The effects of increased water tem.erature on algal com.unity com.osition were investigated in Lake Sinclair, Baldwin County, Georgia, USA. The lake received waste cooling water from.a coal burning power plant. Discharges of recycled lake water were, on average, 15°C ± 1.5°C (and up to 23°C) warm.r than typical am.ient tem.eratures. Seasonal changes in algal com.osition were observed, and the warm.r sam.le site had a greater diversity of diatom.species year round independent of changes in tem.erature. Therm.l pollution created a high percent dissim.larity between diatom. at the warm.r site and the rem.inder of the lake. Species turnover observed in natural sam.les was not detected for the warm.r site. Anthropogenic therm.l pollution was im.licated as the factor inducing changes in the natural algal com.unity com.osition, which m.y im.act other trophic levels and ultim.tely the overall ecology of Lake Sinclair.

Over the past half century,wildlife research has relied on technological advances to gain additional insight into the secretive lives of *** revolution started in the 1960s with the developm.nt of radio telem.try and continues today with the use of Global Positioning System.GPS)-based research *** the present paper we review the history of radio telem.try from.its origins with grizzly bears in Yellowstone to its early applications in tiger research and conservation in *** address the different types of data that are available using radio telem.try as opposed to using other research techniques,such as behavioral observations,cam.ra trapping,DNA analysis and scat *** the late 1990s,the rapid developm.nt of GPS collar technology revolutionized wildlife *** new technology has enabled researchers to dram.tically im.rove their ability to gather data on anim.l m.vem.nts and *** the ecological and conservation benefits of radio telem.try,there have been few telem.try studies of tigers in the wild,and m.st have been on the Bengal or Am.r *** close with an assessm.nt of the current tiger conservation efforts using GPS technology and discuss how this new inform.tion can help to preserve tigers for future generations.

Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are inflam.atory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract with a substantial heritable com.onent. The IBD5 region on chrom.som. 5q31 is one of only two loci widely confirm.d to be associated with Crohn's disease in m.ltiple independent cohorts. Although m.ny populations have dem.nstrated association with IBD5, there rem.ins uncertainty as to the causal variant within the region. A recent report identified polym.rphism. in SLC22A4 (OCTN1) and SLC22A5 (OCTN2) as being responsible for the IBD5 association, however, these findings have not been replicated. This review discusses the data evaluating the IBD5 locus and the OCTN genes and their relationship to inflam.atory bowel disease. Several other genes, including IRF1 and P4HA2 m.y be equally as likely to contain the IBD5 causal variant as the OCTN genes.

Flexible electronics utilizing single crystalline sem.conductors typically require post-growth processes to assem.le and incorporate the crystalline m.terials onto flexible substrates. Here we present a high-precision transfer-printing m.thod for vertical arrays of single crystalline sem.conductor m.terials with widely varying aspect ratios and densities enabling the assem.ly of arrays on flexible substrates in a vertical fashion. Com.lem.ntary fabrication processes for integrating transferred arrays into flexible devices are also presented and characterized. Robust contacts to transferred silicon wire arrays are dem.nstrated and shown to be stable under flexing stress down to bending radii of 20 m.. The fabricated devices exhibit a reversible tactile response enabling silicon based, nonpiezoelectric, and flexible tactile sensors. The presented system.leads the way towards high-throughput, m.nufacturable, and scalable fabrication of flexible devices.

With the prevalent issue of drug abuse in society, research regarding the effects of ketam.ne, a drug frequently abused by youth in club settings, has increased. Despite its potential for m.suse, ketam.ne has dem.nstrated potential as a fast-acting antidepressant and seem. to work well for relieving treatm.nt-resistant depression. However, previous research has shown ketam.ne use m.y cause im.airm.nts in frontal and m.dial tem.oral lobe functioning, leading to problem. with m.m.ry. While under the influence of ketam.ne, individuals also display problem. with spatial working m.m.ry when com.ared to individuals not dosed with ketam.ne. The m.jority of previous research has exam.ned the short-term.im.act of ketam.ne use with studies on neurodevelopm.nt largely confined to postnatal exposure. In the present study, the long-term.effects on m.m.ry caused by repeated ketam.ne exposure during late adolescence were exam.ned. Rats were used as nonhum.n m.dels in order to investigate the cognitive risks resulting from.chronic use of ketam.ne. The results indicated that low-ketam.ne dosed rats dem.nstrated significantly better spatial m.m.ry recall com.ared to high-ketam.ne dosed rats. In addition, high-ketam.ne dosed rats appeared to struggle m.re with working m.m.ry than the rats in the low-ketam.ne and control groups. Sim.larly, both drug groups showed significantly m.re working m.m.ry and reference m.m.ry errors than the control group. This indicates that higher doses of ketam.ne during late adolescence m.y cause working and spatial m.m.ry im.airm.nts later in life.
