Pure and mixed plantations of Persian walnut (Juglans regia L.) for high quality timber production in Chile, South America

Aims Persian walnut(Juglans regia L.),an interesting forest species for the veneering industry,requires adequate management to produce valuable high-quality *** species associations and management level can improve stand productivity,the novelty of this work was to assess Persian walnut performance in different planting mixtures and in pure plantations conditioned to management *** Growth,straightness and survival measurements were taken annually for 7 years after planting pure and mixed plantations under two contrasting management *** were recorded at Age 7 in all *** each management intensity,besides the monoculture,three mixtures were tested:a mixture of only main forest species,main forest species plus one arboreal companion species,Black alder(Alnus glutinosa L.)and main species plus the shrub Russian olive(Elaeagnus angustifolia L.)as nurse species.A test of interaction between plantation type and management scenario was conducted using repeated growth *** Findings The interaction was significant,indicating the presence of different mechanisms underlying plantation effects under high and low management *** with pure plantations,Persian walnut associated with the nurse shrub exhibited 78%higher height and 53%higher diameter growth in plantations under low *** benefits(lower presence of walnut blight than in the monoculture)and better straightness were also found in the association including the shrub when the management intensity was not *** beneficial effects in the presence of Russian olive were not present under high management intensity(irrigation,fertilization,tutoring and frequent pruning).Site-specific designs for Persian walnut plantations would depend on the foreseen management intensity.

Memory deficit,which is often associated with aging and many psychiatric,neurological,and neurodegenerative diseases,has been a challenging issue for *** till now,all potential drug candidates have failed to produce satisfa ctory ***,in the search for a solution,we found that a treatment with the gene corresponding to the RGS14414protein in visual area V2,a brain area connected with brain circuits of the ventral stream and the medial temporal lobe,which is crucial for object recognition memory(ORM),can induce enhancement of *** this study,we demonstrated that the same treatment with RGS14414in visual area V2,which is relatively unaffected in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer s disease,produced longlasting enhancement of ORM in young animals and prevent ORM deficits in rodent models of aging and Alzheimer’s ***,we found that the prevention of memory deficits was mediated through the upregulation of neuronal arbo rization and spine density,as well as an increase in brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF).A knockdown of BDNF gene in RGS14414-treated aging rats and Alzheimer s disease model mice caused complete loss in the upregulation of neuronal structural plasticity and in the prevention of ORM *** findings suggest that BDNF-mediated neuronal structural plasticity in area V2 is crucial in the prevention of memory deficits in RGS14414-treated rodent models of aging and Alzheimer’s ***,our findings of RGS14414gene-mediated activation of neuronal circuits in visual area V2 have therapeutic relevance in the treatment of memory deficits.

Olfactory ensheathing glia promote axonal regeneration in the mammalian central nervous system,including retinal ganglion cell axonal growth through the injured optic ***,it is unknown whether olfactory ensheathing glia also have neuroprotective *** ensheathing glia express brain-derived neurotrophic factor,one of the best neuroprotectants for axotomized retinal ganglion ***,we aimed to investigate the neuroprotective capacity of olfactory ensheating glia after optic nerve *** ensheathing glia cells from an established rat immortalized clonal cell line,TEG3,were intravitreally injected in intact and axotomized retinas in syngeneic and allogeneic mode with or without microglial inhibition or immunosuppressive *** and gene expression analyses were *** bulb-derived primary olfactory ensheathing glia and TEG3 express major histocompatibility complex classⅡ*** and syngenically transplanted TEG3 cells survived in the vitreous for up to 21 days,forming an *** axotomized retinas,only the allogeneic TEG3 transplant rescued retinal ganglion cells at 7 days but not at 21 *** these retinas,microglial anatomical activation was higher than after optic nerve crush *** intact retinas,both transplants activated microglial cells and caused retinal ganglion cell death at 21 days,a loss that was higher after allotransplantation,triggered by pyroptosis and partially rescued by microglial inhibition or ***,neuroprotection of axotomized retinal ganglion cells did not improve with these *** different neuroprotective properties,different toxic effects,and different responses to microglial inhibitory treatments of olfactory ensheathing glia in the retina depending on the type of transplant highlight the importance of thorough preclinical studies to explore these variables.

Constructive thinking,rational intelligence and irritable bowel syndrome

AIM： To evaluate rational and experiential intelligence in irritable bowel syndrome （IBS） sufferers. METHODS： We recruited 100 subjects with IBS as per Rome 11 criteria （50 consulters and 50 non-consulters） and 100 healthy controls, matched by age, sex and educational level. Cases and controls completed a clinical questionnaire （including symptom characteristics and medical consultation） and the following tests： rational- intelligence （Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, 3rd edition）; experiential-intelligence （Constructive Thinking Inventory）; personality （NEO personality inventory）; psychopathology （MMPI-2）, anxiety （state-trait anxiety inventory） and life events （social readjustment rating scale）. Analysis of variance was used to compare the test results of IBS-sufferers and controls, and a logistic regression model was then constructed and adjusted for age, sex and educational level to evaluate any possible association with IBS. RESULTS： No differences were found between IBS cases and controls in terms of IQ （102.0 ± 10.8 vs 102.8 ± 12.6）, but IBS sufferers scored significantly lower in global constructive thinking （43.7± 9.4 vs 49.6 ± 9.7）. In the logistic regression model, global constructive thinking score was independently linked to suffering from IBS [OR 0.92 （0.87-0.97）], without significant OR for total IQ. CONCLUSION： IBS subjects do not show lower rational intelligence than controls, but lower experiential intelligence is nevertheless associated with IBS.

