Aim:Brain abscess still poses a public health challenge in spite of the advent of modern neurosurgical techniques and ***,we present our surgical experiences and ultimate outcome in the management of brain ***:Totally,162 patients with proved brain abscess who underwent surgical treatment were included in this *** prospectively recorded data of surgical management of brain abscess and the ultimate outcome(by Glasgow outcome scale)were studied ***:Total number of cases was 162,of which 113 were acute pyogenic abscess while 49 were chronic *** the chronic abscess,29 were chronic pyogenic abscess,14 were tubercular,3 aspergillus,and 3 abscesses were in malignant brain *** acute cases,common clinical features were headache,fever,vomiting,focal deficit and *** chronic abscesses,common clinical features were mild to moderate headache and progressive focal ***-three(45.06%)patients had adjacent localized sinus,middle ear or cranial *** common predisposing factors included postneurosurgery,postpenetrating injury to brain,chronic suppurative otitis media,and congenital heart disease,infective endocarditis,sinusitis and sub optimum *** lobe involved in 30.2%cases,temporal lobe is next to *** time burr hole aspiration in 111(68.5%)cases,two or more times burr hole aspiration were done in 34(21%)*** culture was negative in 129(79.62%)*** number of death was 22(13.58%)*** resolution of abscess with complete recovery of preoperative neuro-deficit was seen in 80.86%cases and recovery with major neuro-deficit was observed in 5.55%*** is a significant association between Glasgow coma scale(GCS)on admission and mortality in brain ***:In most of the cases,pus culture did not yield growth of any causative *** was not directly related to surgical intervention,but GCS on admission has a significant

Coastal agriculture is vulnerable to climate change, thereby may affect food production systems and food security in Bangladesh. Methane (CH4) emission from coastal wetlands rice farming is a major environmental concern due to its global warming potential. Therefore, field experiments were conducted at the southern coastal region of Shyamnagar, Satkhira, to investigate the feasibility of Rice-Shrimp and Rice-Crabs mixed farming for adaptation to the changing climate and sustaining food production system. The experimental treatments were designed on rice-based diversified farming systems such as rice sole cropping with no NPKS + no soil amendments (T1), rice sole cropping following farmers’ practice (FP) without soil amendment (T2), rice sole cropping following FP with phosphogypsum (PG) amendment (T3), Rice-Shrimp mixed culture with PG amendment (T4), Rice-Crabs mixed culture with PG amendment (T5), Rice-Shrimp mixed culture + PG amendment with Spirulina (Cyanobacteria) inoculation (T6), and Rice-Crabs mixed culture + PG amendment with Spirulina inoculation (T7). A closed chamber technique was followed to collect gas samples from the rice paddy field and samples were analyzed by Gas Chromatograph. It was found that Rice-Shrimp (T6) and Rice-Crabs mixed farming (T7) practices significantly decreased GWPs compared to the rice sole cropping system. In the dry boro season, the maximum GWPs 4175 kg CO2 eq. ha-1 was recorded from rice sole cropping (T2), which was decreased by 30% and 36.7% under Rice-Shrimp (T6) and Rice-Crabs (T7) mixed farming practices, respectively. Furthermore, in the wet aman season, maximum GWP 4525 kg CO2 eq. ha-1 was recorded from rice sole cropping (T2), which was decreased by 33.0% and 38.8% under Rice-Shrimp and Rice-Crabs mixed farming, respectively. Contribution of Rice Plants and Cover Crop Biomass Amended Soil on Methane Emission

Rice plant and soil are playing vital role for produce of methane (CH4) emission from flooded rice soil. Contribution of rice plants and cover crop biomass amended soil on methane emission has not been yet studied under different cover crop biomass incorporated in paddy fields. Closed-chamber method was used to estimate CH4 emission rates during rice cultivation under soil plus rice plants and soil alone condition. Soil plus rice plants chambers 62 × 62 × 112 cm3 and soil alone chambers 20 × 20 cm2 were placed at the same time during rice cultivation (0 days after rice transplanting). Therefore, to evaluate the contribution of soil plus rice plants and soil alone on methane (CH4) emission under different rates of cover crop biomass incorporated soil during rice cultivation. Methane emission from soil plus rice plants increased up to 53 days after transplanting (DAT) and then it’s decreased and continued till harvesting. It was found that ca. 47% - 52% CH4 was mediated by rice plants and ca. 48% - 53% through rice soil alone under 12 Mg·ha-1 cover crop biomass incorporated treated plots. Whereas, only ca. 9% - 10% CH4 emission was mediated by rice plants and ca. 90% - 91% by rice soil alone when 0 and 3 Mg·ha-1 cover crop biomass was incorporated. Therefore, it could be concluded that rice soil alone was more influenced for CH4 emission than rice plants in paddy fields.

