We have utilized the relative intensity of magnesium lines originated from the Mg I at 285.2 nm and Mg II at 280.27, 279.55 nm to measure the plasma electron temperature. The plasma was produced via interaction of Nd:YAG laser with solid aluminum target contains traces of magnesium. The magnesium lines were found to suffer from optical thickness which manifests itself on the form of scattered points around the Saha-Boltzmann line. We have utilized a simple method used for rapid calculation to the amount of absorption to these lines via comparison of the electron densities as deduced from magnesium lines to that evaluated from the optically thin hydrogen Hα line at 656.27 nm appeared in the same spectra under the same condition. A correction to the magnesium spectral lines intensities was carried out;hence the corrected temperatures were re-evaluated. The measurements were repeated at different delay times ranging from 1 to 5 μsec. This work emphasizes on the importance of correcting the emitted spectral line intensity against the effect of self absorption before using them in the calculation of plasma electron temperature in laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) experiments.

Background: The use of intrauterine device alters the normal balance between vaginal flora. It might change cervicovaginal environment, which was suggested to increase the risk for vulvovaginitis. It was found that up to 85% of levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system users become amenorrheic 4 months after insertion, or bleed only sporadically. It was hypothesized that this would have a beneficial effect on vaginal flora maintaining normal balance. Objectives: The aim of this study was to detect the effect of hormonal intrauterine system (“Mirena”: 20 microgram/24 hours intrauterine delivery system Levonorgestrel) on vaginal flora by using pap smear before and 6 months after insertion. Study design: A prospective cohort study was carried out in a university maternity hospital. 210 subjects were included with pap smear taken at time of insertion of IUS “Mirena” and another one taken 6 months later to detect percentage of incidence of infection in IUS users. Vaginal flora was studied, and lactobacilli were graded according to Schr?der’s classification. A comparison was made to allow detection of changes in vaginal flora caused by presence of hormonal IUS “Mirena”. Results: Over half of cases (57.2%) showed worse vaginal flora after hormonal IUS “Mirena” insertion than before. There was a highly statistically significant difference between Schr?der’s Grades before and after insertion (P value < 0.001) as 44.8% of cases presented by Grade I, 44.4% of cases presented by grade IIa, 38% of cases presented by grade IIb before insertion developed Grade III after insertion. Conclusion: Insertion of hormonal IUS “Mirena” results in significant change in microbial flora towards pathological bacteria.

Background: Anemia is reported by many studies as an important risk factor for poor locoregional disease control and survival in head and neck carcinoma. We aimed to study the frequency and prognostic effect of low hemoglobin (Hb) level in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) before radiotherapy (RT) and/or chemoradiotherapy (CRT). Material and Methods: We retrospectively studied the charts of 86 patients diagnosed with laryngeal and hypopharyngeal SCC in a university hospital in Cairo, Egypt. Based on the World Health Organization (WHO), anemia was diagnosed in males at Hb levels 13 g/dl in 44/75 (58.7%). Tumor sites were larynx in 77 (89.5%) and hypopharynx in 9 (10.5%) patients. Disease stage 3, 4 was common in 59/86 (68.6%) patients. Thirty-six (41.8%) patients had surgery. 13/86 (15.1%) patients received induction chemotherapy, while 31/86 (36.0%) had concomitant chemoradiotherapy. Radiotherapy was given in 65/86 (75.58%) patients. The mean RT dose was 66 Gy. Non-anemic patients had significant higher inci-dence of complete response (CR) to treatment (p = 0.034). 25.8% of male pa-tients with Hb 13 g/dl (p = 0.403). Female patients whether anemic or non-anemic had no recurrence (p = 0.036 and p = 0.403 respectively). The median duration of DFS and OS was 6.52 and 9.33 months respectively. Magnetic alumina nano composite (MANC) was prepared for combination of the adsorption features of nano activated alumina with the magnetic properties of iron oxides to produce a nano magnetic adsorbent, which can be separated from the medium by a simple magnetic process after adsorption. MANC was characterized using XRD, SEM, TEM, EDX and surface area (BET). Quantum design SQUID magnetometer was used to study the magnetic measurement. The present study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of MANC for the removal of cadmium ions from aqueous solutions through batch adsorption technique. The effects of pH, adsorbent dose, temperature, contact time and initial Cd2+ concentration on cadmium ions adsorption were studied. Equilibrium data were fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherms. The equilibrium data were best represented by the Langmuir isotherm. The kinetic data were fitted to pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich and intraparticle diffusion models, and it was found to follow closely the pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic parameters were calculated for the Cd2+ ion-MANC system and the positive value of ΔH° showed that the adsorption was endothermic in nature. Furthermore, a single-stage batch adsorber was designed for the removal of Cd2+ ions by MANC based on the equilibrium data obtained.

