Combine Harvester: Small Machine Solves Big Rice Harvesting Problem of Bangladesh

Bangladesh, a country with 87% of rural households that depend on agriculture and rice dominated diets (70%), engages the country’s food security. Therefore, there is strong advocacy for a mechanized paddy harvesting system for food security in South Asia, mainly Bangladesh. Some harvesting machinery is available;however, the precise roles of a combine harvester during this process are little. This study attempts to understand the consequences of combining harvesters for paddy harvesting and compare them with hand harvesting. For comparison of field performance of combine harvester with traditional harvesting, the experiment was conducted at Gazipur District, Bangladesh, in 2016. Results showed that the labor required for harvesting unit area 283, 15 and 9.87 man-h∙ha−1 for T1 (Sickle + Head carry + Beating + Kula), T2 (Reaper + Trolley carry + Close drum thresher + winnower), T3 (Combine harvester) system, respectively. Likewise, the harvesting costs were 1.84 (T2) and 2.5 (T1) times higher than the combine harvester (T3). Also, the postharvest loss can be saved 1.84%, to use combine harvester over manual harvesting of paddy. The above result revealed that the semi-mechanized and mechanized harvesting system is a time, labor and cost-saving system;however, the manual reaping system is concerned with more postharvest losses (3.09%). This study highlights the importance of combine harvester;however, further research is required in other places with large and mini-combine harvesters under diverse cropping areas and to test a combine harvester’s detailed potentiality.

The study of various oxidation states of chromium with Sargassum sp. is of particular interest since hexavalent chromium is reduced to trivalent chromium in an aqueous solution. In this study, a systematic density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to study the interactions of transition metal chromium ion with different oxidation states and spin states with the Sargassum sp. decorated with carboxylate (acetate) at the wB97XD/6-311++ G(d,p) level of theory. The structures and binding energies of chromium metal-carboxylate complexes at various oxidation states and spin states in gas phase were examined. The coordination strength of Cr(VI) with the acetate ligand was predominantly the strongest compared to the other oxidation states. Objective:To assess the effects of a widely used antibiotic,oxytetracycline(OTC)on the bacterial microflora in two catfish species under artificial culture conditions in the ***:The experiment was conducted in the Faculty of Fisheries,Bangladesh Agricultural University,*** fish were reared in six aquaria(size 37 cm×30 cm×60 cm)where three aquaria served as replicates of the antibiotic treatment groups and the remaining three aquaria served as an untreated control *** aquarium was stocked with 25 fish on an average body weight 15 *** was administered to the fish in the treatment groups at the rate of 2 g/kg in-feed twice daily upto ad libitum,whereas fish in the untreated control groups were given the same feed without antibiotics for 20 *** the experiment,bacterial loads were estimated as colony forming unit(CFU/g)by every alternate day in the aquarium water,gills,skin and intestine of ***:The administration of OTC in feed resulted in gradual decrease of bacterial loads in the gills,intestine and skin of the two catfish species *** contrast,the bacterial loads remain unchanged or slightly increased in the control groups not fed with *** quality parameters such as dissolved oxygen,pH and total hardness were found to be within suitable range in the test aquaria but not in control aquarium throughout the experimental ***:The results of this experiment showed that in-feed antibiotic OTC for a period of 20d reduced the bacterial loads in the gills,intestines and skin of treated fish.

Barapukuria Coal Mine situated in the district Dinajpur. Bangladesh is playing an important role in the economy of this country by the mining of top quality coal. With coal mining, mine waste is also generated called coal spoil. Coal spoil can impose environmental threat if not treated carefully. In contrast, it can also be converted to value added product. In the present work, coal spoils collected from Barapukuria coal mine drainage water were investigated to determine the quality of the samples by physico-chemical analysis (proximate and ultimate analysis) as well as by heating value determination. 50% of carbon was detected in the samples after elemental analysis, with sulfur content less than 0.4%. Calorific value around 9300 btu/lb was obtained for the coal spoil. Moreover, moisture content, ash, volatile matter content and fixed carbon also provided fruitful information regarding the quality and economic prospect of the samples in comparison to the quality of Barapukuria coal.

