Speed and surface steepness affect internal tibial loading during running

Dear Editor,Colorectal cancer(CRC)is the third most deadly can-cer worldwide[1].The mortality of CRC has remained high due to limited treatment options for metastatic CRC(mCRC)[2].Epithelial-mesenchymal transition(EmT)is an important contributor to mCRC[2].The c-mYC proto-oncogene(mYC)-induced transcription factor AP4(TFAP4/AP4)isadriverofEmT,therebypresumablyfacil-itates mCRC[3,4].The mitogen-activated protein kinase(mAPK)/c-JunN-terminalkinase(JNK)/activatorprotein-1(AP-1)pathway has been implicated in the regulation of EmT and mCRC[5].

mycorrhizal fungi mitigate nitrogen losses of an experimental grassland by facilitating plant uptake and soil microbial immobilization

Nitrogen(N)is one of the most limited nutrients of terrestrial ecosystems,whose losses are prevented in tightly coupled cycles in finely tuned *** change-induced N enrichment through atmospheric deposition and application of vast amounts of fertilizer are now challenging the terrestrial N *** mycorrhizal fungi(AmF)are known drivers of plant-soil nutrient fluxes,but a comprehensive assessment of AmF involvement in N cycling under global change is still ***,we simulated N enrichment by fertilization(low/high)in experimental grassland microcosms under greenhouse conditions in the presence or absence of AmF and continuously monitored different N pathways over nine *** found that high N enrichment by fertilization decreased the relative abundance of legumes and the plant species dominating the plant community changed from grasses to forbs in the presence of AmF,based on aboveground *** presence of AmF always maintained plant N:phosphorus(P)ratios between 14 and 16,no matter how the soil N availability *** in plant N:P ratios due to the increased plant N and P uptake might thus be a primary pathway of AmF altering plant community ***,we constructed a comprehensive picture of AmF’s role in N cycling,highlighting that AmF reduced N losses primarily by mitigating N leaching,while N_(2)O emissions played a marginal *** mycorrhizal fungi reduced N_(2)O emissions directly through the promotion of N_(2)O-consuming *** underlying mechanism for reducing N leaching is mainly the AmF-mediated improved nutrient uptake and AmF-associated microbial *** results indicate that synergies between AmF and other soil microorganisms cannot be ignored in N cycling and that the integral role of AmF in N cycling terrestrial ecosystems can buffer the upcoming global changes.

Smoking cessation prior to elective total joint arthroplasty results in sustained abstinence postoperatively

BACKGROUND Tobacco use is a well-documented modifiable risk factor for perioperative *** To determine the tobacco abstinence rates of patients who made cessation efforts prior to a total joint arthroplasty(TJA)*** A retrospective evaluation was performed on 88 self-reported tobacco users who underwent TJA between 2014-2022 and had tobacco cessation dates within 3 mo of *** patients were contacted via phone survey to understand their tobacco use pattern,and patient reported outcomes.A total of 37 TJA patients *** Our cohort was on average 61-years-old,60%(n=22)women,with an average body mass index of 30 kg/m^(2).The average follow-up time was 2.9±1.9 years.A total of 73.0%(n=27)of patients endorsed complete abstinence from tobacco use prior to *** cessation methods were used perioperatively including prescription therapy(13.5%),over the counter nicotine replacement(18.9%),cessation programs(5.4%).At final follow up,43.2%(n=16)of prior tobacco smokers reported complete *** who were able to maintain cessation postoperatively had improved Patient-Reported Outcomes measurement Information System(PROmIS)-10 mental health scores(49 vs 58;P=0.01),and hip dysfunction and osteoarthritis outcome score for joint replacement(***)scores(63 vs 82;P=0.02).No patients in this cohort had a prosthetic joint infection or required revision *** We report a tobacco cessation rate of 43.2%in patients undergoing elective TJA nearly 3 years *** undergoing TJA who were able to remain abstinent had improved PROmIS-10 mental health scores and *** *** perioperative period provides clinicians a unique opportunity to assist active tobacco smokers with cessation efforts and improve postoperative outcomes.

This paper presents a dynamic knowledge graph approach that offers a reusable,interoperable,and extensible framework for modelling power *** ontologies have been developed to support a linked data representation of infrastructure data,socio-demographic data,areal attributes like demand,and models describing power *** knowledge graph links the data with a hierarchical representation of administrative regions,supporting geospatial queries to retrieve information about the population within the vicinity of a power plant,the number of power plants,total generation capacity,and demand within specific *** agents were developed to operate on the knowledge *** agents performed tasks including data uploading,updating,retrieval,processing,model construction and scenario analysis.A derived information framework was used to track the provenance of information calculated by agents involved in each *** knowledge graph was populated with data describing the UK power *** alternative models of the transmission grid with different levels of structural resolution were instantiated,providing the foundation for the power system simulation and optimisation tasks performed by the *** application of the dynamic knowledge graph was demonstrated via a case study that investigates clean energy transition trajectories based on the deployment of Small modular Reactors in the UK.

Epidural pressure measurement using a fiber-optic sensor(proof-of-principle in vivo animal trial)

Background: An increase in epidural pressure around the stenosis has been observed in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis(LSS) with positive signs of sedimentation or redundant nerve roots. Further analysis of the pressure conditions in the stenotic area would be of great interest. We hypothesized that it would be possible to determine the physiological parameters of the epidural pulse wave and its course in pathological stenosis as a basis for objective identification of LSS based on pressure using a new measuring method with continuous spatial and temporal resolution. methods: We performed a single-case proof-of-principle in vivo animal trial and used a newly developed hybrid pressure-measurement probe with a fiber-tip Fabry–Pérot interferometer and several fiber Bragg gratings(FBG). Results: With reproducible precision, we determined the mean epidural pressure to be 7.5 mmHg and the peak-to-peak value to be 4–5 mmHg. When analyzing the pressure measured by an FBG array, both the heart and respiratory rates can be precisely determined. This study was the first to measure the pulse wave velocity of the cerebrospinal fluid pressure wave as 0.97 m/s using the newly developed pressure probe. A simulated LSS was detected in real time and located exactly. Conclusions: The developed fiber-optic pressure sensor probe enables a new objective measurement of epidural pressure. We confirmed our hypothesis that physiological parameters of the epidural pulse wave can be determined and that it is possible to identify an LSS.

The process-based water system models have been transitioning from single-functional to integrated multi-objective and multi-functional since the worldwide digital upgrade of urban water system *** proliferation of model complexity results in more significant uncertainty and computational ***,conventional model calibration methods are insufficient in dealing with extensive computational time and limited monitoring *** we introduce a novel machine learning system designed to expedite parameter optimization with limited data and boost efficiency in parameter ***,termed the machine learning parallel system for fast parameter search of integrated process-based models,aims to enhance both the performance and efficiency of the integrated model by ensuring its comprehensiveness,accuracy,and *** was constructed upon the concept of model surrogation t algorithm optimization using Ant Colony Optimization(ACO)coupled with Long Short-Term memory(LSTm).The optimization results of the Integrated sewer network and urban river model demonstrate that the average relative percentage difference of the predicted river pollutant concentrations increases from 1.1 to 6.0,and the average absolute percent bias decreases from 124.3%to 8.8%.The model outputs closely align with the monitoring data,and parameter calibration time is reduced by 89.94%.mLPS enables the efficient optimization of integrated process-based models,facilitating the application of highly precise complex models in environmental *** design of mLPS also presents valuable insights for optimizing complex models in other fields.

Subsequent total joint arthroplasty: Are we learning from the first stage?
