The Role of Humic Acid and Proline on Growth, Chemical Constituents and Yield Quantity and Quality of Three Flax Cultivars Grown under Saline Soil Conditions

In order to mitigate the salinity effects on flax grown on moderate saline sandy soil (3275 - 3430 ppm) and irrigated with moderate saline water (2300 - 2460 ppm) field experiments were carried out at the experimental Station of the Faculty of Agriculture, Wadi El-Natrun district El-Behera Governorate—Egypt, during two successive winter seasons of 2012/2013 and 2013/2014. Three flax varieties (Opal, Giza-8 and Mayic) were grown and treated with some chemical additives humic acid (50 kg/fed) and/or foliar applied proline (Control, 50 and 100 mg/L). The results showed the positive responses of Giza-8 variety to the combined application of humic acid and proline and mitigated the salinity effects of soil and irrigation water and reflected on most of the studied characters. Such results indicate the potentiality of mitigation the hazardous effect of salinity with these chemical additives. The data indicated that the highest seed yield, straw yield and oil yield were obtained at humic acid (50 kg/fed) with foliar treatment of proline at rate of (100 mg/L). The interaction of proline at (100 mg/L) with humic acid at rate of (50 kg/fed) improved plant fresh and dry weight in all flax cultivars under salinity conditions. Fresh weight increased by 66.6%, 48.7% and 65.5% over controls for Opal, Giza-8 and Mayic varieties, respectively. The interaction of proline at (100 mg/L) with humic acid at rate of (50 kg/fed) with Giza-8 variety gave the highest values of seed yield, straw yield and oil yield.

Ethnic Comparison of Inner and Outer Intercanthal Distance among Adult Sudanese

Background: Anthropometric pattern of the inner and outer intercanthal distance varies with no universal normative values. This study was conducted on three Sudanese ethnic groups, namely blacks, Arabs, and Hamites to identify normative values and the ethnic and gender influence in the anthropometric pattern of the inner and outer intercanthal distance. Methods: This is a cross sectional study among Sudanese subjects selected randomly from Khartoum Teaching Dental Hospital and Port Sudan Dental Hospital, using a stratified sampling technique. The inner intercanthal distance (IICD) and outer intercanthal distance (OICD) were measured directly using a digital caliber. Result: A total of 280 subjects included with a mean age of 35.76 ± 12.23 years, 122 males and 158 females. The distribution of groups was as follow: 92 (33%) Arabs, 62 (22%) blacks, and 126 (45%) Hamites. The mean IICD of males and females are 31.50 mm ± 2.89 and 32.22 mm ± 3.17, respectively. The mean OICD are 95.09 mm ± 5.78 and 93.95 mm ± 4.27 for males and females, respectively, with a statistically significant relationship. Regarding the ethnic group differences, the mean of IICD was wider among the blacks, followed by the Arabs and Hamites. However, the mean of OICD was wider among the Hamites, followed by the blacks and the Arabs. Conclusion: Intercanthal distance differs across ethnic groups. A Comparative Analysis for a Novel Irrigation Method: Partial Rootzone Drying

Partial Rootzone Drying (PRD) is an irrigation technique which offers a means of modifying the growth and development of crops through relatively simple changes to the method of water delivery. The technique causes the stimulation of physiological responses which are normally associated with water stress and this results in a significant reduction in water use through the production of chemical signals in drying roots. Partial drying of one half of the roots of plants grown with two root systems is rapidly translated into a reduction in transpiration and assimilation of all the crop leaves. The aim of this research is to examine and simulate the novel irrigation method (PRD), which would stimulate the endogenous stress response mechanisms of Conocarpus erectus trees in the pilot area of the Arabian Gulf University in Bahrain and wheat and maize crops in the Mashtul Pilot Area (MPA), Egypt using Saltmed model so that vigor is reduced and the efficiency of water use is enhanced. This is to be achieved by the manipulation of the hydration status of parts of a crop’s roots that could be used to control vegetative vigor without detrimental effects on canopy water relations. The PRD technique is researched for wheat as a winter crop and maize as a summer crop in Egypt. The technique causes the stimulation of physiological responses which are normally associated with water stress and this results in a significant reduction in water use through the production of chemical signals in drying roots. The results confirmed an increase in irrigation water use efficiency using PRD comparing with conventional flood irrigation. The research highly recommends applying the PRD method in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and in new reclaimed areas in Egypt to save water and improve crop quality.

Hydro Matrix Power Wheels Generate More than 5 GW/h from Main Branch Canals (River Nile) in Egypt

In this paper, a new hydromatrix power wheels generation unit is presented. This presented hydromatrix power unit is aimed to convert the water movement in the main river branches into electrical power. It is found that the generated power based on the proposed hydromatrix power can be generated about 5 GW/h in Egypt. The proposed hydromatrix power unit based on the under shot water wheel type and the generated electrical power using this proposed unit is calculated at head;difference equal to 1 meter is presented.

This paper delivers on the biodegradation kinetics of an integrated fixed film activated sludge(IFAS) reactor using experimental data and a mathematical model under two operational conditions,employing different quantities of granular activated carbon(GAC) as a biological growth support medium.A mathematical model based on Monod kinetics was validated using the experimental data by employing estimated kinetic parameters and values from the literature for other parameters of the *** mathematical model was found to describe the process well at a steady state and to a lesser extent,at transient state *** chemostat conditions,the process was found to be mainly limited by the high microorganisms decay rate,specific utilization rate and limitation imposed by the substrate availability.

