Assessing global Sentinel-2 coverage dynamics and data availability for operational Earth observation(EO)applications using the EO-Compass

Sentinel-2 scenes are increasingly being used in operational Earth observation(EO)applications at regional,continental and global scales,in near-real time applications,and with multi-temporal *** a broader scale,they are therefore one of the most important facilitators of the Digital ***,the data quality and availability are not spatially and temporally homogeneous due to effects related to cloudiness,the position on the Earth or the acquisition *** spatiotemporal inhomogeneity of the underlying data may therefore affect any big remote sensing analysis and is important to *** study presents an assessment of the metadata for all accessible Sentinel-2 Level-1C scenes acquired in 2017,enabling the spatio-temporal coverage and availability to be quantified,including scene availability and *** exploratory analysis of the global,multi-temporal metadata also reveals that higher acquisition frequencies do not necessarily yield more cloud-free scenes and exposes metadata quality issues,*** incorrect cloud cover estimation in high,nonvegetated *** continuously updated datasets and analysis results are accessible as a Web application called *** contributes to a better understanding and selection of Sentinel-2 scenes,and improves the planning and interpretation of remote sensing analyses.

Shorelines are vulnerable to anthropogenic activities including urbanization,land reclamation and sediment *** changes may be a reflection of the degradation of coastal ecosystems because of human *** the shoreline dynamics is,therefore,a topic of global *** observation data,such as multi-temporal satellite images,are an important resource for assessing changes in coastal *** this research,we used Google Earth Engine(GEE)to monitor and map historical shoreline dynamics in the Hangzhou Bay in China where the Qiantang River flows into the East China ***,we aimed to capture and quantify both the spatial and temporal shoreline changes and to assess the link between anthropogenic activities and shoreline changes on the integrity of this coastal *** implemented a Tasselled Cap analysis(TCA)on Landsat imagery from 1985 to 2018 in GEE to calculate the wetness *** then applied Otsu method for automatic image thresholding on the wetness coefficient to detect waterbodies and shoreline ***,we adopted the nighttime light data from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program’s Operational Linescan System(DMSP-OLS)from 1992 to 2013 as a proxy of human *** results show that in the hotspot areas,the shoreline has moved by more than 5 km in the last decades,accounting for approximately 900 km^(2) of land *** this area,the human activity,indicated by the intensity of nighttime light,increased *** results of this work reveal the influence of human activities on the shoreline dynamics and can support policies that promote the sustainable use and conservation of coastal *** methodology can be transferred and applied to other coastal zones in various regions and scaled up to larger areas.

The technological landscape for managing big Earth observation(EO)data ranges from global solutions on large cloud infrastructures with web-based access to self-hosted *** data cubes are a leading technology for facilitating big EO data analysis and can be deployed on different spatial scales:local,national,regional,or *** EO data cubes with a geographic focus(“local EO data cubes”)have been ***,their alignment with the Digital Earth(DE)vision and the benefits and trade-offs in creating and maintaining them ought to be further *** investigate local EO data cubes from five perspectives(science,business and industry,government and policy,education,communities and citizens)and illustrate four examples covering three continents at different geographic scales(Swiss Data Cube,semantic EO data cube for Austria,DE Africa,Virginia Data Cube).A local EO data cube can benefit many stakeholders and players but requires several technical *** developments include enabling local EO data cubes based on public,global,and cloud-native EO data streaming and interoperability between local EO data *** argue that blurring the dichotomy between global and local aligns with the DE vision to access the world’s knowledge and explore information about the planet.
