Leaf Water Status and Its Relationship with Reproductive Responses of Common Bean (<i>Phaseolus vulgaris</i>L.) Genotypes under Water Stress

Two tolerant (BB24 and BB43) and two susceptible (BARI busbean-2 and BB04) genotypes of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were evaluated for their water status and its relationship with reproductive responses under continuous water stress (50% field capacity) and control (80% field capacity) conditions in a net house covered with polyethylene sheet at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Bangladesh. Under water stress condition, the susceptible genotype namely BB04 exhibited more negative leaf water potential (LWP) which was followed by that of BARI bushbean-2 in all the time of the day except at noon. The tolerant genotype namely BB24 exhibited less negative LWP at noon. The tolerant genotypes maintained higher relative water content (WRC) than the susceptible ones from dawn to dusk. The relationship between RWC and LWP was examined separately for four genotypes under water stress condition. The genotype BB24 showed a smaller decrease in RWC with more negative LWP than BB04. Water stress reduced pod setting ratio. The relationship between the leaf water status and reproductive responses showed that the genotype with a little reduction in mid-day drop of RWC or with high mid-day RWC displayed a high pod setting ratio.

Shock wave-boundary layer interactions(SWBLI)are observed in several practical high-speed internal flows,such as compressor blades,turbine cascades,nozzles and so *** induced oscillations(SIO),aerodynamic instabilities so-called buffet flows,flutter,aeroacoustic noise and vibration are the detrimental consequences of this unsteady shockboundary layer *** the present study,a numerical computation has been performed to investigate the compressible flow characteristics around a 12%thick biconvex circular arc airfoil in a two dimensional *** averaged Navier-Stokes equations with two equation k-ωshear stress transport(SST)turbulence model have been applied for the computational *** flow field characteristics has been studied from pressure ratio(ratio of back pressure,pb to inlet total pressure,p01)of 0.75 to *** present computational results have been compared and validated with the available experimental *** results showed that the internal flow field characteristics such as shock wave structure,its behavior(steady or unsteady)and the corresponding boundary layer interaction are varied with pressure ***-excited shock oscillation was observed at certain flow ***,the mode of unsteady shock oscillation and its frequency are varied significantly with change of pressure ratio.

A germination experiment of pre-treated seeds of Melia azedarach was conducted in the nursery of Forestry and Wood Technology Discipline,Khulna University,*** seeds of Melia azedarach were collected from healthy trees of National Botanical Garden,Bangladesh and were treated with five pre-sowing treatments（control,immersion in cold water,immersion in hot water,scarification with sand paper,and immersion in concentrated H2SO4） on seed *** revealed that the germination rates of pre-sowing treated seeds were significantly increased compared to those in control,except for cold water *** highest germination success（80%） was found in scarification with sand paper,followed by 74% and 69% in immersion in H2SO4 and hot water treatment,*** started on 8-11 days and completed on 20-21 days of the germination period in all *** of variance showed the significance difference in germination success among the treatments but no significance difference in germination period among the *** water treatment may be recommended on seed germination of the species in rural Bangladesh.

In this investigation micron-sized monodisperse magnetic composite polymer particles with amino and amide functional groups were prepared considering their applications in biotechnology. First, polystyrene/poly (acrylic acid-acrylam- ide-N-N-methylene-bis-acrylamide) [PS/P(AA-AAm-MBAAm)] composite polymer particles were prepared by seeded copolymerization. The carboxyl groups present on or near the particles surface were modified by amine-nucleophile, ethylene diamine (EDA), through pre-activation with dicyclohexyl carbodiimide as coupling agent. The aminated particles were then magnetically modified and named as aminated-Fe3O4 composite particles. Formation of such magnetic composite particles was confirmed by scanning electron micrographs, FTIR-spectra and magnetic susceptibility measurement. The produced composite particles were paramagnetic. To see the relative hydrophilic character of the particles surface the adsorption behavior of trypsin (TR) as biomolecule was studied on PS particles and aminated-Fe3O4 composite particles. The magnitude of adsorbed TR on PS particles was higher than that on aminated-Fe3O4 composite particles.

