Mesenchymal stem cells-based therapy as a potential treatment in neurodegenerative disorders: is the escape from senescence an answer?

Aging is the most prominent risk factor contributing to the development of neurodegenerative disorders. In the United States, over 35 million of elderly people suffer from age-related diseases. Aging impairs the self-repair ability of neuronal cells, which undergo progressive deterioration. Once initiated, this process hampers the already limited regenerative power of the central nervous system, making the search for new therapeutic strategies particularly difficult in elderly affected patients. So far, mesenchymal stem cells have proven to be a viable option to ameliorate certain aspects of neurodegeneration, as they possess high proliferative rate and differentiate in vitro into multiple lineages. However, accumulating data have demonstrated that during longterm culture, mesenchymal stem cells undergo spontaneous transformation. Transformed mesenchymal stem cells show typical features of senescence, including the progressive shortening of telomers, which results in cell loss and, as a consequence, hampered regenerative potential. These evidences, in line with those observed in mesenchymal stem cells isolated from old donors, suggest that senescence may represent a limit to mesenchymal stem cells exploitation in therapy, prompting scholars to either find alternative sources of pluripotent cells or to arrest the age-re- lated transformation. In the present review, we summarize findings from recent literature, and critically discuss some of the major hurdles encountered in the search of appropriate sources of mesenchymal stem cells, as well as benefits arising from their use in neurodegenerative diseases. Finally, we provide some insights that may aid in the development of strategies to arrest or, at least, delay the aging of mesenchymal stem cells to improve their therapeutic potential.

Catalyst-Free Synthesis and Shape Control of CdTe Nanowires

The procedure reported here allows for the size and shape control of CdTe nanowires by means of colloidal chemistry. Thus, ultrathin, straight, saw-tooth-like and one-sided branched nanowires with zinc blende structures could be synthesized. Their formation does not require any catalyst and is most likely due to the oriented attachment of nanoparticles formed in the beginning of the reaction. The use of oleylamine as a solvent turned out to be crucial in order to achieve CdTe nanowires. The reaction between oleic acid and oleylamine in the presence of CdO proved to be essential, not only to activate the Cd precursor but also to provide reaction conditions facilitating nanowire formation by oriented attachment.

Occurrence of human pathogenic viruses in drinking water and in its sources:A review

Since many waterborne diseases are caused by human pathogenic viruses,virus monitoring of drinking water(DW)and DW sources is crucial for public ***,the aim of this review was to describe the occurrence of human pathogenic viruses in DW and DW sources;the occurrence of two viruses proposed as novel indicators of human faecal contamination(Peppermild mottle virus and Tobacco mosaic virus)was also *** research was focused on articles that assessed viral occurrence using molecular methods in the surface water used for DW production(SW-D),groundwater used for DW production(GW-D),DW and bottled-DW(BW).A total of 1544 studies published in the last 10 years were analysed,and 79 were ultimately *** considering the detection methods,filtration is the most common concentration technique,while quantitative polymerase chain reaction is the most common quantification *** virus occurrence in SW-D,GW-D,and DW,high percentages of positive samples were reported for adenovirus,polyomavirus and Pepper mild mottle *** genomes were frequently detected in SW-D and rarely in GW-D,suggesting that GW-D may be a safe DW *** genomes were also detected in DW,posing a possible threat to human *** lowest percentages of positive samples were found in Europe,while the highest were found in Asia and South *** three articles assessed viral occurrence in *** review highlights the lack of method standardization and the need for legislation updates.

The role of small vessel disease in development of Alzheimer's disease

Classically Alzheimer＇s disease and vascular dementia have been considered as two different entities, with their own clinical criteria, but relatively recent epidemiological and clinicopathological studies suggest an overlap between them sharing not only most of the risk factors and some clinical aspects but also pathophysiological mechanisms. Cerebrovascular lesions, especially small vessel disease （lacunar infarcts, white matter hyperintensities and microbleeds）, may magnify the effects of mild Alzheimer＇s disease pathology and promote the progression of cognitive decline and may also be a precursor of neuronal damage and dementia. ＂Vascular hypothesis＂ of Alzheimer＇s disease would open a window for new approaches and treatments.

Spontaneous regression of pancreatic cancer: Real or a misdiagnosis?

