Implementation and validation of a bonded particle model to predict rheological properties of viscoelastic materials

This work focuses on implementing a particle-based method able to characterize viscoelastic materials whose rheological properties,such as storage modulus G′and loss modulus G″,are *** is based on the bonded particle model,with the elastic constitutive relation here substituted with a viscoelastic one to capture time-scale *** Burgers model,vastly used in literature to model viscoelastic systems,is discretized and *** test case used for calibration comprises of a cubic lattice,sheared with a periodic motion,to mimic the effect of a shear *** appropriate filtering of the stress response,the rheological properties are obtained,highlighting the effect of the lattice geometry,as well as the particle size,on the accuracy of the ***,the Burgers parameters are calibrated by analytically fitting the experimental dataset,showing the limitation of the Burgers *** micro-contact parameters are obtained from the macro parameters through appropriate *** completing a frequency sweep,the simulated G′and G″show a relatively large error,around 25%for G’for *** this reason,a more robust model,namely the generalized maxwell model,has been *** calibration procedure is performed in the same fashion as for the Burgers ***,the tangential micro-contact parameters are scaled *** normal *** scaling parameter,calledα,is calibrated by minimizing the root mean square error between simulation and experimental data,giving errors below 10%in both G′and G″for a large ***,a full ring plate-plate rheometer setup is simulated,and the simulation is compared with the given experimental dataset,again finding a good agreement.

Risk of early hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence following liver resection: arbitrary specification or possible target to improve outcome?

Data from the literature favour liver transplantation(LT)as best curative-intent treatment in patients with early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)arising from cirrhosis,as this approach targets both malignancy and the underlying cancerogenic *** strictly adhering to well-defined morphometric tumor burden limits,such as the Milan criteria,excellent recurrence-free survival(RFS)rates beyond 70%at 5 years may be achieved after ***,growing donor liver shortage has significantly increased waiting times and thereby risk of tumor-related dropout from the waiting list,ultimately resulting in inferior survival *** recent years,this critical situation further aggravated by growing evidence that beyond Milan patients may also benefit from LT,when being successfully downstaged by neoadjuvant locoregional interventions like transarterial chemoembolization(TACE)or radiofrequency ablation(RFA)(1).Therefore,even though being associated with an extraordinary risk of HCC recurrence accounting for 50%to 70%,upfront liver resection(LR)still represents the preferred surgical procedure in patients with resectable tumor stage,especially in those who do not suffer from severe portal hypertension.

Experimental study on influence of blade angle and particle size on particle mechanics on a batch-operated single floor of a multiple hearth furnace

In industry,multiple hearth furnaces are used for the thermal treatment of particulate *** current contribution concentrates on the experimental analysis of particle mechanics for a batch-operated single floor of a multiple hearth *** particles are agitated on the circular floor by a single,rotating rabble arm equipped with three flat rabble blades of 10 mm *** blade angle,defined as the angle,which the blade is inclined against the tangential direction,is varied from 0°to 90°.A single layer of spherical polyoxymethylene(POM)particles with three different diameters(5,10 and 20 mm)is placed on the *** analyze the results,two parameters have been extracted from image analysis when the bed of particles is agitated,first,the area not covered by particles and second,the frequency distribution of the mean distance among the *** particle free surface area increases with the inclination of the *** evolution of the particle free surface area differs for the different particle *** general,the maximum particle free area for all blade angles is the largest for the 5 mm particles followed by the 20 mm *** the 10 mm particles,the particle free surface area starts for a blade angle of 0°at larger values than for the 20 mm particles but the values fall below the values for the 20 mm particles for larger blade *** reason for this behavior is discussed in *** mean distance among the particles is a parameter characterizing the length scales dominating the effects on the *** frequency distribution of the mean distance among particles provides infor-mation about the morphology of the particle bulk,for example,whether the free surface area is inter-spersed with particles.

Animals constantly need to evaluate available external and internal information to make appropriate ***,assessing,and acting on relevant cues in contexts such as mate choice,intra-sexual competition,and parental care is particularly important for optimizing individual reproductive *** factors can infuence decision-making,such as external environmental cues and the animal’s own internal state,yet,we have limited knowledge on how animals integrate available ***,we used an entire island population(57 males,53 females,and 1,109 tadpoles)of the neotropical brilliant-thighed poison frog Allobates femoralis to investigate how 2 factors(olfactory cues and personality traits)infuence the ability of males to fnd and use new resources for tadpole *** experimentally manipulated the location of tadpole deposition sites and their associated olfactory cues,and repeatedly measured exploration and boldness in adult *** further reconstructed tadpole deposition choices via inferred parent–offspring relationships of adult frogs and tadpoles deposited in our experimental pools using molecular parentage *** found that the discovery and use of new rearing sites were heavily infuenced by olfactory cues;however,we did not fnd an effect of the measured behavioral traits on resource discovery and *** conclude that in highly dynamic environments such as tropical rainforests,reliable external cues likely take priority over personality traits,helping individuals to discover and make use of reproductive resources.

Data-Driven Earthquake Multi-impact Modeling: A Comparison of Models

In this study, a broad range of supervised machine learning and parametric statistical, geospatial, and non-geospatial models were applied to model both aggregated observed impact estimate data and satellite image-derived geolocated building damage data for earthquakes, via regression-and classification-based models, respectively. For the aggregated observational data, models were ranked via predictive performance of mortality, population displacement, building damage, and building destruction for 375 observations across 161 earthquakes in 61 countries. For the satellite image-derived data, models were ranked via classification performance(damaged/unaff ected) of 369,813 geolocated buildings for 26 earthquakes in 15 countries. Grouped k-fold, 3-repeat cross validation was used to ensure out-of-sample predictive performance. Feature importance of several variables used as proxies for vulnerability to disasters indicates covariate utility. The 2023 Türkiye–Syria earthquake event was used to explore model limitations for extreme events. However, applying the AdaBoost model on the 27,032 held-out buildings of the 2023 Türkiye–Syria earthquake event, predictions had an AUC of 0.93. Therefore, without any geospatial, building-specific, or direct satellite image information, this model accurately classified building damage,with significantly improved performance over satellite image trained models found in the literature.

Identification of key genes regulating the synthesis of quercetin derivatives in Rosa roxburghii through integrated transcriptomics and metabolomics

Rosa roxburghii fruit is rich in flavonoids, but little is known about their biosynthetic pathways. In this study, we employed transcriptomics and metabolomics to study changes related to the flavonoids at five different stages of R. roxburghii fruit development. Flavonoids and the genes related to their biosynthesis were found to undergo significant changes in abundance across different developmental stages, and numerous quercetin derivatives were identified. We found three gene expression modules that were significantly associated with the abundances of the different flavonoids in R. roxburghii and identified three structural UDP-glycosyltransferase genes directly involved in the synthesis of quercetin derivatives within these modules. In addition, we found that RrBEH4, RrLBD1 and RrPIF8could significantly increase the expression of downstream quercetin derivative biosynthesis genes. Taken together,these results provide new insights into the metabolism of flavonoids and the accumulation of quercetin derivatives in R. roxburghii.

Instance Segmentation of Characters Recognized in Palmyrene Aramaic Inscriptions