Neurological complications associated with HIV-1/AIDS are being recognized with a high frequency that parallels the increased number of AIDS cases. The early infiltration by HIV-1 into the nervous system can cause primary and/or secondary neurological complications. The most common neurocognitive disorder is AIDS Dementia Complex (ADC). In developing countries of Asia the three most opportunistic infections are tuberculosis (TB), cryptococcosis, and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. Therefore, it is expected that secondary neurological complications due to TB and cryptococcosis will be the most common cause of morbility and mortality in HIV-1/AIDS cases in China. Research of NeuroAIDS in China is necessary to understand the impact and the biology of HIV-1 in the nervous system. Future studies would include, the molecular epidemiology and the description of opportunistic infections associated to HIV-1; the neuropathological description of primary and secondary HIV-1 complications in different groups; the HIV-1 neurot- ropism and immune response studies for China’s unique HIV-1 strains and recombinant forms derived from the nervous system, including experimental models such as the use of transgenic rats; and the study of potential resistant virus, primarily when the anti-retroviral therapy (ART) has not full access in the brain.

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus(SARS-CoV)-2 infection induces an exacerbated inflammation driven by innate immunity *** cells(DCs)play a key role in the defense against viral infections,for instance plasmacytoid DCs(pDCs),have the capacity to produce vast amounts of interferon-alpha(IFN-α).In COVID-19 there is a deficit in DC numbers and IFN-αproduction,which has been associated with disease *** this work,we described that in addition to the DC deficiency,several DC activation and homing markers were altered in acute COVID-19 patients,which were associated with multiple inflammatory ***,previously hospitalized and nonhospitalized patients remained with decreased numbers of CD1c+myeloid DCs and pDCs seven months after SARS-CoV-2 ***,the expression of DC markers such as CD86 and CD4 were only restored in previously nonhospitalized patients,while no restoration of integrinβ7 and indoleamine 2,3-dyoxigenase(IDO)levels were *** findings contribute to a better understanding of the immunological sequelae of COVID-19.

Lung major resections involving bronchovascular reconstruction pose a surgical challenge due to their technical complexity and *** traditional techniques to perform vascular or bronchial reconstructions through multiportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery(VATS)approach can be applied also by uniportal VATS ***,specific tools have already been developed in order to facilitate these procedures through uniportal VATS approach increasing comfort and workspace through the single port *** procedures must be performed just in very highly uniportal VATS trained teams and it is recommended that teams who perform these techniques previously have completed the advanced learning curve for lung major resections through uniportal VATS *** aim of this paper is to describe the major key points for performing most frequent bronchovascular reconstructions through uniportal VATS approach in a safe and feasible *** technique is step by step described in order to safely perform most common uniportal VATS left/right side lung major bronchovascular resections and *** tip and tricks are detailed in order to facilitate vascular control,bronchovascular reconstructions and unexpected bleeding control through uniportal VATS approach.

Primary Thyroid Lymphoma (PTL) is an uncommon disease, although its incidence is of 5%. Ultrasound and Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) usually do not provide the diagnosis. Surgery is one of the treatment options because it enables histological diagnosis and can also relieve compression symptoms in patients with rapid growth cervical mass. We present 7 cases of PTL diagnosed in the last 10 years in our unit. Five were female (71.4%) and 2 were male (28.6%). The mean age was 64.2 (range: 40 - 81);4 patients (57.1%) had associated Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis (HT). One patient (14.2%) had concomitant Graves disease. 5 cases presented with compressive symptoms and cervical mass. Ultrasound was not diagnostic in any case. FNAC was diagnostic only in one patient (14.3%). Five patients underwent total thyroidectomy (71.4%). All the cases were diagnosed with lymphoma postoperatively. Two interventions consisted of left hemithyroidectomies (28.6%). No complications appeared. 5 patients (71.4%) were classified as Mucosa-Associated Lymphoid Tissue (MALT) lymphoma. We also observed 1 Follicular grade I lymphoma and 1 Burkitt case. When the extension study was done, 1 patient was at stage IIIE (14%), 2 at IIE (28.5%) and 4 at IE (57.14%). Rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and prednisone (R-CHOP) and Iphosphamide, ethoposide and high dose Cytarabine (IVAC) were the treatment scheme when chemotherapy was used (in three cases). Two cases were treated only with total thyroidectomy, and 2 with total thyroidectomy and rituximab, and the latter was MALT. Complete Remission (CR) was achieved in all patients in the first year. All are still alive and in CR. In our experience, PTL diagnose can be challenging before surgery. Although surgery is not the gold standard for treatment, when it is done, it should be curative in MALT lymphomas confined to the thyroid.
