We have previously reported that sequential common artery sectioning (SCAS) in mice produces a reproducible pattern of mortality, extensive brain damage and a wide range of measurable neurobehavioral alterations that include motor incoordination and forelimb flexion. The present study describes a comprehensive method to assess motor functional outcome after brain ischemia produced by SCAS using swimming behavior. We found that after the second artery occlusion the time for completion of the swimming task significantly increased and the swimming pattern alterations observed in the ischemic mice showed no evidence of recovery (up to 96 h). We view the swimming performance strategy described here as a sensitive, simple and economic procedure to assess motor performance after brain ischemia.

AIM: To establish an association between the serum leptin levels and the development of gallstone disease (gD).METHODS: We carried out a non-matched case-controlled study in a university hospital in Mexico City. Two hundred and eighty-seven subjects were included: 97 cases with gallstones and 190 controls. Body mass index (BMI), fasting plasma leptin, insulin, serum lipid, and lipoprotein levels were measured. Insulin resistance was calculated by homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR). Unconditional logistic regression analysis (univariate and multivariate)stratified by BMI was used to calculate the risk of ***: The multivariate conditional regression analysis revealed a model for those patients with BMI ＜30. The selected variables in the model were HOMA-IR index with OR = 1.31, P= 0.02 and leptin higher than median with OR = 2.11, P= 0.05. In the stratum of BMI ≥30, we did not find a useful ***: We concluded that insulin resistance and the development of gD appears to be associated with serum leptin levels in subjects with overweight, but not in obese subjects with similar metabolic profiles.

AIM： To explore the role of ghrelin in gallstone disease. METHODS： We carried out a cross-sectional study in 150 subjects, 38 with gallstones （cases） and 112 controls. We also did a real-time PCR-RT study in twenty gallbladder samples each. Body mass index （BNI）, serum insulin, ghrelin, and serum lipids were measured. Logistic regression analyses （univariate and multivariate） were conducted to estimate the probability of gallstone disease associated with serum ghrelin concentrations. RESULTS： Cases were statistically different from controls in gender distribution （P = 0.01）, age （53 vs 44 yr, P = 0.002）, BNI （28 vs 25; P = 0.004）, and glucose （5.26 vs 4.98 mmol/L; P = 0.05）. The prevalence of ghrelin serum levels above the third tercile was lower in subjects without metabolic syndrome （P 〈 0.05）. In a multivariate model, we found a protective effect, when ghrelin values were higher than the median value （OR = 0.27, 95%CI 0.09-0.82, P = 0.02）. Twenty （20%） gallbladder specimens expressed ghrelin mRNA. CONCLUSION： Serum ghrelin concentrations are associated with a protective effect of gD.

The genus Pterostemon Schauer (Iteaceae), is a group of three species restricted in distribution to Mexico. It includes: Pterostemon mexicanus Schauer, P. rotundifolius Ramírez, and P. bravoanus J. Jiménez-Ram. & martínez gordillo. On the basis of field observations and herbarium specimens, we review the morphology (vegetative and reproductive), and distribution to give an updated taxonomic treatment for the genus. Additionally the utility of morphological characters is evaluated for taxomic use, and detailed taxonomic descriptions and ecological associations are given for each species.

Relevance of Family in Academic Success on Children

The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between academic success and functional and dysfunctional families. A non-experimental, cross-sectional, descriptive correlational design was used. A convenience sample of 200 children between 6 and 13 years old, primary and junior high school students was conducted (32.3% were female and 67.7% were male). To assess the relationship, a study case of 21 reagents was designed to empty the obtained information from medical review records from a psychopedagogic clinic. Academic success was measured as from the revision of informal tests and standardized tests. Results showed that the population levels of academic success were average. However, a significant relationship between the age of the parents and the level of academic success was found, indicating that these variables are associated with this problem. Besides that, it was found that there is a tendency in children with cognitive, emotional and sensory problems reflected in low academic success. The findings provide information that could be considered for the development of programs of psychopedagogic intervention to treat children with learning disabilities and low academic success.

This study presents the environmental impact assessment of an absorption heat transformer designed to recover 1 kW of thermal energy from each 2 kW of waste heat supplies. The net contribution of the heat transformer is a load avoided of 0.665 kg CO2 equivalents;the recovery process avoids 0.729 kg CO2 equivalents and the major contribution to the environment impacts is the pumping process with 0.0437 kg CO2 equivalents for each 1 kWh recovered. The study results show that absorption heat transformer is a good environmental option because it produces useful energy from waste heat and the final result is an environmental impact diminution.

Background: The Center of Molecular Immunology (CIM) is a center in Cuba devoted to the research, development and manufacturing of biotechnological products. CIMAvax?EgF is a vaccine for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer patients (NSCL). Purpose: The aim of this work is to evaluate the effects of some potential prognostic factors on the overall survival of patients treated with CIMAvax?EgF vaccine, based on data collected in a phase II and a phase III clinical trials. Methods: The stratified Cox regression model is used to evaluate the effects of these prognostic factors, based on separate analysis for each trial, and on the combined data from both trials. Results: Patients with Performance status 0 or 1, with IV stage of tumor and male under 60 years obtain more benefit in terms of overall survival if they receive CIMAvax?EgF. Conclusions: Vaccinated group has a better performance if patients have a performance status 0 or 1, stage IV and age under 60 years. These prognostic factors influence overall survival in a positive way for those patients that received CIMAvax?EgF.
