Two-dimensional self-assembly of melem at pH-controlled aqueous solution-Au（111） interfaces has been investigated by electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy. In the solutions with pH 〉 pKbl of melem, two ordered self-assembled structures （honeycomb and close-packed structures） and one disordered fibrillar structure were observed as a function of the surface coverage ofmelem controlled by the electrode potential. In contrast, in the acidic solution with pH 〈 pKbl of melem, only the self-assembled honeycomb network was observed in a relatively wide potential range probably due to the presence of monoprotonated melem cations. Dots attrib- uted to counteranions were frequently observed in the pores of the honeycomb network. The lack of close-packed and fibrillar structures at low pH （〈 pKbl） is attributed to ionic repulsion of melemium cations.

Flow Visualization around a Double Wedge Airfoil Model with Focusing Schlieren System

In the present study, aerodynamic characteristics of the double wedge airfoil model were investigated in a transonic flow by using the shock tube as an intermittent wind tunnel. The driver and driven gases of the shock tube are dry air. The airfoil model of double wedge has the span of 58 mm, chord length c = 75 mm and its maximum thickness is 7.5 mm. The apex of the double wedge airfoil model is located on the 35% chord length from the leading edge. The range of hot gas Mach numbers are from 0.80 to 0.88, and the Reynolds numbers based on chord length are 3.11× 10^5- 3.49× 10^5, respectively. The flow visualizations were performed by the sharp focusing schlieren method which can visualize the three dimensional flow fields. The results show that the present system can visualize the transonic flowfield clearer than the previous system, and the shock wave profiles of the center of span in the test section are visualized

A design method of a negative refractive index for free surface water waves in deep water is presented. To obtain a condition of a negative index, an analogy between water waves in a water channel and electric waves in an electric circuit is employed. An analytical solution of waves around a periodic array of rectangular columns is obtained by a circuit analysis. Attention is not focused on columns but a space among columns, and then the space is regarded as the water channel. Therefore, the circuit analysis can be applied to water waves. One channel is treated as a unit structure and a number of channels are periodically cascaded as a network. The negative refraction and backward waves by a network of the water channels are shown. Since the negative refraction might occur even around simple periodic structures, it is meaningful to understand wave phenomenon around offshore structures and develop innovative technology.

Much interest has been devoted to organometallic NLO materials. We have become interested in exploring the utility of ferrocenyl group as the conjugating bridge. Thus, we synthesized 1-{{[1,3-(5-methylbenzo)dithiol]-2-yli- dene}methyl}-1’-[2-(p-nitrophenyl)-(E)-ethenyl]ferrocene (1). This new ferrocenyl compound has a donor and an acceptor group in 1,1’-positions. Investigations of the solvatochromic property of the compound revealed that it has polarized structure in a polar solvent, such as DMF. SHG efficiency of the compound was estimated by an SHEW (second-harmonic generation with the evanescent wave) method.

Therapeutic applications of curcumin for patients with pancreatic cancer

A number of preclinical studies have demonstrated anticancer effects for curcumin in various types of tumors, including pancreatic cancer. Curcumin has anticancer effects both alone and in combination with other anticancer drugs (e.g., gemcitabine, 5-fluorouracil, and oxaliplatin), and it has been shown to modulate a variety of molecular targets in preclinical models, with more than 30 molecular targets identified to date. Of these various molecules, NF-κB is thought to be one of the primary targets of curcumin activity. Based on these promising preclinical results, several research groups, including our own, have progressed to testing the anticancer effects of curcumin in clinical trials; however, the poor bioavailability of this agent has been the major challenge for its clinical application. Despite the ingestion of gram-level doses of curcumin, plasma curcumin levels remain at low (ng/mL) levels in patients, which is insufficient to yield the anticancer benefits of curcumin. This problem has been solved by the development of highly bioavailable forms of curcumin (THERACURMIN®), and higher plasma curcumin levels can now be achieved without increased toxicity in patients with pancreatic cancer. In this article, we review possible therapeutic applications of curcumin in patients with pancreatic cancer.

We discuss the Atiyah-Drinfeld-Hitchin-Manin （ADHM） construc- tion of U（N） instantons in noncommutative （NC） space and give some exact instanton solutions for various noncommutative settings. We also present a new formula which is crucial to show an origin of the instanton number for U（1） and to prove the one-to-one correspondence between moduli spaces of the noncommutative instantons and the ADHM data.

Finding the right balance between timber production and the management of forest-dependent wildlife species,present a difficult challenge for forest resource managers and policy makers in Okinawa,Japan.A possible explanation of this can be found in the unique nature of the forest management area which is populated with various kinds of rare and endangered *** issue has been brought to light as a result of the nomination of northern Okinawa Island in 2018 as a candidate for World Natural Heritage *** nomination has raised public awareness to the possibility of conflicting management objectives between timber extraction and the conservation of habitat for forest-dependent wildlife *** exclusively for one objective over the other may fail to meet the demand for both forest products and wildlife habitat,ultimately jeopardizing the stability of human and wildlife *** is therefore important to achieve a better balance between the objective of timber production and conservation of wildlife *** the significance of this subject area,current ongoing discussions on how to effectively manage for forest resources,often lack scientific basis to make sound judgement or evaluate tradeoffs between conflicting *** the effect of these forest management activities on wildlife habitat provides useful and important information needed to make forest management and policy *** this study we develop a spatial timber harvest scheduling model that incorporates habitat suitability index(HSI)models for the Okinawa Rail(Gallirallus okinawae),an endangered avian species found on Okinawa,*** illustrate how the proposed coupling model assembles spatial information,which ultimately aids the study of forest management effects on wildlife habitat,we apply these models to a forest area in Okinawa and conduct a simple simulation analysis.

First molecular genetic evidenee for automictic parthenogenesis in cockroaches

Parthenogenesis is an asexual mode of reproduction that plays an important role in the evolution of sex, sociality, and reproduction strategies in insects. Some species of cockroach exhibit thelytoky, a type of parthenogenesis in which female offspring are produced without fertilization. However, the cytological and genetic mecha? nisms of parthenogenesis in cockroaches are not well understood. Here we provide the first molecular genetic evidence that cockroaches can reproduce through automixis. Using the American cockroach Periplaneta aniericana, we performed microsatellite analysis to investigate the genetic relationship between parthenogenetically produced nymphs and the parent virgin females, and found that all parthenogenetic offspring were homozygous for autosomal microsatellite markers, whereas the female parents were heterozygous. In addition, flow cytometry analysis revealed that the parthenogenetic offspring were diploid. Taken together, our results demonstrate that P. americana exhibits automixis-type thelytoky, in which diploidy is restored by gamete duplication or terminal fusion. These findings highlight the unique reproduction strategies of cockroaches, which are more varied than was previously recognized.
