Getting physical with medical education:Exercise based virtual anatomy review classes for medical students

The benefits of regular physical activity are well ***,few studies have examined the effectiveness of integrating physical activity(PA)into curricula within a post-secondary *** investigate the incorporation of PA into medical curriculum,we developed a series of optional exercise-based review sessions designed to reinforce musculoskeletal(MSK)anatomy course *** synchronous sessions were co-taught by a group fitness instructor and an anatomy *** fitness instructor would lead students through both strength and yoga style exercises,while the anatomy instructor asked questions about relevant anatomical structures related to course material previously *** the sessions,participants were asked to evaluate the classes on their self-reported exam preparedness in improving MSK anatomy knowledge,PA levels,and mental *** participants completed surveys;a majority agreed that the classes increased understanding of MSK concepts(90.0%)and activity levels(97.7%).Many(70.0%)felt that the classes helped reduce *** majority of respondents(90.0%)agreed that the classes contributed to increased feelings of social ***,medical students saw benefit in PA based interventions to supplement MSK course *** with increasing activity levels and promoting health behaviours,integrating PA into medical curriculum may improve comprehension of learning material,alleviate stress and foster social connectivity among medical students.

Fractal analysis of canopy architectures of Acacia angustissima, Gliricidia sepium, and leucaena collinsii for estimation of aboveground biomass in a short rotation forest in eastern Zambia

A study was conducted at Msekera Regional Agricultural Research Station in eastern Zambia to （1） describe canopy branching properties of Acacia angustissima, Gliricidia sepium and leucaena collinsii in short rotation forests, （2） test the existence of self similarity from repeated iteration of a structural unit in tree canopies, （3） examined intra-specifie relationships between functional branching characteristics, and （4） determine whether allometric equations for relating aboveground tree biomass to fractal properties could accurately predict aboveground biomass. Measurements of basal diameter （Din0） at 10em aboveground and total height （H）, and aboveground biomass of 27 trees were taken, but only nine trees representative of variability of the stand and the three species were processed for functional branching analyses （FBA） of the shoot systems. For each species, fractal properties of three trees, includ- ing fractal dimension （Dfract）, bifurcation ratios （p） and proportionality ratios （q） of branching points were assessed. The slope of the linear re- gression ofp on proximal diameter was not significantly different （P 〈 0.01） from zero and hence the assumption that p is independent of scale, a pre-requisite for use of fraetal branching rules to describe a fraetal tree canopy, was fulfilled at branching orders with link diameters 〉1.5 cm. The proportionality ration q for branching patterns of all tree species was constant at all scales. The proportion of q values 〉0.9 （fq） was 0.8 for all species. Mean fraetal dimension （Df^ct） values （1.5-1.7） for all species showed that branching patterns had an increasing magnitude of intricacy. Since Dfraet values were 〉1.5, branching patterns within species were self similar. Basal diameter （D10）, proximal diameter and Dfraet described most of variations in aboveground biomass, suggesting that allometric equa- tions for relating aboveground tree biomass to fractal properties could accurately predict aboveground biomass. Time trends and outcomes of gastrostomy placement in a Swedish national cohort over two decades

Electrochemistry of samarium in lithium-beryllium fluoride salt mixture

The electrochemical behaviour of samarium was investigated in liF-BeF2 system on an inert （Mo） electrode by cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry at 804, 833, 847 and 872 K. Redox process Sm3＋＋e–→Sm2＋ was recognized and analysed. Cyclic voltammetry data suggested that at potential sweep rates lower than 0.25 V/s, the reduction was limited by the diffusion of Sm3＋ ions. It was not possible to observe reduction process of Sm2＋＋2e–→Sm0 due to insufficient electrochemical stability of liF-BeF2. Diffusion coefficients of Sm3＋ ions in liF-BeF2 were calculated from voltammetric and chronopotentiometric data in the temperature range 804–872 K. Diffusion coefficient values obeyed Arrhenius law. Activation energy was calculated to be 102.5 kJ/mol.

