Electric power generation characteristics of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) piezoelectric ceramic have been examined during cyclic loading with different compressive strain value. A thin PZT ceramic plate attached to a thin brass plate was used. With an increasing compressive strain value in the PZT ceramic plate, the electric voltage increased, and the highest electric voltage was obtained for the sample with the high strain level (0.4%). The electric voltage decreased for the sample with more than 0.45% strain because of the failure in the PZT ceramic. The electric voltage was different depending on the strain condition, where the higher strain and the wider strain range (Δε) made the high electric voltage. Moreover, the electric voltage was attributed to the strain rate, where the higher strain rate made higher electric voltage due to high kinetic energy. The electric generation characteristics could be estimated with an operation of the strain value and strain ratio (εmin/εmax) especially for the sample loaded cyclically under the slow loading speed. This was affected by the linear correlation between the electric voltage and the strain value. Based upon the experimental work, suitable loading condition to make high electric voltage could be proposed.

In monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors,valley coherence degrades rapidly due to a combination of fast scattering and inter-valley exchange *** leads to a sub-picosecond valley coherence time,making coherent manipulation of exciton a highly challenging task Using monolayer MoS_(2) sandwiched between top and bottom graphene,here we demonstrate fully valley-coherent excitons by observing~100%degree of linear polarization in steady state *** is achieved in this unique design through a combined effect of(a)suppression in exchange interaction due to enhanced dielectric screening,(b)reduction in exciton lifetime due to a fast inter-layer transfer to graphene,and(c)operating in the motional narrowing *** disentangle the role of the key parameters affecting valley coherence by using a combination of calculation(solutions of Bethe-Salpeter and Maiallle-Silva-Sham equations)and a careful choice of design of experiments using four different stacks with systematic variation of screening and exciton *** the best of our knowledge,this is the first report in which the excitons are found to be valley coherent in the entire lifetime in monolayer semiconductors,allowing optical readout of valley coherence possible.

Socioeconomic and environmental losses caused by water erosion have highlighted the importance of quantifying and understanding the dynamics of soil redistribution in the landscape to develop effective soil management *** methods are applied to estimate erosion/deposition rates and identify sources of sediments,among them,the one that uses rare earth elements(REE)as a tracer stands ***,an alternative not yet explored that can benefit the accuracy of the estimates provided by the method is using a tracer containing a chemical signature composed of more than one *** present study aimed to evaluate the performance of a new water erosion tracer based on montmoril-lonite labeled with rare earth elements(La40-MMT).The innovative aspects of this La40-MMT tracer include its highly stable multi-chemical signature(Nd^(3+),La^(3+),and Pr^(3+)),which enhances tracer detection in the environment,and its low production cost due to the use of an industrial residue in the synthesis *** tracer was evaluated for a typical soil of the Cerrado biome,using a natural rainfall field-scale plot-NRFP(5 m × 20 m)and a physical predictive erosion model(WEPP).The results showed that the La40-MMT tracer could be used to estimate erosion/deposition rates,with agreement between the values observed with the tracer and the WEPP ***,this study confirmed the great potential of La40-MMT as a tool to identify patterns of soil redistribution at the field scale and aid in the validation of erosion models.

To downsize and lighten automatic transmission components, the gears installed must be strengthened in terms of pitting endurance and/or wear resistance. The most important metallurgical factor affecting fractures is well known to be resistance to softening when steel is tempered at approximately 573 K. Carbonitriding with a high amount of nitrogen is a very effective production technique because nitrogen increases the resistance during tempering. However, structural anomalies begin to appear in the surface layer when the nitrogen content exceeds 0.6 mass% in the chromium steel generally used. To address this, we have developed new high-strength chromium steel with an optimized chemical composition that effectively inhibits anomalies even when Carbonitriding with a nitrogen content of more than 0.6 mass%. We performed a drivetrain durability test on an automatic transmission component designed to have excellent contact fatigue strength and a tooth root bending impact and fatigue strength. We found that the developed steel that was carbonitrided with a content of about 0.9 mass%, and then shot peened hard, has a pitting life of roughly 4.5 times that of conventionally manufactured steel.

