Relationship between urinary cadmium and mortality in habitants of a cadmium-polluted area： a 22-year follow-up study in Japan

Background Several studies have suggested that the exposure to cadmium （Cd） increased mortalities from renal diseases, cardiovascular diseases and malignant neoplasm, including lung cancer and prostate cancer among inhabitants living in Cd-polluted areas and factory workers. This study aimed to assess the influence of environmental exposure to Cd on long term outcome of inhabitants living in an area polluted by Cd. Methods A 22-year follow-up study was conducted with 3119 inhabitants （1403 men and 1716 women） living in the Cd polluted Kakehashi River basin in Japan. The subjects were divided into 4 groups according to the amount of urinary Cd level （〈3.0 μg/g creatinine （Cr）, 3.0-4.9 μg/g Cr, 5.0-9.9 μg/g Cr, and -〉10.0 μg/g Cr）. Mortality was calculated by the person-years method. Hazards ratios （HR） and 95% confidence intervals （CI） were assessed by the Cox＇s proportional hazard model. Results Compared with urinary Cd 〈3.0 μg/g Cr group, the HR of 5.0-9.9μg/g Cr and 〉10.0 μg/g Cr groups were significantly increased after adjustment for age in both sexes： 1.24 （95% Cl 1.01-1.51） and 1.48 （95% CI 1.17-1.90） for men; 1.64 （95% CI 1.17-2.28） and 1.78 （95% Cl 1.27-2.50） for women. The most frequent cause of death was malignant neoplasm in men and cardiovascular diseases in women. The significant increase in mortality risk for cardiovascular diseases was observed in the subjects with 〉10 μg/g Cr in both sexes： 1.79 for men （95% Cl 1.02-3.12） and 2.38 for women （95% Cl 1.11-5.07）. When the subjects were divided into 2 categories （〈20μg/g Cr and 〉20 μg/g Cr）, the HR of the urinary Cd 〉20 μg/g Cr group for nephritis and nephrosis were 4.82 （95% Cl 1.07-21.61） in men and 7.92 （95% Cl 1.77-35.33） in women, respectively. The significant increase was not observed for malignant neoplasm. Conclusion These results suggest a dose-response relationship between Cd body burden and mortality for cardiovascular diseases, cerebrovascular diseases and nephritis and nephrosis.

The bimetallic Ru-M （M=Co,Fe,Ni,Mo, Rh,Cr, Mn） catalysts were prepared from SiO2-supported bimetallic carbonyl clusters, and it was found that the Ru-Co, Ru-Fe and Ru-Mo bimetallic carbonyl cluster-derived catalysts showed higher activity and selectivity for oxygenates such as C1-C5 alcohols in CO hydrogenation,in contrast to catalysts prepared from SiO2-supported homometallic Ru and Co carbonyl clusters. In situ FT-IR studies revealed that the bands at 1584 and 1555 cm-1 species were intermediates to produce methanol and higher oxygenates,and at higher temperatures the 1584 cm-1 species could react with alkyl to form 1555 cm-1 species. By the surface chemical reaction and the IR study of isotopic molecules,it was suggested that 1584 and 1555 cm-1 were assigned to surface formyl and acetyl species.

The 2004 Niigata-ken Chuetsu earthquake in Japan caused serious damage to sewage facilities such as uplift of manholes and settlement of pavement above backfill soil for *** paper deals with shake table tests in a 1 g gravity field on application of recycled materials for ground improvement to mitigation of liquefaction-induced flotation of manhole during *** recycled materials used in tests were tire chips made of waste tires and crushed gravels made of waste reinforced concrete,and they were packed in *** the test results,it was confirmed that the recycled materials packed in sandbags could be treated as one of the countermeasures to restrain the flotation of manholes and settlement of ground surrounded by sandbags.

We have developed a comprehensive software suite for bioinformatics research of cDNAs; it is aimed at rapid characterization of the features of genes and the proteins they code. Methods implemented include the detection of translation initia- tion and termination signals, statistical analysis of codon usage, comparative study of amino acid composition, comparative modeling of the structures of product proteins, prediction of alternative splice forms, and metabolic pathway reconstruction. A novel Radio On Fiber(ROF) access is proposed and demonstrated which enables the pico-cell Base Station (BS) for high-speed wireless communications to eliminate external electric power supply facilities. We demonstrated 2.4-GHz band radio signal transmission through the BS without external electric power supply. The electrical power used for BS circuit is feeded by optical power over optical fiber from central station.

Carboplatin, a second-generation platinum chemotherapeutic drug, is considerably less ototoxic than cisplatin. While common laboratory species such as mice, guinea pigs and rats are highly resistant to carboplatin ototoxicity, the chinchilla stands out as highly susceptible. Moreover, carboplatin causes an unusual gradient of cell death in chinchillas. Moderate doses selectively damage type I spiral ganglion neurons (SGN) and inner hair cells (IHC) and the lesion tends to be relatively uniform along the length of the cochlea. Higher doses eventually damage outer hair cells (OHC), but the lesion follows the traditional gradient in which damage is more severe in the base than the apex. While carboplatin ototoxicity has been well documented in adult animals in vivo, little is known about its in vitro toxicity. To elucidate the ototoxic effects of carboplatin in vitro, we prepared cochlear and vestibular organotypic cultures from postnatal day 3 rats and adult chinchillas. Chinchilla cochlear and vestibular cultures were treated with carboplatin concentrations ranging from 50 μM to 10 mM for 48 h. Consistent with in vivo data, carboplatin selectively damaged IHC at low concentrations (50-100 μM). Surprisingly, IHC loss decreased at higher doses and IHC were intact at doses exceeding 500 μM. The mechanisms underlying this nonlinear response are unclear but could be related to a decrease in carboplatin uptake via active transport mechanisms (e.g., copper). Unlike the cochlea, the carboplatin dose-response function increased with dose with the highest dose destroying all chinchilla vestibular hair cells. Cochlear hair cells and auditory nerve fibers in rat cochlear organotypic cultures were unaffected by carboplatin concentrations <10 μM; however, the damage in OHC were more severe than IHC once the dose reached 100 μM. AIM:To examine the methylation status of the promoter region of the checkpoint with forkhead-associated and ring fi nger(CHFR) and microsatellite mutator status in 59 primary gastric ***:We investigated the promoter methylation of CHFR in 59 cases of gastric cancer using methylation-specifi c *** microsatellite loci were analyzed using high-intensity microsatellite analysis reported previously, and p53 gene mutations were investigated by direct ***:Twenty cases(33.9%) showed promoter methylation and no relation was observed with the clinicopathological *** found that the promoter methylation of CHFR was frequently accompanied with microsatellite instability(MIN).Seven of 20(35.0%) cases showed MIN in hypermethylation of the CHFR tumor, while three of 39(7.7%) cases showed MIN in the non-methylated CHFR tumor(P < 0.01).However, we failed to fi nd any relationship between CHFR methylation and p53 mutation ***:The coordinated loss of both the mitotic check point function and mismatch repair system suggests the potential to overcome the cell cycle check point, which may lead to an accumulation of ***, the p53 mutation was not related to hypermethylation of the CHFR promoter and MIN, which indicates that an abnormality in p53 occurs as an independent process from the mismatch repair deficiency in carcinogenesis.
