The study presented hereby investigates experimentally and with CFD simulations the gas distribution effect on the hydrodynamic of a Geldart Group A turbulent fluidized bed. Experiments were carried out on a cold flow fluidized bed column with an even and uneven gas distribution. Local solid volume fraction profiles were measured using optical probes at different bed heights and along two radial directions. Optical probe measurements allow catching a clear hydrodynamic difference between both even and uneven gas distributions. These results were then used to assess CFD simulations with the code Barracuda^(TM) (MP-PIC approach). It is noteworthy that the choice of drag correlation and boundary conditions strongly influences the agreement between the experimental and CFD results. Once the correct parameters are chosen, CFD simulations captured the effect of gas distribution changes.

Therapeutic apheresis is a cornerstone of therapy for several conditions in transplantation medicine and is available in different technical variants. In the setting of kidney transplantation, immunological barriers such as ABO blood group incompatibility and preformed donor-specific antibodies can complicate the outcome of deceased-or living-donor transplantation. Postoperatively,additional problems such as antibody-mediated rejection and a recurrence of primary focal segmental glomerulosclerosis can limit therapeutic success and decrease graft survival. Therapeutic apheresis techniques find application in these issues by separating and selectively removing exchanging or modifying pathogenic material from the patient by an extracorporeal aphaeresis system. The purpose of this review is to describe the available techniques of therapeutic aphaeresis with their specific advantages and disadvantages and examine the evidence supporting the application of therapeutic aphaeresis as an adjunctive therapeutic option to immunosuppressive agents in protocols before and after kidney transplantation.

Aim of this frontier review has been to highlight the role of microbiota in healthy subjects and in patients affected by renal diseases with particular reference to renal *** microbiota has a relevant role in conditioning the healthy status and the *** particular gut microbiota is essential in the metabolism of food and has a relevant role for its relationship with the immune *** indigenous microbiota in patients with chronic renal failure is completely different than that of the healthy subjects and pathobionts *** abnormality in microbiota composition is called dysbiosis and may cause a rapid deterioration of the renal function both for activating the immune system and producing large quantity of uremic ***,after renal transplantation the microbiota changes with the appearance of pathobionts,principally in the first period because of the assumption of immunosuppressive drugs and *** changes may deeply interfere with the graft outcome causing acute rejection,renal infections,diarrhea,and renal interstitial *** addition,change in the microbiota may modify the metabolism of immunosuppressive drugs causing in some patients the need of modifying the immunosuppressant *** restoration of the indigenous microbiota after transplantation is important,either to avoiding the complications that impair the normal renal graft,and because recent studies have documented the role of an indigenous microbiota in inducing tolerance towards the *** use of prebiotics,probiotics,smart bacteria and diet modification may restore the indigenous microbiota,but these studies are just at their beginning and more data are needed to draw definitive conclusions.

Aims Silvicultural management plays a major role in shaping understory diversity through its action on stand *** many parts of Europe,recent socioeconomic changes have led to the progressive abandonment of coppicing in favor of high forest(HF)*** order to examine how this change impacts understory species,we compared old coppice-with-standards and HF stands in terms of structural features and understory richness and composition,also taking into account the diagnostic species pool of the *** the management systems for coppices and HFs differ in cutting regime,we expect that they would cause different changes in floristic composition and *** The study area was the Montagne della Duchessa massif,in central *** differences and floristic richness were compared,and the diagnostic species diversity was analyzed using rarefaction curves and Rényi diversity *** in understory com-position were analyzed through indicator species *** Findings Our results showed that,though the old coppices have a slightly higher number of understory species in general,the HF stands have greater mean species richness in both understory and diagnostic species,the latter being more evenly distributed inside the *** finding were related to the cut regime,which favor a constant canopy cover over time and thus the maintenance of more stable microclimatic conditions,promoting the higher abundance and evenness of shade-tolerant and vernal ***,the dense canopy of the old coppice appears to affect the understory richness by reducing the presence of light-demanding species,but still without a complete recolonization of the shade-tolerant ***,our findings provide the first insights supporting that,in a Mediterranean montane context,old coppice conversion to HF could over time improve the species diversity in these habitats and help maintain good conservation status of the typical

Particle image velocimetry(PIV)is an experimental technique that uses microscale particles as tracers to measure the velocity of a fluid *** this paper,we seek to extend this technique to simultaneously measure fluid temperature as well,by employing a novel class of thermosensitive polymer *** this aim,we designed a process to encapsulate highly fluorescent thermosensitive NBD-AE-co-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)polymers into optically transparent poly(dimethylsiloxane)*** novel PIV particles enable direct measurement of water velocity while serving as temperature probes that increase their fluorescence intensity when the temperature rises above 32°*** demonstrate the ability of the particles to simultaneously serve as flow tracers and temperature sensors in water,we examine the flow velocity and temperature in the wake of a heated cylinder in a cross *** results indicate the possibility of extending PIV to afford the spatial and temporal resolution of fluid velocity and temperature gradients in water,with potential application to the study of convection problems from life sciences to engineering.

