First genome-wide association study of 99 body measures derived from 3-dimensional body scans

Body height,body mass index,hip and waist circumference are important risk factors or outcome variables in clinical and epidemiological research with complex underlying ***,these classical anthropometric traits represent only a very limited view on the human body and other traits with potentially higher functional specificity are not yet studied to a larger *** of LIFE-Adult were assessed by three-dimensional body scanner VITUS XXL determining 99 high-quality anthropometric traits in *** was performed by Axiom Genome-Wide CEU 1 Array Plate microarray technology and imputation was done using 1000 Genomes phase 3 reference *** phenotype and genetic information are available for a total of 7,562 *** heritabilities were estimated for height traits(maximum heritability with h2=44%for neck height)and 61 traits achieved values larger than 20%.By genome-wide analyses,we identified 16 loci associated with at least one of the 99 *** of these loci were not described for association with classical anthropometric traits so *** strongest novel association was observed for 7p14.3(rs11979006,P=2.12×10^(-9))for the trait Back Width with ZNRF2 as the most plausible candidate *** established for association with classical anthropometric traits were subjected to anthropometric phenome-wide association *** the reported 709 loci,211 *** with body scanner traits(enrichment:OR=1.96,P=1.08×10^(-61)).We conclude that genetics of 3D laser-based anthropometry is promising to identify novel loci and to improve the functional understanding of established ones.

New particle formation(NPF) in the tropical free troposphere(FT) is a globally important source of cloud condensation nuclei, affecting cloud properties and climate. Oxidized organic molecules(OOMs)produced from biogenic volatile organic compounds are believed to contribute to aerosol formation in the tropical FT, but without direct chemical observations. We performed in situ molecular-level OOMs measurements at the Bolivian station Chacaltaya at 5240 m above sea level, on the western edge of Amazonia. For the first time, we demonstrate the presence of OOMs, mainly with 4–5 carbon atoms, in both gas-phase and particle-phase(in terms of mass contribution) measurements in tropical FT air from Amazonia. These observations, combined with air mass history analyses, indicate that the observed OOMs are linked to isoprene emitted from the rainforests hundreds of kilometers away. Based on particle-phase measurements, we find that these compounds can contribute to NPF, at least the growth of newly formed nanoparticles, in the tropical FT on a continental scale. Thus, our study is a fundamental and significant step in understanding the aerosol formation process in the tropical FT.

A Reinforcement Learning approach for the continuous electricity market ofGermany: Trading from the perspective of a wind park operator

With the rising extension of renewable energies, the intraday electricity markets have recorded a growingpopularity amongst traders as well as electric utilities to cope with the induced volatility of the energysupply. Through their short trading horizon and continuous nature, the intraday markets offer the abilityto adjust trading decisions from the day-ahead market or reduce trading risk in a short-term notice. Producersof renewable energies utilize the intraday market to lower their forecast risk, by modifying their providedcapacities based on current forecasts. However, the market dynamics are complex due to the fact that thepower grids have to remain stable and electricity is only partly storable. Consequently, robust and intelligenttrading strategies are required that are capable to operate in the intraday market. In this work, we proposea novel autonomous trading approach based on Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) algorithms as a possiblesolution. For this purpose, we model the intraday trade as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) and employ theProximal Policy Optimization (PPO) algorithm as our DRL approach. A simulation framework is introducedthat enables the trading of the continuous intraday price in a resolution of one minute steps. We test ourframework in a case study from the perspective of a wind park operator. We include next to general tradeinformation both price and wind forecasts. On a test scenario of German intraday trading results from 2018,we are able to outperform multiple baselines with at least 45.24% improvement, showing the advantage of theDRL algorithm. However, we also discuss limitations and enhancements of the DRL agent, in order to increasethe performance in future works.

Vertical power flow forecast with LSTMs using regular training updatestrategies

The strong growth of renewable energy sources as well as the increasing amount of volatile energy consumptionis leading to major challenges in the electrical grid. In order to ensure safety and reliability in the electricitygrid, a high quality of power flow forecasts for the next few hours are needed. In this paper we investigateforecasts of the vertical power flow at transformer between the medium and high voltage grid. Forecastingthe vertical power flow is challenging due to constantly changing characteristics of the power flow at thetransformer. We present a novel approach to deal with these challenges. For the multi step time series forecastsa Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) is used. In our presented approach an update process where the model isretrained regularly is investigated and compared to baseline models. The model is retrained as soon as asufficient amount of new measurements are available. We show that this retraining mostly captures changesin the characteristic of the transformer that the model has not yet seen in the past and therefore cannot bepredicted by the model without an update process. To give more weight to recent data, we examined differentstrategies in terms of the number of epochs and the learning rate. We show that our new approach significantlyoutperforms the investigated baseline models. On average, we achieved an improvement of about 8% with theregular update process compared to the approach without update process.

