Rumex abyssinica Jacq. (Polygonaceae) is locally used in management of allergies and female reproductive healthcare;whereas Mentha spicata L. (Lamiaceae) is used to treat gastrointestinal and respiratory distress, dandruff, halitosis and malaria in Uganda. Owing to the paucity of data on their safety profiles, this study evaluated the acute and sub-acute toxicities of 70% ethanolic leaf extracts of both plants in mice and Wistar albino rats. The oral acute toxicity of both plants was evaluated in Swiss mice of 7-8 weeks old (16-22 g) body weight and LD50 determined. Sub-acute toxicity was evaluated in Wistar albino rats (6 per group) at dose rates of 500, 1000 and 1500 mg/kg for 28 days. The LD50 of R. abyssinica and M. spicata in mice was 7727 mg/kg and 13,606 mg/kg body weight, respectively. General signs of toxicity due to large doses of both plants extract included hyperurination, abdominal muscle twitches and convulsions. In the sub-acute toxicity test, rats treated with both extracts did not exhibit any clinical signs of toxicity;no mortality and changes in body weight were observed. R. abyssinica did not cause significant changes in haematological indices, except a significant increase in HCT (p 0.05). However, a dose dependant significant decrease in HCT (p 0.05) and a significant increase (p 0.05) in the levels of WBC, LMY and MCHC were observed in rats treated with M. spicata extract. Biochemical test showed that both extracts caused a significant dose dependent increase (p 0.05) in levels of ALT and ALP. Optic Neuritis in Acute Neuroborreliosis (Lyme Disease) in the U.S.-Mexican Border: Case Report

Objective: We describe a patient diagnosed with acute neuroborreliosis presenting with anterior optic neuritis (papillitis) in a non-endemic region. Case Presentation: A 43-year-old previously healthy right handed man admitted due to an insidious onset of severe headache and spells of ascending paresthesias from his right foot into his right arm and face followed by speech arrest and clumsiness of his right hand. His neurologic exam was significant for somnolence, nuchal rigidity and Kernig and Brudzinski signs were present. MRI of the brain with gadolinium showed diffuse hyperintense signal involving the supra and infratentorial cortical sulci, with associated faint diffuse leptomeningeal enhancement, consistent most likely with diffuse leptomeningoencephalitis. EEG: normal. CSF VDRL was negative. Dilated fundus exam revealed mild optic nerve edema more significant to the left than to the right eye, confirmed and measured by spectral domain OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography). There was an evidence of posterior uveitis with an early vitreous hemorrhage superficial to the left optic nerve. Lyme disease serum antibody (IgM) Immunoblotting was positive in 2 bands confirming the diagnosis of neuroborreliosis. Conclusion: Optic nerve involvement in Lyme disease is an uncommon complication that should be confirmed by specific diagnostic criteria to establish its causal relation.

Ghanaian society and the world at large have shown a strong interest in the use of lampshades with evidence from hotels and residential dwellings. Table-top Lampshades direct the rays of light to make sight easier for reading whereas bedside lampshades provide romantic illumination and beautification in bedrooms. This art studio research sought to examine lampshades on Ghanaian market;their qualities, significance, shortcomings, etc. as the basis to design and produce inventive lampshades for private and public use. The study was conducted at an art studio condition using Practice-based research design method. Findings show that lampshades serve functional and aesthetic significance in public dwellings and the hospitality industry. Nonetheless, available lampshades on the Ghanaian market lack the multifunctional property as well as a local touch which arguably makes them misfit in Ghanaian context in terms of usage. The innovative results of the studio-produced lampshades revealed the possibility of creating symbolic and multifunctional lampshades which suit specific space and tradition. The study recommends the adoption of such innovative design approach in the creation of interior design and decoration artefacts for residential and public edifices.

Spatio-temporal variability and dynamics in Sahelian agro-pastoral zones make each local situation a special case. These specificities must be considered to guide the dissemination of agricultural options with a view to sustainable development. The territorial scale of municipalities is not sufficient for this necessary contextualization;the scale of the “village terroir” seems to be a better option. This is the hypothesis we put forward in the framework of the Global Collaboration for Resilient Food Systems program (CRFS), i.e. local context is spatially defined by village terroir. The study is based on data collected through participatory mapping and surveys in “village terroirs” in three regions of Niger (Maradi, Dosso and Tillabéri). Then the links between farm managers and their cultivated land, as well as the spatio-temporal dynamics of local context are analyzed. This study provides evidence of the existence and functional usefulness of the village terroir for farmers, their land management and their activities. It demonstrates the usefulness of contextualizing agricultural options at this scale. Their analysis elucidates the links between “terroirs village” and the specific functioning of the agrosocio-ecosystems acting on each of them, thus laying the systemic and geographical foundations for a model of the spatio- temporal dynamics of “village terroirs”. This initial work has opened up new perspectives in modeling and sustainable development.

Background Increased neurofilament levels in biofluids are commonly used as a proxy for neurodegeneration in several neurodegenerative *** this study,we aimed to investigate the distribution of neurofilaments in the cerebral cortex of Parkinson’s disease(PD),PD with dementia(PDD)and dementia with Lewy bodies(DLB)donors,and its association with pathology load and MRI measures of atrophy and *** Using a within-subject post-mortem MRI-pathology approach,we included 9 PD,12 PDD/DLB and 18 age-matched control *** thickness and mean diffusivity(MD)metrics were extracted respectively from 3DT1 and DTI at 3T in-situ *** autopsy,pathological hallmarks(pSer129-αSyn,p-tau and amyloid-βload)together with neurofilament light-chain(NfL)and phosphorylated-neurofilament medium-and heavy-chain(p-NfM/H)immunoreactivity were quantified in seven cortical regions,and studied in detail with confocal-laser scanning *** correlations between MRI and pathological measures were studied using linear mixed *** Compared to controls,p-NfM/H immunoreactivity was increased in all cortical regions in PD and PDD/DLB,whereas NfL immunoreactivity was increased in the parahippocampal and entorhinal cortex in PDD/***-positive neurons showed degenerative morphological features and axonal *** increased p-NfM/H correlated with p-tau load,and NfL correlated with pSer129-αSyn but more strongly with p-tau load in PDD/***,neuro-filament immunoreactivity correlated with cortical thinning in PD and with increased cortical MD in PDD/*** Taken together,increased neurofilament immunoreactivity suggests underlying axonal injury and neurofilament accumulation in morphologically altered neurons with increased pathological ***,we demonstrate that such neurofilament markers at least partly explain MRI measures that are associated with the neurodegenerative process.
