously had both exoU and exoY ***:High prevalence of exoU and exoY genes in this region indicates a significant role of typeⅢsecretion system in pathogenesis of Pseudomonas *** typeⅢsecretion system may be a suitable target to reduce the pathogenicity of this bacterium.

Optimization of geometric parameters of reinforced sheets based on a cell-based smoothed discrete shear gap(CS-FEM-DSG3) method

Optimization of design features of reinforced sheet is investigated. Initially, equations governing composite structures are extracted based on Kirchhoff sheet model under bending using Hamilton's principal. Then, design parameters for the composite structure are extracted with simple supportive boundary conditions from proposed solution. Next, optimization is achieved by determining dimensions of a reinforced sheet specimen. Weight optimization of reinforced sheet structure has been obtained based on variations in thickness and number of longitudinal and transverse reinforcements. Buckling static characteristic is utilized in optimization process. To solve the extracted equations, semi-analytical method of CS-DSG3 has been applied. Results are presented in graphs that show variation of design parameters by changing the geometric parameters. ABAQUS software has been used for design verification. The results show that an increase in thickness of 3 mm skip value tends to be zero. Also, there is a change in the amount of deflection for sheets with a minimum thickness of 3 mm by increasing the number of longitudinal and transverse reinforcement. There is a good agreement between the numerical method of finite elements and the method X-FEM-DSG3.

Naturally fractured hydrocarbon reservoir simulation by elastic fracture modeling

Accurate fluid flow simulation in geologically complex reservoirs is of particular importance in construction of reservoir *** approaches in naturally fractured reservoir simulation involve use of unstructured grids or a structured grid coupled with locally unstructured grids and discrete fracture *** methods suffer from drawbacks such as lack of flexibility and of ease of *** this study,I combined fracture modeling by elastic gridding which improves flexibility,especially in complex *** proposed model revises conventional modeling fractures by hard rigid planes that do not change through *** is a dubious assumption,especially in reservoirs with a high production rate in the *** proposed elastic fracture modeling considers changes in fracture properties,shape and aperture through the *** strategy is only reliable for naturally fractured reservoirs with high fracture permeability and less permeable matrix and parallel fractures with less *** of elastic fracture modeling results with conventional modeling showed that these assumptions will cause production pressure to enlarge fracture apertures and change fracture shapes,which consequently results in lower production compared with what was previously *** is concluded that an elastic gridded model could better simulate reservoir performance.

3D object retrieval based on histogram of local orientation using one-shot score support vector machine

In this paper, a content based descriptor is pro- posed to retrieve 3D models, which employs histogram of local orientation （HLO） as a geometric property of the shape. The proposed 3D model descriptor scheme consists of three steps. In the first step, Poisson equation is utilized to define a 3D model signature. Next, the local orientation is calculated for each voxel of the model using Hessian matrix. As the final step, a histogram-based 3D model descriptor is extracted by accumulating the values of the local orientation in bins. Due to efficiency of Poisson equation in describing the models with various structures, the proposed descriptor is capable of discriminating these models accurately. Since, the inner vox- els have a dominant contribution in the formation of the de- scriptor, sufficient robustness against noise can be achieved. This is because the noise mostly influences the boundary vox- els. Furthermore, we improve the retrieval performance us- ing support vector machine based one-shot score （SVM-OSS） similarity measure, which is more efficient than the conven- tional methods to compute the distance of feature vectors. The rotation normalization is performed employing the prin- cipal component analysis. To demonstrate the applicability of HLO, we implement experimental evaluations of precision- recall curve on ESB, PSB and WM-SHREC databases of 3D models. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed descriptor compared to some current methods.
