Aims Habitat connectivity is important in conservation since isolation can diminish the potential of a population for adaptation and increase its risk of ***,conservation of naturally patchy ecosystems such as peatlands has mainly focused on preserving specific sites with exceptional characteristics,neglecting the poten-tial interconnectivity between *** order to better under-stand plant dynamics within a peatland network,we assessed the effect of population isolation on genetic distinctiveness,phenotypic variations and germination rates using the peatland-obligate white-fringed orchid(Platanthera blephariglottis).Methods Fifteen phenotypic traits were measured for 24 individuals per pop-ulation(20 distinct populations,Quebec,Canada)and germination rates of nearly 20000 seeds were *** distinctiveness was quantified for 26 populations using single nucleotide polymor-phism markers obtained via a pooled genotyping-by-sequencing *** isolation was measured as the distance to the nearest population and as the number of populations occurring in concentric buffer zones(within a radius of 2,5 and 10 km)around the studied *** Findings All phenotypic traits showed significant differences among *** results also indicated a pattern of isolation-by-distance,which suggests that seed and/or pollen exchange is restricted ***,all phenotypic traits,as well as a reduced germination rate,were correlated with either geographic isolation or genetic *** conclude that geographic iso-lation likely restricts gene flow,which in turn may affect ***,it is imperative that conservation programs take into account the patchy nature of such ecosystems,rather than targeting a few specific sites with exceptional character for preservation.

Diabetes Mellitus and COVID-19 at the Bouake University Hospital Center (Côte d’Ivoire)

Context: COVID-19 is a global public health problem and diabetes mellitus is a poor prognostic factor for the disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiological, clinical and evolutionary characteristics of COVID-19 in diabetic patients in Bouaké. Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective study carried out from January 2021 to December 2022. We included patients with diabetes known before COVID-19 infection and having a positive COVID-19 RT-PCR. Data were analyzed with Epi info7 software. Results: Among 1122 infected patients, 71 patients (6.3%) were diabetic, the sex ratio was 1.3 and the mean age was 58.7 years. Type 2 diabetes (97.2%) was predominant and the average seniority was 3.1 years. Arterial hypertension (46.5%) was the main comorbidity. The main clinical signs were cough (69%), dyspnea (43.7%) and fever (23.9%). Oxygen saturation was Conclusion: Diabetes mellitus remains one of the most important comorbidities of severe Covid-19. The death rate of diabetics was high. Hence the need to vaccinate people living with diabetes.

The 4700 aB.P. volcanic signal detected in Vostok BH8 ice core, Antarctica

The detailed electrical conductivity measure- ment (ECM), trace chemical compositions and microparti- cles concentration analysis are performed for BH8 ice core from the depth of 126.0m to 130.0m at Vostok Station. At depth 128.7m, a volcanic signal 4726 a B.P. is detected. The volcanic sulphate flux is 95.8 kg·km?2, sulphate peak concen- tration 1352.8 ng·g?1, duration time about 10.1 years, com- parable with some well-known volcanic events. The results indicate that it seems to be a relatively large scale, long last- ing volcanic signal with farther volcanic origin.

AIM: To explore different effects of 12 beticolins, Cer-cospora beticola toxins, on ras-transformed adrenocorti-cal cell growth inhibition and their functional mechanism. METHODS: Beticolin-induced inhibition was measured with survival cell number determined by an automated photocolorimetric method. The penetration of beticolin was examined by confocal microscopy. Ras protein determined by Lowry method were separated by 14 % SDS-PAGE and electroblotted to Immobilon-P transfer membrane and detected with pan-Ras (Ab-3) monoclonal antibody. The Ca2+ chelation by beticolin was investigated using a calcium ionophore. RESULTS: Cell growth inhibition was found dose- and time-dependently at submicromolar level for beticolin-1, -2, and -13 (IC50 ≤250 nmol/L) and for beticolin-0, 6, and -11 (400 nmol/L ≤ IC50<500 nmol/L). Transient Hypogonadism Induced by SARS-CoV-2 during COVID-19 in Men Aged under 65 Years

