Mechanical and thermodynamical stability of BiVO4 polymorphs using first-principles study

First principles calculations of structural, electronic, mechanical, and thermodynamic properties of different poly- morphs of BiVO4 are performed using Bender-type plane/wave ultrasoft pseudopotentials within the generalized gradient approximation （GGA） in the flame of density functional theory （DFT）. The calculated structural and electronic properties are consistent with the previous theoretical and experimental results. The electronic structures reveal that m-BiVO4, op- BiVO4, and st-BiVO4 have indirect band gaps, on the other hand, zt-BiVO4 has a direct band gap. From the DOS and Mulliken＇s charge analysis, it is observed that only m-BiVO4 has 6s2 Bi lone pair. Bond population analysis indicates that st-BiVO4 shows a more ionic nature and a similar result is obtained from the elastic properties. From the elastic prop- erties, it is observed that st-BiVO4 is more mechanically stable than the others, st-BiVO4 is more ductile and useful for high electro-optical and electro-mechanical coupling devices. Our calculated thermodynamic properties confirm the similar characteristics found from electronic and elastic properties, m-BiVO4 is useful as photocatalysts, solid state electrolyte, and electrode and other polymorphs are applicable in electronic device fabrications.

Bacterial community structure and diversity of two closely located stations are usually considered similar which can be verified by more intensive investigations using relatively large amount of datasets from the next generation sequencer. This study was conducted to assess the bacterial community structure and diversity between two closely located coastal stations, the port side and the sea side of the Oarai, Ibaraki, Japan from March 2013 to July 2014 using 454 GS Junior sequencer. Two stations underwent similar changes in physicochemical properties but the community structure and diversity was different. The Proteobacteria (the class Alphaproteobacteria, followed by the Gammaproteobacteria) and the Bacteroidetes (the class Flavobacteriia) were two abundant phyla in both the stations. But, the Flavobacteriia was more abundant in the port side, contributed about 26% to 48%, compared to the sea side (about 12% to 39%). Conversely, the relative abundance of the Gammaproteobacteria was higher on the sea side, about 10% to 17%, compared to the port side (about 4% to 12%). Among others, the phyla Cyanobacteria, Deferribacteres, Verrucomicrobia and the class Betaproteobacteria were also relatively abundant at the sea side. Because of their dominancy, the class Flavobacteriia and Alphaproteobacteria were further analysed at a lower phylogenetic level and marked differences were observed between the stations. Bacterial biodiversity in terms of the species richness (Chao index) and evenness (inverse Simpson) indicated higher patterns of diversity in the sea side area compared to the port side. Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling fitting with the environmental features (metamd.), redundancy analysis (RDA) and Bray-Curtis clustering analysis also showed marked differences in bacterial community structure and diversity between the stations. Background: Chronic Heart Failure is a complex clinical conditions affecting patients’ Quality of Life (QoL) globally. Objective: The aim of the study was to identify the factors influencing the quality of life of the chronic heart failure patients. Methods: A descriptive exploratory study was carried out by face-to-face interview with structured standard questionnaire. One hundred and forty two hospitalized chronic heart failure patients were conveniently recruited from National Institute of Cardiovascular Disease and Hospital, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Data were collected from January to February, 2019. Quality of life related factors were identified using Patients’ General Characteristics Questionnaire. QOL of chronic heart failure patients was measured by the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ) and the World Health Organization’s Quality of Life Instrument-Short Version (WHOQOL-BREF). Descriptive statistic was used to describe the samples’ characteristics. Association between Socio-demographic characteristics and QOL of chronic heart failure patients was measured using t-test and one way of ANOVA. Relationship between continuous variables was measured by Pearson correlation test. Results: Findings reveal that mean of the total chronic heart failure related quality of life was 94.16 (SD = 3.20) out of maximum of 105. This high score indicates worsen chronic heart failure patients’ quality of life. The mean score of general quality of life of chronic heart failure patients was calculated as 41.05 (SD = 5.109) out of maximum of 130 which indicates low level of general quality of life of chronic heart failure patients. There is a significant positive correlation found between disease related quality of life and general quality of life of chronic heart failure patients. Total suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the urban atmosphere of Dhaka city was collected using a high volume sampling technique for a period of one month (August 2017-September 2017). Chemical characterization of particulate matter (PM) was investigated, and characterized concerning the size distribution, morphological features such as count, total area, average size, perimeter, circularity, aspect ratio (AR), roundness;equivalent spherical diameter (ESD), surface area and volume of PM. The results of elemental analysis showed that the presence of heavy metal in PM was ten to hundred times higher than the standard value prescribed by WHO and USEPA. Several morphological analysis indicated that particles varying in shape from nearly spherical to various irregular shape, had higher surface energy, higher content of Cl and S bearing particles and had a large surface area which can cause greater damage to lungs. The presence of various organic compounds containing functional groups like alcohols, ketones aldehydes, carboxylic acids as well as unsaturated and saturated carbon bonds was observed by FT-IR analysis. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used to characterize the morphology of the PM. Agglomerates and shoots type particles were mostly seen in SPM.

