Non-traditional lignocellulosic materials are a significant resource for producing high-value products,including *** work studied the nanocellulose obtention from chemical pulps of the two fast-growing bamboo species,Guadua trinii,and Guadua *** pulps were produced by soda-anthraquinone(S)pulping from both autohydrolysis-pretreated(H)and unpretreated bamboo ***-pretreated(SHP)and unpretreated soda-anthraquinone(AQ)(SP)pulps were characterized by yield,Kappa number,alpha,beta,and gamma cellulose,degree of polymerization,water retention value,and *** nanocellulose was produced by a sequential chemical oxidation treatment(2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl,TEMPO reagent)and mechanical *** was characterized by carboxylic group content and *** results revealed that autohydrolysis pretreatment resulted in a higher hemicelluloses extraction in *** contrast,the pulping yield of unpretreated samples was higher for ***,and the soda-AQ pulps from this species exhibited better delignification than the autohydrolysis-pretreated *** crystallinity index values of the obtained pulps were high(>80%),and the alpha-cellulose contents were *** viscosities of the aqueous nanocellulose suspensions were higher for the nanocellulose solutions obtained from the unpretreated soda-AQ ***,nanocellulose from *** unpretreated soda-AQ pulps had a higher rate of carboxylic *** results of this work are significant in assessing the potential of both bamboo species as a source of high-value products within the biorefinery framework because the viscosities of the aqueous nanocellulose suspensions depend on the size and shape of *** has significant importance for industrial unit operations and potential applications.

Although only a single serotype of hepatitis E virus (HEV),the causative agent of hepatitis E,has been identified,there is great genetic variation among the different HEV isolates *** are at least four major recognized genotypes of HEV:genotypes 1 and 2 are mainly restricted to humans and linked to epidemic outbreaks in nonindustrialized countries,whereas genotypes 3 and 4 are zoonotic in both developing and industrialized *** human strains,genotype 3 and 4 strains of HEV have been genetically characterized from swine,sika deer,mongooses,sheep,and ***,there are approximately 11,000 human and animal sequences of HEV available at the International Nucleotide Sequence Database *** is the major cause of waterborne outbreaks of hepatitis in areas of poor ***,it is responsible for sporadic cases of viral hepatitis in not only endemic but industrialized countries as *** of HEV occurs predominantly by the fecal-oral route,although parenteral and perinatal routes have been *** infection develops in most individuals as a self-limiting,acute,icteric hepatitis;with mortality rates around 1%.However,some affected individuals will develop fulminant hepatic failure,a serious condition that is frequently fatal without a liver *** complication is particularly common when the infection occurs in pregnant women,where mortality rates rise dramatically to up to 25%.Among the preventive measures available to avoid HEV infection,two separate subunit vaccines containing recombinant truncated capsid proteins of HEV have been shown to be highly effective in the prevention of *** of them,HEV 239,was approved in China,and its commercialization by Innovax began in November 2012 under the name Hecolin(R).

Influence of different sports on fat mass and lean mass in growing girls

Purpose: The aim of this study was to analyze and compare the effects of different sports(swimming, football, basketball, and handball) on fat mass and lean mass in prepubertal and pubertal ***: Two hundred girls(10.6 ± 1.5 years old, Tanner stages I–III) participated in the study and were divided into 5 groups: 40 swimmers, 40 football players, 40 basketball players, 40 handball players, and 40 controls. Fat and lean masses at whole body, arms, trunk, and legs were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry(DXA). Pubertal status was determined using Tanner test. Effects of different sports on fat and lean masses were assessed through analysis of covariance with height as covariates. Analyses were performed separately in 2 groups depending on the Tanner stage(prepubertal and pubertal).Results: The girls of the control group had less lean mass and more fat mass compared to the girls who play sports(p < 0.05). There were differences in body fat between sports. The swimmers and football players had less body fat(p < 0.05). On the other hand, handball players showed the highest values in lean mass(p < 0.05).Conclusion: Impact sports(football, basketball, and handball) and low-impact sports(swimming) provide an appropriate development of lean mass in growing girls. We can conclude that people practicing sports at early ages ensure a lower fat mass and higher lean mass compared to those who do not practice. These results may be useful as a preventive method of adult obesity.

The genus Dallasiellus Berg (Hemiptera: Cydnidae) is revised with the description of a new species from Caribbean, Dallasiellus varaderensis nov. sp. A diagnosis of species is based on external morphology of males and genitalia examination. Dorsal view of adults and parameres are illustrated. Notes about their biology and host plants are briefly discussed.

Alcoholic liver disease(ALD) is a major cause of acute and chronic liver injury. Extensive evidence has been accumulated on the pathological process of ALD during the past decades. However, effective treatment options for ALD are very limited due to the lack of suitable in vivo models that recapitulate the full spectrum of ALD. Experimental animal models of ALD, particularly rodents, have been used extensively to mimic human ALD. An ideal animal model should recapitulate all aspects of the ALD process, including significant steatosis, hepatic neutrophil infiltration, and liver injury. A better strategy against ALD depends on clear diagnostic biomarkers, accurate predictor(s) of its progression and new therapeutic approaches to modulate stop or even reverse the disease. Numerous models employing rodent animals have been established in the last decades to investigate the effects of acute and chronic alcohol exposure on the initiation and progression of ALD. Although significant progress has been made in gaining better knowledge on the mechanisms and pathology of ALD, many features of ALD are unknown, and require further investigation, ideally with improved animal models that more effectively mimic human ALD. Although differences in the degree and stages of alcoholic liver injury inevitably exist between animal models and human ALD, the acquisition and translational relevance will be greatly enhanced with the development of new and improved animal models of ALD.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with a strong genetic background and is triggered by environmental *** evidence supports CD6,a lymphocyte surface receptor mostly expressed by T cells,as a putative target in ***,a humanized anti-CD6 antibody has been assayed for the treatment of certain autoimmune disorders,including ***,we present novel evidence in mice and humans for a direct involvement of CD6 in psoriasis ***,an attenuated form of imiquimod-induced psoriasis-like skin inflammation was demonstrated in CD6-deficient mice,as deduced from lower epidermal thickness and local reduced production of pro-inflammatory cytokines,namely,***,isolated CD4+CD62L+T cells from CD6-deficient mice displayed decreased in vitro T-helper type 17 ***,a statistically significant association between CD6 single-nucleotide polymorphisms(rs17824933,rs11230563 and rs12360861)and more severe forms of psoriasis was demonstrated in a cohort of 304 patients at three public hospitals from the metropolitan area of *** together,these results provide new supportive evidence of the contribution of the CD6 lymphocyte receptor in psoriasis at both experimental and clinical levels.