Background: The presence of the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor, the main entry receptor for SARS-CoV-2 in lung alveolar tissue, in Sertoli and Leydig cells of the adult testis, may suggest possible testicular involvement during SARS-CoV-2 infection. Our aim was to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on gonadal function in men. Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive and analytical study in a population of men aged below 65 years of age with SARS-CoV-2. Not included in the study were any subjects on testosterone replacement therapy or with a known condition that could create hypogonadism. We recruited patients through a questionnaire and then performed total testosterone and SHBG analysis at 8 hours and 2 months post infection by ELISA. We used the Spearman Rho test for statistical analysis of correlations. The significance level was set at 0.05. Results: The sample consisted of 40 male COVID positive patients with a mean age of 46.4 ± 11.8 years. Eight patients were reviewed after infection. The mean total testosterone was 11 ng/ml ± 2.4 and the SHBG was 113 nmol/l ± 66.9 during infection. In the 8 patients reviewed after infection, median total testosterone decreased during infection (11 ng/ml) and increased after infection (12.7 ng/ml), this result was statistically significant (P = 0.028). Median SHBG during infection was increased (115.7 nmol/l) and after infection was decreased (82 nmol/l). There was a statistically significant (P = 0.04) and positive correlation between serum testosterone and SHBG levels in patients with severe infection. Conclusion: There could be a transient relative hypogonadism during SARS-CoV-2 infection, more marked in the severe forms of the disease with a tendency to improve after infection.

Epidemiological, Clinical, Therapeutic, Evolutionary and Prognostic Aspects of Children with COVID-19 in Bouaké(Côte d’Ivoire)

Context: Compared to adults, there are relatively few studies on pediatric COVID-19 due to the high rate of asymptomatic or paucisymptomatic forms. The aim of this study is to determine the epidemiological, clinical, therapeutic, evolutionary and prognostic aspects of COVID-19 infection in children. Patients and Methods: This was a prospective analytical study carried out from February 27, 2021 to January 27, 2022 at the COVID-19 Care Center of the Infectious and Tropical Diseases Department of the Bouaké University Teaching Hospital. The study population consisted of all children under the age of 16, seen in consultation and/or hospitalized with a positive COVID-19 RT-PCR. Data analysis was performed with Epi Info 7 software. The statistical tests used were the chi-square test and Fisher’s exact test depending on the conditions of validity with a significance threshold of p Results: Out of 955 patients received at the COVID-19 Care Center in Bouaké, there were 56 children (26 boys/30 girls), or, a prevalence of 5.86%. The mean age was 9.18 years ± 4.48 [extremes 3 months and 15 years]. Children over the age of 11 accounted for 48.21% of cases. They were contact cases in 35.71% and the contact person was the mother in 75% of cases. The main reasons for screening were cough (67.86%), fever (25%) and sneezing (21.43%). The pathological histories were asthma (83.33%), heart disease (33.33%) and sickle cell disease (16.67%). The medical examination revealed 6 cases of children in vital distress. The care consisted of home confinement for simple cases (89.29%) and hospitalization for cases presenting with vital distress (10.71%). The duration of confinement or hospitalization was between 10 and 15 days in 83.93% of cases. No cases of death were noted. Short-Term Effects of Liraglutide versus Vildagliptin on Insulin Secretion and Sensitivity in Type 2 Diabetes: A Single Blinded Randomized Controlled Trial (LIRAVIS Study)

Background: We aimed to evaluate the short-term metabolic effects of a GLP-1a, (liraglutide) versus a DPP-4i, (vildagliptin) in a group of sub-Saharan type 2 diabetes patients. Methods: We conducted a randomized controlled single blinded clinical trial in 14 uncontrolled type 2 diabetes patients (HbA1c ≥ 53 mmol/mol) with mean duration of diabetes of 8 [1 - 12] years and median age of 57 [49 - 61] years. Baseline treatment consisted of metformin in monotherapy or metformin plus sulfonylureas. Participants were randomly allocated to 2 groups of add-on 1.2 mg/day subcutaneous liraglutide in group 1 or 100 mg/day of oral vildagliptin in group 2 for 2 weeks. In all participants, insulin secretion in response to mixed meal tolerance test, insulin sensitivity by 80 mU/m2/min hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp, body composition, and lipid profile were measured before and after intervention. Results: At the end of intervention, insulin sensitivity remained unchanged both with liraglutide from 6.6 [4.2 - 7.9] to 6.9 [4.3 - 10.8] mg/kg/min;p = 0.61 and vildagliptin from 7.1 [5.3 - 9.0] to 6.5 [5.6 - 9.4] mg/kg/min (p = 0.86). The area under the C-peptide curve varied from 5.5 [1.0 - 10.9] to 14.9 [10.8 - 17.2] nmol/L/120min, p = 0.09 in group 1 and from 1.1 [0.5 - 14.1] to 13.0 [9.6 - 16.9] nmol/L/120min (p = 0.17) in group 2. LDL Cholesterol levels decreased significantly with liraglutide from 0.85 g/L [0.51 - 1.02] to 0.54 g/L [0.50 - 0.73] (p = 0.04) but not with Vildagliptin. Body weight tended to decrease in group 1 (−0.6 kg) versus modest increase in group 2 (+1.1 kg). Conclusion: Short-term metabolic effects of Liraglutide and Vildagliptin add-on therapy are comparable in sub-Saharan type 2 diabetes patients with a more favorable trend for Liraglutide on body weight, lipid profile, and insulin secretion.

