Association of 25-hydroxy-vitamin D levels with semen and hormonal parameters

Vitamin D levels have been linked to various health outcomes including reproductive disorders. The purpose of this study was to explore the association between serum vitamin D level （25-hydroxy-vitamin D, or 250HD） and semen and hormonal parameters. This is a cross-sectional study that included 170 healthy men recruited for the study of spermatogenesis from the general population. Men completed general and reproductive health questionnaires, and donated blood and semen samples. The main measures were hormonal （total and free testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin, estradiol, follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone） and semen parameters, adjusted （n= 147） for age, body mass index （BMI）, season, alcohol intake and smoking, in relation to categories of vitamin D levels, determined apriori. The mean age of the study population was 29.0±8.5 years and mean BMI was 24.3±3.2 kg m-2. The mean 250HD was 34.1± 15.06 ng m1-1. BMI showed a negative association with 250HD. Sperm concentration, sperm progressive motility, sperm morphology, and total progressively motile sperm count were lower in men with ‘250HD ≥ 50 ng ml-1＇ when compared to men with‘20 ng ml-1 ≤ 250H D〈 50 ng ml-1,. Total sperm count and total progressive motile sperm count were lower in men with ‘250HD〈20 ng ml-1＇ when compared to men with‘20 ng ml-1≤250HD〈50 ng ml-1＇. The adjusted means of various hormonal parameters did not show statistical difference in the different categories of 250HD. In conclusion, serum vitamin D levels at high and low levels can be negatively associated with semen parameters.

Background:Few studies have incorporated the evolutionary insights provided by analysis of phylogenetic structure along with community composition to assess the effects of exotic invasion on freshwater ***,we assess the taxonomic and phylogenetic relationships among acid seep springs to investigate the potential homogenization or resistance of communities due to invasion of an exotic ***:Multivariate community analyses indicated differences in community and phylogenetic composition and dispersion among acid seep springs,associated with gradients in soil moisture,canopy cover,and phylogenetic *** contrast,univariate analyses showed differences in taxonomic diversity but not phylogenetic diversity among acid seep ***:Despite exotic invasion,individual acid seep springs remained taxonomically and phylogenetically distinct from each *** and phylogenetic diversity metrics revealed different aspects of composition,reinforcing the importance of including both in analyses of plant communities for understanding community assembly following exotic invasion and for management *** acid seep springs,taxonomic and phylogenetic composition appear to be driven more through environmental filtering by light and moisture than by the competitive effects following invasion of an exotic grass in support of Elton’s biotic resistance hypothesis.

Measuring quality is a current need of medical services either to assess their cost-effectiveness or to identify discrepancies requiring refinement. With the advent of bowel cancer screening and increasing patient awareness of bowel symptoms, there has been an unprecedented increase in demand for ***, there is an expanding open-discussion on missed rates of cancer or precancerous polyps during diagnostic/screening colonoscopy and on the rate of adverse events related to therapeutic *** a quality colonoscopy service is therefore a healthcare priority. Colonoscopy is a multi-step process and therefore assessment of all aspects of the procedure must be addressed. Quality in colonoscopy refers to a combination of many patient-centered technical and non-technical skills and knowledge aiming to patient's safety and satisfaction through a continuous effort for improvement. The benefits of this endless process are hiding behind small details which can eventually make the difference in *** specific quality metrics help to define and shape an optimal service and forms a secure basis of improvement. Τhis paper does not aim to give technical details on how to perform colonoscopy but to summarize what to measure and when, in accordance with the current identified quality indicators and standards for colonoscopy.
