Parallel personal measurements of diesel engine exhaust and crystalline silica using dual sampling port

Diesel engine exhaust(DEE) and crystalline silica exposures occur simultaneously in the mining industry,and occupational sampling campaigns can be time-and cost-consuming. The authors evaluated a dualport system for simultaneous sampling of DEE and crystalline silica in laboratory and field *** tests evaluated the operation of pumps during 8 h sampling and the intensity of the flow variation for various filter loading conditions and for different modes of operation. Field validation was performed in an underground mine. Pumps operated in constant flow or constant pressure *** in constant flow mode showed that when the flowrate increased on one side of the system, it decreased on the opposite side according to the loading intensity. Tests in constant pressure mode showed that flowrates systematically decreased when using loaded cassettes. However, the higher the backpressure setting, the lower the flow variation was. Flow variations during field tests were generally within the acceptable ±5% range. However, significant flow variations were identified in higher concentrations. A significant negative correlation was found between flowrate variation and total carbon concentration. While the majority of tests support the use of the dual-port for evaluating concomitant exposures, results highlight the possibility of filter overloading as a cause of flowrate changes.

This paper studies the amplitude of random telegraph noise （RTN） caused by a single trap in the sili- con film of ultra-thin buried oxide （UTBOX） silicon-on-insulator （SOl） devices. The film-defect-related RTN was identified and analyzed by low frequency noise measurement and time domain measurement. Emphasis is on the relative amplitude AID/ID, which is studied in the function of the front-gate, the back-gate and the drain-to-source biases. Interesting asymmetric or symmetric VDS dependence of switched source and drain are observed and sup- ported by calibrated Sentaurus simulations. It is believed the asymmetry of the VDs dependence of the switched source and drain is related to the lateral trap position along the source and drain.

Interaction of Aromatic Hydrocarbons with Sulfuric Acid,Bisulfate and Sulfate Anions

Intermolecular geometries and energies of the dimers formed between simple aromatic hydrocarbons （benzene, toluene and naphthalene） and sulfate species （sulfuric acid, bisulfate and sulfate） were studied by density functional theory. The AH：H2SO4 complexes were determined by the OH-π H-bond, with H2SO4 acting as the H-bond donor and AHs as the aeeeptor. However, the AHs：HSO4- and AHs：SO4^2- complexes were established by the H-bond, with AHs serving as acid and HSO4 or SO4^2- as alkali. The atmospheric implications of those complexes were strongly supported by their considerable binding energies.

Multidrug resistance extended spectrum β-lactamase and AmpC producing Escherichia coli isolated from the environment of Bogor Slaughterhouse,Indonesia

To determine the multidrug resistance extended spectrum β-lactamase and AmpC (ESBL/AmpC producing) Escherichia coli (E. coli) isolated from the environment of Bogor slaughterhouse, *** total of 35 samples from 7 locations in slaughterhouse i.e., source of water, slaughtering floor, swab of carcass area floor, swab of evisceration area floor, untreated waste water, treated waste water, drinking water for cattle were collected from March to April 2016. Presence of ESBL/AmpC producing E. coli and susceptibility testing against 8 antimicrobial agents (penicillin G, streptomycin, gentamycin, ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, tetracycline, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and polymyxin B) were detected by disk diffusion test according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards ***/AmpC producing E. coli were identified in 14.3% (5/35) of the collected samples from the environment of Bogor slaughterhouse. ESBL/AmpC-producing E. coli isolates were detected in untreated waste water (n = 3), slaughtering floor (n = 1), and carcass area floor (n = 1). Most of ESBL/AmpC-producing E. coli isolates (80%) showed multidrug resistance phenotypes against at least three classes of antibiotics. The highest incidence of antibiotics resistance was against penicillin G (100.0%) and streptomycin (100.0%), followed by gentamicin (60.0%), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (60.0%), tetracycline (40.0%), ciprofloxacin (40.0%), enrofloxacin (20.0%), and polymyxin B (0.0%).ConclusionsThe transmission of antimicrobial resistant bacteria into the environment may be a potential risk for human health.