Spontaneous tumor regression has been subject of numerous studies and speculations for many years. This phenomenon is exceptional, but well reported, in some types of tumors, but not in pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer has the worst five-year survival rate of any cancer. Despite numerous molecular studies and clinical approaches, using several mouse models, this cancer responds poorly to the existing chemotherapeutic agents and progress on treatment remains elusive. Although pancreatic cancer tumors seldom undergo spontaneous regression, and some authors take that with skepticism, there are some cases reported in the literature. However, the variability in the description of the reports and technical details could make this process susceptible to misdiagnosis. Distinguishing between different types of pancreatic carcinoma should be taken with caution as they have wide differences in malignant potential. Diseases such as pancreatic benign tumors, insulinomas, or autoimmune pancreatitis could be responsible for this misdiagnosis as a pancreatic cancer. Here we review different cases reported, their clinical characteristics, and possible mechanisms leading to spontaneous regression of pancreatic cancer. We also discuss the possibilities of misdiagnosis.

Redox behavior of gold supported on ceria and ceria-zirconia based catalysts

A series of gold-based catalysts were prepared by deposition precipitation or incipient wetness impregnation on CexZ1-xO2 solid solutions （0.28≤x≤1.00）. The morphological and structural characterization of these catalysts were carried out with X-ray diffraction, trans- mission electron microscopy （TEM） analysis and physical adsorption technique, and their redox properties were studied by temperature programmed reduction using both H2 and CO as probe molecules. Two cycles of oxidation/reduction were carried out in order to evaluate the effects of redox aging and gold sintering on the oxygen exchange capability. As observed with other noble metals, gold enhanced and promoted the ceria reduction at lower temperatures. Reduction by CO was shown to be dependent on the fine dispersion of gold and to be nega- tively affected by the ageing process more than reduction with hydrogen. This might have implications in reactions like water gas shift and CO-PROX which involve CO as a main reactant.

Nutritional quality of Drosophila melanogaster as factitious prey for rearing the predatory bug Orius majusculus

The predatory bug,Orius majusculus(Reuter),is an important predator of thrips commercially produced for augmentative releases using the eggs of the Mediterranea n flour moth Ephestia kuehniella(Zeller).In this study,we assessed the potential for using frozen adults of fruit flies,Drosophila melanogaster(Meigen),either as nymphal rearing diet or as diet throughout the entire *** compared life-hi story traits and reproduction of predators when fed *** with high lipid body content(lipid-rich)and with high protein body content(protein-rich),using a diet of 100%*** eggs as *** also analyzed the biochemical composition of both prey and predator in order to assess the nutritional quality of each diet,which partially explained the adequacy of the different diets for *** were significant differences between predators fed the two types of ***,with the protein-rich flies as diet providing the best results in terms of mortality and ***,we show that while feeding *** throughout their development with *** increases mortality and reduces reproduction,protein-rich *** can be used as nymphal diet with minimal reduction in reproductivity and minimal increase in mortality.

New insights for the catalytic oxidation of cyclohexane to K-A oil

Au-based catalysts have been reported to be active in the cyclohexane oxidation to K-A oil, but they showed some limitiations in terms of productivity, selectivity and required reaction conditions. The possibility to overcome some of these limits has been explored coupling Au with Cu, which can be suitable for undergoing the electron-switch in the initial step of the cyclohexane oxidation. Hence, a bimetallic 2 wt% Au Cu/Al_(2)O_(3) catalyst was tested in the oxidation of cyclohexane, working at mild conditions of 120 ℃ and 4 bar of O_(2). The combination of the catalyst with a very small amount of benzaldehyde used as cheaper and non-toxic radical initiator allowed to obtain a very high productivity of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone(45 mmol*m L/mgmet*h) with a selectivity of 94%. Moreover, comparing the catalysed reaction with the non-catalysed one, the role of the catalyst has been disclosed.

Sensitivity of polyphagous(Plodia interpunctella)and stenophagous(Ephestia kuehniella)storage moths to residual insecticides:effect of formulation and larval age

Pyralid moths,Ephestia kuehniella and Plodia interpunctella,are prevalent stored product *** insecticides are the main tool to control these moths in the *** data describing the response of these moths to insecticides are *** lethal effect of the organophosphate,pyrethroid,and halogenated-pyrrole on moths larvae were compared in laboratory *** hypothesis was that the very polyphagous ***-punctella would have generally higher insecticide tolerance than that of the stenophagous *** insecticide concentrations were applied onto the inner surface of glass tube *** larvae of 14 or 21 d old of *** and 7 or 14 d old of *** were used by *** larval mortality was checked after 24 h of *** mortality was significantly influenced by age of larvae and the groups of *** differences among the efficacies of the tested formulations with identical active compounds were found,except significant different mortality of *** on deltamethrin formulations.A comparison of analytical standards showed that *** was less susceptible to the active ingredient pirimiphos-methyl than ***,while *** was less susceptible to deltamethrin than *** differences between the two species were observed for *** therefore rejected the hypothesis that polyphagy/stenophagy can be a general predictor of insecticide tolerance in the two tested storage *** most important finding for effective use was that the young larvae of both species were more susceptible to tested insecticides than older larvae.
