Histopathological validation of magnifying endoscopy for diagnosis of mixed-histological-type early gastric cancer

BACKGROUND The undifferentiated-type(UDT)component profoundly affects the clinical course of early gastric cancers(EGCs).However,an accurate preoperative diagnosis of the histological types is *** date,few studies have investigated whether the UDT component within mixed-histological-type(MT)EGCs can be recognized *** To clarify the histopathological characteristics of the endoscopically-resected MT EGCs for investigating whether the UDT component could be recognized *** This was a single-center retrospective ***,we attempted to clarify the histopathological characteristics of the endoscopically-resected MT EGCs with emphasis on the UDT *** examination investigated each lesion’s UDT component:(1)Whole mucosal layer occupation of the UDT component;(2)UDT component exposure to the surface of the mucosa;and(3)existence of a clear border between the differentiated-type and UDT ***,preoperative endoscopic images with magnifying endoscopy with narrowband imaging(ME-NBI)were examined to identify whether the endoscopic UDT component finding was recognizable within the area where it was present in the histopathological *** preoperative biopsy results and comparative relationships between endoscopic and histopathological findings were also *** In the histopathological examination,the whole mucosal layer occupation of the UDT component and exposure of the UDT component to the mucosal surface were observed in 67.3%(33/49)and 79.6%(39/49)of samples,respectively.A clear distinction of the border between the differentiated-type and UDT components could not be drawn in 65.3%(32/49)of MT *** the endoscopic examination,the preoperative endoscopic images showed that only 24.5%(12/49)of MT EGCs revealed the UDT component within the area where it was present *** UDT predominance was the single significant factor associated with the

Development of a novel endoscopic manipulation system: The Endoscopic operation robot

AIM: To develop and evaluate the endoscopic operation robot (EOR). The EOR is a robot system designed specifically for remote manipulation of the scope during gastrointestinal endoscopy by a seated endoscopist. METHODS: Total colonoscopy examinations using a colonoscopy training model were performed compared conventional insertion by manual manipulation and remote-controlled insertion, using the EOR. The author investigated the time taken for each of the 50 examinations. RESULTS: The median insertion time (in minutes) for each 10 examinations (EOR vs manual manipulation) was 73.70 ± 25.37 vs 3.77 ± 1.34 in the first group, 38.40 ± 6.24 vs 3.40 ± 0.97 in the second group, 27.6 ± 4.01 vs 2.70 ± 0.95 in the third group, 23.8 ± 3.65 vs 3.10 ± 0.88 in the fourth group, and 22.9 ± 5.02 vs 2.60 ± 1.08 in the fifth ***: The study suggested the possibility of the clinical application of the EOR.

Encrypted Sensing Based on Digital Holography for Fingerprint Images

We propose a novel biometric sensing technique for personal authentication in which fingerprint images are captured using an optical encryption method. This method can reduce the risk of data theft or leakage of personal information captured by biometric sensing. This method, termed encrypted sensing, is implemented using digital holography with double random phase encoding. We demonstrate experimentally that a fingerprint image can be captured as an optically encrypted image and can be restored correctly only when the correct cipher key is used. Moreover, we investigate experimentally the verification accuracy of the decrypted images.

Precise Control in Characteristics of Nano-particulate MFI-Type Ferrisilicate and Their Catalysis in the Conversion of Dimethyl Ether into Light Olefins

This study reports the synthesis of size-controlled Fe-MFI （Fe-substituted zeolites with the MFI topology） and their catalytic performances for DTO （dimethyl ether-to-olefins） reaction. The amount of HC1 and aging temperature were decisive factors to control the particle size of Fe-MFI in the range of 50 nm to 600 nm. The introduction of Fe3＋ ions into the zeolitic framework was confirmed by UV （ultraviolet）-visible spectroscopy. In addition, it was observed that the strength of acid site in prepared Fe-MFI was weaker than that of commercial ZSM-5. With decrease in the particle size, the amount of deposited coke decreased so that the catalyst life for the DTO reaction was well promoted. The present catalysts showed the higher light-olefin selectivity （C2= ＋ C3= ＋ C4=） than commercial ZSM-5 catalysts mainly due to the suppression of the formation of paraffins; however, the Fe-MFI catalysts were deactivated rapidly because of their low activity for the cracking of alkenes.

