Complete resection continues to be the gold standard for the treatment of earlystage lung *** landmark Lung Cancer Study Group trial in 1995 established lobectomy as the minimum intervention necessary for the management of early-stage non-small cell lung cancer,as it was associated with lower recurrence and metastasis rates than sublobar resection and lower postoperative morbidity and mortality than *** is a growing tendency to perform sublobar resection in selected cases,as,depending on factors such as tumor size,histologic subtype,lymph node involvement,and resection margins,it can produce similar oncological results to *** treatments such as stereotactic body radiotherapy and radiofrequency ablation can also produce good outcomes in inoperable patients or patients who refuse surgery.

Bacterial infection is considered to be one of the most critical health issues of the world. It is essential to overcome this problem by the development of new drugs. Marine organisms as corals, sponges, seaweeds, and other are an incredible source of novel pharmacologically active compounds. Herein, the antimicrobial activity (extract/fractions) of the invasive stony coraltubastraea coccinea was evaluated by the disk diffusion method against 21 microbial strains (AtCC and clinical strains). Micro broth dilution was used to determinate the MIC of the fractions that showed antimicrobial activity by the disk diffusion method. Bioautography assay was also performed. Our results showed that the n-butanol (BF) and aqueous fractions (AF) showed activity against AtCC strains Staphylococcus aureus (MIC 31.25 and 250 μg/mL),Salmonella typhimurium (MIC 125 and 500 μg/mL), Escherichia coli (MIC 62.5 and 500 μg/mL) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MIC 62.5 and 500 μg/mL), respectively. Moreover, BF fraction was also effective against the clinical strains S. aureus(MIC 62.5 μg/mL), Klebsiella pneumoniae Carbapenemase—KPC (MIC 125 μg/mL), Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus—MRSA (MIC 125 μg/mL) and Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus faecalis—VRE (MIC 62.5 μg/mL). the ratio MBC/MIC reinforces the bactericidal profile of BF fraction. the bioautography assay of BF fraction showed the presence of antimicrobial components at Rf0.55.

Modeling the Effects of Interactions between Environmental Variables on the State of an Environmental Issue: the Case of the Morelos State in Mexico

An important use of environmental indicators is oriented to know their individual impact on the whole environment quality. Nevertheless, most of the important causes of environment affectations are derived from multiple interactions between indicators which correspond more specifically to the environmental reality. the affectations derived from interactions should be analyzed and interpreted through numerical expressions representing a relevant challenge for developers of environmental indicators. to cope with the analysis and interpretation problem, we propose in this work a methodology in two senses: in a bottom-up sense a directed graph is built representing interactions between environmental indicators as behavioral relations, which exert an effect on the state of an environmental issue of a site over time (10 years);in a top-down sense to assist users in the analysis and interpretation of interactions through a computer interface that provides users with the capacity of knowing how and what relational behaviors between indicators are affecting, the most or the least, the performance of the environmental issue being studied. this methodology was applied to the analysis an interpretation of interactions between environmental variables that affect the state of an environmental quality issue related with the State of Morelos in Mexico. the results showed the adequate expressivity of a directed graph to represent interactions allowed to verify the coherence of the numerical values associated with their behaviors during a period of time and with their effects on the environmental issue under study.

Burn injury induces histopathological changes and cellproliferation in liver of rats

AIM: to investigate effects of severe burn injury(BI) in rat liver through the histopathological and inflammatory markers analysis. MEtHODS: Forty-two male Wistar rats were distributed into two groups, control(C) and subjected to scald BI(SBI). the animals were euthanized one, four and 14 d post sham or 45% of the total body surface BI. Liver fragments were submitted to histopathological, morphoquantitative(hepatocyte area and cell density), ciclooxigenase-2(COX-2) immunoexpression, and gene expression [real-time polymerase chain reaction for tumor necrosis factor(tNF)-α, inducible nitric oxide synthase(i NOS) and caspase-3] methods. RESULtS: Histopathological findings showed inflammatory process in all periods investigated and hepatocyte degeneration added to increased amount of connective tissue 14 d post injury. Hepatocyte area, the density of binucleated hepatocytes and density of sinusoidal cells of SBI groups were increased when compared with control. COX-2 immunoexpression was stronger in SBI groups. No differences were found in tNF-α, i NOS and caspase-3 gene expression. CONCLUSION: BI induces histopathological changes, upregulation of COX-2 immunoexpression, and cell proliferation in liver of rats.

Much of the genetic predisposition to polyposis,and particularly to serrated polyposis(SP),remains *** germline pathogenic variants in RNF43,a tumor suppressor that exerts negative feedback in the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway,have been causally linked to some SP cases(ted with increased risk of colorectal cancer(CRC).^(1) Most known hereditary CRC and polyposis genes affect DNA repair,BMP/tGF-β,or Wnt signaling,being the latter associated with adenomatous and serrated polyposis phenotypes.2 Based on this observation,we evaluated the presence and role of germline variants in those pathways in unsolved polyposis patients.

traumatic brain injuries are an important cause of morbidity and mortality around the world. these types of lesions are often associated with increased intracranial pressure and cerebral edema, proper management of this can reduce tissue damage of the brain and improve brain perfusion. the use of acetazolamide is not indicated in guidelines for the management of intracranial hypertension, which is used to a great extent for the management of idiopathic intracranial hypertension. However, it is not yet known in the management of traumatic intracranial hypertension.