Objective:To observe the effectiveness of most widely used antibiotic,oxytetracycline(OTC)in reducing the bacterial load in rohu fish under artificial culture condition in the ***:The experiment was conducted in the Faculty Fisheries,Bangladesh Agricultural University,*** fish were reared in 8 aquaria where fish in 5 aquaria were used for replication of the treatment(experimental group)and fish in remaining 3 aquaria were considered as a control(Control group).OTC was fed to the fish in the experimental aquarium at the rate of 2 g/kg through diet twice daily whereas fish reared under control condition was given feed without antibiotic for 20 d and bacterial content in the aquarium water,gills,skin and intestine of fish were estimated at every alternative day after onset of the ***:Rearing the fish with OTC treated feed resulted in gradual decrease of bacterial load in the aquarium water,gills,intestine and skin of the fish whereas the content remain unchanged Or little increased in the control group.W ater quality parameters such as dissolved oxygen,pH and total hardness were within the suitable range in the experimental aquarium but not in control aquaria throughout the experimental ***:These results suggest that OTC could be a potential antibiotic to reduce the bacterial load in fish and can be used commercially for maintaining the fish health in aquarium conditions.

Genetic association study of P2x7 A1513C(rs 3751143) polymorphism and susceptibility to pulmonary tuberculosis: A meta-analysis based on the findings of 11 case-control studies

Objective:To summarize the precise association between pulmonary tuberculosis(PTB) and P2x7 A1513 C gene ***:PubMed and Google Scholar web-databases were searched for the studies reporting the association of P2x7 A1513 C polymorphism and PTB risk.A meta-analysis was performed for the selected case-control studies and pooled odds ratios(ORs) and 95%confidence intervals(95%CIs) were calculated for all the genetic ***:Eleven studies comprising 2 678 controls and 2 113 PTB cases were included in this *** observed overall no significant risk in all the five genetic *** stratified population by the ethnicity,Caucasian population failed to show any risk of PTB in all the genetics *** Asian ethnicity,variant allele(C vs.A:P=0.001;QR=1.375,95%CI=1.159-1.632) and heterozygous genotype(AC ***:P=0.001;OR=1.570,95%CI=1.269-1.944) demonstrated significant increased risk of ***,recessive genetic model(CC+AC ***:P=0.001;OR=1.540,95%CI= 1.255-1.890) also demonstrated increased risk of PTB in ***:Our meta-analysis did not suggest the association of P2x7 A1513 C polymorphism with PTB risk in overall or separately in Caucasian ***,it plays a significant risk factor for predisposing PTB in *** larger sample and expression studies are needed to validate this association.

Effect of Missing Nutrient Elements on Grain Yield of Wet Season Rice in Bangladesh

Background and objective: Long-term fertility study is one of the important factors to monitor changes in yield because of different nutrient management options and cropping systems involved in Asian regions. Many short-term and long-term fertilizer trials were conducted for intensive irrigated rice cropping patterns mostly to provide fertilizer rate, but did not considered sustainable soil management for soil health. The objective of the present study was to examine the effect of missing nutrient elements for a long time on rice yield, photosynthetic rate and residual soil fertility. Materials and Methods: The experiment was initiated on a permanent layout at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) farm, Gazipur during 2000 to 2008 in wet season. Seven treatments in randomized complete block design with four replications were imposed. Grain yield was determined at physiological maturity from three 5 m2 areas within each plot followed by bagging and threshing. Photosynthetic was measure by Li Cor 6400 (USA) machine during study period. Soil sample was analyzed for following standard methods. Results: It was found that grain yield was in decreasing trends for the missing elements that were similar with BR 11 and BRRI dhan 31. On an average, grain yield reductions were 11.6, 7.0, 10.6, 1.1 and 3.4 percent for -N, -P, -K, -S and -Zn, than complete fertilizer treatment (NPKSZn) respectively. Under no fertilization, the ability of soil was to produce 2.9 t·ha-1 of BR11 and 3.1 t·ha-1 of BRRI dhan 31 respectively. Photosynthetic rate of rice plant was always higher in complete fertilizer treatment (NPKSZn) than missing of any nutrient element. The decrease in photosynthetic rate was more pronounced with N missing than others for both the rice varieties. Conclusion: It is concluded that balance chemical fertilizers (NPKSZn) are to be used for sustained and/or increased rice production and to maintain soil fertility.

