Background: Progressive insulin resistance (IR) is an important pathophysiologic mechanism of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Homeostatic model assessment (HOMA) is commonly used as a parameter of the severity of insulin resistance. Aims: To determine indices of insulin resistance (IR) and β-cell function in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted from March 2017 to September 2018 at Department of Endocrinology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh. The study was performed with 41 GDM and equal number of pregnant women with normal glucose tolerance (NGT) diagnosed on basis of WHO criterion-2013 during 24 - 40 weeks of gestation. Serum glucose was measured by glucose oxidase method and fasting serum insulin was measured by chemiluminescent immunoassay. Equations of homeostatic model assessment (HOMA) were used to calculate insulin indices like-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), β-cell function (HOMA-B) and insulin sensitivity (HOMA-%S). Data were analyzed and compared by statistical tests. Results: A total of eighty-two (82) subjects [41 women with GDM (age: 28.29 ± 3.79 years, BMI: 27.16 ± 4.13 kg/m2) and 41 women with NGT (age: 26.22 ± 5.13 years, BMI: 25.27 ± 3.01 kg/m2)] were included in this study. It was observed that GDM women were significantly older (p = 0.041) and had significantly higher BMI (p = 0.020) than pregnant women with NGT. The GDM group had significantly higher IR as indicated by higher fasting insulin value [GDM vs. NGT;10.19 (7.71 - 13.34) vs. 6.88 (5.88 - 8.47) μIU/ml, median (IQR);p = 0.001] and HOMA-IR [GDM vs. NGT;2.31 (1.73 - 3.15) vs. 1.42 (1.15 - 1.76), median (IQR);p β-cell secretory capacity [GDM vs. NGT;HOMA-B: 112.63 (83.52 - 143.93) vs. 128.60 (108.77 - 157.58), median (IQR);p = 0.04] and low insulin sensitivity [GDM vs. NGT;HOMA-%S: 43.29 (31.7

Applying organic amendment enriches nutrient status of municipal solid waste compost and its application enhances tuber yield and nutrient concentrations of potato

Elevated price of chemical fertilizers and poor nutrient content in conventional organic sources such as municipal solid waste(MSW)compost necessitate the production of nutrient enriched compost which could serve as a potential alternative organic fertilizer *** studied three types of amended compost that were prepared by mixing 20%mustard oil cake(MOC)and 30%poultry manure(PM)or cow dung or sugarcane press mud(SPM)with 50%MSW *** viride was inoculated into every type of *** rate of amended or unamended MSW compost application was 10 t ha^(−1).The use of different amendments improved the nutrient level of MSW compost,of which the N increment was remarkable,ranging from 1.14%N(unamended compost)to 2.9%–3.22%N depending on the types of amendment.A field experiment was conducted to evaluate performances of the amended MSW composts on the yield and nutrient content of potato(variety BARI Alu25).All compost treatments except the sole MSW compost treatment produced significantly higher tuber yields than the sole fertilizer *** press mud based MSW compost+fertilizer treatment produced the highest tuber yield of 31.6 t ha^(−1)(65%increase over 100%fertilizers and 57%increase over 100%compost treatment).The tuber N concentration varied from 0.128%to 0.594%,P from 0.018%to 0.035%,K from 0.213%to 0.313%and S from 0.020%to 0.053%,with the highest result recorded with press mud+fertilizer *** use of amended composts had residual effects on soil N,P,K and S ***,the treatment containing 50%fertilizer+50%compost mixture(MSW:MOC:SPM in a ratio of 5:2:3)performed the best followed by PM amended *** is concluded that integrated use of 10 t ha^(−1) organic amended MSW compost with chemical fertilizers can ensure higher crop yield,nutrient content and sustained soil fertility in nutrient-deficient sub-tropical soil.