Assessment on Energy Self-Sufficiency Rate for Building Integrated Photovoltaics and Fuel Cell System in Japan

A building integrated photovoltaic (PV) and fuel cell (FC) system is proposed for assessment of the energy self-sufficiency rate in a city in Japan. The electricity consumed in the building is mainly supplied by solar panels, while the gap between the energy demand and supply is solved by the FC that is powered by the H2 produced by water electrolysis with surplus power of PV. A desktop case study of using the proposed system in Tsu city which is located in central part of Japan, has been conducted. The results found that the self-sufficiency rates of PV system to electricity demand of households (RPV) during the daytime in April and July are higher than those in January and October. The results also reveal that the self-sufficiency rate of FC system to the electricity demand (RFC) is 15% - 38% for the day when the mean amount of horizontal solar radiation is obtained in January, April, July and October. In addition, it is found the optimum tilt angle of solar panel installed on the roof of the buildings should be 0 degree, i.e., placed horizontally.

Impact of Heat Transfer Media on Performance of Solar-Hydrogen Power Generation

Solar-hydrogen system has great potential for contributing to sustainable and clean energy supply. The aim of this study is to clarify the impact of heat transfer media in solar collector such as methane, ammonium, hydrogen, air and water on the performance of solar-hydrogen system. After estimating the highest temperature attainable by each heat transfer media, the amount of thermal energy that could be saved in the production of hydrogen or preheat for power generation by fuel cell was calculated. The power generation performance of fuel cell using each heat transfer media was also investigated. As a result, it has been revealed that the temperature changes of methane, ammonium and air follow the horizontal solar radiation intensity irrespective of seasons, and their highest temperatures are almost the same among them. The temperature response of hydrogen is slower than methane, ammonium and air. This study defines the ratio of saving thermal energy which indicates the effect of solar thermal utilization for production of hydrogen or preheat for power generation by fuel cell without using utility gas. It has been found that the biggest thermal energy saving is obtained when hydrogen and air are used as the heat transfer media. The power generated by PEFC system per effective area of evacuated tube collector in the case of using methane or ammonium is 3.309×10-2 kWh/m2 and 2.076×10-2 kWh/m2, respectively, while it is 2.466×10-2 kWh in the case of using hydrogen and air.

Energy Characteristics of an Integrated Power Generation System with Photovoltaic and Fuel Cell

An integrated energy system (with photovoltaic (PV) and fuel cell (FC) for building) is proposed and assessed in term of its energy self-sufficiency rate in seven cities (Nagoya, Toyota, Tajimi, Takayama, Ogaki, Hamamatsu, Shizuoka) in Tokai region in Japan in this paper. In this work, it is considered that the electricity requirement of the building for household users is provided by a building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) system and the gap between the energy demand and BIPV supply is fulfilled by the FC. The FC is powered by the electrolytic H2 produced when PV power was in surplus. Based on the study of applying the proposed system in seven cities, which clarifies the effectiveness of the integrated BIPV, electrolytic H2 and FC power generation system, a universal system model has been developed in this paper. It has been observed that the monthly power production from BIPV as well as FC system are higher in spring and summer, while they are both lower in autumn and winter at all considered locations. The self-sufficiency rate of the FC system is higher with decreasing households’ number and it has been observed that 16 is the most appropriate number of households in a building, whose electricity demand could be fully covered by the integrated PV and FC system. Due to its climate condition, Hamamatsu is the best city in the region for installing the proposed system. The correlation between the households’ number and self-sufficiency rate of the FC system per solar PV installation area can be expressed by the regression curve in the form of y = ax-b well.