AIM:To ascertain the role of cardiovascular risk factors,cardiovascular diseases,standard treatments and other diseases in the development of ischemic colitis(IC).METHODS:A retrospective,case-control study was designed,using matched data and covering 161 incident cases of IC who required admission to our hospital from 1998 through *** was diagnosed on the basis of endoscopic findings and diagnostic or compatible *** were randomly chosen from a cohort of patients who were admitted in the same period and required a colonoscopy,excluding those with diagnosis of *** were matched with controls(ratio 1:2),by age and sex.A conditional logistic regression was ***:A total of 483 patients(161 cases,322 con-trols)were included;mean age 75.67±10.03 years,55.9%*** principal indications for colonos-copy in the control group were lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage(35.4%),anemia(33.9%),abdominal pain(19.9%)and diarrhea(9.6%).The endoscopic findings in this group were hemorrhoids(25.5%),diverticular disease(30.4%),polyps(19.9%)and colorectal cancer(10.2%).The following variables were associated with IC in the univariate analysis:arterial hypertension(P= 0.033);dyslipidemia(P<0.001);diabetes mellitus(P =0.025);peripheral arterial disease(P=0.004);heart failure(P=0.026);treatment with hypotensive drugs(P=0.023);angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors;(P=0.018);calcium channel antagonists(P=0.028);and acetylsalicylic acid(ASA)(P<0.001).Finally,the following variables were independently associated with the development of IC:diabetes mellitus[odds ratio(OR)1.76,95%confidence interval(CI):1.001-3.077,P=0.046];dyslipidemia(OR 2.12,95%CI:1.26-3.57,P=0.004);heart failure(OR 3.17,95%CI:1.31-7.68,P=0.01);peripheral arterial disease(OR 4.1,95%CI:1.32-12.72,P=0.015);treatment with digoxin(digitalis)(OR 0.27,95%CI:0.084-0.857,P=0.026);and ASA(OR 1.97,95%CI:1.16-3.36,P=0.012).CONCLUSION:The development of an episode of IC was independently associat

Long-term open circuit microbial electrosynthesis system promotes methanogenesis

Microbial electrosynthesis(MES) can potentially provide a mean for storing renewable energy surpluses as chemical energy. However, the fluctuating nature of these energy sources may represent a threat to MES, as the microbial communities that develop on the biocathode rely on the continuous existence of a polarized electrode. This work assesses how MES performance, product generation and microbial community evolution are affected by a long-period(6 weeks) power off(open circuit). Acetogenic and H2-producing bacteria activity recovered after reconnection. However, few days later syntrophic acetate oxidation bacteria and H2-consuming methanogens became dominant, producing CH4 as the main product, via electromethanogenesis and the syntrophic interaction between eubacterial and archaeal communities which consume both the acetic acid and the hydrogen present in the cathode environment. Thus,the system proved to be resilient to a long-term power interruption in terms of electroactivity. At the same time, these results demonstrated that the system could be extensively affected in both end product generation and microbial communities.

Green reagents reduce or eliminate the use and generation of hazardous substances in the synthesis of chemical compounds[1].The development of new green reagents is important for the development of a more sustainable chemical industry,based on processes that follow the principles dictated by green chemistry[2].In this context,the use of green reagents,such as hydrogen peroxide and dimethyl carbonate,in reactions that can be driven by sunlight,have been widely developed over the past twenty *** methodologieshave been implemented in chemical synthesis to catalyze reactions under safe and mild reaction conditions with the use of less harmful solvents and with reduced toxic waste *** supported reagents[3]have enabled many elegant and efficient strategies for performing a range of different transformations.

Abnormal Linguistic Lateralization and Sensory Processing in High Functioning Children with Autism Spectrum Conditions

Brain lateralization for language in high-functioning children with autism spectrum conditions (ASC) and sensory processing were explored as a part of a neuropsychological profile. A dichotic listening test and the Luria laterality subtest were administered to all participants (including controls) and the sensory profile test only to the ASC group. The usual right ear advantage was not exhibited by children with ASC and anomalies in auditory filtering were found. The sensory profile of 60% of the sample was characterized by hypersensitivity to auditory stimuli, hyposensitivity to vestibular information, high emotional reactions to sensory experiences, poor psychosocial coping strategies, high distractibility and inability to interpret body and facial language. Hyper-responsiveness to environmental auditory stimuli was significantly associated with impaired attention. Similarly, non-adaptive responses to sensory quotidian experiences were strongly connected to poor coping strategies. Our results, although preliminary, contribute to emphasizing the importance of including additional assessment methods such as the dichotic listening and the sensory profile questionnaire in the evaluation of cognitive profile in high-functioning children with ASC to plan an individualized psycho-educative intervention.
