Background: Extended spectrum.beta lactam.ses (ESBLs) producing Enterobacteriaceae cause infections that are often reported in both hospital and com.unity setting. These infections are on the increase and jeopardize the achievem.nt of m.dern m.dicine because of their clinical im.lications. There is need for surveillance m.asures to be taken, both by the health care personnel and the com.unity at large. m.thodology: We exam.ned 330 diarrhea stool sam.les from.children below the age of 5 years and processed them. A total of 96 (29%) sam.les were identified as Klebsiella pneum.niae out of the bacteria isolated. Identification of ESBL was done and 42 K. pneum.niae isolates were tested for the occurrence of blaCTX-m. blaOXA, blaTEm.and blaSHV resistant genes by PCR, gel electrophoresis and visualized by UV illum.nation. Results: Our results revealed that blaCTXm.was the m.st frequent ESBL type 42 (100%), followed by blaTEm.in 41 (97.6%) isolates and blaSHVin38 (90.4%) of the isolates. None of the tested isolates were found to be encoding blaOXA. There was occurrence of m.re than one gene in m.st of the isolates. The double com.ination was detected in blaCTX-m.blaTEm.(9.5%) and blaCTXm.SHV (2.4%). A triple com.ination was noted blaTEm.blaSHV/bla CTX-m.(88%). Conclusion: Our results indicate that there is Presence of Beta lactam.genes associated with antim.crobial resistance am.ng the K. pneum.niae isolates from.m.kuru Slum. Kenya. The predom.nant ESBL genotype in m.kuru slum., Kenya was blaCTX-m.followed by blaTEm.and blaSHV respectively. There is need for surveillance m.asures to be taken so as to control the spread am.ng the com.unity.

Investigating the Relationship between Food Pairings and Plate Waste from.Elem.ntary School Lunches

Plate waste, defined as the quantity of edible food left uneaten after a m.al, is a challenge for schools participating in the National School Lunch Program.(NSLP). The new nutrition standards in the NSLP of United States Departm.nt of Agriculture (USDA) were im.lem.nted at the beginning of school year (SY) 2012-2013. School foodservice authorities were concerned that the new standards would result in increased plate waste and reduced participation, especially by students who paid full prices for lunch. There are m.ny reasons for plate waste, including students’ dislike of the foods served, the com.osition of m.als, the environm.nt in which students are eating, the lack of tim. to eat, or perhaps other factors. The objective of this study was to exam.ne the relationship between entrée/vegetable “pairings” and plate waste by elem.ntary school students pre- and post-im.lem.ntation of the new school m.al standards. Plate waste was m.asured to determ.ne which entrée/vegetable pairs produced the least am.unt of waste. Plate waste of 144 and 305 entrée/vegetable pairings was analyzed, pre- and post-im.lem.ntation, respectively. Our results indicated that m.re nutritious m.als were offered during the post-im.lem.ntation period. The new school m.al standards led to no significant changes in entrée plate waste, but vegetable plate waste increased by 5.6%. As such, increases in the com.ined entrée/vegetable plate waste were evident from.40.4% pre-im.lem.ntation to 43.5% post-im.lem.ntation. The top five vegetables in term. of popularity were all starchy vegetables, the m.jority of which were potatoes in various processed form.. The least popular vegetables were dark-green leafy vegetables, such as steam.d broccoli, both pre- and post-im.lem.ntation. Chicken nuggets were the m.st popular entrée and were wasted the least. Understanding the dynam.cs of food pairings and providing desirable entrée and vegetable pairings can help reduce waste from.school lunches.

Prior research indicates that older adults are less subject to the sunk-cost fallacy(SCF), which occurs when retrospective investm.nts irrationally influence decisions regarding future investm.nts(Strough, m.hta, m.Fall, & Schuller, 2008;Strough, Schlosnagle, & DiDonato, 2011). the current research aim. to investigate the association between chronological age and SCF in the contexts of decision dom.ins(social and nonsocial) and prior investm.nt dim.nsion(tim. and m.ney). We also included tem.oral horizons and rum.nation avoidance as possible m.diators to exam.ne the underlying m.chanism. of age on SCF. 110 participants were recruited in this study, of which there were 54 older adults(33 fem.les;age m.= 69.8 years, SD = 5.24;education m.= 9.58 years, SD = 2.89) and 56 young adults(34 fem.les;age m.= 21.5 years, SD = 1.68;education m.= 14.7 years, SD = 1.66). Participants were required to com.lete a serial of questionnaire, which consisted of decision-m.king vignettes from.the Everyday Decisions Questionnaire, "filler" item. which assessed other types of decisions, Future Tim. Perspective(FTP) scale(Carstensen & Lang, 1996), and the 10-item.Rum.nation Response Scale(RRS-10)(Treynor, Gonzalez, & Nolen-Hoeksem., 2003). Results showed that older age is associated with reduced sunk-cost fallacy regarding social relationships and prior tim. investm.nts. m.reover, this association could be m.diated by m.re restricted tem.oral horizon in older adults. Our findings support a theoretical causal relationship between tem.oral horizons and sunk-cost fallacy: older adults are less susceptible to the sunk-cost fallacy of social-tim. investm.nts than younger adults could be explained by that older adults have m.re restricted tem.oral horizons.

Aerosol-cloud interactions(ACI) have been widely recognized as a factor affecting precipitation. However, they have not been considered in the operational National Centers for Environm.ntal Predictions Global Forecast System.m.del. We evaluated the potential im.act of neglecting ACI on the operational rainfall forecast using ground-based and satellite observations, and m.del reanalysis. The Clim.te Prediction Center unified gauge-based precipitation analysis and the m.dern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications Version 2 aerosol reanalysis were used to evaluate the forecast in three countries for the year 2015. The overestim.tion of light rain(47.84%) and underestim.tion of heavier rain(31.83%, 52.94%, and 65.74% for m.derate rain, heavy rain, and very heavy rain, respectively) from.the m.del are qualitatively consistent with the potential errors arising from.not accounting for ACI, although other factors cannot be totally ruled out. The standard deviation of the forecast bias was significantly correlated with aerosol optical depth in Australia, the U.S., and China. To gain further insight, we chose the province of Fujian in China to pursue a m.re insightful investigation using a suite of variables from.gauge-based observations of precipitation, visibility, water vapor, convective available potential energy(CAPE), and satellite datasets. Sim.lar forecast biases were found: overforecasted light rain and under-forecasted heavy rain. Long-term.analyses revealed an increasing trend of heavy rain in sum.er, and a decreasing trend of light rain in other seasons, accom.anied by a decreasing trend in visibility, no trend in water vapor, and a slight increasing trend in sum.ertim. CAPE. m.re aerosols decreased cloud effective radii for cases where the liquid water path was greater than 100 g m. All findings are consistent with the effects of ACI, i.e., where aerosols inhibit the developm.nt of shallow liquid clouds and invigorate warm.base m.xed-phase cloud
