Yield of Wheat (Triticum aestivum) and Nutrient Uptake in Grain and Straw as Influenced by Some Macro (S &Mg) and Micro (B &Zn) Nutrients

A wheat variety BARI Gom 26 was cultivated with an objective of evaluating the effects of macro/secondary nutrients as S and Mg, and micro nutrients as B and Zn on yield, yield contributing traits and nutrient uptake status by the crop. The field experiment was con-ducted in the “North Eastern Barind Tract Soils” at Kushadaha, Nawabganj, Dinajpur, Bangladesh from November, 2014 to March, 2015. The surface soil was clay in texture, having pH 5.61, organic matter 1.58%, total N 0.10%, available P 7.03 ppm, exchangeable K 0.11 meq/100g, available S 2.57 ppm, exchangeable Mg 0.55 meq/100g, available Zn 1.30 ppm, available B 0.08 ppm. The experiment was designed with five treatments laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The treatments were T1: NPK (control), T2: NPK + S, T3: NPK + S + Mg, T4: NPK + S + Mg + Zn and T5: NPK + S + Mg + Zn + B. All plots of wheat received 100 kg N/ha, 30 kg P/ha and 70 kg K/ha as basal dose. The secondary and micro nutrients doses were 15 kg S/ha, 6 kg Mg/ha, 2.5 kg Zn/ha and 1.5 kg B/ha. Results revealed that the plant height, tillers/hill, 1000-grain weight, yield of grain and straw, uptake of some specific nutrients in grain and straw were signifi-cantly influenced by all the treatments, though these treatments did not show any identical effect on spike length, content of P and Mg in wheat. Significantly highest amount of 1000-grain weight, yield of grain and straw weight of wheat were obtained in applying T2 treatment that employed the addition of S with recommended dose of NPK. Significant positive effects were also observed for the rest parameters in receiving the treatments composed of secondary and micronutrients (T3, T4, and T5). The highest concentration of nutrient uptake N, P, K and S in grain and straw of wheat were also obtained due to the application of T2 treatment. Ionotropic receptors mediate olfactory learning and memory in Drosophila

Comparative study between the effect of Momordica charantia(wild and hybrid variety) on hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic activity of alloxan induced type 2 diabetic long-evans rats

This study was undertaken to evaluate the hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effect of Momordica charantia (wild and hybrid variety) powder on alloxan induced type 2 diabetic male Long-Evans rats. Oral feeding of the M. charantia powder slightly decreased serum total cholesterol, triglyceride levels and LDL-cholesterol compared with wild, hybrid and standard drug. M. charantia wild variety showed more significant (p M. charantia did not show any significant effect on HDL-cholesterol and liver glycogen. Thus, results of the study prove that the wild variety of M. charantia fruit have potent antidiabetic and antilipidemic property.

Identification of Aflatoxigenic Fungi and Detection of Their Aflatoxin in Red Chilli (Capsicum annuum) Samples Using Direct Cultural Method and HPLC

Aflatoxins are the potential lethal toxin produced by Aspergillus sp. important health hazard throughout the world. In this study, 26 Aspergillus sp. have been isolated from 50 samples of red chilli collected throughout the country. These 26 isolates were grown primarily on agar media to identify the aflatoxin producing species. It is possible to distinguish A. flavus strains from other Aspergillus sp. developing orange colour on the reverse of the plates. The Coconut Cream Agar (CCA) is used to detect aflatoxin producer strains having blue fluorescence when exposed to a UV-light. Several other media were used for morphological characteristics of Aspergillus sp. Out of 26 isolates, four isolates were confirmed as Aspergillus sp. These isolates were subjected to cross contamination with freshly ground, sterile maize and after 15 days of incubation the contaminated maize were analyzed by HPLC and found aflatoxin in each of the sample containing 186 ppb (max.). This study was conducted to assay the ability to produce aflatoxins by the Aspergillus spp. isolated from red chilli (Capsicum annuum L. Solanaceae) available throughout the country. The results found in the experiment are much more behind the acceptable limit according to some international standard. As red chilli is a widely used spice in Bangladesh, the proper controlling measures may be taken for controlling the surveillance of aflatoxinic fungi like as use of bio-pesticides, proper drying method and storage conditions.

