Mercury Concentration Profile in Sediment Cores of a Tropical Lagoon under High Anthropogenic Activities around an Urban City—Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire

The present study focuses on the quantification of mercury in sediment cores from Cocody, Banco, Koumassi and Milliardaires bays in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. It aims at assessing the state of mercury contamination of the lagoon bottom using DMA-80 (Direct Mercury Analyser). The automatic analyzer DMA-80 mercury is an innovative instrument for the analysis of mercury at very low content in solid and liquid samples in five minutes, without requiring any prior steps of pretreatment wet. The results showed, according to the lithological description of different bays, that the cored sediments consist of mud, sand, sandy mud or muddy sand with occasional shells. In addition, our results showed the presence of mercury in the sediments of the lagoon bottom at a degree of contamination that varies from moderate to very high according to the calculated contamination factor (CF) values. The highest contamination was observed in Cocody Bay at the surface with a contamination factor of 7.5, while the lowest contamination was observed in Milliardaires Bay at the water-sediment interface with a contamination factor of 1.67. In addition, mercury concentrations compared to sediment guide values (SQGs) reveal that these sediments mostly show occasional biological effects but no toxicity except Koumassi core (sediments at 20 cm depth). Also, dredging, hydrodynamics have probably impacted the mercury content. The depositional environment of mercury metal is therefore a limiting factor for its fate in the aquatic environment.

Analysis of Climate Variability and Relation to Vegetation in Garamba National Park from 1990-2020

Climatic factors impact vegetation. Our study was to examine and analyze the climate variability and relationship to vegetation in Garamba National Park of the Democratic Republic of the Congo over the past 30 years (1990 to 2020), then to relate the climatic variables. Mann Kendall’s non parametric test, ANOVA, and p-value tests are used to analyze existing trends and relationships between vegetation cover, climatic factors, land surface temperature (LST) and normalized difference in temperature Vegetation index (NDVI), Enhanced vegetation index (EVI) in Garamba national park which is of particular importance for the network of protected areas of the Democratic republic of Congo because its position at the northern limit of the savanna-forest mosaics gives it a unique biodiversity. The southern part of the park is dominated by grassy shrub savannas. The results showed that: 1) In Garamba, the monthly correlation coefficient of Kendall and Pearsan between temperature and precipitation are negative respectively 0.763 and −0.876 (p-value < 0.00001). 2) Annually during the three decades in Garamba, the correlation between precipitation and NDVI is significant 0.416 (Kendall) and 0.496 (Pearsan);the same between precipitation and EVI 0.291 (Kendall) and 0.496 (Pearsan) while LST and precipitation are negatively correlated (p-value < 0.00001).

Background:Recent investigations highlighted that Hermetia illucens(BSF)larva meal can be a valuable alternative protein source for aquafeed *** this study,in substitution of fishmeal,we used increasing inclusion levels of a partially defatted BSF larva meal in low fishmeal-based diets for rainbow trout(Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum)and we evaluated the related implications in terms of growth performance,physical characteristics,proximate and fatty acid(FA)compositions of the fillets,gut and liver histology,and diet *** a 131-day trial,576 fish(100.1±9.29 g)were randomly allotted to 24 tanks(24 fish/tank,4 replicates/treatment).Six experimental diets were produced to have partial replacement of fishmeal(0,10%,20%,30%,40%and 50%)by increasing levels of BSF meal(0%[BSF0],3%[BSF3],6%[BSF6],9%[BSF9],12%[BSF12]and 15%[BSF15]on as fed basis,respectively).Results:No differences were observed among the treatments for all the considered growth performance *** viscero and hepato-somatic indexes showed significant differences among the treatments,with the highest values observed in the BSF15 *** differences were recorded in terms of fillet’s physical characteristics,dry matter(DM),crude protein(CP)and ether extract(EE)*** saturated and monounsaturated FA increased,while polyunsaturated FA(particularly n-3 FA)decreased while increasing the HI meal inclusion in the *** of liver and gut was not affected,whereas,in posterior gut,villi were higher in BSF6 and BSF9 compared to BSF3 *** apparent digestibility of DM,CP,EE and gross energy did not vary among the ***:These results suggest that a partially defatted BSF meal could be included up to 15%in low fishmeal-based diets for rainbow trout with no adverse effects on growth performance,fillet’s physical characteristics,gut and liver health,and diet *** the contrary,the fillet FA composition worsened while increasing the level of BSF

