Evaluating the Benefits of Platelet Rich-Fibrin in Periodontal Regeneration: A Literature Review

Introduction: Platelet Rich-Fibrin (PRF) is a biological matrix derived from a patient’s own blood, rich in growth factors and platelets. Its use in various periodontal and non-periodontal procedures is gaining recognition due to its potential in promoting tissue regeneration. The purpose of this review was to evaluate the benefits of using PRF in intra-bony defect regeneration, guided-bone regeneration, and sinus floor elevation. Methods: The study searched PubMed for manuscripts published between 2017 and 2022 to better understand the clinical and radiological effects of PRF. The manuscripts were divided into the following sections: intra-bony defect regeneration, guided-bone regeneration, and sinus floor elevation. Results: In intra-bony defects, PRF improved clinical and radiological parameters when compared with OFD alone, with a significant difference in wound healing at 7 days. In GBR, a CBCT evaluation shows no statistical difference between the PRF-autogenous bone complex group and the bovine bone-collagen membrane complex regarding volume change of the augmented bone with a 16% rate of bone loss following a 6-month healing period. Also, a slight increase in bone thickness has been seen when liquid PRF is used. In sinus floor elevation, results revealed no differences in graft volume between PRF group and control group at any of the evaluated time points. Although higher implant stability immediately postoperatively, higher new bone formation, the lesser amount of residual graft and earlier implant placement. Conclusion: Platelet Rich-Fibrin is widely accepted for use in periodontal surgery and dentistry due to its minimally invasive nature and low risk of adverse effects, with positive results in tissue regeneration. There is evidence that PRF leads to improved and faster healing, as well as cost-effective regenerative procedures compared to other treatments.

Uncertainty Analysis of Seepage-Induced Consolidation in a Fractured Porous Medium

Numerical modeling of seepage-induced consolidation process usually encounters significant uncertainty in the properties of geotechnical *** the effect of uncertain parameters on the performance variability of the seepage consolidation model is of critical importance to the simulation and tests of this *** this end,the uncertainty and sensitivity analyses are performed on a seepage consolidation model in a fractured porous medium using the Bayesian sparse polynomial chaos expansion(SPCE)*** uncertain parameters including Young’s modulus,Poisson’s ratio,and the permeability of the porous matrix,the permeability within the fracture,and Biot’s constant are *** SPCE models for displacement,flow velocity magnitude,and fluid pressure at several reference points are constructed to represent the input-output relationship of the numerical *** on these SPCE models,the total and first-order Sobol’indices are computed to quantify the contribution of each uncertain input parameter to the uncertainty of model *** results show that at different locations of the porous domain,the uncertain parameters show different effects on the output *** the beginning of the seepage consolidation process,the hydraulic parameters make major contributions to the uncertainty of the model *** the process progresses,the effect of hydraulic parameters decreases and is gradually surpassed by the mechanical *** work demonstrates the feasibility to apply Bayesian SPCE approach to the uncertainty and sensitivity analyses of seepage-induced consolidation problems and provides guidelines to the numerical modelling and experimental testing of such problems.

Checkpoint inhibitors in gastrointestinal cancers:Expectations and reality

Immune checkpoint inhibitors represent revolutionary anti-cancer agents, being rapidly approved in different malignancies and settings. Gastrointestinal(GI) cancers represent a wide variety of tumors with specific characteristics and different responses to various therapeutic alternatives; while some are chemosensitive others are chemo-resistant and only respond to more aggressive cytotoxic regimens, targeted therapies or a combination of both. Preliminary results of immune checkpoint inhibitors in some GI cancers are promising, namely in hepatocellular carcinoma, anal cancers and microsatellite instability high colorectal cancers. An impressive instead of a impressive number of immune checkpoint inhibitors are being evaluated in different indications in GI cancers as single agents or in combination with other agents. We reported in this paper ongoing and published trials evaluating immune checkpoint inhibitors in hepatocellular carcinoma and biliary tract cancers, esophageal, gastric, pancreatic, colorectal and anal cancers and we discussed the future perspectives of these agents in GI cancers.

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome(EDS) is a group of inherited connective tissue disorders caused by collagen synthesis defects. Several hemostatic abnormalities have been described in EDS patients that increase the bleeding tendencies of these patients. This case report illustrates a patient with an unusual presentation of a patient with type Ⅳ EDS, platelet δ-storage pool disease and factor Ⅴ Leiden mutation. Young woman having previous bilateral deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary emboli coexisting with ruptured splenic aneurysm and multiple other aneurysms now presented with myocardial infarction. Presence of factor Ⅴ Leiden mutation raises the possibility that the infarct was due to acute coronary thrombosis, although coronary artery aneurysm and dissection with myocardial infarction is known to occur in vascular type EDS. This is the first report in the medical literature of factor Ⅴ Leiden mutation in an EDS patient which made the management of our patient challenging with propensity to both bleeding and clotting.

Prostate-specific antigen doubling time and response to cabazitaxel in a hormone-resistant metastatic prostate cancer patient

We report a case of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer, who received prior treatment with docetaxel and was then given cabazitaxel as salvage therapy. The patient was monitored by prostate-specific antigen doubling time and prostate-specific antigen absolute value. The prostate-specific antigen doubling time was found to be a good response predictor in the patient.