Nitric oxide induces heat shock protein 72 production and delayed protection against myocardial ischemia in rabbits via activating protein kinase C

Background Nitric oxide （NO） is a biologically active molecule which has been reported to protect the heart against ischemia and reperfusion injury in different species. This study aimed to test the hypothesis that nitric oxide may induce the expression of heat shock protein 72 （HSP72） which may protect the heart against ischemia.Methods Rabbits were given intravenous saline or S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine （SNAP）, a nitric oxide donor, or Zaprinast, an inhibitor of cyclic guanosine monophosphate （GMP）-phosphodiesterase, which may increase myocardial cyclic GMP content. Twenty-four hours later, the rabbits were either sampled to measure HSP72, or induced with a 30-minute coronary occlusion followed by a 120-minute reperfusion, and then the infarct size was measured. Meanwhile, chelerythrine （CHE, an inhibitor of protein kinase C） was given intravenously 5 minutes before SNAP injection and the effect on HSP72 expression and infarct size was determined.Results Twenty-four hours after pretreatment, immunoblotting showed HSP72 expression increased in the SNAP group compared with control groups, and this was blocked by CHE. Myocardial infarct size in the SNAP group was smaller than that of the control group （（32.4±5.8）% vs （51.1±4.7）%, P 〈0.05）. Pretreated with CHE abolished the infarct size-limiting effect of SNAP （（46.0±5.1）%）. Pretreatment with Zaprinast neither induced HSP72 expression nor reduced infarct size （（55.4±5.4）%）.Conclusion NO induced HSP72 expression and a delayed protection to the heart via the activities of protein kinase C by a cyclic GMP-independent pathway.

The Impact of a Heterogeneous Surface on Spatiotemporal Uncertainties of Sensible Heat, Latent Heat, and CO<sub>2</sub>Flux Measured over the Secondary Forest

The turbulent fluxes, such as sensible and latent heat fluxes and CO2 flux, are globally observed over various terrestrial areas in order to understand the interaction between biosphere and atmosphere. Although the turbulent flux observations are generally performed on a horizontally homogeneous surface, the spatial distribution of the soil moisture is not homogeneous even on cultivated land with homogeneous vegetation, indicating that the development of each plant would be different and that the plant physiology, such as photosynthesis and growth, would be heterogeneous. In this study, to clarify the impact of a heterogeneous surface on spatiotemporal uncertainty of turbulent fluxes, a simultaneous flux observation experiment was conducted at different heights (20 m and 30 m) above the ground surface in a secondary seasonal tropical forest located in the Tak Province, Thailand. We defined ε as the spatial uncertainty of the turbulent flow flux, as proposed by Kim et al. (2011b) [1], and observed that ε of CO2 flux was high, whereas ε of sensible and latent heat fluxes were low. This is likely to be caused by spatial uncertainty such as a heterogeneous surface. The CO2 environment was heterogeneous;however, sensible and latent heat environments were homogeneous because the source area received insolation uniformly. Therefore, the analytical results for the CO2 flux presented a different pattern from those exhibited by the analytical results of the latent and sensible heat fluxes.

ECA39 is a novel distant metastasis-related biomarker in colorectal cancer

AIM: To investigate the possible role of polysaccharide-K (PSK) -related markers in predicting distant metastasis and in the clinical outcome of colorectal cancer (CRC).METHODS: Firstly, we used protein microarrays to analyze the in vitro expression profiles of potential PSK-related markers in the human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line SW480, which carries a mutant p53 gene. Then, we investigated the clinical implications of these markers in the prognosis of CRC patients. RESULTS: ECA39, a direct target of c-Myc, was identi-fied as a candidate protein affected by the anti-metastat-ic effects of PSK. Immunohistochemistry revealed that ECA39 was expressed at significantly higher levels in tumor tissues with distant metastases compared to those without (P < 0.00001). Positive ECA39 expression was shown to be highly reliable for the prediction of distant metastases (sensitivity: 86.7%, specificity: 90%, posi-tive predictive value: 86.7%, negative predictive value: 90%). A significantly higher cumulative 5-yr disease free survival rate was observed in the ECA39-negative patient group (77.3%) compared with the ECA39-positive patient group (25.8%) (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that ECA39 is a dominant predictive factor for distant metastasis in pa-tients with advanced CRC and that its suppression by PSK might represent a useful application of immuno-therapy as part of a program of integrated medicine.