Bladder Cancer in Young Patients: Management and Outcomes

Background and Objective: Bladder cancer frequently occurs between the ages of 50 years and 70 years and rarely occurs before the age of 40 years. It accounts for 1% - 4% of all cases of cancer. This study focuses on the clinical, etiological, histological, therapeutic, and evolutive profiles of patients with bladder cancer aged less than 45 years. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was carried out over seven years (from January 2014 to December 2020) on 15 patients below 45 years of age who were being treated for bladder cancer. The diagnosis was made in all patients via cystoscopy and abdominal computerized tomography, while the nature, grade, and degree of infiltration were determined via endoscopic resection and pathology. Results: The mean age of the 15 patients in this study was 34.4 ± 5.19 years. In 86.6% of cases, the patients had macroscopic hematuria as the main presenting complaint. Twelve patients (80%) had bladder tumors that did not infiltrate the muscle. These patients were followed up clinically. In 86.6% of cases, there was a single tumor with a mean diameter of 2.53 cm. In four patients (26.6%), mitomycin was started early. The overall rates of tumor recurrence and progression were 26.6% and 20%, respectively. Conclusion: Bladder cancer also occurs in young people, with similar clinical and epidemiological profiles as exists in elderly patients. The prognosis of bladder cancer in young people depends on the treatment method chosen by the physician.

Bipolar Transurethral Prostate Resection: A Study of 112 Cases

Background: With the advancement of technology, prostate resection can be performed nowadays using endoscopic techniques, which include monopolar and bipolar transurethral prostate resection. This study aimed to evaluate the results of bipolar transurethral prostate resection in a single urology center in Cameroon. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective study carried out over two years (2015-2017) involving 112 patients with symptomatic prostate diseases who underwent transurethral prostate resection with the help of a bipolar Olympus generator. Results: The ages of the participants ranged from 44 years to 85 years, with a mean age of 64.41 ± 9.5 years. Fifty-six (50%) patients presented with only obstructive symptoms, five (4.46%) had only irritative symptoms, twenty (17.86%) presented with both obstructive and irritative symptoms, eight (7.14%) presented with macroscopic hematuria, seven (6.25%) with urinary tract infections, and sixteen (14.29%) with acute urinary retention. Digital rectal examination was unremarkable in 74 (66.07%) findings and was positive in 38 (33.93%) patients. The median prostate diameter was 70 [59 - 86.5] mm. The mean preoperative IPSS was 24.46 ± 5.68. The mean surgery duration was 77.61 ± 23.87 minutes. The mean volume of irrigation fluid used during surgery was 24.84 ± 6.40 ml. The differences between the preoperative and postoperative mean IPPS score, maximum urine flow rate, and quality of life were statistically significant (all P Conclusion: Bipolar transurethral prostate resection is a viable alternative to open surgery or laparoscopic surgery for large prostate glands. This technique is also associated with a reduction in prostate-related morbidity.

Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumours: Results and Outcomes

Aim: This study aimed to determine the demographic, clinical, paraclinical, therapeutic, and evolutive characteristics of patients with bladder tumors who underwent transurethral resection of bladder tumors (TURBT) at a urology center in Douala, Cameroon. Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective study carried out from 2015 to 2019 on 32 patients with bladder tumors that were managed at the Centre medico-chirugical d’urologie in Douala, Cameroon. The relevant data were obtained from patients’ clinical records. Results: A total of 32 patients (25 men and 7 women) aged 29 - 75 years were included in this study. The mean age of the study participants was 58.63 ± 11.00 years. Among our study participants, there were 10 smokers (31.25%). Eight (25%) of them had occupational exposure while 2 (6.25%) had residential exposure to bladder cancer. Thirty (93.75%) presented with hematuria, 2 (6.25%) presented with recurrent urinary tract infections, and 1 (3.13%) presented with acute urinary colic. Nineteen (59.38%) of them were anemic, with 4 (12.5%) requiring blood transfusions. Twenty-seven (84.38%) of them had pedunculated tumors while 5 (15.62%) had sessile tumors. The tumor diameters ranged from 1 cm to 5 cm, with a mean diameter of 2.75 ± 1.22 cm. Complete resection was performed in 27 (84.38%) participants while partial resection was performed in 5 (15.62%) patients. The early single instillation of intravesical chemotherapy with mitomycin was performed in 8 (25%) patients. Only one (3.13%) patient had a postoperative complication, and seven (21.88%) patients experienced tumor recurrence and underwent a second TURBT. Two (6.25%) of the 32 patients died and 30 (93.75%) survived. Conclusion: TURBT is the gold standard method of managing bladder tumors. This procedure is at the same time diagnostic and therapeutic for tumors that do not invade the walls of the urinary bladder.

Study of Physicochemical Properties of Some Traditional Vegetables in Ivory Coast: Seeds of Beilschmiedia mannii(Lauraceae), Seeds of Irvingia gabonensis(Irvingiaceae) and Volvariella volvaceae

Samples of fresh Volvariella volvaceae, dry seeds of Irvingia gabonensis and dry seeds of Beilschmiedia mannii), three traditional vegetables found on the market in Abidjan were studied in relation to their nutrients composition (protein, fat, carbohydrates), energy value, moisture, ash and minerals (Ca, Na, K, Mg, Fe). The results show that: Volvariella vol- vaceae is mushroom distinguished by its high rate of moisture (81% ± 0.530% fresh matter), high carbohydrate content (79.440% ± 0.24% dry matter) and protein content (17.010% ± 0.04% dry matter) very significant. Mineral composition contains more Na (1.880% ± 0.02% dry matter) and K (1.260% ± 0.12% dry matter). Seed of Irvingia gabonensis is rich in lipid (63.610% ± 0.70% dry matter) but it also contains appreciable levels of carbohydrates (23.250% ± 0.17% dry matter), protein (7.230% ± 0. 80% dry matter) and mineral matter (5.910% ± 0, 30% dry matter). These seeds of Irvingia gabonensis contain more K (0.678% ± 0.01% dry matter) and Ca (0.452% ± 0.09% dry matter). Seed of Beil- schmiedia mannii is rich in carbohydrates (92.080% ± 1.20% dry matter), and has a significant protein content (7.160% ± 0.11% dry matter), its mineral composition contains more than K (0.872% ± 0.05% dry matter).

L’esame delle affinità reciproche dei taxa noti ha portato oltre che alla descrizione di una nuovaspecie e di tre nuovi sottogeneri anche a stabilire la sinonimia Muelleriella bonzanoi Casale, 1984 =Phaneropella (Epiroella) muelleriana Paoletti, 1975 el’attribuzione di Muelleriella epirota Giachino, 1989al genere Phaneropella (nov. comb.). Attualmente il genere risulta cosi articolato: subgen. ***, per P. lesinae Reitter, Epiroella n. subgen, per P. (E.) muelleriana Paoletti, P. (E.) epirota (Giachi-no), Hittitia n. subgen, per P. (H.) turcica Reitter e Uludagites n. subgen, per P. (U.) minuta n. ***, vengono discussi alcuni aspetti filetici e zoogeografici relativi alla 《linea filetica di Phaneropella》intesa in senso nuovo, formata cioè, per ora, da questo solo genere. Notes on the phyletic line of Phaneropella Jeannel, 1910 and description of three newsubgenera and one new species from Turkey.
