In order to reach a large,untapped reserve of high-quality coal,D8 Cloverlick m.ne proposed to m.ne a corridor nearly 600 m.deep beneath the Benham.Spur of Black m.untain,Kentucky’s highest peak.D8 Cloverlick m.ne was extracting the Owl seam.but the corridor’s route lay approxim.tely 20 m.above century-old m.ne workings in the C–(Darby)*** to the concern,three serious coal bursts had recently occurred in nearby Owl seam.*** of the old workings seem.d to indicate that the underlying C–seam.had been fully ***,two of the coal bursts had occurred above areas where the C–Seam.was also shown as m.ned *** Safety and Health Adm.nistration(m.HA)Technical Support therefore investigated the records of past m.ning to better understand the old m.ne *** conditions observed in current Owl seam.workings were also com.ared with the m.ps of the old C–seam.*** study concluded that the presence of hazardous underlying rem.ants could not be ruled *** m.tigate the burst risk,D8 Cloverlick m.ne adopted a strategy of stress probe drilling.A self-propelled coal drill was used to auger 11.5-m.long,sm.ll diam.ter holes in advance of *** each hole was drilled,the cuttings were m.asured to detect the presence of highly stressed *** the crossing was successfully com.leted without incident.

Calibration of a hysteretic m.del for glass fiber reinforced gypsum.wall panels

Glass fi ber reinforced gypsum.GFRG) wall panels are prefabricated panels with hollow cores, originally developed in Australia and subsequently adopted by India and China for use in buildings. This paper discusses identifi cation and calibration of a suitable hysteretic m.del for GFRG wall panels fi lled with reinforced concrete. As considerable pinching was observed in the experim.ntal results, a suitable hysteretic m.del with pinched hysteretic rule is used to conduct a series of quasi-static as inelastic hysteretic response analyses of GFRG panels with two different widths. The calibration of the pinching m.del param.ters was carried out to approxim.tely m.tch the sim.lated and experim.ntal responses up to 80% of the peak load in the post peak region. Interestingly, the sam. values of various param.ters(energy dissipation and pinching related param.ters) were obtained for all fi ve test specim.ns.

Global water security is a severe issue that threatens hum.n health and well-being. Finding sustainable alternative water resources has becom. a m.tter of great urgency. For coastal urban areas, desalinated seawater could serve as a freshwater supply. However, since 20%-30% of the water supply is used for flushing waste from.the city, seawater with sim.le treatm.nt could also partly replace the use of freshwater. In this work, the freshwater saving potential and environm.ntal im.acts of the urban water system.（water-wastewater closed loop） adopting seawater desalination, seawater for toilet flushing （SWTF）, or reclaim.d water for toilet flushing （RWTF） are com.ared with those of a conventional freshwater system. through a life-cycle assessm.nt and sensitivity analysis. The potential applications of these processes are also assessed. The results support the environm.ntal sustainability of the SWTF approach, but its potential application depends on the coastal distance and effective population density of a city. Developed coastal cities with an effective population density exceeding 3000 ***-2 and located less than 30 km.from.the seashore （for the m.in pipe supplying seawater to the city） would benefit from.applying SWTF, regardless of other im.act param.ters. By further applying the sulfate reduction, autotrophic denitrification, and nitrification integrated （SANI） process for wastewater treatm.nt, the m.xim.m.distance from.the seashore can be extended to 60 km. Considering that m.st m.dern urbanized cities fulfill these criteria, the next generation of water supply system. could consist of a freshwater supply coupled with a seawater supply for sustainable urban developm.nt.

The switch from.skotom.rphogenesis to photom.rphogenesis is a key developm.ntal transition in the life of seed plants. While m.ch of the underpinning proteom. rem.deling is driven by light-induced changes in gene expression, the proteolytic rem.val of specific proteins by the ubiquitin-26S proteasom. system.is also likely param.unt. Through m.ss spectrom.tric analysis of ubiquitylated proteins affinity-purified from.etiolated Arabidopsis seedlings before and after red-light irradiation, we identified a num.er of influential proteins whose ubiquitylation status is m.dified during this switch. We observed a substantial enrichm.nt for proteins involved in auxin, abscisic acid, ethylene, and brassinosteroid signaling, peroxisom. function, disease resistance, protein phosphorylation and light perception, including the phytochrom. （Phy） A and phototropin photoreceptors. Soon after red-light treatm.nt, PhyA becom.s the dom.nant ubiquitylated species, with ubiquitin attachm.nt sites m.pped to six lysines. A PhyA m.tant protected from.ubiquitin addition at these sites is substantially m.re stable in planta upon photoconversion to Pfr and is hyperactive in driving photom.rphogenesis. However, light still stim.lates ubiquitylation and degradation of this m.tant, im.lying that other attachm.nt sites and/or proteolytic pathways exist. Collectively, we expand the catalog of ubiquitylation targets in Arabidopsis and show that this post- translational m.dification is central to the rewiring of plants for photoautotrophic growth.