Early-age feed restriction affects viability and gene expression of satellite cells isolated from the gastrocnemius muscle of broiler chicks

Background： Muscle growth depends on the fusion of proliferate satellite cells to existing myofibers. We reported previously that 0-14 day intermittent feeding led to persistent retardation in myofiber hypertrophy. However, how satellite cells respond to such nutritional insult has not been adequately elucidated. Results： One-day-old broiler chicks were allocated to control （Con, ad libitum feeding）, intermittent feeding （IF, feed provided on alternate days） and re-feeding （RF, 2 days ad libitum feeding after 12 days of intermittent feeding） groups. Chickens were killed on Day 15 and satellite cells were isolated. When cultured, satellite cells from the IF group demonstrated significant retardation in proliferation and differentiation potential, while RF partly restored the proliferation rate and differentiation potential of the satellite cells. Significant up-regulation of insulin like growth factor I receptor （IGF-IR）（P〈O.05） and thyroid hormone receptor o （TRo）（P〈O.05）, and down-regulation of growth hormone receptor （GHR）（P〈O.01） and IGF-I （P〈O.01） mRNA expression was observed in freshly isolated IF satellite cells when compared with Con cells. In RF cells, the mRNA expression of IGF-I was higher （P〈O.05） and of TRa was lower （P〈O.01） than in IF cells, suggesting that RF restored the mRNA expression of TRa and IGF-I, but not of GHR and IGF-IR. The Bax/Bcl-2 ratio tended to increase in the IF group, which was reversed in the RF group （P〈O.05）, indicating that RF reduced the pro-apoptotic influence of iF. Moreover, no significant effect of T3 was detected on cell survival in IF cells compared with Con （P〈O.O01） or RF （P〈O.05） cells. Conclusions： These data suggest that early-age feed restriction inhibits the proliferation and differentiation of satellite cells, induces changes in mRNA expression of the GH/IGF-I and thyroid hormone receptors in satellite cells, as well as blunted sensitivity of satellite cells to T3, and that RF partially reverses these effects.

The ideal crystalline framework of zeolites is perturbed by hydroxyl groups. In pure silica zeolites the framework is neutral, however, the introduction of Al3+into the Si4+oxide framework creates negative charges, giving rise to Br?nsted acid sites (BASs). O?ten referred to as bridged hydroxyls [Si–O(H)–Al], they are formed when a proton is bound to one of the oxygens adjacent to an aluminum.

CTX-M producing Escherichia coli isolated from cattle feces in Bogor slaughterhouse,Indonesia

Objective: To determine the occurrence of CTX-M producing Escherichia coli(E. coli)from cattle feces in Bogor slaughterhouse, ***: A total of 220 cattle feces samples were collected from Bogor slaughterhouse from March to April 2015. Presence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase(ESBL) producing E. coli was detected by disc diffusion test based on the recommendation from Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute(2014). Bacterial strains which were confirmed as producing ESBLs were further analyzed for the presence of bla genes of the ESBL by ***: The results showed that CTX-M producing E. coli isolates were detected in 19 samples from 220 samples(8.6%). The b-lactamase genes detected were CTX-M-1(n = 10) and CTX-M-9(n = 9). All of the CTX-M producing E. coli isolates showed multidrug resistance phenotypes to at least four antibiotics. The highest incidence of antibiotics resistance was showed to ampicillin(100.0%), cefotaxime(100.0%), and cefpodoxime(100.0%), followed by streptomycin(84.3%), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole(73.7%), erythromycin(52.6%), kanamycin(26.3%), doxycycline(10.5%), and ceftazidime(0.0%).Conclusions: Detection of CTX-M-producing E. coli in cattle feces raises important questions as they can represent a potential risk factor to public health.