Aim of this study was to investigate relationships between the red palm weevil （RPW） Rhynchophorusferrugineus （Olivier） and the entomopathogenic nematode Stein- ernema carpocapsae （EPN）; particularly, the work was focused on the immune response of the insect host in naive larvae and after infection with the EPN. Two main immunological processes have been addressed： the activity and modulation of host prophenoloxidase- phenoloxidase （proPO） system, involved in melanization of not-self and hemocytes recog- nition processes responsible for not-self encapsulation. Moreover, immune depressive and immune evasive strategies of the parasite have been investigated. Our results suggest that RPW possess an efficient immune system, however in the early phase of infection, S. carpocapsae induces a strong inhibition of the host proPO system. In addition, host cell- mediated mechanisms of encapsulation, are completely avoided by the parasite, the elusive strategies orS. carpocapsae seem to be related to the structure of its body-surface, since induced alterations of the parasite cuticle resulted in the loss of its mimetic properties. S. carpocapsae before the release of its symbiotic bacteria, depress and elude RPW immune defenses, with the aim to arrange a favorable environment for its bacteria responsible of the septicemic death of the insect target.

Transient elastography: A non-invasive tool for assessing liver fibrosis in HIV/HCV patients

AIM: To assess the prevalence of advanced liver fibrosis (ALF) in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and HIV/HCV patients using transient elastography, and to identify factors associated with ALF. METHODS: Between September 2008 and October 2009, 71 HIV mono-infected, 57 HIV/HCV co-infected and 53 HCV mono-infected patients on regular follow-up at our Center were enrolled in this study. Alcohol intake, the main parameters of liver function, presence of HCV-RNA, HIV-RNA, duration of highly active anti-retroviraltherapy (HAART) and CD4 cell count were recorded. ALF was defined as liver stiffness (LS) ≥ 9.5 kPa. To estimate liver fibrosis (LF) a further 2 reliable biochemical scores, aspartate aminotransferase platelet ratio index (APRI) and FIB-4, were also used. RESULTS: LS values of co-infected patients were higher than in either HIV or HCV mono-infected patients (χ 2M H = 4, P 9.5 kPa. There was no significant correlation between extent of LF and HAART exposure or duration of HAART exposure, in particular with specific dideoxynucleoside analogues. The manufacturing of nanomaterials by the electrospinning process requires accurate and meticulous inspection of related scanning electron microscope(SEM)images of the electrospun nanofiber,to ensure that no structural defects are *** presence of anomalies prevents practical application of the electrospun nanofibrous material in ***,the automatic monitoring and quality control of nanomaterials is a relevant challenge in the context of Industry *** this paper,a novel automatic classification system for homogenous(anomaly-free)and non-homogenous(with defects)nanofibers is *** inspection procedure aims at avoiding direct processing of the redundant full SEM ***,the image to be analyzed is first partitioned into subimages(nanopatches)that are then used as input to a hybrid unsupervised and supervised machine learning *** the first step,an autoencoder(AE)is trained with unsupervised learning to generate a code representing the input image with a vector of relevant ***,a multilayer perceptron(MLP),trained with supervised learning,uses the extracted features to classify non-homogenous nanofiber(NH-NF)and homogenous nanofiber(H-NF)*** resulting novel AE-MLP system is shown to outperform other standard machine learning models and other recent state-of-the-art techniques,reporting accuracy rate up to92.5%.In addition,the proposed approach leads to model complexity reduction with respect to other deep learning strategies such as convolutional neural networks(CNN).The encouraging performance achieved in this benchmark study can stimulate the application of the proposed scheme in other challenging industrial manufacturing tasks.

We were very interested to read the study recently published in Gastroenterology by Moon et al. (1). Performed as a case-control study within the US Veterans Affairs health care system, the study aimed to assess the association between screening for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cancer related-mortality in patients with cirrhosis. The authors did not find any evidence that screening patients with cirrhosis by abdominal ultrasound (US) or alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels decreases HCC-related mortality.
