Patients with severe hearing loss have the option to get a cochlear implant device to regain their hearing. Yet, the implantation process is not always optimal, which in some cases results in a shallow insertion depth or an accidental insertion into the wrong cochlear duct. As a consequence, the patients' pitch discrimination ability is suboptimal, leading to an even more decreased vowel identification, which is vital for speech recognition. This paper presents a technical approach to solve this problem: the adaptive pitch transposition module modifies the frequency content in a fashion so that the pitch is fixed to an optimal value. To determine this value, a patient-individual best pitch is determined experimentally by evaluating speech recognition at different pitches. This best pitch is subsequently called the comfort pitch. As a result of the considerations a technical implementation is presented in principle. A system comprised of pitch detection, pitch transposition and an arbitrary chosen comfort pitch is described in depth. It has been implemented prototypically in Matlab/Octave and tested with an example audio file. The system?itself is designed as a preprocessing stage preceding cochlear implant processing.

Mesoporous molecular sieves, NbFAPO-5 and NbFAPSO-5 were hydrothermally synthesized with AlPO-5 type structure. Characterization of these molecular sieves was performed by X-ray diffraction to determine their structure, ICP-EAS for their elemental composition and infrared spectrometry to access their acidic properties. X-ray diffraction patterns confirmed well AlPO-5 type structure. ICP-EAS analysis confirmed the incorporation of silicon (12.9%), aluminium (15.4%), phosphorous (21.9%), iron (5.62%) and niobium (0.39%) into AlPO-5 framework. Infrared spectrometry analysis showed that both Bronsted and Lewis sites were found in the synthesized samples. The presence of both Bronsted and Lewis acid site led to bifunctional function of NbFAPO-5 and NbFAPSO-5 molecular sieve in promoting both oxidation and esterification reactions. NbFAPSO-5 Bronsted acidity was higher than that of NbFAPO-5 and for Lewis acidity, NbFAPO-5 was higher than that of NbFAPO-5.

Background Tubularized incised plate urethroplasty is the most common hypospadias repair ***,there are unanswered questions and debates about the anatomical prognostic factors affecting the repair *** study tried to address some of the problems in the studies compromising the results of the current body of *** A prospective cohort of 101 males aged 1-3 years undergoing primary distal to mid-shaft hypospadias repair were enrolled in the *** including edema,erection,inadvertent removal of the urethral stent,surgical wound infection,bladder spasm,hematoma,and hemorrhage were *** in the current literature were reviewed to achieve a better perspective for future *** Persistent complications were found in 16 cases(15.8%)including fistula formation,the persistence of chordee,meatal stenosis,glans,and urethral *** mean follow-up time was 6.6±3.4 *** the single-variable analysis,the meatal location,the length and width of the urethral plate,and the reversible acute postoperative events were significantly associated with the ***,fistula formation was associated with acute surgical site infection(p0.05).Conclusions Our study on the toddlers with hypospadias surgery revealed that the location of urethral meatal was the main predicting factor in the development of major ***,the fistula formation at the infected surgical site emphasizes the importance of postsurgical care.

＜正＞ In order to improve the performance of speech recognizers, particularly in degraded environments, it may be beneficial to integrate use of temporal information. As literature has shown that human listeners are able to use temporal cues in speech recognition tasks, this study examines algorithms for extraction of temporal cues in a speech signal. The task under analysis is the location of landmarks to direct further analysis in a knowledge-based speech recognition system. In this study, a set of robust landmark types were, located with an accuracy of 82.5%-100.0%.

The present work deals with the research of chemical constituents and evaluation of antioxidant properties of Bebotho propolis. From the ethyl acetate extract, we isolated, using various chromatographic techniques, a mixture of two identical compounds (isomers) indexed PBy4a and PByb. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by means of spectroscopic analysis techniques (MS, IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, HMBC and HSQC) and by comparison of the spectral data with those described in the literature. Thus, these compounds were identified to a mixture of two chromones namely 5,7-dihydroxy-2-methylchromone-6-C-α-D-glucopyranoside and 5,7-dihydroxy-2-methylchromone-8-C-β-D-glucopyranoside, first reported in propolis. The study of the antiradical power, chelating power and the quantification of phenolic compound of these same extracts, showed interesting properties that propolis extracts have to scavenge free radicals.

Winter Runoff of Nitrogen and Phosphorus from a Rotational Pen Design with Suckler Cows

Keeping beef cattle outdoors during winter reduces costs and improves animal welfare, but increases the risk of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) runoff losses. This study evaluated a rotational pen design on grassland with two groups of suckler cows given access to an expanding staying area and a new feeding area each week (72 cattle ha-1), with one month’s stay per pen. The spatial distribution of excreta and effects on N and P surface runoff was evaluated during six months. The total excreta loads corresponded to 500 kg·N·ha-1 and 50 kg·P·ha-1. New feeding areas did not distribute excretions evenly, which resulted in the highest proportion of excretions (31%) occurring in the first week’s sub-area. The topsoil had significantly higher amounts of mineral-N, mainly as NH4-N (29 - 81 kg·ha-1), than an unaffected area (13 kg·ha-1). Mean total runoff losses were similar for both groups (1.4 kg·P·ha-1 and 9.0 kg·N·ha-1). Around 78% of N and 70% of P runoff losses occurred during the month with cattle present. During the first two weeks with heavy rain, N and P runoff losses were 50% higher from an area with suckler cows than a corresponding vegetated sub-area without cows. The study design did not provide a sufficient distribution of excretions and a high animal density in combination with trampling resulted in unacceptable N and P run-off losses. An environmentally friendly design would need to include frequent moving of all equipment and access to larger areas.

Prolonged Release of the Local Anesthetic Butamben for Potential Use in Pain Management

Continuous delivery of local anesthetics might be useful for management of localized and chronic pain. Controlled release injectable anesthetics have been developed but they can deliver the drug for only few days and the release is not zero-order. A drug delivery system (DDS) consisting of a perforated reservoir for drug containment and release and its potential for management of chronic pain is described. Proof of principle is detailed for long-term zero order delivery of butamben. In this study, the DDS was a polyimide tube with a 0.20 mm hole and butamben release was evaluated in vitro. It is envisioned that the DDS could be implanted in proximity to a nerve, enervating the pain source, for long-term control of chronic pain.
