Objective:To evaluate the potential toxic effects of mine tailings exposure among the fisher folks residing near and far from the calancan Bay,Marinduque,using the micronucleus assay as an ***:The fisher folks residing near and far from the calancan Bay were interviewed and the presence and frequency of cells with micronucleus in exfoliated buccal epithelial cells were ***:Results showed that the prevalence of cells with micronucleus was higher among the fisher folks who were directly exposed to the mine tailings as compared with those fisher folks who reside in a community without exposure of mine tailings and history of mining(Pconclusions:The presence and the significant difference in the cells with micronuclei observed near the calancan Bay could possibly indicate a prolonged chemical stress caused by the toxic heavy metals in the mine tailings and the environment.

The genus Sitophilus （coleoptera： curculionidae） encompasses species of great economic importance as stored grain pests worldwide. Among these species, the maize and the rice weevils （Sitophilus zeamais and Sitophilus oryzae, respectively） are partic- ularly important in warmer climates. These two weevils exhibit closely morphological and ecological resemblance making difficult their proper identification and recognition of their distribution in grain-producing regions. Both species are recorded in South America and particularly in Brazil, but their respective distribution and prevalence were not yet assessed in the region. Therefore, several insect samples throughout Brazil were collected and subjected to morphological identification using male genitalia and also using molec- ular identification with species-specific primers designed for clear recognition of both the species. The primers were designed for the specific amplification of a gene fragment of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I, which exhibited high specificity during our prelimi- nary experiments with insects from six populations of known species （either S. zeamais or S. oryzae）. Both identification strategies provided the same results indicating preva- lence of the maize weevil S. zeamais throughout the country. Two hypotheses may explain such prevalence：（i） the likely host preference ofS. zeamais for maize because this is the most cultivated cereal in Brazil, and （ii） the prevalence ofS. zeamais in tropical regions as compared with S. oryzae, which is more disseminated in subtropical and temperate regions.

Insecticides cause a range of sub-lethal effects on targeted insects, which are frequently detrimental to them. However, targeted insects are able to cope with insecti- cides within sub-lethal ranges, which vary with their susceptibility. Here we assessed the response of three strains of the maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky （coleoptera.＂ curculionidae） to sub-lethal exposure to the pyrethoid insecticide cypermethrin. We ex- pected enzyme induction associated with cypermethrin resistance since it would aid the resistant insects in surviving such exposure. Lower respiration rate and lower activity were also expected in insecticide-resistant insects since these traits are also likely to favor survivorship under insecticide exposure. curiously though, cypermethrin did not affect ac- tivity of digestive and energy metabolism enzymes, and even reduced the activity of some enzymes （particularly for cellulase and cysteine-proteinase activity in this case）. There was strain variation in response, which may be （partially） related to insecticide resistance in some strains. Sub-lethal exposure to cypermethrin depressed proteolytic and mainly cellulolytic activity in the exposed insects, which is likely to impair their fitness. However, such exposure did not affect respiration rate and walking behavior of the insects （except for the susceptible strain where walking activity was reduced）. Walking activity varies with strain and may minimize insecticide exposure, which should be a concern, particularly if associated with （physiological） insecticide resistance.

celiac disease(cD) is a systemic immune-mediated disorder triggered by dietary gluten in genetically predisposed individuals. The typical symptoms are anemia, diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, and abdominal pain. cD has been reported in patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis, primary biliary cholangitis, autoimmune hepatitis, aminotransferase elevations, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, hepatitis B, hepatitis c, portal hypertension and liver cirrhosis. We evaluate recommendations for active screening for cD in patients with liver diseases, and the effect of a gluten-free diet in these different settings. Active screening for cD is recommended in patients with liver diseases, particularly in those with autoimmune disorders, steatosis in the absence of metabolic syndrome, noncirrhotic intrahepatic portal hypertension, cryptogenic cirrhosis, and in the context of liver transplantation. In hepatitis c, diagnosis of cD can be important as a relative contraindication to interferon use. Gluten-free diet ameliorates the symptoms associated with cD; however, the associated liver disease may improve, remain the same, or progress.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the catalytic properties of a Ru promoted co/SBA-15 catalyst for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis （FTS）. The Ru promoted co/SBA-15 catalyst was prepared by wet impregnation method and was characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray energy dispersion spectrophotometer, N2 adsorption-desorption, temperature-programmed reduction and transmission electron microscopy. The Fischer-Tropsch synthesis using the catalyst was carried out to evaluate the catalyst activity and its effect on FTS product distribution. The synthesis was carried out in a slurry reactor operating at 513 K, 20 atm, cO ： H2 molar ratio of 1 ： 1. X-ray diffraction showed that the calcined cobalt catalyst did not modify the structure of SBA-15, proving that co was present in the form of co3O4 in the catalyst. The addition of cobalt in SBA-15 decreased the specific superficial area of the molecular sieve. Fischer-Tropsch synthesis activity and c5＋ hydrocarbon selectivity increased with the addition of Ru. The increases in activity and selectivity were attributed to the increased number of active sites resulting from higher reducibility and the synergetic effect of Ru and co. Ru/co/SBA-15 catalysts showed moderate conversion （40%） and high selectivity towards the production of c5＋（80 wt%）.