Characterization of Gibberellin Receptor m.tants of Barley （Hordeum.vulgare L.）

The sequence of Gidl （a gene for a gibberellin （GA） receptor from.rice） was used to identify a putative orthologue from.barley. This was expressed in E. coil, and produced a protein that was able to bind GA in vitro with both structural specificity and saturability. Its potential role in GA responses was investigated using barley m.tants with reduced GA sensitivity （gsel m.tants）. Sixteen different gsel m.tants each carried a unique nucleotide substitution in this sequence. In all but one case, these changes resulted in single am.no acid substitutions, and, for the rem.ining m.tant, a substitution in the 5＇ untranslated region of the m.NA is proposed to interfere with translation initiation. There was perfect linkage in segregating populations between new m.tant alleles and the gsel phenotype, leading to the conclusion that the putative GID1 GA receptor sequence in barley corresponds to the Gsel locus. Determ.nation of endogenous GA contents in one of the m.tants revealed enhanced accum.lation of bioactive GA1, and a deficit of C20 GA precursors. All of the gsel m.tants had reduced sensitivity to exogenous GA3, and to AC94377 （a GA analogue） at concentrations that are norm.lly ＇saturating＇, but, at m.ch higher concentrations, there was often a considerable response. The com.arison between barley and rice m.tants reveals interesting differences between these two cereal species in GA horm.nal physiology.

The worldwide rise in heatwave frequency poses a threat to plant survival and *** the new marker phenotypes that show reproducible response to heat stress and contribute to heat stress tolerance is becom.ng a *** this study,we describe a protocol focusing on the daily changes in plant m.rphology and photosynthetic perform.nce after exposure to heat stress using an autom.ted noninvasive phenotyping *** stress exposure resulted in an acute reduction of the quantum.yield of photosystem.II and increased leaf *** longer term.the exposure to heat also affected plant growth and *** tracking the recovery period of the WT and m.tants im.aired in therm.tolerance(hsp101),we observed that the difference in m.xim.m.quantum.yield,quenching,rosette size,and *** exam.ning the correlation across the traits throughout tim.,we observed that early changes in photochem.cal quenching corresponded with the rosette size at later stages,which suggests the contribution of quenching to overall heat *** also determ.ned that 6 h of heat stress provides the m.st inform.tive insight in plant’s responses to heat,as it shows a clear separation between treated and nontreated plants as well as the WT and *** work stream.ines future discoveries by providing an experim.ntal protocol,data analysis pipeline,and new phenotypes that could be used as targets in therm.tolerance screenings.

Deep cover bleeder entry perform.nce and support loading: A case study

Several questions have em.rged in relation to deep cover bleeder entry perform.nce and support loading:how well do current m.deling procedures calculate the rear abutm.nt extent and loading? Does an im.roved understanding of the rear abutm.nt extent warrant a change in standing support in bleeder entries? To help answer these questions and to determ.ne the current utilization of standing support in bleeder entries, four bleeder entries at varying distances from.the startup room.were instrum.nted,observed, and num.rically *** paper details observations m.de by NIOSH researchers in the bleeder entries of a deep cover longwall panel—specifically data collected from.instrum.nted pum.able cribs, observations of the conditions of the entries, and num.rical m.deling of the bleeder entries during longwall *** prim.ry focus was on the extent and m.gnitude of the abutm.nt loading experienced by the standing *** expected, the instrum.ntation of the standing supports showed very little loading relative to the capacity of the standing supports—less than 23 m. load and 2.54 cm.*** Flac3D program.was used to evaluate these four bleeder entries using previously defined m.deling and input param.ter estim.tion *** results indicated only a m.nor increase in load during the extraction of the longwall *** m.del showed a m.ch greater increase in stress due to the developm.nt of the gateroad and bleeder entries, with about 80% of the increase associated with developm.nt and 20% with longwall *** Flac3D m.del showed very good correlation between expected gateroad loading during panel extraction and that expected based on previous *** results of this study showed that the rear abutm.nt stress experienced by this bleeder entry design was *** farther away from.the startup room. the lower the applied load and sm.ller the convergence in the entry if all else is held ***, the num.rical m.deling m.thod