Occupational Exposure to Endotoxin in PM<sub>2.5</sub>and Pre- and Post-Shift Lung Function in California Dairy Workers

Individual exposures to particulate matter and endotoxin in dairies have increased as operations have transitioned to larger herd sizes. A cross-sectional study at 13 California dairies and one non-dairy control facility was conducted to determine associations between endotoxin concentrations measured in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and respiratory function in these workers. Previous research found that dairy work was associated with acute airway obstruction in comparison to controls. While endotoxin levels in PM2.5 have been previously reported, their effects on lung function have not been studied among California dairy workers. this paper also examined correlations with PM2.5 concentration, inhalable particulate matter (IPM), and endotoxin in IPM. Personal samples collected from a total of 185 dairy workers and 45 control workers were included in the analyses. Findings showed that dairy facilities had higher (p 2.5 when compared with the control facility (3.3 EU/m3, 0.6 EU/m3, respectively). Endotoxin in PM2.5 was weakly correlated with PM2.5 concentration (r2 = 0.16, p 2 = 0.35, p t not with IPM concentration. When controlling for age, ethnicity, smoking, height and personal protective equipment use, PM2.5 endotoxin exposure was associated with lower crossshift in forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) only among taller workers (p = 0.006). this is the first study to present personal occupational exposures to endotoxin in PM2.5 measured on Californian dairies. Despite lower levels than in other industries, such as poultry farms, this study suggests that some workers may be affected, and efforts should be aimed at mitigating pollutants in order to maintain endotoxin concentrations below recommended levels.

Quality of Life in Women with Endometriosis Pelvic Pain treated with the Levonorgestrel-Releasing Intrauterine System

Objective: to evaluate the quality of life in patients with endometriosis pelvic pain before and after the application of the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS). Design: Open non-comparative study. Setting: Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital at Monterrey, Mexico. Sample: 29 women aged 18 to 40 years with pelvic pain associated with endometriosis confirmed by laparoscopy. Methods: After laparoscopy but before LNG-IUS insertion (basal visit) and 6 months afterwards, modified Endometriosis Health Profile (EHP-30) was applied. Main outcomes measures: Size of change of questionnaire scores, need of additional analgesic therapy and adverse effects. Statistical Analysis: Differences in the questionnaire scores before and after intervention were analyzed by Student t-test. Results: Final analysis set included 29 women aged 31.7 ± 4.7 years years. the ASRM surgical staging of endometriosis was mild in 19.3 moderate in 13.7 and severe in 76% of the patients. the general perception of quality of life improved from 52 at baseline to 98% at six months (p ts were mild in nature, 19 patients reported no adverse events during the study (65.5%). two patients (6.9%) required the use of concomitant therapy with non-steroidal analgesics for relief of pain. Conclusion: the application of LNG-IUS in patients with pelvic pain associated with endometriosis improved significatively all aspects related with quality of life as measured with Endometriosis Health Profile (EHP-30). We concluded that LNGIUS may be an effective and convenient therapeutic alternative for the management of pain associated with endometriosis.

Role of Salmonella enterica exposure in Chilean Crohn's disease patients

AIM:to study the association between exposure toSalmonella enterica(SE)and Crohn’s disease(CD)and its clinical implications in Chilean ***:Ninety-four unrelated Chilean CD patients from CAREI(Active Cohort Registry of Inflammatory Bowel Disease)presenting to a single inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)unit of a University Hospital were prospectively included in this study.A complete clinical evaluation,including smoking history,was performed at the initial visit,and all the important data of clinical evolution of CD were *** samples from these CD patients and 88 healthy sex-and agematched control subjects were analyzed for exposure to SE and for their NOD2/CARD15 gene status using the presence of anti-Salmonella lipopolysaccharide antibodies[immunoglobulin-G type(IgG)]and polymerase chain reaction(PCR),*** also evaluated exposure to SE in 90 sex-and age-matched patients without CD,but with known smoking status(30 smokers,30 non-smokers,and 30 former smokers).RESULtS:CD patients comprised 54 females and 40males,aged 35.5±15.2 years at diagnosis with a mean follow-up of 9.0±6.8 *** was inflammatory in 59 patients(62.7%),stricturing in 24(25.5%)and penetrating in 15(15.5%).thirty cases(31.9%)had lesions in the ileum,29(30.8%)had ileocolonic lesions,32(34.0%)had colonic lesions and 23(24.4%)had perianal *** CD patients(17%)were exposed to SE compared to 15(17%)of 88 healthy control subjects(P=0.8).thirty-one CD patients(32.9%)were smokers,and 7(7.4%)were former smokers at *** the group exposed to SE,10 of 16 patients(62.5%)were active smokers compared to 21 of 78 patients(26.9%)in the unexposed group(P=0.01).On the other hand,10 of 31 smoking patients(32%)were exposed to SE compared to 5 of 56 nonsmoking patients(9%),and one of the seven former smokers(14%)(P=0.01).In the group of 90 patients without CD,but whose smoking status was known,there was no differ-ence in exposure to SE[3 of 30 smokers(10%),5 of30 non-s
