Development and Evaluation of Species-Specific Biomass Models for Most Common Timber and Fuelwood Species of Bangladesh

Allometric biomass models are efficient tools to estimate biomass of trees and forest stands in a non-destructive way. Development of species-specific allometric biomass models requires extensive fieldwork and time. Our study aimed to generate species-specific allometric biomass models for the most common fuelwood and timber species of Bangladesh. We also wanted to evaluate the performances of our models relative to the performances of regional and commonly used pan-tropical biomass models. We used semi-destructive method that incorporates tree-level volume, species-specific biomass expansion factor (BEF), and wood density. We considered four base models, 1) Ln (biomass) = a + bLn (D);2) Ln (biomass) = a + bLn (H);3) Ln (Biomass) = a + bLn (D^2H);4) Ln (Biomass) = a + bLn (D) + cLn (H) to develop species-specific best-fitted models for Total Above-Ground Biomass (TAGB) and stem biomass. The best-fitted model for each species was selected by the lowest value of Akaike Information Criterion (AIC), Residual Standard Error (RSE) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). The derived best-fitted models were then evaluated with respect to regional and pan-tropical models using a separate set of observed data. This evaluation was conducted by computing ME (Model Efficiency) and MPE (Model Prediction Error). The best-fitted allometric biomass models have shown higher model efficiency (0.85 to 0.99 at scale 1) and the lowest model prediction error (-8.94% to 5.27%) compared to the regional and pan-tropical models. All the examined regional and pan-tropical biomass models showed different magnitude of ME and MPE. Some models showed higher level (>0.90 at scale 1) of ME compared to the best-fitted specific species biomass model.

Design of a Peer-to-Peer Energy Trading Platform Using Multilayered Semi-Permissioned Blockchain

A secured and scalable Peer-to-Peer (P2P) energy trading platform can facilitate the integration of renewable energy and thus contribute to building sustainable energy infrastructure. The decentralized architecture of blockchain makes it a befitting candidate to actualize an efficient P2P energy trading market. However, for a sustainable and dynamic blockchain-based P2P energy trading platform, few critical aspects such as security, privacy and scalability need to be addressed with high priority. This paper proposes a blockchain-based solution for energy trading among the consumers which ensures the systems’ security, protects users’ privacy, and improves the overall scalability. More specifically, we develop a multilayered semi-permissioned blockchain-based platform to facilitate energy transactions. The practical byzantine fault tolerant algorithm is employed as the underlying consensus for verification and validation of transactions which ensures the system’s tolerance against internal error and malicious attacks. Additionally, we introduce the idea of quality of transaction (QoT)—a reward system for the participants of the network that eventually helps determine the participant’s eligibility for future transactions. The resiliency of the framework against the transaction malleability attack is demonstrated with two uses cases. Finally, a qualitative analysis is presented to indicate the system’s usefulness in improving the overall security, privacy, and scalability of the network.

The development of scientific inquiry and research has yielded numerous benefits in the realm of intelligent traffic control systems, particularly in the realm of automatic license plate recognition for vehicles. The design of license plate recognition algorithms has undergone digitalization through the utilization of neural networks. In contemporary times, there is a growing demand for vehicle surveillance due to the need for efficient vehicle processing and traffic management. The design, development, and implementation of a license plate recognition system hold significant social, economic, and academic importance. The study aims to present contemporary methodologies and empirical findings pertaining to automated license plate recognition. The primary focus of the automatic license plate recognition algorithm was on image extraction, character segmentation, and recognition. The task of character segmentation has been identified as the most challenging function based on my observations. The license plate recognition project that we designed demonstrated the effectiveness of this method across various observed conditions. Particularly in low-light environments, such as during periods of limited illumination or inclement weather characterized by precipitation. The method has been subjected to testing using a sample size of fifty images, resulting in a 100% accuracy rate. The findings of this study demonstrate the project’s ability to effectively determine the optimal outcomes of simulations.