The current study investigated the comparative oxidative damage in twomaize seedlings induced by saline,drought,and combined stress and the ameliorative role of two different doses(20 and 80μM)of 5-aminolevulinic acid(ALA)against the above-mentioned *** grown 10-day-old maize(Zea mays,*** Hybrid Maize-7(BHM-7)and BARI Hybrid Maize-9(BHM-9))seedlings were exposed to 12 dS/m of saline solution,200 mM mannitol-induced drought stress alone and their combined stress for 7 *** revealed that individual stresses retard the plant growth to some degrees,however,their combined stress has more detrimental effects,which might be correlated with lipid peroxidation(md.)-induced oxidative stress in seedlings,enhanced Na+/K+ratio,and augmented generation of superoxide(O_(2)•^(−))and hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2)).In contrast,exogenous ALA supplementation at 20μM concentration markedly recovered from chlorosis and growth inhibition,substantially scavenged reactive oxygen species(ROS)and md. by preserving ionhomeostasis and relaxing oxidative stress,also,by boosting catalase(CAT)and glutathione S-transferase(GST),and exclusively via depressing the activity of lipoxygenase(LOX)antioxidant *** the contrary,80μM ALA made things worse,nevertheless,higher activities shown by other antioxidant enzymes,like,superoxide dismutase(SOD),ascorbate peroxidase(APX),peroxidase(POD),and glutathione peroxidase(GPX),which were related to lessen the oxidative damage by highly produced O_(2)•^(−)and H_(2)O_(2) under combined ***-denaturing gel electrophoresis was done for further ***,ALA importantly increased the photosynthetic pigment contents in both genotypes irrespective of ***,GST might have assisted the plants to escape from the herbicidal effect by ***,in the combined stress condition,high ALA concentration may have some positive role to *** findings also showed that BHM-9 performed better than BHM

Haplotype Diversity at Sub1 Locus and Allelic Distribution Among Rice Varieties of Tide and Flood Prone Areas of South-East Asia

Single nucleotide polymorphisms and restriction digestion-based haplotype variations among 160 flood prone rice varieties were analyzed with enzymes Alu I and Cac8 I to generate polymorphisms at Sub1A and Sub1C loci （conferring submergence tolerance）, respectively. Haplotype associated with phenotype was used to study the haplotype variations at Sub1A and Sub1C loci and to determine their functional influence on submergence tolerance and stem elongation. Three patterns at Sub1A locus, Sub1A0 （null allele）, Sub1A1 （does not cut） and Sub1A2 （one SNP）, and four patterns at Sub1C locus, Sub1C1, Sub1C2, Sub1C3 and Sub1C4, were generated. Both tolerant Sub1A1 and intolerant Sub1A2 had the same length, but the difference was presence of a restriction site in the Sub1A2, but absent at the Sub1A1. Further, two types of polymorphism were detected at the Sub1C, one included major length polymorphisms （165, 170 and 175 bp） and the other was a single restriction site at different position. Eight haplotypes （different combinations of the two loci）, A1C1, A1C2, A1C4, A2C2, A2C4, A0C2, A0C3 and A0C4, were detected among 160 varieties. Haplotype A1C1 was comparatively more related to haplotypes A1C2 and A1C4, having the same Sub1A allele, and these haplotypes were found only in Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan and Indian varieties. Most tolerant varieties in A1C1 haplotype showed slow elongation, having tolerant specific Sub1A1 and Sub1C1 alleles. Further, the varieties Madabaru and Kottamali （A2C2） also showed moderate level of tolerance without Sub1A1 allele. These varieties were different with FR13A and also suspected to carry different novel tolerant genes at other loci. These materials could be used for hybridization with Sub1 varieties for pyramiding additional tolerant specific alleles into a single genotype for improving submergence tolerance in rice.

Regional Variation of Temperature and Rainfall in Bangladesh: Estimation of Trend

This study mainly focuses on exploring the regional variation of the changing patterns of temperature and rainfall in Bangladesh. The analysis is based on the temperature and rainfall variation in Bangladesh over five regions as Dhaka, Cox’s Bazar, Rajshahi, Bogra and Sylhet. The duration of the study period was chosen as 1953-2012 for Dhaka, 1948-2012 for Cox’s Bazar, 1972-2012 for Rajshahi, 1958-2012 for Bogra and 1957-2012 for Sylhet. The findings of the non-parametric Mann-Kendal test reveals that significant increase of maximum temperature has been found in Cox’s Bazar and Sylhet. Significant decrease of maximum temperature has been found in Dhaka and Bogra. Significant increase of minimum temperature has been found in Dhaka and Cox’s Bazar whereas significant decrease has been found in Rajshahi. Significant decrease of rainfall has been found in Rajshahi among the study region. The maximum temperature increases significantly by 0.021 degree Celsius per year in Cox’s Bazar and Sylhet. In case of minimum temperature highest increase is found in Dhaka by 0.049 degree Celsius followed by Cox’s Bazar (0.038 degree Celsius per year) whereas significant decrease has been found in Rajshahi by 0.047 degree Celsius per year.

