Getting physical with medical education:Exercise based virtual anatomy review classes for medical students

The benefits of regular physical activity are well ***,few studies have examined the effectiveness of integrating physical activity(PA)into curricula within a post-secondary *** investigate the incorporation of PA into medical curriculum,we developed a series of optional exercise-based review sessions designed to reinforce musculoskeletal(MsK)anatomy course *** synchronous sessions were co-taught by a group fitness instructor and an anatomy *** fitness instructor would lead students through both strength and yoga style exercises,while the anatomy instructor asked questions about relevant anatomical structures related to course material previously *** the sessions,participants were asked to evaluate the classes on their self-reported exam preparedness in improving MsK anatomy knowledge,PA levels,and mental *** participants completed surveys;a majority agreed that the classes increased understanding of MsK concepts(90.0%)and activity levels(97.7%).Many(70.0%)felt that the classes helped reduce *** majority of respondents(90.0%)agreed that the classes contributed to increased feelings of social ***,medical students saw benefit in PA based interventions to supplement MsK course *** with increasing activity levels and promoting health behaviours,integrating PA into medical curriculum may improve comprehension of learning material,alleviate stress and foster social connectivity among medical students.

The development of low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells(LT-sOFCs)is of significant importance for realizing the widespread application of *** has stimulated a substantial materials research effort in developing high oxide-ion conductivity in the electrolyte layer of *** this context,for the first time,a dielectric material,CaCu_(3)Ti_(4)O_(12)(CCTO)is designed for LT-sOFCs electrolyte application in this *** individual CCTO and its heterostructure materials with a p-type ni_(0.8)Co_(0.15)Al_(0.05)LiO_(2−δ)(nCAL)semiconductor are evaluated as alternative electrolytes in LT-sOFC at 450–550℃.The single cell with the individual CCTO electrolyte exhibits a power output of approximately 263 mW cm^(-2) and an open-circuit voltage(OCV)of 0.95 V at 550℃,while the cell with the CCTO–nCAL heterostructure electrolyte capably delivers an improved power output of approximately 605 mW cm^(-2) along with a higher OCV over 1.0 V,which indicates the introduction of high hole-conducting nCAL into the CCTO could enhance the cell performance rather than inducing any potential short-circuiting *** is found that these promising outcomes are due to the interplay of the dielectric material,its structure,and overall properties that led to improve electrochemical mechanism in CCTO–***,density functional theory calculations provide the detailed information about the electronic and structural properties of the CCTO and nCAL and their heterostructure CCTO–*** study thus provides a new approach for developing new advanced electrolytes for LT-sOFCs.

Vox Link—Combining sparse volumetric data and geometry for efficient rendering

Processing and visualizing large scale volumetric and geometric datasets is mission critical in an increasing number of applications in academic research as well as in commercial enterprise. Often the datasets are, or can be processed to become, *** this paper, we present Vox Link, a novel approach to render sparse volume data in a memory-efficient manner enabling interactive rendering on common, offthe-shelf graphics hardware. Our approach utilizes current GPU architectures for voxelizing, storing, and visualizing such datasets. It is based on the idea of perpixel linked lists(pp LL), an A-buffer implementation for order-independent transparency rendering. The method supports voxelization and rendering of dense semi-transparent geometry, sparse volume data, and implicit surface representations with a unified data structure. The proposed data structure also enables efficient simulation of global lighting effects such as reflection, refraction, and shadow ray evaluation.

Living in a High Mountain Border Region:the Case of the'Bhotiyas'of the Indo-Chinese Border Region

This article introduces one of south Asia's most important border regions into academic discourse, namely, the Central Himalayan mountain rim separating India and the Tibetan Autonomous Region (People's Republic of China). What makes this border region so interesting is a tangled interplay of changing environmental, cultural, and political forms to which the local populations constantly have to adapt in order to make a living there. We focused on the so-called 'Bhotiyas' of Uttarakhand, former trans-Himalayan traders whose ethnicity and livelihood was traditionally associated with the Indo-Chinese border that was sealed as a result of the India-China war in 1962. Drawing on the work of borderland scholarship, we identified the key processes and developments that changed the perspective of this area. Competing political aspirations as well as the 'Bhotiyas' countervailing strategies were considered equally important for understanding local livelihoods and identities within the dynamics of a 'high mountain border region'. Through an exemplary analysis of historical differences of power in one 'Bhotiya' valley, we further explored the ways in which shifting socio-spatial constellations are creatively re-interpreted by the borderlanders.

GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure nanowires studied by cathodoluminescence

In this report we explore the structural and optical properties of GaAs/A1GaAs heterostructure nanowires grown by metalorganic vapour phase epitaxy using gold seed-particles. The optical studies were done by low-temperature cathodo- luminescence （CL） in a scanning electron microscope （sEM）. We perform a systematic investigation of how the nanowire growth-temperature affects the total photon emission, and variations in the emission energy and intensity along the length of the nanowires. The morphology and crystal structures of the nanowires were investigated using sEM and transmission electron microscopy （TEM）. In order to correlate specific photon emission characteristics with variations in the nanowire crystal structure directly, TEM and spatially resolved CL measurements were performed on the same individual nanowires. We found that the main emission energy was located at around 1.48 eV, and that the emission intensity was greatly enhanced when increasing the GaAs nanowire core growth temperature. The data strongly suggests that this emission energy is related to rotational twins in the GaAs nanowire core. Our measurements also show that radial overgrowth by GaAs on the GaAs nanowire core can have a deteriorating effect on the optical quality of the nanowires. Finally, we conclude that an in situ pre-growth annealing step at a sufficiently high temperature significantly improves the optical quality of the nanowires.

Engineering of immunoinstructive extracellular matrices for enhanced osteoinductivity

The increasing recognition of the contribution of the immune system to activate and prime regeneration implies that tissue engineering strategies and biomaterials design should target regulation of early immunological *** previously proposed the cell-based engineering and devitalization of extracellular matrices(ECMs)as a strategy to generate implant materials delivering custom-defined ***,in the context of bone regeneration,we aimed at enhancing the osteoinductivity of such ECMs by enriching their immunomodulatory factors *** with IL1βa cell line overexpressing BMP-2 enabled engineering of ECMs preserving osteoinductive signals and containing larger amounts of angiogenic(VEGF)and pro-inflammatory molecules(IL6,IL8 and MCP1).Upon implantation,these IL1β-induced materials enhanced processes typical of the inflammatory phase(e.g.,vascular invasion,osteoclast recruitment and differentiation),leading to‘regenerative’events(e.g.,M2 macrophage polarization)and ultimately resulting in faster and more efficient bone *** results bear relevance towards the manufacturing of potent off-the-shelf osteoinductive materials and outline the broader paradigm of engineering immunoinstructive implants to enhance tissue regeneration.