Influence of Bleaching Powder on the Quality of Giant Freshwater Prawn (<i>Macrobrachium rosenbergii</i>)

Calcium hypochlorite commercially known as bleaching powder is used as a bleaching agent in shrimp processing industries in many countries and known to effect biochemical alteration in shrimp muscle. Studies were, therefore, undertaken to determine their effect in different concentrations viz., 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 ppm with different time intervals on the quality of head-on, headless shell-on and peeled giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) by determining biochemical and organoleptic aspects. Myofibrillar protein solubility of fresh head-on, headless shell-on and peeled samples were 90.5%, 90% and 88%, respectively indicating a gradual decrease in protein solubility with increasing concentration of bleaching powder. Decrease in protein solubility was also higher in samples kept at longer duration in different concentration of bleaching powder. At a given concentration of 50 ppm for 30 min treatment, the loss of myofibrillar protein was higher (26.14%) in peeled samples than those of head-on and headless shell-on samples (20.44% and 21.11%). Shelf life of bleaching powder treated prawn samples was found to be reduced to 4 - 5 days in iced condition compared to 6 - 7 days for control samples. Peeled samples were also found to be more susceptible to bleaching powder than that of head-on and headless shell-on samples.

This paper aims to develop a new microemul- sions system comprising diesel and palm oil methyl ester （PME） that have the potential to be used as alternative fuels for diesel engines. The water-in-diesel-biodiesel micro- emulsions were prepared by applying PME mixed with diesel, non-ionic surfactants, co-surfaetants and water to make the water-in-oil （W/O） microemulsion system. This microemulsified fuel was achieved through low-energy microemulsification by using the constant composition method. The diesel used was mixed with four different concentrations of PME, i.e., 10% （w/w）（B10）, 20% （w/w）（B20）, 30% （w/w）（B30） and neat diesel （B0）. The amount of water was fixed at 20% （w/w）. The phase behavior of the water/mixed non-ionic surfactant/diesel-PME system were studied by constructing pseudoternary phase diagrams with the goal of formulating optimized systems. The results showed that the microemulsions were formed and stabilized with a mixture of non-ionic surfactants at a weight ratio of 80：20 at 20% （w/w）, and with mixed co-surfactants at a weight ratio of 25：75, 20：80 and 10：90 for B0, B10, B20 and B30 respectively. The particle size, kinematic viscosity at 40℃, refractive index, density, heating value, cloud point, pour pointand flash point of the selected water-in-diesel microemulsion were 19.40 nm （polydispersity of 0.012）, 12.86mm^2/s, 1.435, 0.8913g/mL, 31.87MJ/kg, 7.15℃, 10.5℃ and 46.5℃ respectively. The corresponding values of the water-in-diesel@ME selected were 20.72nm to 23.74nm, 13.02mme/s to 13.29mmZ/s, 1.442, 0.8939g/mL to 0.8990g/mL, 31.45MJ/kg to 27.34 MJ/kg, 7.2℃ to 6.8℃, 8.5℃ to 1.5℃ and 47.5℃ to 52.0℃. These preliminary findings were further studied as potential fuels for diesel engines.