The operation of electricity grids has become increasingly complex due to the current upheaval and the increase in renewable energy *** a consequence,active grid management is reaching its limits with conventional *** the context of the Learning to Run a Power Network(L2RPN)challenge,it has been shown that Reinforcement Learning(RL)is an efficient and reliable approach with considerable potential for automatic grid *** this article,we analyse the submitted agent from Binbinchen and provide novel strategies to improve the agent,both for the RL and the rule-based *** main improvement is a N-1 strategy,where we consider topology actions that keep the grid stable,even if one line is ***,we also propose a topology reversion to the original grid,which proved to be *** improvements are tested against reference approaches on the challenge test sets and are able to increase the performance of the rule-based agent by 27%.In direct comparison between rule-based and RL agent we find similar ***,the RL agent has a clear computational *** also analyse the behaviour in an exemplary case in more detail to provide additional ***,we observe that through the N-1 strategy,the actions of both the rule-based and the RL agent become more diversified.

Measurement of surface shear stress vector distribution using shear-sensitive liquid crystal coatings

The global wall shear stress measurement tech- nique using shear-sensitive liquid crystal （SSLC） is extended to wind tunnel measurements. Simple and common every- day equipment is used in the measurement; in particular a tungsten-halogen light bulb provides illumination and a saturation of SSLC coating color change with time is found. Spatial wall shear stress distributions of several typical flows are obtained using this technique, including wall-jet flow, vortex flow generated by a delta wing and junction flow behind a thin cylinder, although the magnitudes are not fully calibrated. The results demonstrate that SSLC technique can be extended to wind tunnel measurements with no complicated facilities used.

Classification of different sustainable flood retention basin types

Using a revised version of a previously published expert classification system, a database of potential Sustainable Flood Retention Basins has been developed for Scotland. The research shows that the majority of small and former （often old） drinking water reservoirs are kept full and their spillways are continuously in operation. Utilising some of the available capacity to contribute to flood control could significantly reduce the costs of complying with the European Union Flood Directive. Furthermore, the application of a previously developed classification model for Baden in Germany for the Scottish data set showed a lower diversity for basins in Scotland due to less developed infrastructure. The classification system appears to be robust and has the potential, with minor modifications, to be applied across Europe. The principle value of this approach is a clear and unambiguous categorisation, based on standard variables, which can help to promote communication and understanding between stakeholders.

Windtunnel studies of surface shear stress vector distribution measurement using shear sensitive liquid crystal coatings

Shear sensitive liquid crystal coating (SSLCC) can measure surface shear stress vector distribution efficiently with a high spa-tial resolution. The purpose of the present paper is to modify and extend the surface shear stress measurement technique de-termined by Reda et al. to wind tunnel studies. All the facilities employed in the technique are very common and simple. The measurement technique is applied to surface flow beneath a tangential jet and surface flow in a turbulence wedge generated by a small cylinder in windtunnel flow. Spatially resolved shear stresses over planar surface are obtained, although the magnitude is not fully calibrated.

Getting to the bottom of Taxol biosynthesis by fungi

t Taxol(paclitaxel)is a highly-oxygenated diterpenoid natural product first isolated from the pacific yew tree(Taxus brevifolia).It is one of the most widely used anticancer *** after the discovery of its unique mode of action and the resulting high demand,an extensive search was initiated for alternative sources to replace the slow-growing and scarce pacific *** far,however,Taxol and related compounds have only been found in the genus Taxus,which comprises a small number of slow-growing plants with a broad but generally isolated geographical *** 1993,Stierle and colleagues reported the independent biosynthesis of Taxol in an endophytic fungus isolated from Taxus brevifolia,which resulted in more than 160 subsequent publications and patents addressing the biosynthesis of Taxol and related taxanes by *** literature on fungal taxane synthesis contains numerous inconsistencies,prompting us to thoroughly re-examine Taxol biosynthesis in endophytic fungi associated with Taxus *** a combination of phytochemistry,molecular biology and genome sequencing,we were unable to find any evidence for independent taxane biosynthesis in any of the endophytes,including the isolate described in the original publication(Taxomyces andreanae)and several more recent isolates from Taxus *** findings therefore resolve a long-standing mystery concerning the evolution of a complex terpenoid biosynthetic pathway in two distantly-related organisms.