Numerical Study and Optimization of CZTS-Based Thin-Film Solar Cell Structure with Different Novel Buffer-Layer Materials Using SCAPS-1D Software

This study explored the performances of CZTS-based thin-film solar cell with three novel buffer layer materials ZnS, CdS, and CdZnS, as well as with variation in thickness of buffer and absorber-layer, doping concentrations of absorber-layer material and operating temperature. Our aims focused to identify the most optimal thin-film solar cell structure that offers high efficiency and lower toxicity which are desirable for sustainable and eco-friendly energy sources globally. SCAPS-1D, widely used software for modeling and simulating solar cells, has been used and solar cell fundamental performance parameters such as open-circuited voltage (), short-circuited current density (), fill-factor() and efficiency() have been optimized in this study. Based on our simulation results, it was found that CZTS solar cell with Cd0.4Zn0.6S as buffer-layer offers the most optimal combination of high efficiency and lower toxicity in comparison to other structure investigated in our study. Although the efficiency of Cd0.4Zn0.6S, ZnS and CdS are comparable, Cd0.4Zn0.6S is preferable to use as buffer-layer for its non-toxic property. In addition, evaluation of performance as a function of buffer-layer thickness for Cd0.4Zn0.6S, ZnS and CdS showed that optimum buffer-layer thickness for Cd0.4Zn0.6S was in the range from 50 to 150nm while ZnS offered only 50 – 75 nm. Furthermore, the temperature dependence performance parameters evaluation revealed that it is better to operate solar cell at temperature 290K for stable operation with optimum performances. This study would provide valuable insights into design and optimization of nanotechnology-based solar energy technology for minimizing global energy crisis and developing eco-friendly energy sources sustainable and simultaneously.

Chemically and biologically activated biochars slow down urea hydrolysis and improve nitrogen use efficiency

Biochar is considered a potential technology to enhance chemical fertilizer use efficiency through intensification of the interactions between nutrients and the functional groups on biochar ***,little is known about how the application of activated biochars mixed with urea influences nitrogen(N)mineralization and crop performance in paddy ***,a sawdust-derived fresh biochar(FBC)(ca.400℃)was activated chemically with 15%hydrogen peroxide and biologically with a nutrient solution mixed with a soil inoculum to obtain a chemically activated biochar(CBC)and a biologically activated biochar(BBC),*** chemical and surface properties of FBC,CBC,and BBC were evaluated using spectroscopic methods,i.e.,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance,and potentiometric charge *** N retention capacity of biochars and their interaction with urea hydrolysis were examined in a laboratory incubation ***,a field experiment was carried out in a paddy field with the biochars unmixed or mixed with urea at a 1:1 *** results showed that negative surface functional groups and negative charges were increased on both activated biochars,especially *** activated biochars contributed to a significant reduction in urea-biochar suspension pH and increased N retention in the incubation *** the enhanced surface properties of the activated biochars,no similar increases in rice biomass and grain yield were observed for these biochars in the field ***,rice biomass,grain yield,apparent N use efficiency,and agronomic N use efficiency were significantly higher with the application of the three biochars compared to no-biochar ***,the results indicate that the application of urea mixed with biochar could enhance crop performance,especially in the case of activated biochar,which would enhance N retention in the soil,reducing N loss.

In-VitroRegeneration of Citrus sinensis(L.) Osbeck from Mature Seed Derived Embryogenic Callus on Different Solid Basal Media

In-vitro callus induction and regeneration method was developed using different plant growth regulators (PGRs), and basal media (Murashige and Skoog (MS), CHU (N6) and Gamborg (B5) media) of Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck. Observations of the effect of PGRs were carried out using different concentrations of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D),1-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and combinations of 2,4-D and NAA using different basal media. This study found Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck exhibited a high frequency of callus induction on MS medium supplemented with 3 mg/L 2,4-D and callus induction frequency was 86.7% ± 3.4% whereas N6 and B5 showed lower callus induction frequency of 83.3% ± 8.8% and 82.2% ± 1.9% respectively compared to that of MS media with supplementation of the same hormone. Among the induced calli, the morphological analysis showed only 40% - 50% was embryogenic calli. Regeneration of plantlets from calli was done using different concentrations and combinations of auxin and cytokinin. The study showed that 3 mg/L 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) supplemented medium has the maximum potential to promote regeneration of Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck from embryogenic calli with the frequency of 89.3% ± 8.8% but no regeneration occurred from the non-embryogenic calli. The regenerated plantlets were rooted on MS medium with supplementation of 5 mg/l NAA. These observations in Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck regeneration will be helpful for genetic improvement with desired traits.
