Effect of protein sources on performance characteristics of turkeys in the first three weeks of life

Investigating the Possibilities of Specific Crash Type at Roundabouts

A comprehensive analysis of road crashes is extremely supportive in identifying existing deficiencies and in proposing new the design strategies. There are several research studies carried out for improving safety at roundabouts with the aim to altering conflict types, reducing the drivers’ speeds and crash severity, and highlighting a considerable differences in the safety performance of individual or group of roundabouts. The main purpose in this study was to explain the correlation between the types of crashes to the geometry of the roundabouts based on data collected from ten top poorly performing roundabouts in Toowoomba, Australia. Preliminary analysis revealed the following as top three types as prominent at these identified roundabouts such as angle crashes (74%), hit-object crashes (13%), and Rear-end crashes (9%). Excess proportion of specific crash method has been used as methodological tool to estimate the potential possibilities for a specific crash type exceeding threshold at each roundabout. Results show that eight out of ten roundabouts were regarded for a particular type of crash but only two roundabouts were viewed for two types of crashes such as angle and hit-object.

Male Tibetan macaques' (Macaca thibetana) choice of infant bridging partners

Adult male Tibetan(Macaca thibetana), Barbary(M. sylvanus), and stump-tailed macaques(M. arctoides) engage in bridging, a ritualized infant-handling behavior. Previous researchers found a bias toward the use of male infants for this behavior, but its function is debated. Explanations include three hypotheses: paternal care, mating effort, and agonistic buffering. We studied a group of habituated, provisioned Tibetan macaques to test whether adult males' affiliative relationships with females predicted their use of an infant for bridging. We also examined biases for sex, age, and individual in males' choice of bridging infant. We collected data via all occurrences, focal animal, and scan methods, from August to September 2011 at the Valley of the Wild Monkeys, China. We found that male infants were significantly preferred over females for bridging, but of three male infants in the group, only one was used by all males, while one male infant was used less often than expected. Adult males had females they were significantly more likely to be proximate to and/or to groom, but these corresponded to the mother of the bridging infant for only one male. Our results are most consistent with the agonistic buffering hypothesis: lower-ranked males used the alpha male's preferred bridging infant in an attempt to regulate their interactions with the alpha.

Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma(LSCC) remains a highly morbid and fatal disease. Historically, it has been a model example for organ preservation and treatment stratification paradigms. Unfortunately, survival for LSCC has stagnated over the past few decades. As the era of next-generation sequencing and personalized treatment for cancer approaches, LSCC may be an ideal disease for consideration of further treatment stratification and personalization. Here, we will discuss the important history of LSCC as a model system for organ preservation, unique and potentially targetable genetic signatures of LSCC, and methods for bringing stratified, personalized treatment strategies to the 21^(st) century.

Analysis of a ten step protocol to decrease postoperative spinal wound infections

AIM To define a ten-step protocol that reduced the incidence of surgical site infection in the spine surgery practice of the senior author and evaluate the support for each step based on current *** In response to unexplained increased infection rates at our institution following spine surgery,a ten-step protocol was implemented:(1) preoperative glycemic management based on hemoglobin A1 c(HbA1 c);(2) skin site preoperative preparation with 2% chlorhexidine gluconate disposable cloths;(3) limit operating room traffic;(4) cut the number of personnel in the room to the minimum required;(5) absolutely no flash sterilization of equipment;(6) double-gloving with frequent changing of outer gloves;(7) local application of vancomycin powder;(8) re-dosing antibiotic every 4 h for prolonged procedures and extending postoperative coverage to 72 h for high-risk patients;(9) irrigation of subcutaneous tissue with diluted povidone-iodine solution after deep fascial closure; and(10) use of Dura Prep skin preparation at the end of a case before skin closure. Through an extensive literature review,the current data available for each of the ten steps was *** Use of vancomycin powder in surgical wounds,routine irrigation of surgical site,and frequent changing of surgical gloves are strongly supported by the literature. Preoperative skin preparation with chlorhexidine wipes is similarly supported. The majority of current literature supports control of HbA1 c preoperatively to reduce risk of infection. Limiting the use of flash sterilization is supported,but has not been evaluated in spine-specific surgery. Limiting OR traffic and number of personnel in the OR are supported although without level 1 evidence. Prolonged use of antibiotics postoperativelyis not supported by the literature. Interleukin-7 Receptor Signaling Network:An Integrated Systems Perspective

Interleukin-7 （IL-7） is an essential cytokine for the development and homeostatic maintenance of T and B lymphocytes. Binding of IL-7 to its cognate receptor, the IL-7 receptor （IL-7R）, activates multiple pathways that regulate lymphocyte survival, glucose uptake, proliferation and differentiation. There has been much interest in understanding how IL-7 receptor signaling is modulated at multiple interconnected network levels. This review examines how the strength of the signal through the IL-7 receptor is modulated in T and B cells, including the use of shared receptor components, signaling crosstalk, shared interaction domains, feedback loops, integrated gene regulation, multimerization and ligand competition. We discuss how these network control mechanisms could integrate to govern the properties of IL-7R signaling in lymphocytes in health and disease. Analysis of IL-7 receptor signaling at a network level in a systematic manner will allow for a comprehensive approach to understanding the impact of multiple signaling pathways on lymphocyte biology. Implementation of an international medical student pen-pal club:survey outcomes of perceptions in cultural competency and global health