为改善涤纶网络丝仿麻织物的摩擦性能,分析了纤维、纱线、织物组织结构等因素对涤纶网络丝仿麻织物起毛起球性能、耐磨性能的影响,研究并制定了提高涤纶网络丝仿麻织物摩擦性能的树脂整理工艺。对树脂整理剂浓度、处理液温度、焙烘温度、焙烘时间、柔软剂浓度等工艺参数进行优化。结果表明:涤纶网络丝仿麻织物最佳整理工艺为树脂整理剂质量浓度50g/L,处理液温度40℃,焙烘温度100℃,焙烘时间4min,柔软剂质量浓度3g/L;经最佳工艺整理后的织物在40000次摩擦后的质量损失率由未整理时的12.13%下降到5.34%,织物起毛起球等级由未整理时的1级提升到3~4级,并能基本保持织物原有的手感。

Study of Structural and Morphological Properties of Vacuum Coated Copper (Cu) Metal Thin Film

This study presented a technique to deposit high strength and highly conductive copper thin films on glass substrates at room temperature. In this work, Cu thin films with thicknesses ~500 nm have been deposited on glass substrate by thermal evaporation technique at room temperature. After deposition, these films have been annealed at 200°C for 10 - 40 minutes. The thickness and annealing effect on the structural and morphological properties were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) respectively. The results showed that by increasing thickness the copper films crystallinity in (111) direction had been increased. Also by varying the annealing time the significant changes were observed in the films crystallinity and surface morphology.

Background: Patients of acute leukemia require careful assessment of liver function prior to start chemotherapy to determine which drugs may be appropriate or to be modified. Post chemotherapy abnormalities of liver function tests may be due to drugs or due to disease process itself. Objective: To evaluate the status of liver function in acute leukemia patients before and after induction chemotherapy. Methodology: This was a prospective cross-sectional study conducted in the Department of Biochemistry, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka, Bangladesh from January 2017 to December 2017 on fifty (50) newly diagnosed patients of acute leukemia who fulfilled the selection criteria. Blood samples for serum total bilirubin, alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) were collected before chemotherapy (Day 1) and after induction chemotherapy on 14th day and 30th day. Serum ALT and AST were measured by kinetic method and serum total bilirubin was measured by DMSO method. Data were analyzed and compared by statistical tests. Result: In this study, the mean level of serum total bilirubin before chemotherapy at day 1 was 0.89 ± 0.64 mg/dl. It was significantly (p Conclusion: It is concluded that serum total bilirubin, ALT and AST increase in response to chemotherapeutic drugs during treatment of acute leukemia.

Predictors of Death in Under-Five Children with Sepsis Attending an Urban Diarrheal Treatment Centre in Bangladesh

SETTING: Special Care Ward (SCW) of the Dhaka Hospital of icddr,b, Bangladesh. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical and laboratory predictors of death in under-five children with clinically defined sepsis presenting with diarrhea. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled all the diarrheal children (n = 151) aged 0 to 59 months with clinical sepsis admitted in the SCW during September’2007 through December’2007. Comparison was made between deaths (n = 23) and survivors (n = 128). Sepsis is defined as presence of inflammation [abnormal WBC count (>11 × 109/L or, 9/L or, band and neutrophil ratio ≤0.10] plus presence or presumed presence of infection with thermo-instability [hypo (≤35.0℃) or hyperthermia (≥38.5℃)], tachycardia, tachypnea, and/or the indications of altered organ function (altered mental status and bounding pulse) in the absence of clinical dehydration or after correction of dehydration. RESULTS: The median (inter-quartile range) age (months) of the children who survived and died was comparable [4.0 (2.0, 12.0) vs. 1.5 (0.8, 10.0);p = 0.703]. In the logistic regression analysis, after adjusting for potential confounders, such as abnormal WBC count, use of intravenous fluid, patient with fatal outcome more often presented with hypernatremia (odds ratio = 16.48, 95% confidence interval = 2.21 -?123.12;p = 0.006), lobar consolidation (odds ratio = 19.9, 95% confidence interval = 2.99 - 132.80;p = 0.002), hypoxemia (odds ratio = 14.78, 95% confidence interval = 1.38 157.90;p = 0.026) and severe under-nutrition (odds ratio = 7.57, 95% confidence interval = 1.24 - 46.11;p = 0.028). CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that children under-five with clinical sepsis who present with lobar pneumonia, hypoxaemia, severe acute malnutrition and hyperntaemia are at higher risk of death and identification of these simple factors may help clinicians to take prompt initiative for the aggressive management of such children especially in a resource-limited setting like Bangladesh.
