Impact and clinical usefulness of genetic data in the surgical management of colorectal cancer liver metastasis: a narrative review

Importance:In patients who undergo surgery for colorectal cancer liver metastases(CRLM),a number of somatic mutations have been associated with worse overall(OS)and recurrence-free survival(RFS).Although useful,an association with prognosis does not necessarily equate to an impact on surgical ***:The aim of this review was to investigate whether the best-studied somatic mutations impact surgical management of CRLM by informing:(I)post-hepatectomy surveillance;(II)selection of surgical technique;(III)selection of optimal margin width;and(IV)selection of patients for ***,we discuss the refinement of genetic data from overall mutation status to specific variants,as well as lesser studied somatic *** Review:We conducted a computerized search using PubMed and Google Scholar for reports published so far,using mesh headings and keywords related to genetic data and ***:Genetic data may impact surgical management of CRLM in three ***,KRAS mutations can predict lung ***,KRAS mutations may help tailor margin ***,KRAS mutations may help tailor surgical ***:Although genetic data may impact post-hepatectomy surveillance,selection of surgical technique and optimal margin width,their use to guide surgical selection remains elusive,as the data cannot support denying surgery to patients according to their somatic mutation profile.

Dynamic convergent shock compression initiated by return current in high-intensity laser-solid interactions

We investigate the dynamics of convergent shock compression in solid cylindrical targets irradiated by an ultrafast relativistic laser *** particle-in-cell simulations and coupled hydrodynamic simulations reveal that the compression process is initiated by both magnetic pressure and surface ablation associated with a strong transient surface return current with density of the order of 10^(17) A/m^(2) and lifetime of 100 *** results show that the dominant compression mechanism is governed by the plasma β,i.e.,the ratio of thermal pressure to magnetic *** targets with small radius and low atomic number Z,the magnetic pressure is the dominant shock compression *** to a scaling law,as the target radius and Z increase,the surface ablation pressure becomes the main mechanism generating convergent ***,an indirect experimental indication of shocked hydrogen compression is provided by optical shadowgraphy measurements of the evolution of the plasma expansion *** results presented here provide a novel basis for the generation of extremely high pressures exceeding Gbar(100 TPa)to enable the investigation of high-pressure physics using femtosecond J-level laser pulses,offering an alternative to nanosecond kJ-laser pulse-driven and pulsed power Z-pinch compression methods.

Differential roles of seed and sprout regeneration in forest diversity and productivity after disturbance

The Disc Acceleration e Xperiment(DAX)is one of the most recent experimental methods of performance characterization of new energetic materials.A cylindrical explosive charge accelerates a thin metallic disc and its velocity is measured continuously using photonic Doppler *** detonation velocity is measured *** DAX test can be used to obtain the Chapman-Jouguet(CJ)detonation pressure and to describe detonation products expansion using reduced amount of explosive.A series of DAX tests was performed at various charge diameters and disc thicknesses with Semtex 1 A plastic bonded explosive and sensitized *** DAX-like evaluation was also applied to previously measured data of Semtex 1A and A-IX-1 *** optimum disc thickness is determined by the disc to explosive mass ratio of *** repeatability of the Semtex 1 A detonation pressure results is about four times lower compared to the pressed and liquid explosives.

Virtual brain twins: from basic neuroscience to clinical use

Virtual brain twins are personalized, generative and adaptive brain models based on data from an individual's brain for scientific and clinical use. After a description of the key elements of virtual brain twins,we present the standard model for personalized whole-brain network models. The personalization is accomplished using a subject's brain imaging data by three means:(1) assemble cortical and subcortical areas in the subject-specific brain space;(2) directly map connectivity into the brain models, which can be generalized to other parameters; and(3) estimate relevant parameters through model inversion, typically using probabilistic machine learning. We present the use of personalized whole-brain network models in healthy ageing and five clinical diseases: epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and psychiatric disorders. Specifically, we introduce spatial masks for relevant parameters and demonstrate their use based on the physiological and pathophysiological hypotheses. Finally, we pinpoint the key challenges and future directions.

The reconstruction of images from their corresponding noisy Radon transform is a typical example of an ill-posed linear inverse problem as arising in the application of computerized tomography(CT).As the(naive)solution does not depend on the measured data continuously,regularization is needed to reestablish a continuous *** this work,we investigate simple,but yet still provably convergent approaches to learning linear regularization methods from *** specifically,we analyze two approaches:one generic linear regularization that learns how to manipulate the singular values of the linear operator in an extension of our previous work,and one tailored approach in the Fourier domain that is specific to *** prove that such approaches become convergent regularization methods as well as the fact that the reconstructions they provide are typically much smoother than the training data they were trained ***,we compare the spectral as well as the Fourier-based approaches for CT-reconstruction numerically,discuss their advantages and disadvantages and investigate the effect of discretization errors at differentresolutions.

Wear dependent virtual flow rate sensor for progressing cavity pumps with deformable stator

This contribution presents a novel wear dependent virtual flow rate sensor for single stage single lobe progressing cavity pumps. We study the wear-induced material loss of the pump components and the impact of this material loss on the volumetric efficiency. The results are combined with an established backflow model to implement a backflow calculation procedure that is adaptive to wear. We use a laboratory test setup with a highly abrasive fluid and operate a pump from new to worn condition to validate our approach. The obtained measurement data show that the presented virtual sensor is capable of calculating the flow rate of a pump being subject to wear during its regular operation.

The simulation of industry-scale reactive bulks is challenging due to the complex interaction between fluid and *** particles in the bulk and their interaction with the fluid flow can be described by combined Discrete element Method-Computational Fluid Dynamics(DeM-CFD)***,the computational cost of the Finite Volume(FV)methods deployed in these models can become prohibi-tively expensive,especially for high inner-particle *** particle Reduced Models(RMs)can be used to achieve both fast and accurate descriptions of the processes in each *** an example of bulk systems comprising heat and mass transfer,we compared FV and RM simulations for the drying of wood chips in a bulk reactor.A manifold-based nonlinear interpolation was applied to resolve changing boundary conditions for the *** simulations showed that RMs provide accurate values for the thermodynamic state variables of the ***,the time required for the bulk simulation was reduced by 67%with the *** is evident that simulations with high inner-particle resolution can be accelerated by RMs if manifold-based nonlinear interpolation is used to address changing boundary conditions.