Interplanting Some Soybean Cultivars with Mandarin Trees in Sandy Soil

Two-year field experiments were carried out at El-Kassasen Horticultural Research Station, Agricultural Research Center (ARC), Ismailia government, Egypt, during 2018 and 2019 summer seasons to evaluate some soybean cultivars for interplanting with mandarin trees to achieve high productivity of both crops, land usage and profitability under sandy soil conditions. The treatments were the combinations of two cropping systems (interplanting and solid cultures) and five soybean cultivars (Giza 21, Giza 22, Giza 35, Giza 82 and Giza 111). A strip plot design with three replications was used. Interplanting soybean cultivar Giza 22 with mandarin trees gave a higher total count of rhizobia in rhizosphere of mandarin roots after 75 days from soybean sowing than the other treatments in both seasons. The highest fruit weight and volume, total soluble solids (T.S.S.), fruit yields per tree and per ha were obtained by growing soybean cultivar Giza 22 or Giza 111 with mandarin compared with the other treatments in both seasons. With respect to soybean crop, interplanting soybean with mandarin trees decreased percentages of light intensity at the middle and bottom of the plant, chlorophylls a and b, as well as, plant dry weight after 75 days from soybean sowing compared with those of solid culture in both seasons. Soybean cultivars Giza 22 and Giza 82 had higher light intensity at the middle and bottom of the plant, as well as chlorophyll a, meanwhile soybean cultivars Giza 22 and Giza 111 had higher plant dry weight than the other soybean cultivars after 75 days from soybean sowing in both seasons. Soybean cultivar Giza 22 and Giza 111 had higher plant dry weight than the other soybean cultivars under interplanting and solid plantings in both seasons. Interplanting soybean with mandarin trees decreased soybean seed yield and its attributes compared with soybean solid culture in both seasons. Gastric cancer(GC) is a global health problem and a major cause of cancer-related death with high recurrence rates ranging from 25% to 40% for GC patients staging Ⅱ-Ⅳ. Unfortunately, while the majority of GC patients usually present with advanced tumor stage; there is still limited evidence-based therapeutic options. Current approach to GC management consists mainly of; endoscopy followed by, gastrectomy and chemotherapy or chemo-radiotherapy. Recent studies in GC have confirmed that it is a heterogeneous disease. Many molecular characterization studies have been performed in GC. Recent discoveries of the molecular pathways underlying the disease have opened the door to more personalized treatment and better predictable outcome. The identification of molecular markers is a useful tool for clinical managementin GC patients, assisting in diagnosis, evaluation of response to treatment and development of novel therapeutic modalities. While chemotherapeutic agents have certain physiological effects on the tumor cells, the prediction of the response is different from one type of tumor to the other. The specificity of molecular biomarkers is a principal feature driving their application in anticancer therapies. Here we are trying to focus on the role of molecular pathways of GC and well-established molecular markers that can guide the therapeutic management.

AIM To evaluate the evolution, trends in surgical approaches a n d r e c o n s t r u c t i o n t e c h n i q u e s, a n d i m p o r t a n t lessons learned from performing 1000 consecutive pancreaticoduodenectomies(PDs) for periampullary *** This is a retrospective review of the data of all patients who underwent PD for periampullary tumor during the period from January 1993 to April 2017. The data were categorized into three periods, including early period(1993-2002), middle period(2003-2012), and late period(2013-2017).RESULTS The frequency showed PD was increasingly performed after the year 2000. With time, elderly, cirrhotic and obese patients, as well as patients with uncinate process carcinoma and borderline tumor were increasingly selected for PD. The median operative time and postoperative hospital stay decreased significantly over the periods. Hospital mortality declined significantly, from 6.6% to 3.1%. Postoperative complications significantly decreased, from 40% to 27.9%. There was significant decrease in postoperative pancreatic fistula in the second 10 years, from 15% to 12.7%. There was a significant improvement in median survival and overall survival among the *** Surgical results of PD significantly improved, with mortality rate nearly reaching 3%. Pancreatic reconstruction following PD is still debatable. The survival rate was also improved but the rate of recurrence is still high, at 36.9%.

The Gabal marwa area is located in the southeastern part of Sinai,*** comprises gneisses and migmatites,granodiorites and ***,petrographic,mineralogic and chemical investigations indicated that the Gabal marwa granites are classified as granodiorites and *** monzogranites constitute the most predominant rock unit exposed in the study *** have been subjected to hydrothermal alterations,especially along the shear ***,desilicification,nametasomatism and development of spotty or dendritic manganese oxides are the most pronounced alteration *** alterations resulted in the increase of TiO2,Al2O3,FeOt,MnO,CaO,MgO,Na2O,K2O and Cr,Zr,Rb,Y and Sr and the decrease of SiO2,P2O5,Ni,Zn,Ba and *** studies indicated that the altered granites belong to high thorium,high uranium *** U,Th,U and Th,Th/U,Th and U-K variation diagrams suggested that magmatic processes controlled the distribution of these elements but the effect of hydrothermal alteration processes were clearly *** Scanning Electron Microscope and X-ray Diffraction analyses indicated that the most important radioactive minerals include uranothorite,thorite,zircon,monazite and *** and Mn minerals were also *** the U,Th,Ra and K activity concentrations obtained for all the studied granitic samples,radium equivalent activity(Raeq),external hazard index(Hex),and internal hazard index(Hin),were calculated to assess the radiation hazard to human beings living in dwellings made of the studied *** monzogranites have radioactivity above the proposed acceptable level and,therefore,caution must be taken when these granites are used as building materials.

Spectroscopic measurement of Stark broadening parameter of the 636.2 nm Zn I-line

In this article we will present an attempt to measure the Stark broadening parameter of the Zn I-line at 636.23 nm utilizing the optical emission spectroscopy (OES) technique, taking into consideration the possibility of existence of self absorption. This method is standing on comparison of the Lorentzian FWHM and spectral line intensity of the unknown Stark broadening parameter line (Zn I-636.23 nm—in our case) to a well known Stark parameter line (e.g. Zn I-lines at 472.2, 481 and 468 nm) at a reference electron density of 2.7 × 1017 cm-3 and temperature of 1 eV. We have utilized the emission spectral data acquired from well diagnosed plasma produced by the interaction of Nd: YAG laser at wavelength of 1064 nm with ZnO nanomaterial target in open air. The results indicates that the Stark broadening of the Zn I-line at 636.23 nm is centered at 5.06 ± 0.03 ? with a 25% uncertainty at the given reference plasma parameters. The knowledge of the Stark broadening parameter of the 636.23 nm line may be important in the diagnostics of the laser plasma experiments especially in the absence of the Hα-line.