Non-organ-specific autoantibodies and thyroid autoantibodies have been frequently found in chronic carriers of hepatitis c virus(HcV). With respect to endomysial antibodies and tissue transglutaminase, it is controversial whether the prevalence of glutenrelated seromarkers is higher in patients with HcV. In such cases, in addition to acknowledging any currently existing autoimmune disease, recognizing the risk of the patient developing an autoimmune disease during interferon(IFN)-based treatment must be a principle concern. From a clinical point-of-view, the presence of autoantibodies arouses suspicion that an autoimmunedisease may be present or may be precipitated by IFNbased HcV treatment. In this paper, we review the prevalence of autoantibodies in individuals with hepatitis c, the clinical significance of these autoantibodies, and the approach recommended for such situations.

Over 50 genera of bees release pollen from flower anthers using thoracic vibrations,a phenomenon known as *** efficiency of this process is directly affected by the mechanical properties of the buzzes,namely the duration,amplitude,and ***,although the effects of the former two properties are well described,the role of buzz frequency on pollen release remains ***,nearly all of the existing studies describing vibrational properties of natural buzz-pollination are limited to bumblebees(Bombus)and carpenter bees(Xvlocopa)constraining our current understanding of this behavior and its ***,we attempted to minimize this shortcoming by testing whether flower anthers exhibit optimal frequency for pollen release and whether bees tune their buzzes to match these(optimal)*** true,certain frequencies will trigger more pollen release and lighter bees will reach buzz frequencies closer to this optimum to compensate their smaller buzz *** strategies were used to test these hypotheses:(i)the use of(artificial)vibrational playbacks in a broad range of buzz frequencies and amplitudes to assess pollen release by tomato plants(Solarium Ivcopersicum L.)and(ii)the recording of natural buzzes of Neotropical bees visiting tomato plants during *** playback experiment indicates that although buzz frequency does affect pollen release,no optimal frequency exists for *** addition,the recorded results of natural buzz-pollination reveal that buzz frequencies vary with bee genera and are not correlated with body ***,neither bees nor plants are tuned to optimal pollen release *** frequency of buzz-pollination is a likely consequence of the insect flight machinery adapted to reach higher accelerations,while flower plant response to buzz-pollination is the likely result of its pollen granular properties.

Assessment of liver fibrosis in chronic hepatitis c virus(HcV)infection is considered a relevant part of patient care and key for decision *** liver biopsy has been considered the gold standard for staging liver fibrosis,it is an invasive technique and subject to sampling errors and significant intra-and inter-observer *** the last decade,several noninvasive markers were proposed for liver fibrosis diagnosis in chronic HcV infection,with variable *** the clear advantage of being noninvasive,a more objective interpretation of test results may overcome the mentioned intra-and inter-observer variability of liver *** addition,these tests can theoretically offer a more accurate view of fibrogenic events occurring in the entire liver with the advantage of providing frequent fibrosis evaluation without additional ***,in general,these tests show low accuracy in discriminating between intermediate stages of fibrosis and may be influenced by several hepatic and extrahepatic *** methods are either serum markers(usually combined in a mathematical model)or imaging modalities that can be used separately or combined in algorithms to improve *** this review we will discuss the different noninvasive methods that are currently available for the evaluation of liver fibrosis in chronic hepatitis c,their advantages,limitations and application in clinical practice.

BAcKGROUND Acute decompensation(AD)of cirrhosis is related to systemic inflammation and elevated circulating *** this context,biomarkers of inflammation,such as calprotectin,may be of prognostic *** To evaluate serum calprotectin levels in patients hospitalized for complications of *** This is a prospective cohort study that included 200 subjects hospitalized for complications of cirrhosis,20 outpatients with stable cirrhosis,and 20 healthy *** calprotectin was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbant *** calprotectin levels were higher among groups with cirrhosis when compared to healthy *** median calprotectin was related to child-Pugh c,ascites,and hepatic *** calprotectin was related to acute-on-chronic liver failure(AcLF)and infection in the bivariate,but not in multivariate *** was not associated with survival among patients with AcLF;however,in patients with AD without AcLF,higher calprotectin was associated with a lower 30-d survival,even after adjustment for chronic liver failure-consortium(cLIF-c)AD score.A high-risk group(cLIF-c AD score≥60 and calprotectin≥580 ng/mL)was identified,which had a 30-d survival(27.3%)similar to that of patients with grade 3 AcLF(23.3%).cONcLUSION Serum calprotectin is associated with prognosis in patients with AD without AcLF and may be useful in clinical practice to early identify patients with a very low short-term survival.