Organic amendments increase corn yield by enhancing soil resilience to climate change

A 22-year field experiment was conducted in Gongzhuling, Jilin province, China to investigate corn yield response to fertilization practice. Compared to an unfertilized control(CK), all fertilization treatments, including inorganic nitrogen fertilizer only(N), balanced inorganic fertilizers(NPK), NPK plus corn straw(SNPK), and NPK plus farmyard manure(MNPK), resulted in significant increases in corn yield. However, only organic matter amendments sustained increasing yield trends, with annual rates of 0.137 and 0.194 t ha-1for the SPNK and MNPK treatments, respectively(P < 0.05). During the 22 years, the daily mean, maximum and minimum temperatures increased by 0.50, 0.53, and 0.46 °C per decade, whereas precipitation displayed no significant change but showed large seasonal variation. According to a regression analysis, increased air temperature exerted positive effects on corn yields under the SNPK and the MNPK treatments. Under both treatments,soil organic carbon contents and soil nutrient availabilities increased significantly compared to their initial levels in 1990, whereas soil bulk density and total porosity changed slightly under the two treatments, which showed higher soil water storage than other treatments. In contrast, significant increases in soil bulk density and decreases in soil total porosity and soil nutrient availability were observed under the CK, N and NPK treatments. The contributions of soil fertility to corn yield were 28.4%, 37.9%, 38.4%, 39.0%,and 42.9% under CK, N, NPK, SNPK, and MNPK treatments, respectively, whereas climate changes accounted for 27.0%, 14.6%, 12.4%, 11.8%, and 10.8%. These results indicate that, in Northeast China, organic matter amendments can mitigate negative and exploit positive effects of climate change on crop production by enhancing soil quality.

The strict environmental regulations to overcome the drawbacks of consumption and disposal of non-renewable synthetic materials have motivated this *** physical,chemical,morphological,and thermal properties of Hylocereus Polyrhizus peel(HPP)powder obtained from the raw materials were examined in this *** physical properties analyzes of Hylocereus Polyrhizus peel(HPP)powder discovered that the moisture content,density,and water holding capacity were 9.70%,0.45 g/cm^(3),and 98.60%,***,the chemical composition analysis of Hylocereus Polyrhizus peel(HPP)powder revealed that the powder was significantly high in cellulose contents(34.35%)from other bio-peel *** crystallinity index of Hylocereus Polyrhizus peel(HPP)powder was 32.76%,according to further X-ray diffraction(XRD)*** thermal stability of Hylocereus Polyrhizus peel(HPP)powder was examined using thermogravimetric analysis(TGA)and found thermally stable at 204℃.The morphological study via scanning electron microscopy(SEM)showed a shriveled and irregular geometry *** Polyrhizus peel(HPP)powder demonstrated the peak in the range representing the major functional groups responsible for pectin’s ***,the findings revealed that the Hylocereus Polyrhizus peel(HPP)powder has the potential for the development of biodegradable and renewable materials.

Effect of Mg Addition on the Structure and Properties of Al-4.5 Cu-3.4 Fe <i>In-Situ</i>Cast Composite

Ternary Al-4.5 (wt%) Cu-3.4 (wt%) Fe in-situ composite was prepared at 1100°C by conventional casting method. However, this particular alloy contains larger needle-shaped intermetallics of Al3Fe phase. These exert adverse effect on the mechanical properties of the alloys. The larger shape and uneven orientation of the intermetallic were found to be responsible for the degradation of properties. The main purpose of this study was to modify the geometry of those needles by adding magnesium (Mg) as a fourth material. A series of alloys were prepared by adding 4, 6, 8, 10, wt% Mg in Al-4.5 (wt%) Cu-3.4 (wt%) Fe alloy. Microstructures were observed by optical microscopy. Mechanical properties like ultimate tensile strength, % elongation, % area reduction, hardness and wear test were determined. The study revealed that Mg transformed the needles of Al3Fe into globular shape which gave the alloys better mechanical properties.
