The effects of phytophagous fishes on phytoplankton primary productivity in a freshwater pond , the importance of recycling of algae in fish feces .and the species specific interaction with phytoplanktons were studied . Phaeopigment amounts in pond water and in feces of fish were compared . The reduction of chlorophylla into phaeopigments in the process of passing through the phytophagous fish intestines was analyzed , and used for a direct comparison of the production rates of phytoplanktons before and after intestinal passage .

A novel Radio On Fiber(ROF) access is proposed and demonstrated which enables the pico-cell Base Station (BS) for high-speed wireless communications to eliminate external electric power supply facilities. We demonstrated 2.4-GHz band radio signal transmission through the BS without external electric power supply. The electrical power used for BS circuit is feeded by optical power over optical fiber from central station.

Carboplatin, a second-generation platinum chemotherapeutic drug, is considerably less ototoxic than cisplatin. While common laboratory species such as mice, guinea pigs and rats are highly resistant to carboplatin ototoxicity, the chinchilla stands out as highly susceptible. Moreover, carboplatin causes an unusual gradient of cell death in chinchillas. Moderate doses selectively damage type I spiral ganglion neurons (SGN) and inner hair cells (IHC) and the lesion tends to be relatively uniform along the length of the cochlea. Higher doses eventually damage outer hair cells (OHC), but the lesion follows the traditional gradient in which damage is more severe in the base than the apex. While carboplatin ototoxicity has been well documented in adult animals in vivo, little is known about its in vitro toxicity. To elucidate the ototoxic effects of carboplatin in vitro, we prepared cochlear and vestibular organotypic cultures from postnatal day 3 rats and adult chinchillas. Chinchilla cochlear and vestibular cultures were treated with carboplatin concentrations ranging from 50 μM to 10 mM for 48 h. Consistent with in vivo data, carboplatin selectively damaged IHC at low concentrations (50-100 μM). Surprisingly, IHC loss decreased at higher doses and IHC were intact at doses exceeding 500 μM. The mechanisms underlying this nonlinear response are unclear but could be related to a decrease in carboplatin uptake via active transport mechanisms (e.g., copper). Unlike the cochlea, the carboplatin dose-response function increased with dose with the highest dose destroying all chinchilla vestibular hair cells. Cochlear hair cells and auditory nerve fibers in rat cochlear organotypic cultures were unaffected by carboplatin concentrations <10 μM; however, the damage in OHC were more severe than IHC once the dose reached 100 μM. Suppression of stress and crack generation during picosecond laser processing in transparent brittle materials such as glass was successfully demonstrated by a picosecond laser pulse with temporal energy modulation. The origin of deterioration in processing accuracy could be interpreted in terms of the discontinuous movement of plasma in the vicinity of the focus. To reveal the effectiveness of the temporal energy modulation for smooth machining, such plasma motion was simulated by the finite-difference time-domain method. Furthermore, photoinduced birefringence was observed using a high-speed polarization camera.

Prolinamido-glycoside catalyzed asymmetric aldol reaction in aqueous media is reported. The reactions are rapid and highly stereoselective when water is used as solvent. The stereoselectivities were under influence of configurations of a prolyl residue of the catalyst and α-chiral aldehydes. Water soluble prolinamido-glycoside catalysts are easily separable from reaction mixture and can be recycled and re-used several times.

AIM:To examine the methylation status of the promoter region of the checkpoint with forkhead-associated and ring fi nger(CHFR) and microsatellite mutator status in 59 primary gastric ***:We investigated the promoter methylation of CHFR in 59 cases of gastric cancer using methylation-specifi c *** microsatellite loci were analyzed using high-intensity microsatellite analysis reported previously, and p53 gene mutations were investigated by direct ***:Twenty cases(33.9%) showed promoter methylation and no relation was observed with the clinicopathological *** found that the promoter methylation of CHFR was frequently accompanied with microsatellite instability(MIN).Seven of 20(35.0%) cases showed MIN in hypermethylation of the CHFR tumor, while three of 39(7.7%) cases showed MIN in the non-methylated CHFR tumor(P < 0.01).However, we failed to fi nd any relationship between CHFR methylation and p53 mutation ***:The coordinated loss of both the mitotic check point function and mismatch repair system suggests the potential to overcome the cell cycle check point, which may lead to an accumulation of ***, the p53 mutation was not related to hypermethylation of the CHFR promoter and MIN, which indicates that an abnormality in p53 occurs as an independent process from the mismatch repair deficiency in carcinogenesis.

Evaluation of GSMaP Daily Rainfall Satellite Data for Flood Monitoring: Case Study—Kyushu Japan

In this paper, the Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation Moving Vector with Kalman filter (GSMaP_MVK) was evaluated and corrected at daily time scales with a spatial resolution of 0.1°;latitude/longitude. The reference data came from thirty-four rain gauges on Kyushu Island, Japan. This study focused on the GSMaP_MVK’s ability to detect heavy rainfall patterns that may lead to flooding. Statistical analysis was used to evaluate the GSMaP_MVK data both quantitatively and qualitatively. The statistical analysis included the relative bias (B), the mean error (E), the Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient (CNS), the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and the correlation coefficient (r). In addition, Generalized Additive Models (GAMs) were used to conduct GSMaP_MVK data correction. The results of these analyses indicate that GSMaP_MVK data have lower values than observed data and may be significantly underestimated during heavy rainfall. By applying GAM to bias correction, GSMaP_MVK’s ability to detect heavy rainfall was improved. In addition, GAM for bias correction could effectively be applied for significant underestimates of GSMaP_ MVK (i.e., bias of more than 55%). GAM is a new approach to predict rainfall amount for flood and landslide monitoring of satellite base precipitation, especially in areas where rain gauge data are limited.