A 2.4 GHz Switched Beam Antenna for Indoor Applications Using Angle of Arrival Estimation

This study introduces a new design of planar antenna array for ISM band applications at 2.4 GHz. This prototype is switched beam antenna, namely planar antenna with four meandered slotted triangular elements (PAFMSTE), which is proposed for wireless indoor applications. The Base Station (BS) equipped with this planar antenna is preferred to be at the center position on the room ceiling to cover all sectors of the room. It is designed to use four directional triangular elements arranged to form a square planar antenna array. The PAFMSTE is used to obtain optimal directivity in four directions in azimuth plane with 3 dB beamwidth of 90°at a specific orientation of 30°in elevation plane. Switched parasitic technique is used to enable PAFMSTE to steer a directional beam through four locations by using four PIN diodes switches. The High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) is used as an efficient simulation tool to optimize the performance of the PAFMSTE antenna. The fabrication and measurements of the PAFMSTE antenna are introduced. The proposed antenna enable radio positioning via Angle of Arrival (AOA) information collected from nearby devices. Then, the Cramér-Rao Bound (CRB) is presented for AOA estimation using identically and equally spaced antenna elements. The CRB depends on the directivity, where the maximum values of CRB are 1.35 × 10-3 and 8 × 10-3 at HPBW of 60° and 90°, respectively.

Background: Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disease worldwide, it causes chronic hepatitis, which leads to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. We aimed to assess the value of liver fatty acid binding protein (L-FABP) in the diagnosis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in comparison to ultrasonography. Patients and Methods: Ninty subjects were enrolled in this study who attended the Hepatology, Gastroenterology and Internal medicine clinics in Benha University Hospitals between January 2017 and January 2018 and divided into group I included 70 consecutive patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease who were diagnosed by ultrasound with or without elevated liver enzymes and group II included 20 healthy control subjects without NAFLD (by ultrasound) with normal liver enzymes. Serum levels of L-FABP were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: NAFLD patients were slightly older than healthy subjects as mean age in group I was (37.74 ± 11.7) while in group II was (36.5 ± 11.31). There was a slight increase in NAFLD in males, there was a high prevalence of NAFLD in the urban population. L-FABP levels in NAFLD patients were higher than in the control group (levels were 188.6 ± 34.94 and 137.7 ± 13.05 ng/l respectively). A strong correlation was found between L-FABP and ALT, AST, BMI and glucose levels. Analysis of ROC curve revealed that at a level 151.1 ng/sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and accuracy were 83.3%, 71.8%, 31.3%, 96.6% and 73.3% respectively with AUC 0.839 and at a level 189.5 ng/sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and accuracy were 90%, 90%, 95.4%, 95.4%, 88.9% with AUC was 0.950. Conclusion: Serum L-FABP could be used as a new diagnostic biomarker for detecting NAFLD.

Presentation and Management of Wilm’s Tumour in Sudan (Three Centre Experience from 2014-2016)

Background: Wilm’s tumour is a cancer of the kidneys that typically occurs in children younger than fifteen years of age and rarely in adults. With an early diagnosis and proper management of Wilm’s tumour by Multi-modal approach, excellent outcome can be obtained. This study was designed to reflect the clinical presentations and focus on different management modalities with an outcome of Wilm’s tumour in Sudan. Patients and methods: This descriptive, retro-prospective analytic study included all patients of Wilm’s tumour at Soba University Hospital, Gezira national paediatric surgery centre and Khartoum teaching Hospital from January 2014 to January 2016. Results: Thirty patients (pts) were included. Females were predominant in a ratio of 3: 1 to males. The mean age was 3.0 - 5.9 years. Those who came from central and western of Sudan were more affected. Most patients presented with abdominal mass 28 pts (93.3%), followed by abdominal distension in 16 pts (53.3%), while the less frequent presentation was haematuria seen only in 2 pts (6.7%). The multimodal approach: surgery and chemotherapy used in 21 pts (70%) and single modality was used in nine patients: surgery alone in 6 pts (20%), or chemotherapy alone in 3 pts (10%). The patients discharged uneventfully 23 pts (76%). Morbidity was seen in two patients. Deaths were occurred in five patients in the study (16.7%). Conclusion: The finding of this study reflected that Wilm’s tumour has an excellent outcome when patient was managed by multimodal approach.

Cytoprotectant and Anti-Oxidant Effects of Olive Oil on Cadmium Induced Nephrotoxicity in Mice

Background: Cadmium is a heavy metal having toxic effects on most organ systems of the body. Objectives: We aim to investigate the postulated protective properties of olive oil in Cadmium-induced renal toxicity in mice by utilizing standard biomarkers of renal toxicity, oxidative stress and histopathological characterization. Materials and Methods: Forty mice were randomly divided into four groups of 10 mice each. Group 1 served as control group, group 2 was given Extra-virgin olive oil orally, group 3 was given Cadmium chloride and group 4 was given Cadmium chloride with Extra-virgin olive oil. At the end of the experimental period, biochemical analysis histopathology of kidney was done. Results: The present study depicted that blood urea, serum creatinine and the antioxidant markers (Superoxide dismutase, Glutathione peroxidase and Catalase) levels were significantly increased in group 3 compared to group 1 and 2. After administration of Extra-virgin olive oil with Cadmium in group 4, the levels of those markers significantly improved. Histopathology of the renal tissue showed severe damage of glomeruli, severely congested blood vessels and marked dilatation of Bowman’s capsule in group 3 with improvements of these changes in group 4. Conclusion: This study suggests that Extra-virgin olive oil can be used as a cost effective safe anti-oxidative agent in the prevention of Cadmium toxicity.