Clinical, Psycho-Social and Metabolic Profile of Women with Hirsutism in Yaounde

Background: Hirsutism is a clinical situation in Cameroon which is poorly elucidated due to a paucity of clinical and biological data;hence our interest in this study. The aim of this work was to describe the clinical, psycho-social and metabolic profile of women with hirsutism in Yaoundé. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study carried out from May 2013 to December 2013. Participants were recruited by announcement through social media. Our study included women at least 18 years old, not in menopausal, not pregnant, not breastfeeding, with hirsutism regardless of severity. They were assessed through an interrogation, anthropometric parameters, a physical examination using the modified Ferriman and Gallwey score, the measurement of fasting capillary blood glucose and a lipid profile. The psycho-social assessment was carried out using a pre-designed questionnaire on the participant’s perception and daily experience with hirsutism. The metabolic syndrome was established according to the criteria of the International Diabetes Federation of 2005 and the National Cholesterol Education Program-third adult treatment panel of 2001. Results: We recruited 60 women aged 27.6 ± 7.0 years. The median Ferriman and Gallwey score was 12. The mean duration of evolution was 9 years. A family history of hirsutism was found in 88.8% of the participants, especially in the mother. Signs of virilization were found in 3.3% of the participants. Association was found between menstrual cycle abnormalities and severity of hirsutism (p = 0.023). Psycho-socially, 58.8% of women found hirsutism normal. The metabolic syndrome was found in 21.7% and 18.3% according to the IDF and NCEP-ATP III, respectively. Conclusion: Hirsutism in our context seems normal to most of our participants. It is, however, associated with menstrual irregularities, signs of virilization and metabolic syndrome. As a result, hirsutism merits further study on a large-scale with emphasis on etiology

Introduction: Children are likely to present with atypical and non-specific clinical manifestations of COVID-19, unlike adults. The aim of this observation is to identify the difficulties related to the diagnosis and the curative and preventive management of SARS-CoV-2 infection in children. Observation: This is a 15-month-old infant admitted for febrile seizures. The interrogation revealed signs evolving 48 hours before his admission marked by post-prandial vomiting, wet cough, hypotonia, food refusal, incessant crying, fever, and seizures. His antecedents can be summed up as an uneventful pre- and per-natal period, good eating habits, good psychomotor and staturo-ponderal development, and outdated vaccination. The physical and paraclinical examination made it possible to retain the diagnosis of severe pneumonia. The initial management consisted of oxygenation, hydroelectrolyte intake, antibiotic therapy, and neurosedation. The evolution 3 days later was marked by a worsening of the clinical features, and the hypothesis of infection with SARS-CoV-2 was raised. The nasopharyngeal swab for COVID-19 RT-PCR performed was positive. The infant was isolated in the intensive care unit, where he received oxygen therapy with a mask, enteral nutrition, antibiotic therapy, corticosteroid therapy, and adequate nursing. The evolution was favorable 48 hours later. In addition, his asymptomatic mother and 14-year-old brother were placed in isolation after a positive RT-PCR COVID-19 test. Her father who was very often away from home for professional reasons was negative for COVID-19 RT-PCR. They all four live in the same 3-room house. Conclusion: Childhood COVID-19 has many facets. Clinicians should think about it in the face of any infectious manifestation, in order to avoid delays in treatment and improve the prognosis.