A Comparative Study of Present Status of Marketing of Formalin Treated Fishes in Six Districts of Bangladesh

The fish is an important food stuff and source of protein all over the world. In Bangladesh, fisheries sector contributes a lot, in the case of the earning foreign currency and meeting domestic need of the animal proteins. To fulfill the domestic need of protein and fish, Bangladesh imports fish and fish products from the neighboring county. In many studies, it was proved that most of the imported fishes are contaminated with formalin, which is the highly hazardous and carcinogenic chemical. Information was collected from the fish retailers and consumers on the marketing of the formalin treated fishes through survey using prescribed questionnaire at 18 different fish markets in 6 different districts of Bangladesh. It was found that most of the commercially imported fishes are highly contaminated with formalin. On the other hand, local big fishes, such as rui (Lobeo Rohita), catla (Catla catla) and mrigal (Cirrhinus cirrhosus) etc., are also formalin contaminated partially, but not all the fishes. All the local small fishes are free from the formalin contamination. In this study, it was found that, among the 939 fish samples collected from the different fish markets of the six districts, 213 fishes (22.68%) were directly contaminated with formalin. The contamination rate is so much higher in the big city like Dhaka (36.78%) and lower in the small town like Jamalpur districts (13.33%). This study also indicated that, all the village markets were totally free from the formalin contamination. As the fish traders used formalin to increase the shelf life of the fishes, it was also observed that, the shelf life of the local fishes or formalin free fishes was much higher and the organoleptic characteristics were much more excellent than the formalin contaminated local or imported fishes. Burden of chronic illness and associated disabilities in Bangladesh:Evidence from the Household Income and Expenditure Survey

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the distribution of chronic illness and associated disability, out-of-pocket payment (OOPP), and other related factors using survey data from Bangladesh. Methods: This study analyzed Bangladesh Household Income and Expenditure Survey data that include socio-economic and demographic data, such as consumption, expenditures, and assets, along with information regarding chronic illness and disability. Multiple linear regression models were used to identify factors significantly associated with OOPP. Furthermore, a binary Logistic regression model was employed to assess the association of the explanatory variables with disability status. Results: A higher prevalence of chronic illness was found for those with chronic gastritis (18.70%), and 41.92%of the population had at least one side disability. The average OOPP healthcare expenditure for chronic illness was estimated to be US$7.59. Higher OOPP was found among the upper 2 wealth quintiles. Overall OOPP health expenditure was significantly higher among individuals with an associated disability (P<0.001). The likelihood of having an associated disability was higher among those individuals with a lower education level (OR=2.36, 95%CI:1.95-4.06), those who not earning an income (OR=2.85, 95%CI:2.53-3.21), those who did not seek care (OR=1.73, 95%CI:1.57-1.90), those who sought care from a pharmacy (OR=8.91, 95%CI:7.38-10.74), and those in the lowest wealth quintile (OR=7.21, 95%CI:6.41-8.12). Conclusions: The high OOPP illustrates the necessity of financial risk protection for the population at low socio-economic status. Therefore, we recommend that the government strengthen the healthcare system with appropriate support directed to the rural and elderly populations.

Assessment of Water Quality and Microbial Load of Dhaleshwari River Tangail, Bangladesh