Emergence of vancomycin-intermediate resistant Staphylococcus aureus in north of Palestine

Objective:This study was conducted to update the prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) isolates among human clinical *** isolates recovered from Northern Palestine,to evaluate the possible presence of vancomycin-Resistant ***(VRSA) and vancomycin- intermediate resistant *** strains(VISA) and to determine the antimicrobial susceptibilities of these clinical ***:The in vitro activities of 11 antibiotics against 204 non-duplicate *** isolates from clinical samples in North of Palestine were determined by the diskdiffusion *** samples were isolated between June 2006 and December *** minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of vancomycin for 115 methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) strains was carried out using the agar dilution ***:One hundred and fifteen(56.4%) of these isolates were MRSA and according to their antibiotic profile these are multidrug resistant(resistant to three or more non-p-lactam antibiotics). Ninety nine(43.6%) isolates were methicillin sensitive ***(MSSA),forty four of MSSA isolates(44.4%) were multidrug resistant,while forty five(45.6%) were non multidrug *** results showed that the most common resistance(95.6%) was to *** strains of MRSA have shown to be vancomycin- intermediate resistant,had MIC of 4μg/rnL and 8μg/mL and these vancomycin- intermediate resistant *** strains(VISA) are resistant to all antibiotics ***:According to our information this is the first study report about VISA in Palestine.

M2BPGi for assessing liver fibrosis in patients with hepatitis C treated with direct-acting antivirals

BACKGROUND Assessing liver fibrosis is important for predicting the efficacy of direct-acting antivirals(DAAs)and patient ***-invasive techniques to assess liver fibrosis are becoming ***,serum Mac-2 binding protein glycosylation isomer(M2BPGi)was identified as a non-invasive marker of liver *** To investigate the diagnostic accuracy of M2BPGi in assessing liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis C(CHC)treated with *** From December 2017 to August 2018,80 treatment-naive adult patients with CHC who were eligible for DAAs therapy were consecutively enrolled in this observational cohort *** 12 weeks,65 patients were treated with sofosbuvir/daclatasvir,and 15 patients were treated with sofosbuvir/daclatasvir and a weight-based dose of ribavirin at knowledge and technology association for hepatitis C management clinic,Cairo,*** measured serum M2BPGi levels,PAPAS index,fibrosis-4(FIB-4)score and liver stiffness measurements(LSM)at baseline and 12 weeks after the end of *** M2BPGi levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent *** All patients achieved sustained virologic response(SVR12)(100%).Serum M2BPGi levels,LSM,FIB-4 score and PAPAS index decreased significantly at SVR12(P<0.05).Serum M2BPGi levels correlated positively with LSM at baseline and SVR12(P<0.001).At baseline,compared with the FIB-4 score and PAPAS index,M2BPGi was the best marker to distinguish patients with grade F4 fibrosis(AUC=0.801,P<0.001),patients with grade F2 from grade F0-1 fibrosis(AUC=0.713,P=0.012),patients with grade F3-4 from grade F0-2 fibrosis(AUC=0.730,P<0.001),and patients with grade F2-4 from grade F0-1 fibrosis(AUC=0.763,P<0.001).At SVR12,M2BPGi had the greatest AUCs for differentiating patients with grade F4 fibrosis(AUC=0.844,P<0.001),patients with grade F3 from grade F0-2 fibrosis(AUC=0.893,P=0.002),patients with grade F3-4 from grade F0-2 fibrosis(AUC=0.891,P<0.001),and patients with grad

Acupuncture in living liver and kidney donors: a feasibility study

Objective: The purpose of this study was to test the feasibility of integrating acupuncture into the routine care of living liver and kidney donors during the process of donation and ***: This is a pilot study on the feasibility of a brief acupuncture intervention for living liver and kidney donors. Participants received acupuncture immediately prior to organ donation surgery, every day as inpatients, while recovering from donation, and at a 2-week follow-up. Prior to surgery, questionnaires were completed on acupuncture outcome expectations and the State–Trait Anxiety Inventory. After participating, those who received acupuncture provided feedback. Following the active intervention, a retrospective chart review was conducted, using donors who did not receive acupuncture as a comparison ***: Forty donor candidates were approached and recruited, 32 consented and ultimately 25 donors participated in the acupuncture intervention(15 of kidney, 10 of liver), 68% female, and 88% Caucasian;only one had prior experience with acupuncture. Participants received an average of 4 sessions while inpatient(range 2–8). Those who expected acupuncture to be more helpful prior to the intervention reported lower inpatient pain scores(P = 0.04). Qualitative feedback from patients was predominantly positive,indicating acupuncture was helpful for relaxation and pain. However, a few patients reported feeling overburdened during postdonation recovery, and that the study was viewed as additional ***: Preliminary findings suggest it is feasible to integrate acupuncture into inpatient recovery for living organ donation. Tailoring interventions to the specific needs of patients is important to address ongoing concerns. Larger studies are needed to further ascertain benefits of peri-operative acupuncture.