Objective:To assess the effects of a widely used antibiotic,oxytetracycline(OTC)on the bacterial microflora in two catfish species under artificial culture conditions in the ***:The experiment was conducted in the Faculty of Fisheries,Bangladesh Agricultural University,*** fish were reared in six aquaria(size 37 cm×30 cm×60 cm)where three aquaria served as replicates of the antibiotic treatment groups and the remaining three aquaria served as an untreated control *** aquarium was stocked with 25 fish on an average body weight 15 *** was administered to the fish in the treatment groups at the rate of 2 g/kg in-feed twice daily upto ad libitum,whereas fish in the untreated control groups were given the same feed without antibiotics for 20 *** the experiment,bacterial loads were estimated as colony forming unit(CFU/g)by every alternate day in the aquarium water,gills,skin and intestine of ***:The administration of OTC in feed resulted in gradual decrease of bacterial loads in the gills,intestine and skin of the two catfish species *** contrast,the bacterial loads remain unchanged or slightly increased in the control groups not fed with *** quality parameters such as dissolved oxygen,pH and total hardness were found to be within suitable range in the test aquaria but not in control aquarium throughout the experimental ***:The results of this experiment showed that in-feed antibiotic OTC for a period of 20d reduced the bacterial loads in the gills,intestines and skin of treated fish.

Objective:To assess the catch composition and seasonal variation in catch of set bagnet fishery from the coastal Payra river,to understand the importance and impact of set bagnet fishery on biodiversity and fisheries,and to find out feasible strategies to reduce the negative impact of set bagnet ***:The research was conducted with selection of research area,preparation of gear survey and catch assessment form,sample collection,laboratory analysis and selection of analytical methods to achieve the objectives of the ***:A total of 52 species belonging to 23 families were recorded from set bagnet in the Payra *** important commercial fishes and their annual catch by set bagnet in the study area were 51.03 MT Ilish(Tenualosa ilisha),8.83 MT Rita(Rita rita),6.92 MT Air(Sperata aor),4.72 MT Chital(Chitala chitala),2.03 MT Boal(Wallago attu),1.84 MT Baghair(Bagarius bagarius),3.35 MT Foli(Notopterus notopterus)and 13.46 MT Golda chingri(Macrobrachium rosenbergii).All these species were mostly caught at initial stages of their life cycle,which usually move with the tidal ***:Study suggested that set bagnet should be restricted to allowable limit with strong monitoring system for the protection and conservation of valuable fish species in the coastal areas of Bangladesh.

孟加拉国各省、区的人口分布存在着不均衡的特点，采取定量分析的方法，选取人口密度指数、胡佛指数和非均质性指数（index of concentration，Hoover’s index and in—homogeneity index）指标来分析孟加拉国人口分布现有的不平等程度和非均质性。研究结果表明，孟加拉国各省、区的人口集中都存在增加的趋势。同时，通过对斯皮尔曼等级相关系数（Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient）的计算，分析孟加拉国的各地区土地面积和人口密度的关系，发现二者之间存在着较大的负相关关系。

桥接组合式内固定系统与锁定钢板治疗锁骨中段骨折的Meta分析

目的:目前临床上治疗锁骨中段骨折最常用的是锁定钢板,桥接组合式内固定系统是一种新型内固定器械,其用于治疗锁骨中段骨折时间并不长,但是国内许多学者已经发表了很多篇临床研究来比较两者的疗效,但是尚无统一意见。文章对桥接组合式内固定系统和锁定钢板治疗锁骨中段骨折的临床疗效进行Meta分析。方法:应用计算机检索PubMed、Medline、The Cochrane Library、迈特思创FMRS外文医学信息平台、OVID医学期刊全文数据库、维普、中国知网和万方数字化期刊平台,收集2010年1月至2020年4月发表的对比桥接组合式内固定系统和锁定钢板治疗锁骨中段骨折的临床对照试验。根据纳入标准和排除标准筛选文献,采用Jadad量表和MINORS评分表进行文献质量评估,对纳入的研究进行质量评价以及数据提取,选择手术时间、术中出血量、骨折愈合时间、并发症及术后1年肩关节功能评分作为Meta分析的评价指标,利用Cochrane协作网提供的RevMan 5.2软件对纳入研究结果进行Meta分析。结果:①文章纳入了中文及外文文献共9篇,其中随机对照试验3篇,非随机对照试验6篇,共计613例锁骨中段骨折的患者,其中桥接组280例,钢板组333例;②通过Meta分析可得:两种方法在术后肩关节功能(md.3.23,95%CI:0.13-6.33,P=0.04)方面差异无显著性意义,但桥接组在手术时间(md.-4.62,95%CI:-9.08至-0.16,P=0.04)、术中出血量(md.-15.29,95%CI:-15.81至-14.47,Pmd.-2.88,95%CI:-3.10至-2.65,P<0.00001)和总体并发症(OR=0.21,95%CI:0.09-0.48,P=0.0002)方面均优于钢板组。结论:桥接组合式内固定系统与锁定钢板两种内固定技术治疗锁骨中段骨折,均能达到预期的治疗效果,两种修复方法在术后肩关节功能方面无显著差异,桥接组合式内固定系统在手术时间、术中出血量、骨折愈合时间及总体并发症方面较锁定钢板有一定优势。但限于该研究方法学质量的影响,文章结果还需谨慎对待,未来尚需要更多大样本、多中心随机对照试验进一步证实。
