Changes in choroidal thickness in healthy pediatric individuals: a longitudinal study

AIM： To investigate the changes in the choroidal thickness in healthy pediatric children in a longitudinal study, and to determine the ocular and systemic parameters that were significantly correlated with the changes in the choroidal thickness. METHODS： This study included 64 eyes of 34 healthy Japanese children with a mean age（±SD） of 4.4（±0.4）y（range, 3.6-5.8 y） at baseline. Swept-source optical coherence tomography（SS-OCT） was used to record images of the retina and choroid at the baseline and after a mean followup period of about 1.5 y. The 3 D raster scan protocol was used to construct the choroidal thickness map. Mean choroidal thickness was calculated for each of the nine sectors of the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study grid. Best-corrected visual acuity, axial length, body height, and weight were also measured. Changes in measurements were defined as the baseline values subtracted from the values at the final visit. A generalized estimating equation was used to eliminate the effect of within-subject intereye correlations. RESULTS： The mean central choroidal thickness was significantly reduced during the follow-up period（baseline, 301.8±8.6 μm; final visit, 286.6±8.0 μm, P〈0.001）. The decrease in the choroidal thickness was greatest in the central sector, followed by the sectors of the inner and outer rings. The inner and outer rings had diameters of 1 to 3 mm and 3 to 6 mm, respectively. The changes in the choroidal thickness in the central, inner ring, and outer ring sectors were significantly and negatively correlated with the age, baseline body height, baseline body weight, and elongation of the axial length. CONCLUSION： These results indicate that the choroidal thickness among preschool-aged Japanese children decreased significantly during the follow-up period. Correlation between catalytic activity of supported gold catalysts for carbon monoxide oxidation and metal–oxygen binding energy of the support metal oxides

The effect of a wide variety of metal oxide （MOx） supports has been discussed for CO oxidation on nanoparticulate gold catalysts. By using typical co‐precipitation and deposition–precipitation methods and under identical calcination conditions, supported gold catalysts were prepared on a wide variety of MOx supports, and the temperature for 50%conversion was measured to qualita‐tively evaluate the catalytic activities of these simple MOx and supported Au catalysts. Furthermore, the difference in these temperatures for the simple MOx compared to the supported Au catalysts is plotted against the metal–oxygen binding energies of the support MOx. A clear volcano‐like correla‐tion between the temperature difference and the metal–oxygen binding energies is observed. This correlation suggests that the use of MOx with appropriate metal–oxygen binding energies （300–500 kJ/atom O） greatly improves the catalytic activity of MOx by the deposition of Au NPs.

Giant primary angiosarcoma of the small intestine showing severe sepsis

Primary malignant tumors of the small intestine are rare, comprising less than 2% of all gastrointestinal tumors. An 85-year-old woman was admitted with fever of 40 °C and marked abdominal distension. Her medical history was unremarkable, but blood examination showed elevated inflammatory markers. Abdominal computed tomography showed a giant tumor with central necrosis, extending from the epigastrium to the pelvic cavity. Giant gastrointestinal stromal tumor of the small intestine communicating with the gastrointestinal tract or with superimposed infection was suspected. Because no improvement occurred in response to antibiotics, surgery was performed. Laparotomy revealed giant hemorrhagic tumor adherent to the small intestine and occupying the peritoneal cavity. The giant tumor was a solid tumor weighing 3490 g, measuring 24 cm × 17.5 cm × 18 cm and showing marked necrosis. Histologically, the tumor comprised spindle-shaped cells with anaplastic large nuclei. Immunohistochemical studies showed tumor cells positive for vimentin, CD31, and factor VIII-related antigen, but negative for c-kit and CD34. Angiosarcoma was diagnosed. Although no postoperative complications occurred, the patient experienced enlargement of multiple metastatic tumors in the abdominal cavity and died 42 d postoperatively. The prognosis of small intestinal angiosarcoma is very poor, even after volume-reducing palliative surgery.

The molar volumes and bulk moduli of CaSiO perovskite are calculated in the temperature range from 300 to 2800 K and the pressure range from 0 to 143 GPa using molecular dynamics simulations that employ the breathing shell model for oxygen and the quantum correction in addition to the conventional pairwise interatomic potential *** performance of five equations of state,i.e.,the Keane,the general ized-Rydberg,the Holzapfel,the Stacey-Rydberg,and the third-order Birch-Murnaghan equations of state are examined using these *** third-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state is found to have a clear tendency to overestimate the bulk modulus at very high *** Stacey-Rydberg equation of state degrades slightly at very high pressures along the low-temperature *** comparison,The Keane and the Holzapfel equations of state remain accurate in the whole temperature and pressure range considered in the present study.K’ derived from the Holzapfel equation of state also agrees best with that calculated independently from molecular dynamics *** adiabatic bulk moduli of CaSiO perovskite along lower mantle geotherms are further calculated using the Keane and the Mie-Gr(u|¨)neisen-Debye equations of *** are found to be constantly higher than those of the PREM by～5%,and also very similar to those of the MgSiO *** results support the view that CaSiO perovskite remains invisible in the Earth’s lower mantle.

Effects of Bacillus subtilis Var. Natto Products on Capillary Blood Flow in Healthy Subjects with Peripheral Coldness: A Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Randomized Parallel Study

Purpose: NKCP®, a natto-derived dietary food supplement whose main component is bacillopeptidase F produced by Bacillus subtilis var. natto, has antithrombotic, fibrinolytic, and pressure-lowering effects, and also is suggested to improve peripheral coldness. However, existing data are based on subjective evaluations with no scientific basis about the effects on peripheral coldness. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effectiveness of NKCP®for peripheral coldness by measuring changes in blood flow using a laser doppler rheometer and biochemical indices. Patients and Methods: This was a double-blind, randomized, controlled study of individuals aged 30 - 70 years who complained of subjective symptoms of cold hands and feet. They were randomly divided into the NKCP®group and the placebo group to receive NKCP®250 mg once daily and dextrin 250 mg as placebo once daily, respectively. The experiment lasted 8 weeks, with an intervention period of 4 weeks and a washout period of 4 weeks. Results: One-month intake of NKCP®significantly increased blood flow rate for 1 min between 4 and 5 minutes after the end of cold loading compared to that before feeding (p = 0.038). Also, analysis of the 5-minute blood flow rate before and after 4 weeks of feeding showed a significant improvement in the NKCP®group (p = 0.007), although there was no significant difference in the placebo group (p = 0.215). Furthermore, the 5-minute blood flow at 4 weeks after the end of feeding was significantly improved compared to that before feeding in the NKCP®group (p = 0.049). Therefore, the effect continued for at least 1 month after discontinuation of administration. Conclusions: It is possible that NKCP®intake effectively improves blood flow in subjects with peripheral coldness. Therefore, continuous intake of NKCP®is expected to reduce the symptoms of peripheral coldness. In the future, it needs to investigate whether the effect of increasing blood flo