Assessing volcanic origins within detrital zircon populations——A case study from the Mesozoic non-volcanic margin of southern Australia

Detrital zircon U/Pb geochronology is a common tool used to resolve stratigraphic questions,inform basin evolution and constrain regional geological *** favourable circumstances,detrital zircon populations can contain a concomitant volcanic contribution that provides constraints on the age of ***,for non-volcanic settings,proving isolated detrital zircon grains are from contemporaneous and potentially remote volcanism is *** we use same grain(U-Th)/He thermochronology coupled with U/Pb geochronology to identify detrital zircon grains of contemporary volcanic origin.(U-Th)/He ages from Cretaceous zircon grains in southern Australia define a single population with a weighted mean age of 104±6.1 *** from zircon U/Pb geochronology and palynology(~104.0-107.5 Ma).Detrital zircon trace-element geochemistry is consistent with a continental signature for parent rocks and coupled with detrital grain ages,supports derivation from a>2000 km distant early-to mid-Cretaceous Whitsunday Volcanic Province in eastern ***,integration of biostratigraphy,single-grain zircon double-dating(geochronology and thermochronology)and grain geochemistry enhances fingerprinting of zircon source region and transport history.A distal volcanic source and rapid continental-scale transport to southern Australia is supported here.

Open cut resource optimisation as applied to coal

Pit optimisation is the earliest and most established application of its kind in the minerals industry, but this has been primarily driven by metal, not coal. Coal has the same financial drivers for resource optimisation as does the metalliferous industry, yet pit optimisation is not common practice. Why？ The following discussion presents the basics of pit optimisation as they relate to coal and illustrates how a technology developed for massive deposits is not suitable for thin, multi-seam deposits where mine planning is often driven more by product quality than by value drivers such as Net Present Value. An alternative methodology is presented that takes advantage of the data structure of bedded deposits to optimise resource recovery in terms of a production schedule that meets constraints on coal quality.

Environmental chemical stressors as epigenome modifiers:a new horizon in assessment of toxicological effects

In eukaryotic cells, chromatin transformation from euchromatin into heterochromatin as a means of controlling gene expression and replication has been known as the ‘‘accessibility hypothesis' '. The interplay of epigenetic changes including histone modifications, DNA methylation, RNA interference(RNAi) and other func- tional epigenetic components are intricate. It is believed that these changes are well-programmed, inherited and can be modified by environmental contaminant stressors. Environmentally-driven epigenetic alterations during development, e.g. embryonic, foetal or neonatal stage, may influence disease susceptibility in adulthood. Therefore, understanding how epigenome modifications develop in response to environmental chemicals and, how epigenetic-xenobiotic interactions influence human health will shed new insights into gene-environment interactions in the epidemiology of several diseases including cancer. In this review, we consider studies of chemical modifiers including nutritional and xenobiotic effects on epigenetic components in vitro or in vivo. By examining the most-studied epigenome modifications and how their respective roles are interlinked, we highlight the central role of xenbiotic- modified epigenetic mechanisms. A major requirement will be to study and understand effects following environmentally-relevant exposures. We suggest that the study of epigenetic toxicology will open up new opportunities to devise strategies for the prevention or treatment of at-risk populations.

Improving Shape from Shading with Interactive Tabu Search

Optimisation based shape from shading （SFS） is sensitive to initialization： errors in initialization are a signifi- cant cause of poor overall shape reconstruction. In this paper, we present a method to help overcome this problem by means of user interaction. There are two key elements in our method. Firstly, we extend SFS to consider a set of initializations, rather than to use a single one. Secondly, we efficiently explore this initialization space using a heuristic search method, tabu search, guided by user evaluation of the reconstruction quality. Reconstruction results on both synthetic and real images demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in providing more desirable shape reconstructions.

A screen for bacterial endosymbionts in the model organisms Tribolium castaneum, T. confusum, Callosobruchus maculatus, and related species

Reproductive parasites such as Wolbachia are extremely widespread amongst the arthropods and can have a large influence over the reproduction and fitness of their hosts. Undetected infections could thus confound the results of a wide range of studies that focus on aspects of host behavior, reproduction, fitness, and degrees of reproductive isolation. This potential problem has already been underlined by work investigating the in- cidence of Wolbachia infections in stocks of the model system Drosophila melanogaster. Here we survey a range of lab stocks of further commonly used model arthropods, fo- cusing especially on the flour beetles Tribolium castaneum and Tribolium confusum, the cowpea weevil Callosobruchus maculatus and related species （Coleoptera： Tenebrionidae and Bruchidae）. These species are widespread stored product pests so knowledge of infec- tions with symbionts further has potential use in informing biocontrol measures. Beetles were assessed for infection with 3 known microbial reproductive parasites： Wolbachia, Rickettsia, Spiroplasma. Infections with some of these microbes were found in some of the lab stocks studied, although overall infections were relatively rare. The consequences of finding infections in these or other species and the type of previous studies likely to be affected most are discussed.
