Foveal regeneration after resolution of cystoid macular edema without and with internal limiting membrane detachment:presumed role of glial cells for foveal structure stabilization

AIM: To document with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography the morphological regeneration of the fovea after resolution of cystoid macular edema(CME) without and with internal limiting membrane(ILM) detachment and to discuss the presumed role of the glial scaffold for foveal structure stabilization. METHODS: A retrospective case series of 38 eyes of 35 patients is described. Of these, 17 eyes of 16 patients displayed foveal regeneration after resolution of CME, and 6 eyes of 6 patients displayed CME with ILM detachment. Eleven eyes of 9 patients displayed other kinds of foveal and retinal disorders associated with ILM detachment. RESULTS: The pattern of edematous cyst distribution, with or without a large cyst in the foveola and preferred location of cysts in the inner nuclear layer or Henle fiber layer(HFL), may vary between different eyes with CME or in one eye during different CME episodes. Large cysts in the foveola may be associated with a tractional elevation of the inner foveal layers and the formation of a foveoschisis in the HFL. Edematous cysts are usually not formed in the ganglion cell layer. Eyes with CME and ILM detachment display a schisis between the detached ILM and nerve fiber layer(NFL) which is traversed by Müller cell trunks. ILM detachment was also found in single eyes with myopic traction maculopathy, macular pucker, full-thickness macular holes, outer lamellar holes, and glaucomatous parapapillary retinoschisis, and in 3 eyes with Müller cell sheen dystrophy(MCSD). As observed in eyes with MCSD, cellophane maculopathy, and macular pucker, respectively, fundus light reflections can be caused by different highly reflective membranes or layers: the thickened and tightened ILM which may or may not be detached from the NFL, the NFL, or idiopathic epiretinal membranes. A Simple, Fast and Stabilized Flowing Finite Volume Method for Solving General Curve Evolution Equations

A new simple Lagrangian method with favorable stability and efficiencyproperties for computing general plane curve evolutions is presented. The methodis based on the flowing finite volume discretization of the intrinsic partial differentialequation for updating the position vector of evolving family of plane curves. A curvecan be evolved in the normal direction by a combination of fourth order terms relatedto the intrinsic Laplacian of the curvature, second order terms related to the curva-ture, first order terms related to anisotropy and by a given external velocity field. Theevolution is numerically stabilized by an asymptotically uniform tangential redistri-bution of grid points yielding the first order intrinsic advective terms in the governingsystem of equations. By using a semi-implicit in time discretization it can be numer-ically approximated by a solution to linear penta-diagonal systems of equations (inpresence of the fourth order terms) or tri-diagonal systems (in the case of the secondorder terms). Various numerical experiments of plane curve evolutions, including, inparticular, nonlinear, anisotropic and regularized backward curvature flows, surfacediffusion and Willmore flows, are presented and discussed.

Patterns of grassland invasions by trees: insights from demographic and genetic spatial analyses

Aims Woody invasions into grasslands have increased globally due to changing land use,climate and introduced woody species,but spatial processes generating and sustaining these invasions are not well *** gain insight into the patterns of spread of tree populations within grasslands,and to propose a full spatial analytical toolbox for studying native and non-native woody spe-cies spread when long-term data are not available,we tested if 50 years of grassland invasion in Western Carpathians by Norway spruce(Picea abies Karst.)proceeded by one of the two tradi-tionally competing hypotheses of species spread:(i)by frontier expansion,or(ii)by advanced groups established ahead of the population *** also tested whether the pattern of invasion changed over *** We analyzed the spatial demographic and genetic patterns of a Norway spruce population invading a Western Carpathian grass-land using ripley’s L(t)and genetic kinship coefficients(Fij).We mapped and genotyped spruce trees across the invasion front(from the invasion leading edge to fully colonized grassland near the source population)using three demographic classes(adults,juve-niles and seedlings)to approximate the temporal aspects of the *** studied how the spatial patterns of invasion by indi-vidual demographic classes and their genetic kinship varied among adjacent plots established at different distances from the source population(ranging from 0 to 160 m,in 40-m distance increments).Important Findings Juveniles were positively genetically related to adults on fine scales(<4 m),suggesting that adults within the grassland acted as a seed source and accelerated early ***,adults did not act as nucleation centers for the formation of advanced juvenile ***,geneti-cally unrelated juveniles formed groups independently of *** groups were small and separate at the leading edge but they increased in size and graded into a continuous zone near the source popul

Influence of structural defects on charge density waves in 1T-TaS_(2)

The influence of intrinsic defects of 1T-TaS_(2)on charge density waves(CDWs)is studied using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy(STM,STS),angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy(ARPES),and density functional theory(DFT).We identify several types of structural defects and find that most have a local character limited to a single CDW site,with a single exception which effectively behaves as a dopant,leading to band-bending and affecting multiple neighboring *** only one type of defect can be observed by STM topographic imaging,all defects are easily resolved in STS *** results indicate modulation of the Mott band gap commensurate with the CDW and breaking of the three-fold symmetry of electronic *** calculations(with included Coulomb interactions)are used to investigate the electronic structure,focusing on both sulfur vacancy and oxygen-sulfur *** sulfur vacancy system,characterized with a metallic behavior,is identified as the origin of one of the experimentally observed ***,the effect of oxidation of 1T-TaS_(2)depends on the substitution site,leading to the heterogeneity of electronic properties.