A study of batch and column adsorption using A. jiringa seed shell as a natural adsorbent to remove methylene blue from aqueous solution was carried out. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of A. jiringa seed shell in removing methylene blue as well as to determine the isotherm and adsorption kinetics of methylene blue by A. jiringa seed shells. Parameters in the batch study showed optimum pH for adsorption was at pH 7 with the optimum contact time of 60 minutes whereas the adsorbent dose obtained was 12 g/l. The percentage removal of methylene blue increased with elevated temperature while the ionic strength reduced the adsorption capacity in the dye uptake. Langmuir isotherm was suitable for this study rather than Freundlich model due to the higher regression value: R2 = 0.9999. The most suitable kinetic model for this study was the pseudo second order, compared to pseudo first order, Elovich and intra particle with the value of regression: R2 = 0.9158. This column adsorption study used several different flow rates: 15 mL/min, 18 mL/min, 21 mL/min, 24 mL/min and 27 mL/min for 75 minutes long. The breakthrough time was lesser: 10 minutes in higher flow rates (24 mL/min and 27 mL/min), which indicated the shorter time for the adsorbent to be saturated. Thomas and Yoon & Nelson’s models were proven to be more suitable compared to Bohart-Adams model for the fixed bed adsorption study.

A system involving a granular activated carbon (GAC) biofilm up-flow expanded bed (UEB) reactor and a slow down-flow packed sand filter was established for treating mosque grey water (ablution water).The faecal coliforms (FC),chemical oxygen demand (COD),total suspended solids (TSS),nitrate (NO 3),and ammonia as nitrogen (NH 4-N) were investigated under continuous flow operation using a hydraulic retention time (HRT) ranging from 1-6 hr over the period from 5/9/2010 to 6/2/*** system was arranged so that the GAC reactor is the first stage of treatment,and the sand filter is the second *** and effluent samples from the system were analysed *** system demonstrated satisfactory removal of faecal coliforms with removal efficiencies of 63-80 %,and the efficiencies of COD and TSS removal were 70 % and 72 %,*** system showed low removal efficiencies of nitrate which was 0-13 %.No ammonia removal was recorded in that range of retention time,while the system showed approximately 50 % removal efficiency on average for 12 hr of HRT.

We demonstrate a broad bandwidth multiwavelength laser based on a bidirectional Lyot filter and a semiconductor optical amplifier with a mechanism of intensity-dependent loss as the flatness agent. A wide bandwidth of a multiwavelength spectrum of 32.9 nm within a 5 dB uniformity is obtained under optimized polarization param- eters. For this case, the number of generated lasing lines is 329 with a fixed wavelength separation of 0.1 nm. The power stability of this multiwavelength laser is less than 1.35 dB within 200 min time frame. This shows that the bidirectional Lyot filter provides an alternative option for multiwavelength generation in laser systems.

Objective: To determine ex vivo antimalarial activity and cytotoxicity of endophytic Streptomyces SUK 08 as well as the main core structure fractionated from its crude ***: The activities of SUK 08 crude extract were evaluated by using the Plasmodium lactate dehydrogenase assay and synchronization test against rodent malaria parasite Plasmodium berghei, instead of human malarial parasite Plasmodium falciparum. The cytotoxicity of the crude extract was determined by MTT assay. The crude extract was analyzed by thin-layer chromatography and gas chromatography–mass ***: The ethyl acetate crude extract showed very promising antimalarial activity with IC50 of 1.25 mg/m L. The synchronization tests showed that ethyl acetate extraction could inhibit all stages of the Plasmodium life cycle, but it was most effective at the Plasmodium ring stage. On the basis of a MTT assay on Chang Liver cells, ethyl acetate and ethanol demonstrated IC50 values of >1.0 mg/m L. The IC50 of parasitemia at 5% and30% for this extract was lower than chloroquine. Thin-layer chromatography, with 1: 9 ratio of ethyl acetate: hexane, was used to isolate several distinct compounds. Based on gas chromatography–mass spectrophotometry analysis, three core structures were identified as cyclohexane, butyl propyl ester, and 2,3-heptanedione. Structurally, these compounds were similar to currently available antimalarial ***: The results suggest that compounds isolated from Streptomyces SUK 08 are viable antimalarial drug candidates that require further investigations.