Management of Sepsis in Intensive Care Units in Rajshahi Medical College, Bangladesh

Background: Sepsis was a life-threatening situation affecting roughly 27 million individuals globally every year. Devoid of proper management, sepsis could develop to austere sepsis and septic shock that reason certain eight million expiries every year. Initial identification and analysis of contaminations and quick introductions of antimicrobial management had long been predictable as essential principles of treatment. Methods: All patients were evaluated thoroughly by history, clinical and laboratory findings. Serum lactate levels were collected at 0 hr and 24 hrs of the total admission in the ICU. Blood culture and sensitivity was performed prior to antibiotic administration in this study. Results: In this research, total sample was 1367 patients. Among these sepsis patients were 305 (nearly 22%). These 305 studied sepsis cases, majority 128 (42%) of the patients were within the age group of 41 - 65 years, followed by 18 - 30 years consisting of 116 (38%) and the least number of sepsis patients were in the age group of >65 years (20%). This study found that 129 (42.3%) out of 305 blood samples screened from assumed sepsis infection were affirmative for the presence of sepsis causing pathogens. Among the 129 culture positive samples, majority of the isolated micro-organisms were gram negative bacteria 58% (75), followed by gram positive bacteria 38% (49), and 3.8% (5) were the fungi Candida albicans. Conclusion: At present, mortality & morbidity of sepsis subject was too big due to late identification, wrong & inadequate management of sepsis in the ward and also in the intensive care unit of Bangladesh.

Cholera is a severe diarrheal disease which is usually caused by toxigenic strain of Vibrio cholerae O1 and O139. Cholera is still one of the major health concerns in developing countries like Bangladesh due to poor sanitation and unavailability of safe drinking water. This experiment was confronted to identify V. cholerae O1 from stool samples as well as to determine the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of the isolated strains. A total of 140 stool samples from people infected with diarrheal disease were collected from July 2016 to December 2016. Among all, 58 samples were found positive for V. cholerae which were further subjected to sero-grouping by specific anti-sera and antimicrobial sus-ceptibility test by Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method. The zones of inhibition were measured and interpreted by following the recommendations of the criteria of Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). It was found that 43 (74.1%) isolates of V. cholerae were O1 serogroup of Ogawa serotype and the rest 15 (25.9%) were O1 serogroup of Inaba serotype. People aged between 41 - 50 were most susceptible to V. cholerae O1 having about 39.7% of positive cases. The isolates were highly susceptible to Ciprofloxacin and Gentamicin with 100% susceptibility whereas 100% resistant was found towards Nalidixic acid. Though most of the isolates in our study were susceptible against tested antibiotics, the continuous surveillance is required to see the changing pattern of serogroups or serotypes and antimicrobial profile in this region.

Physicochemical properties and metal contents of five dye-based textile effluents collected in summer and winter season, 2016 from Savar, Dhaka, Bangladesh were within the recommended acceptable limit. The average value of all physicochemical parameters was found high in summer season except turbidity. A total of 94 heavy metal resistant bacteria (46 gram positive & 48 gram negative) were isolated from textile effluent samples and among them 17 isolates were multi metal resistant. Highest tolerance level of the isolates was shown at 10 mM concentration against Pb. All the heavy metal resistant bacterial isolates were presumably grouped into 14 genera according to morphological and biochemical assay. Three isolates designated WFB3c (65.41%), WFB4g (62%) and SFB5c (60.07%) were found to potentially degrade dye as well as tolerate heavy metals. The case studies are about atypical bilateral, postoperative Cystoid Macular Edema (CME) in two patients who underwent bilateral uncomplicated pha- coemulsification surgery with a trifocal Intraocular Lens (IOL). In postoperative follow-up, both the cases presented with complaints of bilateral blurring of vision. Irvine-Gass syndrome has been diagnosed after evaluation of the retina by fundoscopy and OCT macula. Posterior subtenon steroid injection has been prescribed and given. Regular OCT examinations indicated substantial ede- ma improvement. Subsequent improvement in visual acuity was also noted in both cases. Cystoid macular edema can happen in any case irrespective of the quality of IOL. The visual outcome is satisfactorily responsive towards steroid medication.