The present study was undertaken to investigate some water quality parameters (pH, BOD, DO and water temperature), anion concentration (PO43- , SO42- and NO3- ) and the availability of some selected microorganisms consisted of total coliform, fecal coliform (Escherichia coli) and Vibrio cholerae in the Dhaleshwari river during the period from April to June 2015. The water samples were collected from three different stations of the river namely Belta (St-1), Kendua (St-2) and Charabari (St-3) under the Porabari union at Tangail Sadar Upazilla. Water temperature varied from 29.5 oC in June to 31.7 oC in May with a highest mean 31.17 ± 0.47 in May. The pH of water was slightly alkaline in nature and ranged between 7.25 in June and 8.45 in April. Mean concentrations of BOD 0.87 ± 0.19, 1.12 ± 0.6 and 0.97 ± 0.67 were recorded in April, May and June respectively. Highest PO42- value 4.4 mg/l was found in May and lowest value of PO42- 1.74 mg/l was found in June. Mean sulfate values at different months of Dhaleshwaririver were 6.61 ± 1.78 mg/l, 7.61 ± 2.16 mg/l and 3.68 ± 0.23 mg/l respectively. Nitrate concentration in water samples varied from 0.51 mg/l in June to 3.66 mg/l in April. Total coliforms bacteria were found high in all water samples and values ranged from 11.05 × 108 - 19 × 1023 cfu/ml. The highest load of total coliforms bacteria was recorded at St-2 in May and the lowest was at St-1 in April. The highest concentration of (Escherichia coli counted in water sample was 6 × 1013 cfu/ml at St-2 during June, while lowest concentration was 5 × 105 cfu/ml at St-1 during May. The highest concentration of Vibrio cholerae was 9.66 × 1014 cfu/ml at St-1 during June, while lowest concentration was 4.2 × 108 cfu/ml at St-3 during April. The high number of total coliform, Escherichia coli and Vibrio cholerae indicated significant level of microbial pollution in Dhaleshwari river. Composting Constraints and Prospects in Bangladesh: A Review

Composting is a suitable environment-friendly technique to modify organic waste to organic fertilizers and works as soil conditioners by regulating different biological processes. The main objective of a sustainable agricultural production system can be achieved by using quality compost and thereby improving soil health and increased crop yield. This desktop research summarizes the role of composting for sustainable agricultural development with their prospective role, opportunities, and challenges in the context of Bangladesh. Some attention is also given to the composting process and compost industries in Bangladesh. Benefits and constraints regarding the use of compost for achieving sustainable agricultural production systems are also discussed.

Prevalence and Resistance Pattern of <i>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</i>Isolated from Surface Water

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the most common pathogenic bacteria, frequently found in different environmental samples. The prevalence of multidrug resistant isolates has become an alarming concern for both patients and their surroundings. The present study was carried out to record prevalence of P. aeruginosa in surface water of Dhaka city and to screen their antibiotic resistance pattern. The study was also extended to typing of resistant isolates according to extended spectrum beta lactamase production. Hereby, Kirby-Bauer method was applied to test antibiotic sensitivity according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute. Then, the Ampicillin resistant isolates were screened for ESBL production by Double Disk Synergy Test (DDST). In these prospects, 52 water samples were tested, of which 32 were found positive for P. aeruginosa isolates. Hundred percent of the positive isolates were found to Ampicillin (AMP) resistant followed by 93.7% to both Tetracycline and Gentamycin and 71.8% to Co-triimoxazole. P. aeruginosa is completely susceptible to third generation antibiotics ciprofloxacin, Imipenem and Aztreonam followed by moderately susceptible to Polymyxin-B (78.2%) and Colistin (87.5%). According to DDST, all of the susceptible isolates were found positive for AMC type beta-lactamase production. It is evident from this study that the surface water is contaminated with antibiotic resistant P. aeruginosa and that through the water systems antibiotic resistance can be transferred to humans and animals. So, appropriate and rationale use of antibiotic should be applied to minimize the emergence of multidrug isolates to environment.

Garment washing is a significant area of the apparel industry. Washing is vital for denim and other casual garments for bringing some interesting washed-down effects. Unwashed condition does not exhibit customer’s desired look, but after washing, the same garment becomes prominent in improved appearance, softness, comfort, light and dark shade, and patchy look that creates customer’s absolute satisfaction. Garment washing process increases the appeal with a lucrative outlook brought about by mechanical or chemical treatments in dry or wet conditions. This study gives an indication of different types of washing processes and the change of physical and chemical properties due to application of wet and dry washing processes as an imparting desired effect on garments. The aim of the project is to find out the changes that occur in physical properties of denim when it is subjected to stone enzyme wash on 12-ounce, 10-ounce and 8-ounce denim pants. Three different shades, namely dark shade, medium shade and light wash, were taken into consideration. Different behaviors and properties of the garments were found in the physical properties of the samples.
