While brain computer interfaces(BCIs)ofer the potential of allowing those sufering from loss of muscle control to once again fully engage with their environment by bypassing the afected motor system and decoding user intentions directly from brain activity,they are prone to *** possible avenue for BCI performance improvement is to detect when the BCI user perceives the BCI to have made an unintended action and thus take corrective ***-related potentials(ErrPs)are neural correlates of error awareness and as such can provide an indication of when a BCI system is not performing according to the user’s ***,we investigate the brain signals of an implanted BCI user sufering from locked-in syndrome(LIS)due to late-stage ALS that prevents her from being able to speak or move but not from using her BCI at home on a daily basis to communicate,for the presence of error-related *** frst establish the presence of an ErrP originating from the dorsolateral pre-frontal cortex(dLPFC)in response to errors made during a discrete feedback task that mimics the click-based spelling software she uses to ***,we show that this ErrP can also be elicited by cursor movement errors in a continuous BCI cursor control *** work represents a frst step toward detecting ErrPs during the daily home use of a communications BCI.

Drifting can be an effective way for aquatic organisms to disperse and colonise new areas. Increasing connectivity between European large rivers facilitates invasion by drifting aquatic macroinvertebrates. The present study shows that high abundances of invasive species drift in the headstream of the river Rhine. Dikerogammarus villosus and Chelicorophium cur- vispinum represented up to 90% of the total of drifting macroinvertebrates. Drift activity shows seasonal and diel patterns. most species started drifting in spring and were most abundant in the water column during the summer period. Drift activity was very low during the winter period. Diel patterns were apparent; most species, including D. villosus, drifted during the night. Drifting macroinvertebrates colonised stony substrate directly from the water column. D. villosus generally colonised the substrate at night, while higher numbers of C. curvispinum colonised the substrate during the day. It is very likely that drifting functions as a disper- sal mechanism for crustacean invaders. Once waterways are connected, these species are no longer necessarily dependent on dispersal vectors other than drift for extending their distribution range

In this work, a new methodology is introduced to calculate the solids mixing rate in dense gas-fluidized beds using the two-fluid model. The implementation of this methodology into an existing two-fluid model code was carefully verified. The solids phase continuity equation was satisfied using our method, and the sensitivity of the computational results to the time step, computational cell size, and discretization scheme was investigated to determine the optimal simulation settings. Using these simulation settings, the degree of solids mixing was observed to rapidly （exponentially） increase with increasing operating pressure and linearly decrease with increasing bed diameter. Our novel methodology can be applied to analyze mixing processes in large lab-scale beds as an alternative to existing time-consuming simulation techniques such as computational fluid dynamics combined with the discrete element model.

Recent invasions by non-native gobiid fish species that are ongoing in the Western European rivers Rhine and meuse, will lead to interactions with native benthic fish species. Since both non-native gobiids and native benthic species are bottom dwelling species with a preference for shelter during at least part of their life cycle, it is likely that competition for shelter will occur between these non-native and native species when shelter is a limiting factor. To investigate the importance of this mecha- nism for species replacements, various habitat choice experiments were conducted between two common native benthic fish spe- cies （Cottus perifretum and Barbatula barbatula） and four invasive non-native gobiid species （Proterorhinus semilunaris, Neogo- bius melanostomus, N. kessleri and N. fluviatilis）. The first series of single specimen experiments determined the habitat choice of each individual fish species. In a second series of competition experiments, shifts in habitat choice in comparison with the previ- ously observed habitat choice, were determined when a native benthic fish species co-occurred with non-native gobiid species. Native C. perifretum displayed a significant shift in habitat choice in co-occurrence with the gobiids N. kessleri or P. semilunaris. C. perifretum was outcompeted and moved from the available shelter place to less preferred habitat types. During the competition experiments no change in habitat choice of B. barbatula was shown. Our study therefore suggests that competition for shelter is likely to occur in rivers invaded by N. kessleri and P. semilunaris at sites where shelter is limiting

In this work, the borescopic particle image velocimetry (BPIV) technique was applied to a bubbling gas-solid fluidized bed, and the results were compared with published positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) measurement data. Before performing the experiments, the sensitivity of the BPIV results to the illumination power, light reflectivity of the particles, and location of the borescope was also investigated. The BPIV and PEPT results were in fair agreement;however, some discrepancies were *** difference between the two sets of results were mainly caused by the intrusiveness of BPIV, the fact that the local solids volume fraction was not accounted for in the BPIV analysis, and the intrinsic differences of these two methods. Therefore, measurement of the local solids volume fraction with the borescope is highly recommended for further development of the BPIV method, which will also enable measureme nt of the local solids mass fluxes in side dense gas-solid fluidized beds.
