The integrable hungry Lotka-Volterra （hLV） system stands for a prey-predator model in mathematical biology. The discrete-time hLV （dhLV） system is derived from a time discretization of the hLV system. The solution to the dhLV system is known to be represented by using the Casorati determinant. In this paper, we show that if the entries of the Casorati determinant become an extended Fibonacci sequence at the initial discrete time, then those are also an extended Fibonacci sequence at any discrete time. In other words, the extended Fibonacci sequence always appears in the entries of the Casorati determinant under the time evolution of the dhLV system with suitable initial setting. We also show that one of the dhLV variables converges to the ratio of two successive extended Fibonacci numbers as the discrete time goes to infinity.

This paper deals with the vector control, including both the direct vector control(DVC) and the indirect vector control(Id VC),of induction motors. It is well known that the estimation of rotor flux plays a fundamental role in the DVC and the estimation of rotor resistance is vital in the slip compensation of the Id VC. In these estimations, the precision is significantly affected by the motor resistances. Therefore, online estimation of motor resistances is indispensable in *** a fast estimation of motor resistances, it is necessary to slow down the convergence rate of the current estimate. On the other hand, for a fast estimation of the rotor flux, it is necessary to speed up its convergence rate. It is very difficult to realize such a trade-off in convergence rates in a full order *** this paper, we propose to decouple the current observer from the flux observer so as to realize independent convergence rates. Then, the resistance estimation algorithm is applied to both DVC and Id VC. In particular, in the application to Id VC the flux observer needs not be used, which leads to a simpler structure. Meanwhile, independent convergence rates of current observer and flux observer yield an improved performance. A superior performance in the torque and flux responses in both cases is verified by numerous simulations.

The kidney plays quite an important role in the regulation of acid-base homeostasis. The dysfunction of renal acid-base regulation causes diseases such as developmental disorder, bone malformation, calcification of eye and brain, etc. In the kidney, this regulation is performed, to a considerable part, in the proximal tubule of the nephron. In the luminal side the key player is sodium-proton exchanger type 3 (NHE3), whereas sodium-bicarbonate cotransporter (NBCe1) plays the critical role in the basolateral side. In the cytoplasm there is carbonic anhydrase type 2 (CAII) that intermediates the conversion of CO2/ . Interestingly, in human, mutations have been found in NBCe1 and CAII but not in NHE3 so far. Mutations of NBCe1 lead to severe proximal renal tubular acidosis (pRTA) and other systemic manifestations. In animal model studies, however, the relative contribution of NHE3 to proximal tubule functions remains controversial. Recently, V-ATPase with renal specific subunits is suggested to have some roles in the regulation of proximal tubule functions. In this review, we will discuss the regulation of acid-base transport in the proximal tubule and the updates.

Mechanism of Pb Removal from Brass Scrap by Compound Separation Using Ca and NaF

The Mechanism of Pb removal from brass scrap by compound separation using Ca and NaF addition was investigated. Because large Ca-Pb compound particles formed by Ca addition rise to the surface of the molten brass, they can be skimmed off from the molten brass. However, fine Ca-Pb compound particles remain in the molten brass because of low buoyancy. By subsequent NaF addition, the reaction between Ca-Pb compound and NaF takes place at their contact regions, resulting in the formation of solid CaF2, liquid Pb and Na gas. Pb is mainly present at the Ca-Pb compound-CaF2 interface. CaF2 acts as a binder for aggregation of fine Ca-Pb compound particles, resulting in the formation of light and large composite compounds, which rise to the surface of the molten brass. A high Pb removal rate is achieved by skimming off.

Estimating harvest costs and projecting quantities of logging residues for small-scale forestry in Nasushiobara, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan

We used GIS on a regional scale to estimate and compare supply potentials and costs of small-scale logging systems, a mini-forwarder and a 4-ton truck operated by private logging contractors, and manual logging and a light truck operated by individual forest own- ers, with the mechanized operational system of the Forest Owners＇ Asso- ciation. Total potential yields of timber and logging residues were esti- mated as 418,895 m3 and 254,962 m3, respectively. The economic bal- ances were estimated and available amounts were projected as supply potentials from profitable sub-compartments. As a result, available amounts of timber and logging residues were estimated at 375,466 m3 （89.9%） and 203,850 m3 （80.0%）, respectively. Because their transport expenses were lower than for other systems the most profitable sub-compartments were operated by private logging contractors who sold logging residues at a plant. The profitable sub-compartments operated by individual forest owners were few because the extracting distances were usually greater than 20 m. Raising logging residue prices from 3,000 yen·m-3 to 4,080 yen·m-3 or 6,800 yen·m-3, and establishing forest roads, which reduced some extracting distances to less than 20 m, increased the number and area of profitable sub＊compartments, and increased available amounts of logging residues.

Biological removal of selenate in saline wastewater by activated sludge under alternating anoxic/oxic conditions

Selenium (Se)-containing industrial wastewater is often coupled with notable salinity. However, limited studies have examined biological treatment of Se-containing wastewater under high salinity conditions. In this study, a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) inoculated with activated sludge was applied to treat selenate in synthetic saline wastewater (3% w/v NaCl) supplemented with lactate as the carbon source. Start-up of the SBR was performed with addition of 1–5 mM of selenate under oxygen-limiting conditions, which succeeded in removing more than 99% of the soluble Se. Then, the treatment of 1 mM Se with cycle duration of 3 days was carried out under alternating anoxic/oxic conditions by adding aeration period after oxygen-limiting period. Although the SBR maintained soluble Se removal of above 97%, considerable amount of solid Se remained in the effluent as suspended solids and total Se removal fluctuated between about 40 and 80%. Surprisingly, the mass balance calculation found a considerable decrease of Se accumulated in the SBR when the aeration period was prolonged to 7 h, indicating very efficient Se biovolatilization. Furthermore, microbial community analysis suggested that various Se-reducing bacteria coordinately contributed to the removal of Se in the SBR and main contributors varied depending on the operational conditions. This study will offer implications for practical biological treatment of selenium in saline wastewater.

The biology of colorectal cancer differs according to its location within the large intestine.A report published in a previous issue of World Journal of Gastroenterology (November 2010) evaluated the importance of tumor location as a risk factor for lymph node metastasis in colorectal cancer,and showed that rectal cancer is prone to metastasize to lymph nodes as compared with colon ***,in order to conclude that the tumor location is independently associated with the occurrence of lymph node metastasis,it is necessary to consider a selection bias or other patientand tumorrelated factors carefully.