Alteration of Taste Acuity in Pediatric Cancer Patients after Treatment Completion: A Cross-Sectional Study Using a Filter-Paper Disc Method

Taste acuity of adult patients undergoing cancer treatment has been well investigated;however, studies of taste acuity after completion of cancer treatment are limited, particularly in children. This study aimed to assess taste acuity in pediatric cancer patients after treatment completion. Seventy-three patients who had completed cancer treatment (median age, 13 years;range, 7 - 18 years) and had not received any further treatment for at least 6 months were enrolled. Eighty-one healthy children (median age, 10 years;range, 8 - 19 years) served as controls. We determined the thresholds for four tastes (sweet, salty, sour, and bitter) using the filter-paper disc method. There was no significant difference in the thresholds of taste acuity for the four test solutions between the patient and control groups. The duration since treatment completion (<5 years vs. ≥5 years) had no significant impact on taste acuity for the four test solutions. The threshold for tasting salt was significantly higher in the group that had received chemotherapy + radiation and/or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation than that in the group that had received chemotherapy-only. Our results indicated that taste acuity after treatment completion in pediatric cancer patients was the same as that in healthy children. However, some treatment modalities were correlated with an impaired ability to taste salt. Gustatory test results should be considered while deciding nutritional support modalities after treatment completion in pediatric cancer patients.

Long-term submergence of non-methanogenic oxic upland field soils helps to develop the methanogenic archaeal community as revealed by pot and field experiments

The community structure of methanogenic archaea is relatively stable,i.e.,it is sustained at a high abundance with minimal changes in composition,in paddy field soils irrespective of submergence and *** contrast,the abundance in non-methanogenic oxic soils is much lower than that in paddy field *** study aimed to describe methanogenic archaeal community development following the long-term submergence of non-methanogenic oxic upland field soils in pot and field *** the pot experiment,a soil sample obtained from an upland field was incubated under submerged conditions for 275 *** samples periodically collected were subjected to culture-dependent most probable number(MPN)enumeration,polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis(PCR-DGGE)analysis of archaeal 16 S r RNA gene,and quantitative PCR analysis of the methyl-coenzyme M reductase alpha subunit gene(mcr A)of methanogenic *** abundance of methanogenic archaea increased from 102 to 103 cells g-1 dry soil and 104 to 107 copies of mcr A gene g-1 dry soil after *** no methanogenic archaeon was detected prior to incubation by the DGGE analysis,members from Methanocellales,Methanosarcinaceae,and Methanosaetaceae proliferated in the soils,and the community structure was relatively stable once *** the field experiment,the number of viable methanogenic archaea in a rice paddy field converted from meadow(reclaimed paddy field)was monitored by MPN enumeration over five annual cycles of field *** was also determined simultaneously in a paddy field where the plow layer soil from a farmer’s paddy field was dressed onto the meadow(dressed paddy field)and an upland crop field converted from the meadow(reclaimed upland field).The number of viable methanogenic archaea in the reclaimed paddy field was below the detection limit before the first cultivation of rice and in the reclaimed upland ***,the number gradually increased

The surface treatment is important for titanium and its alloys as promising candidates for dental implantation due to their bioinert *** surface samples were modified using H2O2 solution at different times up to 72 h to boost their *** to the results of the field emission scanning electron microscopy test,some nanostructures are formed on the surface of treated titanium samples and increased in size by increasing the time of treatment up to 24 *** 24 h of application,the sharpness of nanostructures decreased and the micro-cracks and discontinuity in the coating surface *** results of the X-ray diffraction study and Raman spectroscopy revealed that anatase(TiO2)was formed on the surface of treated titanium *** peak intensity of Raman spectroscopy increased with an improvement in treatment time of up to 24 h and then decreased due to the discontinuity of the *** wettability and ability to form apatite were reached at 6 h of *** is clear that the treatment time has a significant effect on the surface treatment of titanium using the H2O2 solution.

Recently, various control methods represented by proportional-integral-derivative （PID） control are used for robotic control. To cope with the requirements for high response and precision, advanced feedforward controllers such as gravity compensator, Coriolis/centrifugal force compensator and friction compensators have been built in the controller. Generally, it causes heavy computational load when calculating the compensating value within a short sampling period. In this paper, integrated recurrent neural networks are applied as a feedforward controller for PUMA560 manipulator. The feedforward controller works instead of gravity and Coriolis/centrifugal force compensators. In the learning process of the neural network by using back propagation algorithm, the learning coefficient and gain of sigmoid function are tuned intuitively and empirically according to teaching signals. The tuning is complicated because it is being conducted by trial and error. Especially, when the scale of teaching signal is large, the problem becomes crucial. To cope with the problem which concerns the learning performance, a simple and adaptive learning technique for large scale teaching signals is proposed. The learning techniques and control effectiveness are evaluated through simulations using the dynamic model of PUMA560 manipulator.
